She was focused, precise, and incredibly talented. What really stood out was her dedication--she even stayed after closing to make sure everything was perfect. Never go to viva salon The owner and the staff are the biggest scammers. They have a sign outside for services that are deals but once your in there they scam you. If it says 45$ for a route express touch up they will charge you 75$. the owner mike is so sneaky. Trust dont go there. They all over charge there and lie about there prices. GO TO ANOTHER SALON. AVOID. Whatever you do, do not go here. But if you decide to still go, avoid going to the male stylist. Two days ago, I went in for a SIMPLE bangs cut.. however that is not what I left with. I told him that my bangs had grown out too long, and I wanted them slightly shorter in a curtain bangs style. He told me to take a seat and not take off my coat because it would be done quick. (This should have been my first warning). He then began cutting my bangs in the strangest way possible and ruined my bangs. I got very upset and emotional, and he kept trying to convince me that I look "beautiful." I asked if I could speak to another hair stylist, and he said "I am the owner, you cant talk to anyone else." I wont be surprised if I receive a response to this as well. I left the salon in tears, and went across the parkade to LazRiel. The hair stylist took me in immediately and was shocked on how he cut my bangs. She was able to fix a little bit, but I will have to let it grow out for another month or so and get it PROPERLY cut. She didnt even let me pay her for attempting to fix it. read more

I really enjoyed my experience at Viva Hair. I had a complete make over done. When I arrived at the salon I had waist long, brown hair with grey streaks with absolutely no style at all. When I left I had bouncy shoulder length curls, shiny brown with blond highlights!! And new eyebrows to match!! I felt and looked great!! read more

Stopped by here after a surgery to have my hair washed and styled as I could not do it myself. I received good service and was taken back immediately upon arriving. As much as I appreciated the help and was happy with the look of my end results I do have one huge complaint. I spent two years growing my hair out after a botched haircut (another business) and am very particular about caring for my hair. When a professional uses heat without a heat protector...i am livid!! For this alone I will never return. I do not pay to have my hair damaged. read more

A good friend of mine went here and they dyed her hair orange and white. My family has been in the hair industry for years and we all know places make mistakes in every business, but to try to charge full price to fix a mistake it ridiculous. Most reputable places would fix it and give you a discount for the future to show their good faith and loyalty to customers. This is probably one of the worst run businesses in Calgary. I really don't even think the owner has any formal training. He probably just practiced on his barbie dolls. DO NOT even think about going here. You will get a bad cut and have to pay some one else to fix it. Filthy, over priced, and the worst customer service I have ever experienced. I am a stay at home mom. I have very little spare time, so I was so excited to have an hour to go get a blowdry. Now for me I have curly thick hair, so I really wanted the stylist to do a round brush blow dry, as I cannot do that at home. The service was just ok. Not terrible, not great. My hair looked ok when I left. It took a long time. I asked her to round brush it twice and she didn't. Not a good shampoo and no head massage. I also don't know her name as she didn't introduce herself. She was a nice enough girl. Lots lacked on quality of the service and experience. It never hurts to offer a coffee and magazine! I made an appt, showed my pictures of what i wanted my hair to look like and it seemed like the guy understood. I was there for 4 hours, and i got a tiny bit of color i wanted on the very top of my hair and the rest of hair was brown. I got told i could come in within two weeks and get it retouched, i had to be cause with the first wash all my color washed away. I went in again, got a color a liked a lot better but the guy didn't dry my hair! I had to walk out with soaking wet hair. I thought he was joking. I don't recommend this place, nothing but problems, and the cost of the hair cut was way to much for what i got. I paid $300 for crap. read more

I have been going to Mike for cuts for over 20 years. Even when I was in the states, I would arrange trips back to Calgary so he could cut my hair. I am always greeted warmly and offered a coffee or other drink. The atmosphere is friendly and positive. I've noticed that many of the people there are repeat customers. My hair is washed and rinsed, Mike askes me what I want, and he proceedes to cut with skill and enthusiasm. So, I'm delighted to have my hair done there and would not hesitate to recommend Viva to anyone. Good place, good service, good people. read more

