Great venue! I enjoy watching plays and musicals and have been fortunate to visit and watch some good productions on stage from large to small, modern to historic theaters. Volcano, so far, has been the smallest venue I've walked into. I love it! It's waaaaaay off Broadway, historic and there's not a bad seat in the house! It's one of the little gems in the Gold Country. Last month I was lucky to attend and watch a special showing for our group at the historic Cobblestone Theatre. We met some of the Board of Director members and we listened and heard the enthusiasm from their stories as each shared a little about the theatre. I can't recall the others who spoke but can remember Bob, the Business Manager. VTC has been performing live theatrical productions since 1974. The Cobblestone Theatre was built in 1856. I believe there are only 50 seats in the house and they do fill up. During our visit we watched, or rather listened to, "Voices" as five women shared their life stories... each a separate experience and yet not alone. We would love to experience more productions here and watch local talent when we come back, perhaps in the summer, at their outdoor theater where I understand the venue is much bigger and can hold a lot more people. This historic theater was part of my YGCG. Part of the Volcano Adventure, our Friday night crew watched the opening performance of Voices at the Cobblestone Theater. Voices was actually a theater read rather than a play. The minimalist set and costumes allowed the audiences' entire focus to be on the five female characters and what they had to say. The lives of five very different women. The Volcano Theater is in its 45th year. They perform in the beautiful outdoor Volcano Amphitheater on Main Street and inside the Cobblestone Theater. The stone Cobblestone was once the cigar shop during the gold rush, now it's the smallest fixed seats theater in the state of California. The restoration is nicely done and provides wonderful intimate production. This small theater company continues to entertain us all with their ongoing seasonal productions, and always brings in the holiday season with their production of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. The large cast was very entertaining, actors of all ages, and all dedicated to their craft. Bravo! This year was again a big success and we're thankful that such a small company can keep up with the times. The VTC is celebrating their 37th year.....and we're looking forward to their 38th. We came up for a lovely evening at the St. George Hotel and attended Voices. The theatre is adorable and you can really fell the history and love right there. And the production quality is terrific. You can genuinely tell that the cast and crew care about their audience. We saw Voices and it wasn't like anything I had ever seen before. I thought it would be boring sitting there listening to 5 women talk but it was quite the opposite. Their stories were intriguing and I found myself anxiously waiting to hear the next sequence. The actresses were fully vested in their part and took us to vivid places and times and captured the authors emotions perfectly. read more

Who would have known this community theater was here? I attended the play Voices, it was such an intimate setting. You felt like you were a part of the play. The play focused on the lives of women at different moments in their lives. It was touching and left me wanting more. I look forward to visiting this beautiful community theater again. They also have an outdoor theater across the street that is open during the summer time. read more

We were in little Volcano for a Yelp weekend. Driving into Volcano is like going back in history! Who would expect an amphitheater and a small 50 sear theater called Volcano Theater Company. Using local talent for acting and directing what an amazing surprise to discover a play called "Voices" that was fitting for any theater in bigger cities - the acting was that good. This is worth keeping up with to see what other plays will be featured here. Not too far from Jackson CA and Sacramento. Love it here!! read more

Hello Out There, We came up here yesterday specifically to attend "A Charlie Brown Christmas." All of the roles were actually played by local kids. This was probably our 4th or 5th show to attend at this theater. The show was lots of fun. The indoor theater is fun because it only seats roughly 40 people. The outdoor amphitheater holds considerably more. A fun thing to do in the amphitheater is bring in your own dinner from across the street and libations. As always, the show was great and we had a great time. Loved the hot chocolate and cookies at intermission. We'll be back. read more

I love love love everything about this place. The theater is small but the productions are unique and always entertaining. We have seen several shows at the theater and have always been pleased with the performance, (that is probably an understatement), but our experience with 'James and the Giant Peach' at the amphitheater has sold us on season tickets for next year! read more

I've been in a few plays here and been in the audience for more than I can count. This is one of, if not the best, community theater company I've ever encountered. This is what local theater is all about. A ramshackle group of amateur thespians doing their often campy take on classics that have been analyzed and criticized for hundreds of years. What these part-time actors lack in acting skills they make up for with passion and an obvious enjoyment of the material. I recently saw a version of the children's classic "The Phantom Tollbooth" at the rustic Volcano Amphitheater. The play was funny and interpreted with great gusto. You can forgive any mistakes when watching a performance by close friends and neighbors straight out of your own small community. I give Volcano Theatre Company a standing ovation! read more

Went to se e "Visit to a Small Planet" last night in the Volcano Amphitheatre. It's a beautiful small outdoor amphitheater. On a tiny budget they cobbled together some corny special effects that suited the venue perfectly. If you are weekending in the area I highly recommend seeing a play here. read more

We went last night to see Boeing, Boeing, a French farce directed by Bob Duzdevich. It was funny in all the right places, and the multi-generational cast had good chemistry. We brought a picnic (get there before the doors open to get a good spot) and sat in short beach chairs to enjoy the gorgeous evening with the pleasant hum of happy conversation all around us. The show started right at 8 and kicked off a pleasant two hours among the pines as we followed the misadventures of a bachelor in Paris with three flight attendant girlfriends. The stone walls open to the sky and the grass terraces lend a warm and welcoming atmosphere. At intermission it's fun to meander around Main St, chatting. Out front was a table with coffee, tea, and cookies (for a donation). A great evening for a great price. We'll be back for the next production. read more
