Have a decent mountain rig? Have a helmet and gloves? An itch for some adventure? If you answered "YES!" to all three then what are you waiting for? Get out there and make these trails your beach! [It's on an island... puns are fun!] After checking out the big 3 mountain biking trails in dade it was obvious that each one focused on different aspects of riding. VKT is the shortest, easiest to navigate / ride and most beginner friendly IMO. If you're looking to get into trails then this is where you should start. You should always ride at your level though. Even though they might be "Easy" in comparison to the more technical trails, there are still some painful surprises out here. On my most recent visit the trails were in need of some TLC. Signs were down, obstacles were broken, the maintenance box seemed like it was ganked and some hoodrats decided to make their own stupid obstacle - leaving behind a mess. Still a great trail non the less, especially when it's at it's full potential. Always take bug spray out here, the mosquito situation is quite precarious. Key Biscayne mosquitoes are like vampire zombies and really don't give a flying fox about anything. So if the bugspray isn't working then I suggest that you don't stop peddling. This is worst during the summer (duh?). Trail riding is really fun and can be an awesome workout if you push yourself. Always make sure to inspect your bicycle before riding. A loose component or crapped out brakes could lead to a crapped out face or worse. If you like being active outdoors then it's definitely something that you have to try at least twice.

    Trail in the middle ;)

Hi, my name is Melissa and I'm a MTB addict!!! Yes I'm completely obsessed with this sport. I just started MTBiking about 2 months ago and I wish I would have started earlier. I've had my MTB for a year but was dating a guy that scared the shit out of me.. by telling me that people were going to scream at me and it was very dangerous!!! SOOOOO Not true... one reason I'm not dating the guy. lol The sad thing about this sport is that there isn't a whole lot of places to go :( VKMBT is pretty close to me and I feel safe when I go there. I usually go with my brother to different trails, but when I'm alone I ALWAYS go here. The trails flow and you definitely don't get lost. At other parks, I must say I get a bit lost and forget where the trails I like are located. This place is perfect because it's pretty much a big circle. Other riders have been very nice and don't scream at me or intimidate me when I'm riding... yes I'm NOT super fast, but hey who gives a sh*t.. I'm having an amazing time. There is various type of trails, but compared to the other ones I think this one is GREAT for beginners or intermediate level riders. You do have to pay $6 + $1 for additional riders/bikes ... If not park in the public parking in front of VK and get a nice warm up before hitting the trails. Best time to go.. early early early morning :) It's absolutely perfect!!!! After about 10 a.m. it does get crowded on the weekend. Afternoon after 4 is good too. During the week: if you go at 3-4p.m. you might have the trails all to yourself. Some Advice girls: . Pee before you head over there... NOOOO bathrooms only one port-a-potty in the front that is probably beyond disgusting. You boys have it easy!! Urgh! Happy riding :)

The Virginia Key Mountain Bike Trails are now open and they are spectacular. The course designer, Bernard "Frenchy" Riviere and some volunteers built the course in less than 3 months with a small public investment and some donations including one from Mack Cycle and Fitness in South Miami. From the course, you get spectacular views of Fisher Island and Downtown Miami. There are Novice, Intermediate and Advanced Trails. Helmets are mandatory and cycling gloves recommended. My daughter and I checked out the course and started with a Novice Run. The course had a few steep bumps and some small deep patches of white sand which caused my back tire to slide a bit. I hadn't ridden my mountain bike for a long time so after my first Novice Trail, I was ready for more. Next, we tried an Intermediate Trail. Ugh, I use to think I was a Mountain Man from California but this trail is like a Double Black Diamond Ski Run. The next thing I knew, I found myself on the ground on the soft white sand. Even though I lowered my seat, you really need to be in the right gear and have momentum to attack the Intermediate Trail. After the first fall, I decided to take my time and walk my bike up and down some of the harder bumps. The next Novice Course, I completed putting my foot down only once. I could probably do it again without ever putting my foot down. I had gotten some of my pride back after the aforementioned disaster. I would recommend getting your Mountain Bike checked out before you check out The Virginia Key Mountain Bike Trails. All bike stores will do a tune up for you to ensure your bike is safe. You can't always get the tune up in one day so some planning is required. I would also invest in a larger hand pump to make sure your tires are perfectly inflated. You should also carry a spare inner tube. Directions by Car: To get to the Virginia Key Mountain Bike Trail, take the Rickenbacker Causeway to Virginia Key Park, Arthur Lamb Road. Take a left at Arthur Lamb Jr. Road. You will stop at the Park Entrance and pay a Day Use Fee. (If you are on your bicycle, there is no fee and you don't have to stop.) Follow the Road keeping to right at the fork. Arthur Lamb Road will wind to the left, you will go past the Windsurfing Beach entrance and the Road will wind right with Jimbos on your right side and the Mulch Plant on your left. At the very end of the road, you will see the entrance to the Mountain Bike Trails. There are some picnic benches on your left (don't go left to the Mulch Plant entrance). Directions by Bicycle: You can also park in Brickell and take your bicycle over the Rickenbacker Causeway like we did. It will take about 30+ minutes by bike to get to the Virginia Key Mountain Bike Trail. In summary, this is a great ride and workout.

