The moment I walked in, I immediately felt welcomed. Bill asked me what my goals were and at the time, I had always been interested in trying kick boxing. I was provided with gloves and hand wraps to use and Coach Jake taught me how to wrap my hands. An hour and a bucket of sweat later, I signed up for a membership and decided to give Hard Knocks Muay Thai and MMA a try. Fast forward to almost 2 years later, this gym has become a huge part of my life in ways I couldn't have imagined. I did more than "try kick boxing". If I could give zero stars I absolutely would!…read more I have never done this before.... But.... I am sooooo completely blown away by this customer service I had to! I am attaching a text thread that I had with the owner of the studio Bobby. I found him completely professional and insulting. If you like people like that you will love this guy. He has a business practice not to provide prices over the phone, you have to come into the studio. Ok totally fine, even though I explained that I needed it in order to budget and that coming in just for that info was inconvenient. He proceeded to tell me that if that was too inconvenient then it would probably be too inconvenient for me to take my child there 2 or 3 times a week. No - sorry sir, I am business owner and single parent who needs to manage my time and money wisely. If I went to every studio that I was interested in I would never have time to make a commitment. He then compared himself to jewelery stores and car dealerships... Which we all know, everyone hates dealing with these 2 types of businesses due to their shady business practices - though now a days - car dealerships have caught on and have their prices plastered all over their website... For what reason? Oh, to attract customers! Then knocked the name of a VERY reputable martial arts studio which has been in business for over 30 years! Take a look at this thread and then tell me if you want your child training under someone who is so combative, unprofessional and plain rude. He is the type of person I am trying to protect my child from. I mean he mocked the name of another studio to make his studio look better?! Who does that?! Then when I told him that this was going to be posted on Yelp and Google, he said people like me love to do that... No sir, I do not love to do that... It's my duty to inform those of extremely poor experiences so that I can save someone else from having a similar experience. If you look at another reviewer they also mention that he has shady business practices and would not honor the Groupon's that he has already sold! It's sad, I see he is a good instructor but integrity is everything. Also, isn't humility a characteristic that martial arts is supposed to teach? How can one learn humility from someone like this? This is a great school if you plan to start any martial arts program. The ratio between higher…read moreranks and instructors to lower ranks is rare. That tells you something either about the head instructor and the type of student that practices here. It takes a while, but if you put your heart and mind into it, black belt is quite attainable. The facilities are good, but if I could, i would give it a 4.99 star rating because the changing rooms can get a bit crowded. But once you're on the mat, there's plenty of room for throws, sweeps and rolls. AC wold be a big plus during the summer months, but I'm sure they didn't have the most ideal training conditions during the feudal Japanese era. I mention this because some of the techniques have been handed down from that long ago.

I've been attending Theodorou Academy for just under 2 years, and have a background in Shotokan…read moreKarate and briefly in MMA. That said, you DON'T need experience to start here; my past martial arts education, while also great, was nearly the opposite of the teaching style and curriculum at this school. Theodorou Academy has a great balance: fun, varied classes that let you learn a wide variety of techniques, but with a fairly solid curriculum and underlying structure that help you plan your own education at the school and go at your own pace. There are two things I really appreciate about this place: 1) It's not competitive. Everyone at this school goes at their own pace, on their own time, as their own life allows, and that's completely fine. I like to come down as often as possible; other people only come down a couple times a month. 2) This school fosters a sense of community as much as possible. Students are supportive of each other both in the dojo and out; after each monthly belt test, there are usually a few people who go out to a local bar together to celebrate. People who have major life events while they train here are often appreciated or congratulated; if you've been gone for a while, you usually receive a jovial welcome when you get back on the mat. Overall, I would strongly recommend this place to anyone interested in the martial arts unless you are looking to fight competitively.