I have been here twice and the service is always excellent. I had a baby last year so it feels extra amazing to get pampered and to feel special for an hour or so. Last year, Courtney did a fabulous job on my hair and I was hoping to see her again but I booked an appointment last minute. She wasn't available but the owner Mike did my hair and I feel like a brand new woman! He listened attentively to what I was looking for and did his magic. Afterwards, his wife gave me a sugar facial. Love, love, love! My face was baby soft, fuzz and excess hair free, afterwards. Anyway, the service was wonderful from start to finish. I didn't wait long to be seen, was offered refreshments and was treated with the utmost care. Will 100% be back with my friends and family! read more

DO NOT GO HERE!!!! WORST CUT I'VE EVER SEEN!!! I took my daughter to this location for a hair cut last night. She is 9 and was excited to get a few inches cut off of her long hair. We had an appointment with the owner, Mike. When we got there Mike said that he only does dry cuts. I was assuming that he would wash and dry her hair after the cut as I had been told this was included with the kids cut price of $25-$35. He kept commenting on how long and beautiful her hair was. I now realize that he meant that it was long and too much work for him. Instead of telling me this job was too much for his lack of skill, he proceeded to cut her hair picking up random chunks, hacking it off and chopping into it. He never once even measured to make sure the cut was even. Not only that but I watched him drop the comb he was using on her hair, onto the ground, and then pick it up and use it directly on her hair again. Disgusting! I can't even express how bad the work is! It's embarrassing actually. It is completely uneven on the sides and there is a huge hole in the back of her hair. I showed it to another hairdresser today and she was mortified. She said she will need to lose another 3 inches in order to even it out. I phoned Viva today and asked to speak with Mike about the cut. He called me back and I explained the situation. I told him how unhappy my daughter is with the cut and he first tried to tell me that the cut was beautiful. Crooked hair is not beautiful Mike! I told him that she is not comfortable with him cutting her hair again and that she is owed a proper cut and a wash, or a refund. He said that is not store policy. I asked if someone else at the salon could do a proper cut and he said the whole salon only provides dry cuts and that she would be charged $60 to come back for a cut and a wash, as she has long hair. I asked Mike why he didn't tell me that when we walked in the salon last night and he had nothing to say for himself. Clearly he thought it was a better idea to provide horrible service and not admit to me that he did not have enough training to provide the service that was requested of him. I truly can not believe that the owner of the salon is such a horrible stylist, as well as business man. The customer is always right Mike. Especially when the service that was given is appalling. This says a lot to me about what kind of mentoring he provides to the stylists he hires. I hope they don't all cut the way he does, but he left me with the impression that this is the case. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!! I was charged $40 in the end for a hack job. I have to pay the same amount to have this work fixed immediately. Mike refused to refund my money so that I could have it fixed by someone who knows what they're doing. He even went on to tell me that he is a wonderful stylist and compare himself to stylists in New York! Ha! Nice try Mike. Time for you to head back to school or sell your business! read more

