4 years ago my wife and I set out on the daunting task of finding a preschool for our first child…read more We had a very specific set of criteria in mind (no more than 15 mins from home OR work, no more than a 4:1 ratio for newborns, a reliable development/education program that prepared for school, and a caring, honest staff) and set out on a series of site visits and interviews before committing to enrollment. As luck would have it, and somewhat surprising to me at the time, The Goddard School at Walton Park was the first school we visited and was the heads and tails winner amongst the schools we sampled. The school has a separate Owner (Ted) and Education Director (Connie), which I really liked because it allows each to focus on their respective fortes. I take pride in asking really difficult questions and Ted passed our interview with flying colors. Not only did he go to great lengths to explain the multitude of reasons why we should enroll at The Goddard School, he did so without a single cross word about ANY of his competitors. Connie was equally impressive in our conversation, explaining the details of the Goddard development philosophy and how that tied into their preschool educational plan. Both are incredibly personable, warm, and approachable. Also, a great selling point for us is that Connie is a retired nurse, FANTASTIC to have on site. From the handmade artwork that I receive daily, to the personalized reports that are sent home each day, to the cleanliness of the facility, to the exceptional teaching staff, to the special events like Summer Cookouts, to the on-site amenities like Little Kicks (through the Richmond Kickers), The Goddard School has exceeded our expectations in just about every way. Folks tend to knock TGS for not providing lunch for their children; frankly, I like the ability to tailor our lunches to the specific likes and dislikes of our kids. While schools like Primrose may provide lunch, it is a single option each day and pickier (or diet-restricted) children may be out of luck. When you throw in perks like a multi-child discount and referral bonus, it is 5 Star all the way around. The entire staff goes out of their way to make not only the children, but also the parents, feel like a family. In summation, we love it here and are pretty sure that you will, too.

Why? because, she knew how to think around a problem, how to make an object if needed, how to work on a team, and how to listen to what the teachers had to say. 1) in 8th grade RWS students learn coding and they use computers, in fact, most Waldorf school grads are well above their peers in math and science, Why? because they know the beauty and why of math, not just the memorization of rote SOL questions. 2) Waldorf educated children write beautifully, they fall in love with verse, song and poetry early and are used to reciting and reading in public. 3) They can actually MAKE something, food, sewing, drawings, music, woodworking. Try teaching a group of college students at the nations top ranked school of art and design to make something.....I wish they were all Waldorf grads. 4) Waldorf students were a valued part of a class and school family, their voices were heard and respected, and they in turn hear others. They are unafraid to stand up to bullying or injustice. They do not judge others as less than worthy. Waldorf students are compassionate, they have not been hardened by a grinding rote school process with social dysfunction and cliques. Waldorf may not be for everyone, if your child has certain learning needs requiring support that only a big school system has, it won't be the answer for you. If you need constant support of your needs and to helicopter, it won't work for you, and it might just not fit your family, and that's ok, if it does work for you, embrace it!

What drew me to RWS was their philosophy around educating the whole child. The skills that children learn in a Waldorf program are designed to build a healthy, educated whole individual. A curious child that is nurtured becomes a life long learner. Not everyone is familiar with the Waldorf education and it's fundamentals. In summary we experienced inaccurate information from the director, an abscense of supervision in the classroom that resulted in injuries, a lack of updates in the daily portal, and an overall lack of parent/teacher communication. We expressed concerns with the lack of structure in the classroom and behavior issues among several kids (ours included). We were told on various occasions "The 2 year old room is chaos" and "The staff is overwhelmed." We were also told our child is copying the other kids and just going through a phase by a teacher's assistant when we would check in. After multiple kids were placed on "behavior plans" (ours included) we were told our child hasn't shown enough improvement in behavior and we will need to leave with a week's notice. The very next day our child was pushed to the ground, climbed on and scratched all over his neck and face by another child. We were told the incident "Got rough, and the other child is on a behavior plans and was sent home for the day". We are at a new daycare and seeing their day to day operation, I am so impressed by how the classroom operates calmly and smoothly throughout the day. There is proper supervision in the classroom and we have not had any behavior issues with our child or any other child at our new school/classroom. There was no structure, leadership, guidance & supervision in the 2 year old classroom at Bundle of Joy.
