Ray did not exhibit the level of professionalism or knowledge that was required for the job he was…read morehired to perform. The sparse lighting he showed up with (battery powered 4" x 10" LEDs ) was entirely inappropriate for the situation. His key light was underpowered and undersized which created an underexposed and harsh lighting condition. After his rough lighting setup I told him the lighting was too "flat." He did not appear to understand what that meant and made no attempt to correct the situation. Ray attempted to compensated for the underlit situation by increasing the iso setting on his camera. The mid tones were only exposed at 50 percent, therefore additional noise was introduced when I was forced to raise the brightness in post to 65 percent. Compensating for insufficient lighting during post, or using higher iso settings while shooting is only necessary when the lighting source is less than optimal. Ray only brought one lens for his camera that with a max aperture of f4 which contributed to the underexposure problem. The combination of his unprofessional lighting setup and his limitations of his lens made acquiring quality footage impossible. The rim light he provided malfunctioned about halfway through the interview. Ray did not have a spare light, spare battery or even an a/c adapter. The sound cut out toward the end of the interview, and even the level of what he did capture was unacceptably low ( -32 db). Fortunately I was recording a backup track to another device making the need for his audio unnecessary. My ad on Productionhub specified that I required a DP for 3 to 4 hours. At 3 1/2 hours Ray insisted that he needed to leave. I should have withheld partial payment which was my mistake. I have hired 5 other DPs for the documentary project I am working on. Each has possessed thorough knowledge of their craft and has taken pride in their work. Ray did not even come close to meeting the minimum level of knowledge necessary for the job he was paid for.
