Contrary to UP's cited requirements (3.0 GPA or higher, no suspensions or excessive discipline…read morereports, etc.) Principal Valerie Hatcher rejected my son's application without hesitation. My soon-to-be Junior had a rocky Freshman year (which he's made up for), and now boasts a 3.82 GPA, and is slated to graduate early! Regardless of his current status, Ms. Hatcher concluded my son didn't meet UP's requirements because of a D on his 9th grade transcripts! It's pathetic that a school would dismiss a student's tenacious effort and progress because of a less than satisfactory FRESHMAN grade. Not only is there a transition phase kids face when moving from Jr High to High School, but these kids were also coming from virtual learning, mask requirements, etc. The district should really take these scenarios into consideration, and review UP's admission requirements - both published and unpublished.

Some of them were dressed up for the holidays in movie character costumes. The front office was decorated and the atmosphere was so cheery. There were other students and parents waiting in the small space near the front office desk. On the day of the test (Saturday)- The school has a large parking lot but it is shared with Victor Valley College (VVC). We weren't sure if we needed parking passes so I purchased a $3 pass for the day at one of the VVC ticket machines. The school appears to offer transportation to students as we saw several buses on the Friday we went. We also saw what appeared to be armed security guards wearing black. It's understandable with the recent school shootings in America. Overall, my daughter said her test taking experience was very good. She was able to find an outlet in the classroom she went to and plug in her laptop. Were very blessed and grateful to have had this school as a location for the test. Thanks Excelsior!!!

Her classroom is close to tyrany since she treats her students bad besides some of her favorite kids in her classes. Does not try to build you up but brings you down and makes you feel inferior. Some teachers in this school actually make sure their students feel welcome in this school, like Janice Keaton that teaches us things. Some of the security gaurds have a authority complex. Ms. Angela is very rude to students and doesn't here us out. Otherwise she is talking to the lids that she favorites. The security gaurd that also doubles as the baseball coach is also bery rude and makes students feel more like gum under his shoe than actual people. The dress code also is discriminatory towards the women students in the school. They worry more about how short their shorts are instead of the teachers that make students hold their bodily functions to wait for everybody to finish their test. I hate this school.

The teaching curriculum is that of one that was simply taken from online and there's no creativity or hands-on learning experiences. They fire most of the school counselors especially if a student is bonding with them in a healthy way, and they do not know how to handle a crisis such as a school shooting, or a threat of. For whatever reason, Snowline moved their band directors around to different schools. So, for the…read morelast year and a half, Serrano has had Mr. Fell for their band director. He is a new addition to the Snowline staff and has done wonders in the band room. The kids are excited, the band is growing again, and new students are learning instruments from scratch as well as others learning a second instrument. His focus has been on being the best you can be. The students are learning not to be afraid of messing up but instead learning from their mistakes as a whole group and individually. I think it's great how he has managed to turn the kids around in the short time he has been there and hope to continually see the transformation of the students in the future. Serrano also got a new principal around the same time. The office is much better now. It can still get confusing at times and you can see looks on faces every now and then but they try much harder than they did before to help you. The office has been rearranged so that there are now two doors that you can use to get into the office: one for attendance and one for the main office even though it is all open inside. Mr. Andrus has made lots of changes in the school and I'm seeing that the staff reflect the principal's expectation. The teachers are still awesome and always have been!!

A child works hard to make good choices despite circumstances out of their control then a staff like mz Conner takes it away unnecessarily. My daughter has worked hard to go to State Skills competition for the 3rd year in a row hoping to gain achievements that will help her with future education and career goals. She was given pizza to eat with no alternative choice and no option to go get her own food. And it made her nauseous. The School District is aware of her allergies and food sensitivities. Her allergies are no longer as severe as when she was younger, but they're still present and the school is aware. They've had documentation of that since she started at Pinon Hills Elem in Kindergarten. The skills staff were also aware because she was sick on the previous year's trip for the exact same thing. They acused her of throwing up even though no one actually saw her vomit. No student, teacher, CTE Coordinator, arena staff, or stranger saw her vomit! No one asked her. Mz Connor jumped to conclusions and over reacted and had her removed from the trip. No one would even listen to my daughter when she tried to explain over and over she wasn't sick. She even broke down crying and they still wouldn't hear her. Once staff realized they overreacted, they tried to justify making her leave for the safety of the other students on the trip. But how is her nausea due to eating dairy risk anyone's safety but her own? Where was the concern for my daughter's safety? When they figured out they messed up again, their concern was only about damage control, and making justification to protect the school. No concern for my daughter. Now she not only missed the experience of this trip but she also missed the opportunity to turn her hard work into an achievement that will help with college admissions and scholarship applications effecting her future. She had no fever, and despite the accusations she was not vomiting, she was coherent and present and behaving normally, she had no other symptoms. She shouldn't have had to give up this opportunity simply because Ms Connor had the title of CTE Coordinator and needed to flex on a child. Connor overreacted without even having the intellect to assess, ask questions, or even see my daughter for herself. She made the decision without ever having seen my daughter with her iwn eyes. Then when I was angry she called a principal who would rather agree than put any effort at all into considering what's best for the student. I wish I could say this surprises me, but this is not the first time Mz Hansen has shown this trait. It's not even the first time in the last 30 days. Shes shown this again and again. Im posting here because when you go to Snowline Joint Unified School District to be heard, your told the principal has to address the issue and the Superintendent rarely if ever overturns the principals decision. That is a direct quote from the Superintendent secretary just last month when this same school tried forcing my son to take a class that he didnt want to take, and didnt need credit for to graduate high school but was a wasted grade so it would effect his transcripts and his awarded academic scholarships. No wonder the Principal doesnt put in the effort to consider the best interests of the students, no one will disagree with her decisions. I realize staff are humans and can make mistakes too, but not once did this person take accountability or try to make it right. And why would she, when the principal won't put in any effort and the district backs her up. We try to teach our children about integrity, accountability, perseverance, and the importance of hard work and making good choices for their future. Just for staff to step all over them. I went to Serrano, I went to several schools in Snowline district and so did all my siblings and cousins. There use to be staff that valued it's students, advocated for its students, and taught them valuable life lesson instead of stomping on them. That's not the case today. I know this cant be fixed for my daughter. I know both the schools and the district's only action will be to cover themselves. But maybe this will help someone else advocate for their youth. Maybe if enough of us share concern change will be made to help other students.
