I waited in the lobby area until Ashley was ready for me. She asked how I'd like my hair done and followed it perfectly. I like that she washed my hair and used an in-house made pomade when done. The decor is cool. You get a drink if you ask for it, which is nice. They make you feel comfortable and you get a decent haircut. Several months ago before I got married I needed a shave and hair cut but not just from any ordinary barber I knew I had to get it professionally done especially with my mug ( I have a lot of hair) so I came here and spent the extra dollar and let me tell you it is quite worth it. Just keep in mind everything here is booked in advance not a walk-in barber shop and a bit more pricey, But upon arriving for my cut the maître d' lol offered me a bourbon beer or water I opted for a bourbon and damn they give you a double if not more, so my barber was Bryan and he was great, very professional and very quick, I still have yet to have a shave that good , I usually do my own grooming and get by but when shit hits the fan or you need to look extra sharp I recommend coming here read more

My usual barber in Ho-Ho-Kus passed away from Covid over the summer and I have been going to a local super cuts for my last few cuts. After doing some research I was here yesterday for a cut. Sarah was my barber and she did a great job. I gave her by background information as I usually have a level three, rounded around the back, get rid of the sideburns, scissors up top. After taking my suggestions in, she gave her input. I decided that she was the professional and followed her lead. Hands down the best haircut I have received in years. Sarah paid attention and did everything perfectly. The kicker? She gave my neck a straight edge razor shave. I found my new barber. Good work ain't cheap...Cheap Work ain't good... Well...come here, and you get what you pay for - great service, and they wash your hair, free booze, on-time appointments, and barbers that know how to keep you looking sharp and on trend. First time here, the place gives off the vintage gentleman vibe. Made my appointment at 2:30pm but arrived 20 min late so they pushed my appointment back to 3:15 so I could be accommodated. Not a problem on my part, so I'm patiently waiting in their waiting area. The gentleman at the desk offered me a drink while I waited, and got a bottle of water. The waiting area is filled with vintage items which is cool and plays up to the aesthetic. However, I find the steel chairs not very comfortable for extended waiting times. As I waited I checked out some of the items and some of the things you can purchase. Lots of vintage tie clips, menswear, and some antiques. In addition they have their own styling products. At my check in time my barber Matt greeted me once he finished ringing up his last client. Very friendly and personable guy. Once we got acquainted and he uncovered what I wanted he went to work. He checked in every now and again during the cut to ensure I was in agreement with what was being done. Customer service wise Matt was very professional and accommodating. I thought I just want to clean up my current cut, but I decided to cut off all my dyed hair and he obliged promptly. The end results where pretty standard, I wouldn't get excited over it. But I must say, the website toots about the barbers being able to customize and carefully cut according to face shape providing barber/salon experience. I personally didn't feel that type of experience myself, but Matt did right by me. Didn't see any interesting cutting techniques that some barber done in the past, which some will cut more texture into my hair since it is rather thick. Once he blew out my hair I looked kinda puffy so he added product to refine it. Which was fine but I kinda wish he knew how to dry cut hair and made the top have more texture to it. read more

Awesome place, Once you step inside not only do you get that great feeling you stepped back in time to when gentlemen knew how to take care of themselves (really, what woman wants a man who cant keep himself well groomed?) but you also would think it could well be somewhere on the lower east side or west village. I made my appointment with Andre at 11:15am and they were very punctual which was appreciated bc I cant stand waiting. For the small amount of time I did wait, only bc I showed up early, Adam was a very gracious host and offered me coffee or drinks from their bar at least 3 times. I had just had some coffee so I politley refused. Ill def take him up on his offer my next visit, even if it was 11am, I couldve sworn that bottle of Frangelico was smiling at me. Andre did an awesome job on my hair, I had grown my hair out over the past 6 months, I have very thick curly hair and took it all off, down to a very short cut. He took his time, explained what he was doing and why, which I really appreciated. Def check this place out, whether ur in the area or not. You wont be dissapointed if you make a trip into waldwick just to see these guys, as I traveled from Staten Island, NY. I was expecting about a 35-40min cut, but it went about an hour. I had nothing to do so I didnt mind at all. Dont go here if ur in a rush to get cut and get out, not only will u ruin ur experience bc thats not the vibe in the shop at all, but also bc these guys are artisans, they really appreciate what they do