Such a difference from what Virginia key started at, beginner or expert you'll have your share of fun and challenges. Keep it up Frenchie you are doing a great job designing and making these trails happen.

although a new park, virginia key offers beginner to advanced trials without the hassle of driving to oleta, markham, or amelia. it does cost to get here, key biscyane entrance fee, if you are driving. i believe bikes enter the park for free. i've ridden all the mtb trials in florida and virginia is definitely not the most technical or difficult by any means but the scenery, ambience, and people are what make it a cool place.

Entering the War Pig trail. GoPro ready!

A group of 5 of us have been going here for a couple of months and we love it. It's a 45 minute drive for a couple of us so after dealing with Miami traffic and paying the $6 park entry fee (I miss Ohio's free parks) you're ready to hammer some trails. After making a right at the fork, you park next to a sewage treatment plant. Some days it can smell worse by your car than the one porta potty that's available with no "TP for your b*nghole" (insert Beavis voice). We get there at 8am so the trails are pretty empty. Once you're familiar with the flow and the trails you like it's a really good workout challenging yourself to push a little harder than last time. I recommend good bug spray because the mosquitos here are aggressive!!! One stop in the middle of a trail and they attack in clusters even through clothing. The one thing that could improve is rider consideration particularly the road bike riders on the access road. We're ALL riders so we understand you want 3 feet of space but that doesn't mean you have to ride 6 across in each direction blocking the road for 4 wheeled vehicles. 2 abreast please!

Great mountain biking trail with a variety of courses to satisfy all skill levels. The trails are broken down into beginner, intermediate, and advanced, with signs and colors indicating difficulty type. Most trails also have cool names so you know which trail you are riding and can recommend to friends and other trail riders. There is a bike rental business at the beginning of the trails and at great prices so no need to buy an expensive bike if it's your first time here. On the weekends there are also bike demos with big name bike brands such as cannondale and giant which let you try out their bikes for free! My favorite thing about this park is the view! At the start of the trails and throughout riding you get glimpses of the beautiful city of Miami Beach and the boats passing by in government cut. There is also a view of the exclusive fisher island and it's mega yatchs parked across the water which isn't too hard on the eyes either. Come here any day of the week in good weather and you're bound to have a blast whether you're a professional mountain biker or it's your first time out on the trails.

Amazing views! A little oasis just minutes from the city

Its nice for me and others who want to hit the park extra early as its open at at least 7am, while most state parks don't open till 8am. Last week I came for my third round of disc at this course. Plenty of people have told me its one of the better courses in South Florida but I have only really played Broward courses. Last time I played this course it rained the whole time so not great. But this was a fine day. Getting there about 730am beat the crowd, big time. Even after warming up putting, I was the only car in the parking lot. And away I went. Its a nice course with white and red tees. I had a nice round, and I can see why it has a good reputation. It draws a good crowd at the park at the other areas, especially the Remote control(RC) areas. Plenty of planes up in the air. Its a great park, well worth the drive out West.

Always a nice park tondo various things for all ages big and small.

