This place is a joke! My husband took the eye exam here and was expecting to receive the contact lenses in a week or so. We called and checked for the status multiple times but the arrival time kept changing. 3 months later, we still hadn't received the order and was told that the contact lenses were out of stock. Poor customer service by office staff. I've been a patient there for over five years and spent thousands of dollars through insurance and out of pocket. They can't even return a phone call regarding a defective pair of prescription sunglasses I bought there a few months ago despite being told they would. How long would a return call take? Two minutes? Their "excuse": busy and understaffed. No problem. There are many places in Castro Valley that can take on a new patient. It's time for a new exam and glasses. read more

My daughter had an appointment at 4pm today with Dr. Wong at Vision Gallery Optometric Center. We arrived at approximately 3:50pm. At 4:03pm Dr. Wong walked into a room (he was on the phone in a room behind receptionist desk talking on phone - could clearly be heard) to see another patient so since no one was at the front desk I said "hello" 3 times before someone came out (a woman with blue hair throughout). I asked since the Dr just went into see a patient at 4:03 when my daughter was supposed to be seen at 4pm how long did she think we may have to wait to which the woman at the desk said i should have been here at 4:30pm. When I asked why I would be here at 4:30pm for a 4:00 appointment her response was "because that is how we do it". "Do what" I said, you aren't making any sense" She asked me if I received a text message yesterday reminding me of the appointment to which I responded "yes I did" and her response was "well, had you read it you would have been here at 4:30". I pulled out my phone and showed the text I got from them and it very clearly states, "please reply YES to confirm your appt at 4:00 pm on Friday, March 18, 2022". I replied YES (copy of text attached). By the way this was a 6 month follow up......not an exam. I was then told to leave because I had attitude to which I responded "oh this is in no way attitude, this is frustration because I took off work early and hurried my daughter from school to be here for the 4pm appointment. I have every right to be frustrated". She told me to get out again and I said no problem but this time I gave her attitude and told her to "stick it up her a**" and left. Dr. Wong is a good Dr. but unfortunately he just lost me and my daughter as a patient and I have called 4 family members and a friend so far who go to him and told them what happened and they too agree Dr. Wong is good but not so good that any of us will tolerate being treated that way - beware of going to this office, unless you want to be treated like crap and disrespectfully! I have also posted this experience at 2 other sites and on one of them had many responses all with similar experiences with Dr. Wong's staff. read more

This review is only for their COVID safety practices. I called from the parking lot to see if they were ready for me. When I got in there was a staff member helping someone out with glass that was wearing a face shield only with no mask. They took my temperature and asked me a few COVID questions. After that they did my normal prescreening then I waited for the doctor for over 30 minutes. In every other medical office I've been in during COVID I've been asked to wait in my car until they were ready for me. The staff member with the face shield later took it off and was walking around the office without a mask the whole time. I asked the doctor about it and he said she had trouble breathing. I told him that want ok and she should be here if she can't wear a mask. I will not be going back here while COVID restrictions are still in affect. read more

I really don't know anything about the optometrists at Vision Gallery because I went there only to find new glasses, but my experience there was bad enough to inspire me to write a letter to complain about their one remaining optician. When I first visited to select frames, there were three opticians working there. The one who "helped" me was Shyrley and when I returned a full month later, the other two had quit and she was the only one left. When I came in for my fitting, I brought in three other pairs of my glasses (sunglasses, reading glasses, and current frames) in order to let an optician know what I did and did not want in a pair of frames. I have vision insurance and Shyrley use that fact to jump to a bad conclusion. Without asking me, she simply assumed that I would want frames that did not exceed VSP's frame allowance. Not so. I tried to state very clearly the kinds of frames I wanted by telling her "no cat-eyes" and telling her that I wanted frames for a small bridge and a narrow face. It's really difficult to select frames when one is wearing a mask. Shyrley simply was not listening to me. It was hard to visualize what the frame would look like when my full face was showing, so I (foolishly) relied on her to help me find frames that would suit my preferences and fit well. She did not deserve the trust I placed in her listening skills. I ended up with a pair of cat-eyed frames that was far too wide for my face. She fitted me into a 54 ml frame and the great-fitting one I selected at another shop is a 47 and looks and feels great. In order to undo the mess, I ended up having to pay a lab fee and start over again at another optical shop. If Shyrley is still the only optician at Vision Gallery, I strongly recommend that you go elsewhere if you want someone who will listen to you and help you select frames the that YOU like. Another problem with Vision Gallery's being so seriously understaffed on the optical side is that your glasses may come in a week or ten days before they will have time to schedule a fitting with you. Avoid this shop, at least for now. read more

