I'm not sure how to get started and even explain my time aboard this incredible train. The ride…read morewas four days of our 11 day trip and every minute was amazing. I had such a great time along with my wife and friends on the trip from Vancouver to Lake Louise and back to Vancouver from Jasper. My friend who is a real train buff told me about this over a year ago and definitely caught my attention. He told me all about this trip and the Gold Leaf package with the glass top trains. The seats were incredibly comfortable with personalized tilts, heating and foot rests. The service was spectacular, the meals below in the dining area are truly gourmet and delicious, while the views while dining were absolutely amazing-spectacular. From the second we got started you knew how special this trip was going to be. Don't worry if stairs aren't your thing... There is an elevator in the car for moving up and downstairs if you need it. We were picked up at the hotel and taken to the yard where the train is. It was like a parade. So many people having such a good time and so much anticipation. You make your way through the center then head out to your train car. The team members are there introducing themselves, helping you board [from the red carpet] and most importantly smiling. They know how much fun you're going to have. The lower level is the dining area. Tablecloths, silverware, the works. Food is gourmet quality, with multiple choices on their menu. Everything was delicious. I mean... they know how to hit out of the ballpark here. And it is all prepared on the train! The incredible snacks and drinks [including top-shelf liquor and wines] were offered throughout the trip. I think the bar opened at 9:30. The beauty of this train trip is that it only operates during daylight hours. I mean, how else would you see these amazing views. During the evenings, the trains are cleaned, windows washed and I guess food reloaded. Everyday is a new and adventurous one. The very knowledgable staff (guides) take you through the area with great history, fun facts and lots of interaction with the people waiting for the train to come through. The first evening, we landed (my word for arriving) in Kamloops. As I stated before, reservations are already made. They take you to the hotel and our bags were already inthe room. This is a science and they really have it figuered out. We worked our way up to Lake Louise where we were on coaches and small tour vehicles. Eventually making our way back to Jasper where we did the route in reverse and on a different set of tracks (and a whole lot of new views) back to Kamloops. I have attached many photos of the views and the food. I used my phone a lot and also my regular camera between the cars, where there is an area to take in the fresh mountain air and admire the scenery without glass. This was an unbelievable experience only heightened by my friend's love of railcars and history. I photographed the scenery and Tony explained the different cars as we passed by many freight trains. I can not recommend this incredible experience enough. I wear my Rocky Mountaineer pin very prouldly and love to speak about the experience. Take a look at some pictures I took along the way. They definitely tell the story. HUGE KUDOs to the AMAZING TEAM at Rocky Mountaineer.

I signed up for the Rocky Mountaineer from VanCouver to Jasper with plans to then drive from Jasper…read moreto Banff. The marketing for the Rocky Mountaineer is excellent but my own reality was very different than I expected. It is a very expensive experience even at our "Silver" level but I decided to splurge as it was a "once in a lifetime experience". Maybe when I'm in my 80s.... First of all the good things - The staff onboard our train car were very professional, friendly and informative along the journey. They were absolutely great and helped make the trip more fun. My personal experience - and others may disagree: * The food was just average - not the gourmet experience that was advertised. I had the chicken with asparagus for lunch and the chicken was dry and the asparagus was hard as a railway spike. The breakfast was also just average - I've had better at Starbucks to be honest. * The scenery was nice but we saw better sights that we could stop and explore when we drove instead of taking the train. We only saw a few mountain goats and they were very far away. * We were on the train for about 11 hours and I felt very claustrophobic after a few hours. I've been on many Amtrak trains and other varieties in europe and on every train you can walk from car to car and stretch your legs and see different views. Not on the Rocky Mountaineer - you are confined to your train car and your assigned seats. This was miserable for me after a few hours and there isn't any break to stop and get off until the end of the day. Our train stopped in Kamloops after the first day and we stayed in a hotel for the evening with the train scheduled to go from Kamloops to Jasper the next day. I couldn't stand the thought of being trapped in a train car for another day and choose to cut my looses and rent a car instead of getting back on the train. I had a great time being able to stop where I wanted, eating at local restraints and seeing animals along the way. Your experience may be different but be warned - there is a lot of time sitting on a train car and then waiting for transportation to/from hotels. You can save a ton of money and have a better experience simply renting a car and driving.