and it shows. So if they feel they need to take their time so you walk out of their shop looking your absolute best, thats what they are gunna do. Enough talking. Amazing experience. Modeled on a late 1800's Barbershop its full of Americana. Old books and magazines, a cafe racer motorcycle, heritage barbers chairs and a kick ass whiskey selection he can you go wrong? Got there early for an appointment and was given a whiskey on the rocks while I hung out with the two English bulldogs. Got my head shaved and my beard trimmed with Dan. After reading great reviews and been looking for a good barber shop, I decided to give Virile a try. My appointment was with Jim, he was great and gave recommendations on what i could to do my hair. Jim gave me a clean cut and i was really happy with the results. Price is a bit high but i did not mind paying since thats the cost for a great haircut and to make me feel good. I grew up in Ramsey but haven't lived in the area for nearly five years. However, I always come back for the holidays and sometimes find that I need a haircut. Nearly every time I've been home these past years I've gone to a new barber/salon because I'm never really satisfied. This time, however, I've found a place that I'll continue to visit while home. It's really remarkable that such a place exists in Bergen county. As other reviews have pointed out, there is exceptional attention to detail in everything about Virile. Adam has done a fantastic job creating an ambiance that has a sense of timeless masculinity. I suppose one could call it the "evolution of the metrosexual", a trend among conscious males who embrace good grooming habits and style but do not wish to sacrifice masculinity in the process. When you walk in you are greeted by antiques from a bygone era, one that recalls scents of musk, leather, and gentlemanly commiseration. Adam has clearly worked very to collect antiques that are in such great quality. Examples include the two barber chairs from the turn of the century (19th to 20th, not 21st!), old-style shaving cream dispensers, and a hot-towel warmer from the 19th century. Now, all of this could be viewed a superfluous. After all, you're there for a haircut. I'm happy to report that I received one of the best haircuts I've ever had here. Adam clearly knows what he's doing and is open to suggesting new styles based on his experience and your individual tastes. Virile uses Square to accept payments, which is awesome. I personally think I'm very particular with my hair. In the past, I would be almost scared to get a haircut because I didn't want someone to f*** it up and leave the shop unsatisfied. After my previous barber moved away from the area, I was faced with the dilemma of finding a new barber and a new place to trust my hair. After doing a lot of research and scanning the field for a new place to trust with my hair, I found Virile. And I don't regret it one bit. I've been getting my cuts from Jim and I believe I found someone who I feel I can trust with my hair and feel comfortable in the chair. And to have that experience is all you can ask for when having a haircut. The best part about Virile is that they tell you their game plan about what they are going to do with your hair after you tell them what you want. If you listen to the barbers talk to their clients, you can immediately tell they know their craft and care about their customers (who are paying a decent amount for a good haircut - but totally worth it). I moved to NJ 7 years ago from Brooklyn NY. I could not find a spot to get a cut for the life of me, I'm a grown man and ever "barber" in north jersey was giving me a lineup. I had to unfortunately drive back into BK to get a real haircut. A year ago i googled looking for a hot shave in Northern NJ. I came across Virile Barbershop and have been a loyal customer. I personally use Nicolette, she is a great conversation and the girl can cut hair and shave with the best of them. I have also been late to an appointment and had to "settle" for Jim, who at the time was an apprentice and the dude gave me a great cut. Everyone in the shop has been great so far. The price is great, it's 2015, I pay around $20. Also while you wait you can have a cup of coffee or a nice drink. Sometimes there are dogs who are awesome. I love Virile!! My first visit here was in January 2016. My barbers have been Nicolette and Jim, both of whom are very friendly and personable people. In fact, all of the employees are kind here! Nicolette and Jim have always listened to my wants and needs, and ensured I left with the an awesome hair-do and was 100% satisifed. They were supberb in guiding me how to re-create the given hairstyle at home, too. In addition to great attention to detail, it was always nice catching up with them, and felt as though I was in the company of wonderful, life-long friends. I have since moved to South Jersey, so unfortunately, I can't make it here as often as before. I received literally the best haircut of my life. I didn't have to explain much of what I was looking for (just a normal, stylish cut!) and Adam took care of the rest. He listens to you and cares about making you look your best in a relaxed and positive atmosphere. If you want to chat and joke around, he's down...if you're more reserved or just tired...you can enjoy a quiet, comfortable break from the day. If