I cannot believe how many successful and knowledgeable professionals today that started at Oaksterdam. I love everything they stand for and definitely recommend above any educational institution to gain your medical plant experience here. They are completely hands on and have the best teachers who have such extensive backgrounds. They've been around a long while and in that time the biggest names were produced from their curriculum. The administration was very flexible when I first started and it was easy to get the classes you needed, however as the school has grown it's difficult to accommodate everyone. As a solution they are putting out the next terms schedule in advance so you can better schedule your life. I also work in the library for work-study, and it has a lot of great resources! Not only does AIMC have a great location in the heart of Berkeley, but it's progressive and open minded. In clinic there have been days where I had fewer patients, and now I am always full scheduled. That's how it will be in your own practices, you need to market yourself and work hard to retain patients. Luckily, if you have no patients while in school, you can take that time to really pick your supervisor's brain and learn even more! Patient Perspective: You are being worked on by students - some are nervous, some are naturally better at first. But they all want to be here, this is not a profession our parents forced onto us....every student I have met has chosen to be here. We love this medicine. We are eager and excited to help you. Each student has their own style and don't be afraid to try out different students. Costs are low and the quality of care is great. There are 10 treatment rooms - the walls are a bit thin, usually you cant hear actual words of the person in the next room but you will hear noise - bring ear plugs or music. This is a great place to get introduced to acupuncture, the treatments are cheap (community style starting at $10, professionals ~$85) and the students have the time and are excited to explain and introduce you to the methods and medicine!

DVC-San Ramon is one of several places to make online appointments for the vaccine in Contra Costa County for ages 16+. LOCATION and PARKING The main admin building is on East Campus, right off Watermill Rd. Follow the traffic circle and signs toward parking for COVID19 vaccines. I wound up parking near the Dougherty Station Library and Acorn Learning Center, which is a short walk to the main entrance. APPOINTMENT LINE They'll line you up outside every 6-feet in groups according to your appointment time that you got from the Contra Costa County Health Services "Mychart" app. Very organized and they had two volunteers/staff members there to give instructions and answer questions. REGISTRATION This is in one of the rooms with over half-dozen stations where they'll ask for you ID and insurance card. One scary thing is that they may ask for SSN and Mother's Maiden Name. Yikes. I would recommend declining to answer. Afterwards, my cousin who's a pharmacist said this info is for folks without insurance. The clinic needs to recover costs by billing the government. But still, SSN is a bit too sensitive. They didn't ask me but I did hear folks at other stations get asked. VACCINES This is done in a separate room, and the nurse I had was great - funny and good at putting you to ease. I got the Pfizer vaccine and the process is quick and painless. All those daily Turkish Getups really beefed up my shoulders, LOL. OBSERVATION The last part of the process is to pick one of the "classrooms" and just hang out for 15 mins before leaving. Each room had a nurse who will wipe down the chairs as folks leave. They also have an oxygen tank just in case. Overall a pretty smooth process and well-run operation. Lines moved quickly. The nice thing is your second vaccine appointment is automatically scheduled for you, although you can use the Mychart app to change if needed. 3-6 weeks needed for Pfizer, while 4-6 weeks out for Moderna.

Don't underestimate the faculty at DVC simply because it's a community college. A lot of the professors here are research experts in their discipline, coming from prestigious universities like UC Berkeley. Some of them realize how important it is to fulfill education within CC students as well. I feel that I've made closer, supportive relationships with DVC professors compared to my professors at UCSB. I highly recommend visiting this campus if you want intrapersonal connections with your peers and mentors as it's a tight knit, small campus compared to the one in Pleasant Hill. Additionally, my tuition for the first two years was reimbursed including a lot of school expenses compensated for through the COVID-19 emergency grant which they no longer do. Going to DVC has saved me so much money, regained my confidence in higher education, and gave me the opportunity to meet great people, find my higher potential, and transfer into one of my dream universities. Even though I spent only 1 quick semester in-person due to COVID, I had an awesome experience. I am truly grateful for the time I had at DVC and now that I graduated with a bachelors I reflect on this. If I ever want to take any class for fun or take prerequisites for grad school, med school, law school etc. I could always come back here! In my experience, this so-called "certificate" is not a meaningful professional credential outside the university. It appears to be packaged and marketed like a specialized certificate program, but in reality it functions more like undergraduate coursework governed by the university's tuition and withdrawal policies. That distinction matters, and prospective students should understand exactly what they are signing up for before committing. The biggest issue is this: if you sign up and then decide not to continue, you may still be held responsible for the full $3,500 tuition. Yes, even if you do not actually participate in the program. That is an enormous financial risk for something promoted as a certificate. Most people hearing "certificate program" would not assume they are stepping into the same kind of rigid financial obligation as traditional undergraduate enrollment. What makes this worse is that you can end up being charged without meaningful access to the portal, course materials, or the actual product you believed you were purchasing. In other words, you may be expected to pay thousands of dollars while receiving little to nothing in return. That is why I am warning others now. There are far better and more widely recognized alternatives available. Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) is one example of a respected option used by social workers, EMTs, hospital systems, and other professionals. CPI also offers clearer training pathways and broader recognition in the field. My opinion is simple: this program feels misleading, overpriced, and predatory. The description may sound appealing on paper, but the financial and academic structure behind it is something prospective students should approach with extreme caution. Bottom line: do not enroll unless you are fully prepared to be charged $3,500 under university undergraduate policies, even if you later decide not to continue and even if you do not receive the access or value you expected. I would strongly encourage anyone considering this program to look at other options first.
