I was visiting Nevada City on a long awaited vacation. Due to hard and constant work in the construction industry for the last 18 years I have a chronically sore back from lifting wrong. The pain isn't bad enough for pain pills - but it's bad enough that I should probably see a chiropractor. After my friend saw me groan and stretch my back just from getting out of a car, she recommended that I should go to Vital Living for a massage and back treatment. Not my kind of thing, but hey I'm on vacation why not. The 'spa' happily for a guy like me was not a girly type of hairdresser spa. It was a very professional setup. Clean and peaceful and organized. After a massage and the back treatment, I felt like a new man. I don't think I've ever been that relaxed. Whatever that back treatment was, it did the trick. I don't know how long it will last, but man I feel great. They also recommended some yoga moves and gave me some tips for keeping myself healthy while I'm traveling. SHIRODHARA is legendary!! Not only did I experience relaxation, but I got to witness my brainwaves change and to actually see the process happening... I'm a curious being, so this type of "consciousness altering" experience was a treat for me :) The location is wonderful - right in magical downtown Nevada City, yet it still felt secluded in the upstairs location. It was clean and professional, and smelled heavenly. A little sanctuary. Valerie is a Goddess. She is beautiful, kind, brilliant, and dedicated to the science that is ayurveda - her beginning mantra felt like warm oil pouring itself inside my body, and that was at the very beginning of the treatment. I strongly recommend Ayurveda and VitalLiving Ayurveda to anyone looking for an effective way to maintain health or rejuvenate. I've done a Pancha Karma with VitalLiving Ayurveda -- it changed my life. It turned my burn out around, restored my energy and left me deeply rejuvenated. The VitalLiving Ayurveda staff are great. Tona and Valerie are very professional, competent, knowledgable, warm and fun to be around. Now, whenever I get focused on a work project and notice that I'm starting not to sleep well, am getting fatigued and feeling drained but have a hard time stopping, I go to VitalLiving for an abyhanga and a shirodhara. It completely resets me. I spend most of my time on a computer creating code. I've come to realize that I get hyperfocused on technology and become digitally toxic. Mind Blown! First of all, I'm using Yelp for the first time. It's awesome! Peer reviewed recommendations for finding places to go and things to do!? I'm the newest fan. This place lived up to it's reviews and more. The location was cool. Super close to downtown Nevada City and kind of tucked away by a creek. It was just a pleasure to walk into. I'm an Ayurvedic practitioner, so I knew that I wanted the treatments they offered. My therapist was great. Sweet, personable and competent. I got the Massage and Shirodhara combination, called the Kama. Amazing. The vibe was unique, sophisticated and earthy all at the same time. They have a small breakout room with a yoga mat and meditation pillow - and I was able to spend some time before my treatments stretching out my road weary self after traveling to Nevada City from Oregon. I've never been so rejuvenated in just 3 short days ever. My Pancha Karma treatment was beyond the most incredible experience in my life time. Valerie the most amazing, gifted and caring practitioner made me feel incredibly comfortable. My treatment came with amazing and tasty prepared breakfast lunch and dinner from Valerie. Lexi combines Ayuvedic bodywork and herbal knowledge with Thai massage as well as some amazing facial massage techniques, and the result is something that felt more deeply therapeutic than most bodywork I've ever received. She was super thoughtful of my needs, took care to focus on areas that were in extra pain/distress. She has a really healing touch, and she's kind of an alchemist - every element; from hydrating electrolytes to the medicinals in my steam were noticeably effective and enjoyable. Nice extra touch - the studio is a sensory delight, too. Everything smells amazing and it's very visually pleasing. It feels like your treatment starts when you enter the building. Side note - the steam treatment is a tent that sits over your whole body on the massage table, so you're lying down (which is wonderful as opposed to the seated type of tent), and it was wild to feel the pain melt away from my joints with the wet warmth. It also enabled my skin to absorb more of the oil from the massage and felt really nice for my lungs. Highly recommend. I'll be back!