Unfortunately, I had a serious problem with the prescription from this office. As it tuned out, I was prescribed progressive lenses instead of single vision ones. I empathized multiple times during the visit I had no complaints about close up and intermediate vision. I almost got into a severe car accident as a result because of insane peripheral blurriness. The ophthalmologist gave me zero heads up about this technology. I also wasted 3k on glasses on top of that which are absolutely useless now because I cannot see anything close and I cannot drive in them. After 1 month trying to adjust and leaving in hell Lenses should be replaced. This practice either negligent or unprofessional, probably both. read more

Not sure how this place gets good reviews. Maybe i caught the wrong team. The staff seems like they're there for summer camp instead of work. Optometrist is pleasant, but you're dealing with them for like 10 minutes out of the 60 minutes you're waiting around. Check prices before paying. They might take your insurance but you should check the neighboring stores as they seem way more professional. read more

Sent an inquiry online, then they called me to book an appt. on January 11, text me a confirmation on January 12, called me again to confirm on January 13 and sent a final text confirmation the day before my appt on January 23. I go in for my Saturday 8:30a appt, and they do not have me on the schedule. They told me I only did the online form and I never confirmed. Following the start of the pandemic, this office simply would not return phone calls involving my new prescription. To be honest, it felt like patient abandonment. He did a total examination, explained everything to me, got me a referral to a specialist and comforted me the whole time while I was stressing out. He was great! The optometrist is great, it's the rest of the experience that has caused me to not want to go back. I like to feel like people are looking out for my best interest, and I didn't feel that here with the woman who helped me purchase my glasses. I was on the phone w/ my husband who was in shock that my glasses would be $500, so I and asked the sales woman if any "extras" could be removed to lower the cost (she didn't tell me what the extras were in the first place, just assumed I wanted them all). Total went from $500 to $200, then I got a comment about how I really should get some of those extras. I ended up paying more than I expected and to top it off I got a letter in the mail a month later saying I needed to send them $16 more. That's annoying. Overall, based on their selection and the sales people, I'll try to find another spot to go to even though the optometrist was really nice and helpful. read more

Due to the pandemic, Vision Gallery requires an appointment for customers including for the pick up of prescription glasses. I had an eye exam and received a new prescription. I ordered prescription glasses. After picking up the initial glasses, I ordered 3 pairs of prescription lenses for Oakley glasses I own. On November 20, 2021, I was notified the glasses were ready for pick up and to schedule an appointment for pick up. Over the next 2 weeks, I left 2 voicemail messages and sent 1 email requesting an appointment. They did not reply. Due to their lack of response, I sent an email and left a voicemail message expressing my disappointment at their failure to schedule an appointment and requested to speak with a manager/owner. I have yet to be contacted by a manager. I have communicated several times since. They have not replied, they have not scheduled an appointment, they still have my glasses. The prescription they issued was off. Due to their refusal to communicate with me, I had to go to another optometrist for a re-examination and to obtain replacement prescription lenses for the frames I do have. I requested the assistance of the Better Business in an effort to resolve this and get my personally owned Oakley frames back. Vision gallery refused to communicate with the Better Business Bureau. It has been two months and the Vision Gallery continues to hold my glasses and refuse to reply to my communications. HORRIBLE AND UNPROFESSIONAL SERVICE. This is a consumer nightmare. read more

I have had my eyes tested maybe 3 times here, as well as purchased glasses in the past. They are always courteous and professional, and very friendly. I even stopped by to see if I could have a pair of glasses that was missing a screw, and they took the time to fix my frame which made me most happy, as I really missed wearing that pair. I have been coming to Vision Gallery for over 23 years. I'm sad to say after today I think I will need to make a change. Not because of Dr Nelson or Dr Wong but because of some of their office help. It is such a shame that Stephanie is now only working Monday's. Good for her to be with her new baby! Congrats! But she is missed...especially her professionalism. But the customer service side of this business is and has been slipping year over year :( Example: I was standing at the front desk waiting to pick up my contacts and one of the gals behind the desk shot (on purpose) a rubber band at the young lady helping me. I said whoa... Where did that come from???and she pointed to the gal to the left of her saying from the jokester! Mind you having fun at work is fine but when you are doing this in front of patients it's NOT. If that would have overshot its intended mark and hit me that is not a good thing. And it's not just this incidence...obviously. But, just the lackadaisical attitude and lack of follow up and communication from the office to their patients. Which is crucial to great customer service and client/ patient retention. Maybe I will call and speak with Dr Nelson because I know he would not appreciate this behavior from some his office staff. I really like Vision Gallery. The been coming here for about two years and the staff is very friendly and the doctors are excellent. I've had Dr. Atkinson and Dr. Nelson, they were both helpful and Dr. Nelson taught me things about my eyes that I did not know. This place has a lot more upto date machines than other optometrist offices I've been to which makes for better eye exams and better at catching any signs of early eye problems. The biggest thing I appreciated about Vision Gallery was their sanitation. Every single time I went to a different machine the girl wiped it down with a new alcohol wipe. They carry lots of high end brands such as Gucci, Fendi, Juicy Coutoure and tons more. What girl doesn't want top of the line glasses? read more

