In fact, you can get a gate key to short-cut the access the park and its sandy beaches. It has a fabulous gravelled beach walk that goes around the outside of the resort on the ocean and the estuary. We didn't use the pool or the hot tub but they seemed to be well used. The main club house had a pool table and there was an ice cream social while we were there. Also Name That Tune and karaoke. Horseshoe pits, lawn bowling, and plenty of chairs and picnic tables in the common area in front of the beach. In front is a large gravel protrusion into the ocean with lots of driftwood to build forts. Tennis and pickleball courts also appear well maintained. There are several clubhouses with bathrooms, showers, laundry and games rooms. All were extremely clean and up to date. $2 a wash and $2 to dry. One time we were camped amongst RV's with no view. Once right next to the estuary and the third time next to the estuary and with a view of the sunset over the Parksville Community Beach. This will continue to be our retreat during renovations or where we will recommend for our friends who visit.

I recommend taking Highway 1A and driving through the little towns of Chemainus (stop here if you have time, otherwise admire the many murals from your car), Saltair, and Ladysmith. 1A will take you to the Duke Point Ferry Terminal, or you can spend some time in Nanaimo and find the best Nanaimo bar (look up the Nanaimo Bar Trail and you'll find many suggestions for who sells them). Situated on a windy finger of land that shares Jack Point and Biggs Park, the ferry terminal itself is well organized and about 20+ lanes across. Buy your tickets online to save time and make sure you get to there an hour before departure. At the window, you can pay your fare or the agent will scan the prepaid barcode In your email. You are then assigned a lane. You can wait in your car or get out and walk around, grab a snack, use the restroom, take in the view, or pose with two orca statues flanking the walkway to the terminal. On the day we were there, two tents were set up with local arts and crafts. A large digital sign gave sailing information and PSAs about COVID safety. When it was time for everyone to board, an announcement was made asking us to return to our vehicles. About 10 or 15 minutes later, attendants guided us to the awaiting ferry. Everything was orderly and well organized, and I can't wait to come back.

Weather was blah over the weekend we went camping. So we purposely decided to go west instead of…read moreeast. Yes, west is much more sunnier and warmer. We chose Cowichan lake. Nixon Creek is the camp site located by Cowichan Lake (the lake is huge). There are 62 camp sites here .Wayne the camp site keeper keeps a good lookout and make sure the camp grounds are clean and free of crazies trying to burn it down. He also keeps a look out for big fire pits. He also makes sure the outhouse is well stocked with toilet paper and that the toilet lid is always closed. It cost $20 per night to camp here (by the water) and $18 away from the lake. They charge by camp site occupied. It is very beautiful place to camp and I have noticed people who camps here are all pro camper. Yes a lot of campers have their fancy vehicle roof top tents/ campers/ high end RV's. I am guessing this is an island thing. I had a fun time camping here and would highly recommend it. It is a very beautiful camp site/ lake. Super relaxing.

Parking can be problematic, as there were times when the garage was full. Restaurant food and drinks is a plus, and room service was excellent. All in all, we had a nice week there.

This is your spot. They'll only charge about $350 a night for the privilege. Staff was nice enough. They'll gladly tell you with a smile and a slight chuckle that you have to pack a bag and a lunch to retrieve ice from another Provence. After all, you're paying for their entertainment. Enjoy. Or maybe not. The view and location get them the 3 stars. For a 4th star I'll need an ice machine closer than the distance Tom Brady can launch a football.
