Angelo is the BEST!! All the employees are ALWAYS so friendly! Ang always makes me feel welcomed. My boyfriend is a regular here and we usually sit inside, have a few drinks and watch tv almost every time. This place compared to a few other places I've been to are always welcoming and have reasonable prices not over priced. I am not a cigar smoking lady, but my man often enjoys a fine cigar during the warmer months. Because I love him so, we often pop in here together to purchase some cigars. It's close to my house and they have a really large selection (in the humidor they have cigars on the floor because they have so many!) The staff is moderately friendly. Once my fiance was purchasing something and a guy recommended getting another cigar because they were very similar. My fiance enjoyed both! The only off putting thing about this place is the Rocky Patel Lounge where numerous 40-something dudes smoke cigars and stare at you when you walk in. If you enjoy a cigar that doesn't have "Swisher" or "Sweet" in its name, this is definitely the place for you in the city proper. Virgil Avenue Tobacconist is located on Hertel and Virgil in North Buffalo, adjacent to Terrapin Station. If I'm in the mood for a fine cigar it's either this place or the Tinder Box (on the very rare occasion I find myself on freaking Transit Road). Let's say you looked at the "Best Of" lists on the Cigar Aficionado web site, printed it out and brought it to the shop. No, you won't find every non-Cuban on the lists, but you will find a very nice selection of premium cigars to choose from. I have seen the C.A.O. La Traviata here, as well as the My Father No. 1, among others, as well as many of my favorites from Rocky Patel, Kristoff, Ashton, Arturo Fuente, Padron and the like. I really like the Romeo y Julieta Habana Reserve, which they seem to always have in stock, but PLEASE PLEASE get some of the Rocky Patel 1961s in again. Virgil Ave also sells humidors, ash trays, various candles and sprays to mitigate the smell of cigar smoke, cigar cutters and other smoking accessories. They may also sell some pipe tobacco and non-premium cigars like said Swishers (I hope not) but I don't go to Virgil Ave seeking out those things. They also have the Rocky Patel lounge - an area to get away from your family and relax when everything at home is going sideways. You can smoke your cigars there, watch some TV as well as drink what you like as long as you bring your own. They don't sell booze, but they do have various glassware to accommodate you if you decide to stop by to chillax. To say I enjoy my cigars is understatement. I grew up in Williamsville and got my start smoking cigars with my older brother and he I used to frequent another shop in Clarence together. Since I have been in the city for about 8 years now, this place tends to be my go to spot. In the opening of the movie American Gangster, Bumpy Johnson says to Denzel Washington's character -- "Where's the personal service? Where's the pride of ownership?" Well, it's on Virgil Avenue, That's where. The staff is expertly friendly and I say this knowing that I know a fair share about a good stick, but I always leave there with a little bit more knowledge than I had expected to leave with. The prices are comparable to other places, but the service is definitely better. The humidor room is a little small than you'd expect, but, it's a well-stocked venue. There's places to sit and relax if you wish to smoke there, or take them and go. I prefer to take them and go, as I like to smoke and walk. If you're a cigar smoker like me, check out this place, you'll be really happy you did. read more

There are some places that have a good selection of cigars that are high priced and service that is not very helpful. This place is not one of them. When entering the store, the smell of smoke is not very over powering, so you have the ability to smell the cigars and make a good selection. The brands are presented very well. The humidor is fully stocked with an excellent selection of cigars. Pricing of the cigars is very aggressive meaning pretty low concerning the other shops in the area. And finally the service is very good. The man behind the counter does not talk too much but he has a good attitude about his job and the product he is selling. I wanted to give 4.5 stars, but 5 is good for this establishment. read more

Virgil Ave is our favorite tobacconist in Buffalo. The guys there are friendly with an air of camaraderie from the first time you walk in. Antonio made this place for us. They have an excellent selection of humidors and accessories and cigars. The humidor isn't huge but it is very well stocked. The Rocky Patel smoking lounge is comfortable with 2 large TVs and some great atmospheric photos. There's also coffee (often cold and old but nevertheless, coffee) and a fridge with some pop you can buy. They don't mind you bringing in your own drinks as well which is cool. The clientele is easy to get along with and you can easily sit down and have a chat with most patrons. We'll be back here every time we're in the area! read more

I go here for two things mainly, pipe tobacco and a pack of Shermans. They have a fantastic selection of cigars, but after smoking nothing but Cuban cigars for over a year I just don't enjoy others as much. I'll buy a Montecristo 25 occasionally. The selection is great, and not just for cigars. Great selection of pipes, and accessories for cigars and pipes. I went there to buy my very cherry pipe tobacco, and was given a can of another blend for free which was incredible. The service is always great, the staff is knowledgeable and very willing to assist customers, especially newer less experienced ones. If you're looking for a great place, or a nice gift for a cigar or pipe smoker you can't do wrong here. read more

Apparently you can smoke inside there, and that fact alone attracts a certain sort of stuffy holier-than-thou clientle. I went into browse one day to see what the place was like, and I felt like I was completely unwelcome (could it have been that I don't smoke?). I got the feeling that browsing twenty-somethings were not welcome among the forties and up who were hanging out in there. I'm not an expert in cigars or anything, but they did have an impressive selection of cigars, by far the best I've seen in Buffalo. I mean, if you're a bit older and know your cigars, this place is probably awesome, you may be welcomed with open arms to this place, which could be your paradise in Buffalo. Otherwise, if you're into cigarettes, I've never been glared at walking in Terrapin Station next door. read more

Great smoke shop. My go to spot when in buffalo and I don't have a cigar on me. Wish NY did't tax the hell out of cigars.

Went over to the states for a day and wanted to pick up some cigars as they are outrageously priced in Canada. Stopped by Virgil Avenue Tobacconist and had a great experience. Their humidor while not very big, has a great selection of cigars for whatever price range and taste your looking for. The owner Angelo couldn't have been nicer. He is very friendly and a funny guy. He suggested some good smokes based on what I was looking for. He even offered me the opportunity to hang out in the Rocky Patel smoking lounge while my wife was off shopping. I didn't get a chance to enjoy the lounge, but I will next time I stop by. As I was getting in my car to leave Angelo came out and met my wife and gave me a free cigar to smoke while I waited for my wife to shop at the Galleria. I will definitely come back to Virgil Avenue Tobacconist because of the great smokes at reasonable prices, but mostly because of the excellent customer service provided by Angelo. read more