Dr. Wong is a very good optometrist. The nice young lady that took the pictures and did the exams on all the equipment was very professional, sweet and patient with my son. That being said, i took my son there explicitly because they had a wave scanner to read his eyes, I wanted to see if a machine would give a similar or very different prescription versus the doctor. Well apparently their machine isn't that good so they just use it as a starting point. I wan'ted a fresh prescription because I didn't trust the work the Kaiser doctor did. In the end I handed over his old prescription and Dr. Wong's prescription varied a little with a very good explanation why. Again, I like his service. The retinal imaging was good (extra $39) and gave some insight into my son's optic nerve. It took over an hour and at the end, I asked the eye glass lady for his PD and she REFUSED. She would not measure that until we bought some glasses. Of course, none of them are quite covered, and of course, the $212 nike ones look so much better according to her than the nearly identical $132 kirkers. I was planning to bring my disabled brother there for the digital exam, but I guess I'm going to have to take him to lensecrafters and try out their Accuexam system for him. I let this wait a few days to see if I was still as irritated. I am. Oh yeah, they asked many times what my contact preference was... email.... email.... email... email. Wish I could give 0 stars! Super bummed out I have been going here for over 4 years. I recently went in to just pick up contacts and it turned out horrible. The Dr. asked how to pronounce my name even though I am (was) a loyal customer. He yelled at me on how I was wrong about my prescription and after 50minutes of the Dr. yelling at me he finally realized he was wrong and I was right. He still wouldn't admit it and subtlety called me stupid even though he is the one who f'ed up. what an idiot. don't go here unless you want to end up being yelled at because you're a female who's a young adult! My initial appointment was about an hour and I was very glad he was able to take care of me on such short notice. The staff and everyone here is extremely nice and helpful. I just got my first set of specs from this here place--they have a good selection IMO. I have no vision coverage, so the cost is very pricey--however, they did give me a discount since I ordered regular specs and sunglasses. My mini goes here as well, so now it's in the family to come here for our vision needs. I like both Dr. Nelson & Dr. Wong a lot. The rest of the staff here--I have not yet experienced to be rude, actually for all the times we've gone to the office, they have been helpful and friendly. I am happy with this office. read more

TLDR; Dr. John Wong had no bedside manners that all doctors should have with patients. He complained about my (very common) eye boogers during my appointment. He made comments like "your vision is really bad" throughout the appointment. I know my vision is poor: that's why I'm seeing an optometrist! He also repeated "do you understand what I am saying?" numerous times during my visit, as if I could not comprehend him (despite my frequent "I see" and "that makes sense" responses?). These comments made me feel extremely uncomfortable, as if he thought I was a burden and an annoyance to him. When he asked me which prescription adjustment is better, 1 or 2, he apparently needed an immediate, definite answer. I told him both were the same, and somehow this frustrated him and he proceeded to tell me that if I "could not cooperate with him" that "we are done here." Other optometrists from other offices I've have never had any issue if two prescriptions were similar and indistinguishable to me, and never threatened to prematurely end a scheduled appointment. Patients should not walk out feeling uncomfortable and unwelcome. I do not recommend Dr. Wong's services. read more

Dr. Wong and all of his staff are the best eye care team I've encountered in years- and I've been wearing contacts for 22 years! The office staff are friendly and accommodating (I was late twice and had to reschedule once but always so kind and helpful), and Dr. Wong was thorough in his exam and in providing important information about caring properly for my eyes. I honestly can't recommend them enough! Ps- don't be fooled, this office is near another opticians but make sure you go to the right office because they are wonderful!! read more

Three weeks waiting for a replacement frame to show up. When it did arrive I was told to come pick them up. Asked if they were open the following day and was told in fact they were. Took time off work to go get them and they were closed that day. Make three trips to get them and when I finally got the replacement frames, they were the wrong ones. Then....6 month later I received another bill for more money. Had already paid out of pocket up front, they wanted more. Lost a customer. read more

We have gone here a few times. The Dr. we see is great. The front office help can be gossipy sometimes and seem to get confused on our dual coverage insurance every time. It takes several people to look at it and figure out what we owe each time we are there. read more