I decided to try this place out as we just moved to the area and I saw a sign advertising a free hair cut with color or highlights. It was the worst hair experience I have ever had. When I called, I requested an experienced stylist, and I got the owner, Mike, who had with 20+ years of experience, which I was happy about. When I got there, I showed him a picture of the colors I usually got my hair done (it was a picture taken of ME just after the last time I got it done), and I explained that I was growing my hair out so just wanted to trim the ends. He seemed to brush me off, saying "okay, okay, okay" and he began to cut (BUTCHER) my hair. I saw 3-4 inches falling off and told him that was way too much and he assured me it was just the top layer to give it more depth and movement and that "all the Victoria Secret models did it this way". I let it go, telling myself hair grows back, and being 7 months pregnant it would grow back even quicker. I asked him what brand of coloring they use and he brought me the hair swab book to look at colors, and he showed me the base color he was going to use, which I agreed with - a nice, rich, chocolate brown. I pointed out the color I wanted for the highlights (a rich, golden red color) and he again seemed to brush me off. When he came with the color for the highlights I thought it looked way to light and asked what color it was and he just said "Oh you'll love it, it;s nice and rich like you said". I asked him if it was blonde and again stated I do not like or want blonde in my hair. He again brushed me off and said it was rich like I wanted and "would look beautiful with the brown". After he applied the highlights he passed me off to a helper of some sort who had clearly no idea what she was doing. It took her 40 minutes to apply the remaining color and she was getting the dye all over my face and she missed some spots that I had to point out. And then they left me in my chair for close to 1 hour. By this point we were well past the 2 hour mark and I commented on how long it had been and asked if we were almost done and Mike said these things take time and that they would be keeping me all day. I hoped he was joking. When they finally took the foils out and washed my hair I wanted to cry. The highlights were a gross, brassy, blonde and they looked un even and scattered about, and the rest of my hair was black. On top of that, I had dye all over my face - I mean all over! On my cheeks, my neck, all over my hair line. I asked Mike if he could get the dye out as I had pictures tomorrow and he assured me he could (He never could get it out). I told Mike the highlights were way too light and BLONDE and that I hated blonde and he just said you couldn't really tell until it was dry, but I insisted it was blonde and too light. He asked me to show the picture I showed him prior again and he grabbed the hair swab book again to point out what color I had wanted. He said he could fix it "no problem" but by this time it had been 3.5 hours and I had to go. He assured me it would take 10-15 minutes, so I let him try to fix it. Not only did it take an extra 40 minutes, it came out PINK!!!!! I had black hair with PINK highlights (I'm a 31 year old mother of 2 in suburbia who wanted my usual hair - dark brown with golden red highlights). He tried to convince me it wasn't pink and kept complimenting the color and saying how nice it was. It was around this time (while he was drying my hair) that I noticed the horrendous hair cut he had given me!!! It was "layered" on one side, uneven and very short on top. I wanted to scream and cry, but kept my calm and told him my hair was PINK and that I was not happy. He offered to fix it "anytime", and I told him I would have to go somewhere else to get it fixed as he clearly did not know his colors every well. When it came time to pay they tried to charge me full price, and when I told her I was supposed to be getting my hair cut for free she told me that didn't apply to Mike. I told her Mike was the one who booked it. She went and came back and took $35 off the price. I asked her if their hair cuts were only $35 and she said they were when they were bundled together. I paid and left fuming angry. My hair looks RIDICULOUS. The dye stains around and on my face, the un even PINK highlights, black hair and terrible hair cut is a harsh reminder to do your research BEFORE trying someone new. I have an appointment with a new salon for a color correction tomorrow - which I will end up forking over more money to try and fix this idiot's work!! AVOID THIS GUY AND THIS PLACE!!!!! By the way, by the time I got out of there it was 4.5 hours!!! TOTAL WASTE OF A DAY!!! read more

I think she may have been just learning, but not impressed that I would have to spend $50 on a cut from someone that seems like she was still in training. On my first visit to Viva, I had asked Mike to take a 3/4" from my style i was already happy with. I had just wanted pretty much the style i came in with a little more style around my face in the bang area. In the process of cutting my hair and leaving me to look after another client who was getting a color, he turned me around to cut so i could not see what he was doing. I was shocked when I realized he cut more hair around my bangs that I wanted and without asking! He styled my hair around my face (cross over) which looked not too bad when i left the salon. However when i parted my hair in the middle wanting to keep it down there is simply no style at all ! He has butchered my style of layers which i was happy with and left my hair similar to a pageboy cut. In my experience other stylist I have had check and ask to see how much you want taken off before cutting the bang, front area. looking back i can see he wanted non of that. I have had no option but to hide my style by putting it up, (cross over) until it grows back in again which is going to take a little while. I wish I'read reviews first. I'll be looking elsewhere in the future 6 months down the road. How disappointing such a waste of my $65.00 to walk out with a style worse than i walked in with. fast forward, a couple of months later i got another cut at another salon for less than 1/2 the price and am very happy with, the stylist told me that my hair was cut uneven at the back and had to straightness in out! read more

Worst haircut I have ever had! Asked for long layers like I always have and I got a bob without any layers. I looked like a page boy. It was also visibly longer on one side. I told them this and the stylst said "we'll see once it's dry"... I practically had to beg him to make it even! Also, I asked for partial highlights and I got full highlights... then they charged me $130. I definitely won't return!! read more