There are so many great parks in Coconut Creek where you can play, exercise, and enjoy nature but…read moredid you know there is another way to enjoy the outdoors in town? In addition to the parks, Coconut Creek also has greenways. The greenways are closed to vehicles and make safe travel possible. The city has made many improvements to the greenways through grants from Broward Beautiful, Kodak American Greenways, and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. The paths are often short, most are only a quarter of a mile, but they are still a nice place to walk around. The Long Pine Greenway is broken into north and south sections joined by a bridge. The north section at 5551 W. Hillsboro Boulevard is .18 of a mile and the south section at 6901 Lyons Road is .68 of a mile. The Long Pine Greenway runs through the West Creek Pineland Natural Area. It doesn't have a parking lot but you can access the greenway by parking in the lot on the side of the Dunkin Donuts. The Long Pine Greenway has a six foot wide paved path that leads across a very pretty 100 foot pedestrian bridge and on into a gazebo. Other amenities include benches, a bike rack, and informational signs. The preserve is a 7.43 acre tract that is important for migrating birds as well as providing a home for the birds that stay here year round. The vegetation consists of pine flatwoods, saw palmetto, and pineland grasses. Many kinds of birds, fish, and butterflies make their home here. I never fail to see tons of butterflies and birds. I also saw a lot of people out walking and biking this morning. There clearly is a demand for safe places to exercise outside. Across the street is the Helene Klein Preserve and Saw Palmetto Natural Area for more nature fun.

Sometimes though people see what may appear as an artistic piece of outdoor, street art such as a green bicycle (made out of 2" tubular metal) or my favorite being those yellow pineapples (also constructed out of 2" tubular metal). What people should know is typically these are actually art BUT they are also bicycle racks. I too, mistaken those artistic bicycle racks when I was driving along Lyons road and kept seeing one of those bicycle. I must've seen it at least 50 times without a thought but then I noticed out the corner of my eye that adjacent to it was a bicycle path leading away from all roadway traffic. After work that same day, I jumped on my bike to check it out. The trail begins as asphalt pavement and runs west from Lyons Road (at NW 69 Court) along a lovely nature preserve (West Creek Pineland Natural Area) made up mostly of pine trees, palm trees and includes a couple of park benches to have a seat and take in the scenery until the trail meets a waterway with a pedestrian bridge and gazebo with more seating. Looking in the water from the bridge you can find catfish, largemouth bass and tilapia. Continuing to the west the trail becomes a concrete path, still away from all vehicular traffic (residential apartments to the north side of the trail and some warehouse buildings but the trail is fully landscaped (although there is a lack of trees). Eventually the trails appears to end when it meets the back side of a Havarty's Furniture warehouse/retail store (to the south side of the path), but the trail actually continues along the lake to north side and yes, it's less attractive than the trail through the nature preserve but it's still a nice ride. The first time I rode this trail (greenway), it ended at here but since then the City of Coconut has continued the path to turn north thru Caligo Crossing retail plaza to actually end the trail at West Hillsboro Boulevard. And if you are up to it, the City has added a new trail (Greenway) on the other side of West Hillsboro Boulevard. It's vey short... then again, the Long Pine South Greenway trail is only 0.7 miles.

The waste authority paid the $5 million to build the park per an agreement they made. They needed to purchase some parcels of land the county did not own from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The foundation required that once the landfill closed it had to be turned into a park. The waste authority wanted to make the park a showcase of recycling and they used compost, mulch and plastic lumber and other recycled materials wherever possible. A restroom, two baseball diamonds, four soccer fields, a picnic area, lakes for boating and fishing, hiking trails, equestrian trials, and walking paths and a mountain bike challenge course were added to what was once a large modern garbage dump. Most of the park is spread out in between the four garbage hills. All four landfills hills were covered with a plastic liner and topped with two feet of soil and grass. You can see this park from the turnpike. I have often passed it and was intrigued because you never see hills in Florida. Across the street is the landfill that is currently being used. With nothing but time I finally stopped to see what was here. I took the trail from the parking lot to the top of the hill and it ended up being a mile. This was a fun and unique way to work out because it is difficult to find an incline unless you use a gym machine. From the top of the hill you could see people playing on the sports fields down below. All along the trail people were exercising at a safe distance apart. Even so the City of Palm Beach has now closed the park.