you want to change something in the middle of the cut...you don't have to feel awkward about asking. The hot towel shaves are the best I've had. I have really sensitive skin and their skills with razors are unparalleled. The shop is a great little escape...incorporating an unpretentious throw-back style, with the comforts and accoutrements of a classic establishment. Always great music on and plenty of refreshments. Created a Yelp account just to write this review. I'll try to keep it short... Being a guy with extremely curly hair, it's really hard to find a style that looks modern, yet neat. It becomes even more so difficult when you decide you want to also rock a long beard. Adam at virile hooked me up with a really neat, classic cut, that helps my appearance look much more put together, and didn't cut my hair so short, as to rob me of my curls. I don't say this lightly, but I have honestly never been so satisfied by a haircut. The place is a tad pricey, and a tad small, but this hardly takes away from the quality of my experience. The guys, and gal(s?) at Virile, always seem to be taking their time to ensure a great cut. I even watched an apprentice barber do a 10 times better job at a taper than my local shop. There is no reason to give this shop anything less than top marks. I got my hair cut by Anthony and his customer service was second to none. I had a 5:00pm appointment for a Hair-cut and a shave. I walked in at 4:58pm and after about 2 minutes, I was greeted by Anthony and was sitting in the chair ready to get my hair cut, I always appreciate punctuality and on this day I was sitting in my barbers chair at exactly 5:00. This was my first time there so I was dreading having to explain how I wanted my hair to someone who has never cut my hair, but Anthony asked me intelligent questions to try to get to the bottom of what I wanted for my haircut and had it figured out in no time flat. He offered me a drink (Coffee, bourbon or water) I was in the mood to be pampered so I took him up on the bourbon, I dont know what kind of bourbon it was, but it was good and did the job. The haircut is great, I couldn't have asked for a better job, I have had great haircuts of similar quality before for a cheaper price, that being said, I have also had worse haircuts at a more expensive price.. Your not necessarily paying for a great haircut when you come to Virile, a great haircut should always be included in the price no matter where you are and no matter what you're paying. What you are paying for is professionalism, customer service and a barbershop experience that is second to none. The chairs are unique and comfortable, the barbers are all smiling and working on their clients while maintaining an awesome energy and charisma about them. I'm not a talkative person, in fact I usually always get my haircut in silence, but the environment at Virile had me talking to Anthony about life and about how he ended up working at Virile and many other things. In short... the place is worth the money, if you are just going for a hair cut its not going to break your bank, but if you can afford it, definitely take an opportunity to treat your self to a shave and a haircut, you wont regret it. Adam Ramos is a true straight razor master with a modern edge to him; he knows how to make a man feel the way a man should -- clean-shaven, dignified and able to tip his hat to all the that day has in store for him. His skill with a straight blade and scissors is matched only by his knowledge of barber shop etiquette and its history, as well as a deep sensitivity to and preservation of the age old ideals of chivalry. The power of prejudice My son and and my husband have been going to Virile for the past few months for a haircut with Nicolette. They waited 20 minutes for their initial appointment patiently. On their last appointment, the patience was not reciprocated. Due to route 4 and 17 traffic during rush-hour we were late for a scheduled 5:30 appointment and was understandably only able to be accommodated for one of the two appointments. Apologized and rescheduled my son's appointment for this week. They were 10 minutes late and there were no customers in the shop. Was told that Nicolette could not give a 'haircut' but just a trim. My husband agreed to the request but then was berated by Virile's owner Adam due being 10 minutes late. My husband tried to apologize understanding that this is a business but Adam just down right did NOT want his staff to serve my son and husband and said we were not welcomed. I don't understand the owner's refusal to serve us; it might have been because my husband has a thick accent. Maybe they don't like to serve people with accents. Prejudice maybe? I thought this place was hip, cool and progressive in an "old school" way but based on how they treated my family, I'm thinking they are not cool at all. Maybe when they say "old school" barber services they really mean old school prejudicial thinking. Think twice before coming to this Barber shop unless you fit a certain color, creed or religion. NO one should be treated this way in this day in age. read more

This is a great barber shop. The barbers are caring and attentive. They really do everything they can to make you feel comfortable. For me its about the service and its top notch, but everything else about the place is also really cool.