DO NOT sit in the owner/manager of this salon's chair as he is a bad stylist and very rude!! I booked with this salon with great expectations of getting a great cut that would be stylish, easy to manage, age & professional appropriate. Instead I got butchered and walked out the salon totally shocked with a cross between a Miley Cyrus& Pink not the look I was going for at age 56 working in health care. He took all of 5 minutes to do a consultation and then whack, he took the scissors out and made the first and vital chop which was basically 1/2 from my scalp on one side so there was no turning back after that. I basically have an undercut all around my head and then long pieces, kinda like a comb over which I can at least hide the chop job underneath. Five minutes into the cut I said what are you doing leave me some hair, he got very defensive and told me I didn't know what I wanted and that I was going to love it. Then he said I have to color and higlight to "complete the look" and handed me over to a junior stylist that gave me highlights that started an inch from my roots. I have had highlights for over 30 years and I know they should't start an inch from the root line. After that Mike was very cold, rude and all I wanted to do was run out of the salon. I paid $165.00 for a hack job and VERY BAD highlights. This was Saturday, on Monday, I went to two professional salons and asked what they thought about my cut and color and they both agreed it was a hack job, done by an amateur who didn't know what they were doing and by trying to fix it, making it worse with every slice. I went back to the salon to discuss my concerns and ask for a refund let alone an apology for his work and he told me to get out of his salon and I was not the type of client he works on. REALLY??? What a professional. Whatever you do, think twice about booking at his salons, he is not only rude, but unprofessional, lacks skill as a stylist and thinks he is "above" his clients. Not much I can do but grow out my Miley cut over the next 6 months and not to go out in windy weather with my comb over. Stylists like him should have their licence revoked and suggestion go to management school to learn how to run a business and treat your customers!! read more

I explained to the receptionist what I wanted and she told me that the stylist would discuss all of this with before cutting. I have very short but curly hair that I wear straight. I asked to use the washroom and when I came out the stylist met me at the wash station and started with a wash after barely introducing herself. She did not ask what I wanted and when I try to explain things, she just kept on cutting. My previous cut elsewhere was very poor on the one side and she duplicated it almost perfectly. When it came time to blow dry she had no idea what style I had and did not use a round brush, so there was no lift at the roots. In order to get the lift she teased the hair into small curls. She also ignored the fact that I wear bangs straight across and the cut now made that impossible the end style looked like something an 80 year old grandmother might like. NEVER AGAIN. read more

This is a horrible salon. My sister in law booked all us bridesmaids in to get our hair styled along with hers of course. The three of us arrived on time and they called me in first, i sat in the in chair and he noticed I had extensions so he said he couldn't curl my hair, he "didn't know extensions" whatever the hell that means. So he called in the bride, she sat in the chair and he asked what she wanted done she said an updo and he says" oh I can't do updos" well what the hell do you do then?????? i then went immediately on the phone to contact Chatters who were very helpful, viva heard me being furious on the phone so they tried to assist in helping the bride so she wasn't late for her own wedding. One hairdresser did all three of us at one time, poor girl seemed like she was the only one who worked there. Then we went to pay the bride had 5 bobby pins in her and hair and they considered this an up do which costs $80.00. I WILL NEVER RETURN HERE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and i suggest you don't go ever! read more

Avoid this place at all costs. I was in about 5 weeks ago and was convinced into dying my hair brown and putting in highlights. The picture was fabulous. When my hair turned red everywhere that was dyed I went back in and the owner Mike (which had done my hair) said it looked like I had 4 months of growth. I had Diana blend my horrible hair color with blonde highlights (at an additional cost of $70) and told I would need a color correction on my hair to get rid of the red. When I talked to Mike about it he said he couldn't be responsible for any of the cost as he doesn't feel he did anything wrong as it is my hair that didn't take the color he put in. He no longer will look at my hair and old me to deal directly with Diana to come up with a plan to fix my hair, at my cost of course. So now $300 in and I still need a color correction and they won't call me back. Worst part, I put up with bad haircuts for almost 2 years from them out of fear of going somewhere else and receiving a worse haircut. Nearly $2500 spent in this salon and they don't feel my business is worth keeping. Unbelievable!! read more
