I put my husband in SC in August 2013 and was told the facility could handle an Alzheimer patient…read more Nothing could be further from the truth. They lied and told me it was a lock down facility and it was NOT. He tried to leave on many occasions and without my knowledge, they hired a company to come watch him and keep him "company". They charged me another $1800 on top of the $3000 I was paying and it was all 'out of pocket'. The director kept telling me that after I applied for VA assistance and he got approved, VA would reimburse me back to the date I first applied. Well, needless to say, VA declined to pay and the man at the VA office in Bartow never told me he was ineligible. When I got the decline, I called Bartow and that man had retired..conveniently! Also, my husband could walk and weighed about 175 when he went into SC. My first visit to him was devastating...he could hardly walk and had lost about 30 lbs. I found out they were not feeding him and by this time, he had lost the ability to feed himself properly. I took him out after 7 months and now take care of him at home with the help of Vitas Hospice. I make sure he is fed 3 full meals and lots of snacks during the day. I am horrified that a facility can lie to people and get away with it, like Savannah Court in Lake Wales. I have been recently advised that they have had 7-8 directors at the facility due to a very mean spirited regional manager who does not like to be confronted about the level of care and the treatment of the employees. Other persons have been taken out of SC and moved due to it not being a locked down facility and patients have gone out and fallen on the concrete and badly hurt. If you give this facility a good review, then you really haven't paid much attention to your loved one's care.

Hospice patients are put in the oldest building on the campus directly next and under the helicopter flight path and landing area. Next to ambulance parking and loading docks. Noise non stop. Our "finest" room had one sofa to sleep on. I had to fight w charge nurse to move chairs to create a place to sleep next to my husband. No cleaning in room for six days. Inadequate saftey in bathroom and a communal shower! Total bio hazard! Save that one nurse the staff was wonderful, doctor caring but when I raised hell about the facility I was told improvements would be made but they would not be moving patients to any of their new construction or newly acquired buildings. They simply DO NOT CARE about dying patients. Its been a month since I requested from the hospice manager to be contacted by his direct boss. Nothing. My husband's remark when transfered " I worked hard all my life to die in a dump" My family is forever scarred by this place.

The hospice coordinator at the hospital was incredible...however after the first day I'm concerned…read more& considering switching providers. The description of services and the initial at home set up was nothing like we were told. When calling to notify we were home & we were told we'd get a tuck in visit, no one ever came. When calling the woman fumbled the phone & said she'd let someone know. The communication has been nonexistent. No call, no help getting us prepared at home. My Mother is pretty much bed bound & her husband needs guidance. Her meds were supposed to be in a "bubble wrap" set, easily labeled & prefilled syringes...this is not what we received. The at home hospital bed with special mattress looks ancient & doesn't have leg rails...not ideal. If this doesn't change I will be seeking a new provider very soon.
