I would rank my recent two-night stay at Volcano Village Estates one of my worst hotel experiences. My complaints center in four areas--food hygiene, safety, room cleanliness/condition, and total lack of owner communication. On day two of our stay, there was a cockroach on our breakfast inside our refrigerator. The innkeeper told me that in a rain forest, it's common to have insects in the rooms. I told her my concern was that the cockroach came in on the food, which raises significant concerns about food preparation and hygiene. (As an aside, I would not recommend opting for "breakfast", which was meager. For example, our first breakfast for two people consisted of two small burritos, which you had to heat yourself in the microwave, a kiwi, a tangerine, and a dozen grapes.) My safety concern was that there was a non-functional smoke alarm in my daughter's room when we arrived. Because there is no HVAC system, portable heaters are provided for heat at night. The innkeeper addressed the issue, which was due to a dead battery. A quick AI review (and yes, AI is not perfect!) says, "Hawaii requires functional smoke alarms in all residential dwellings, including hotels, rental properties, and multi-family homes. These alarms are generally mandated to be hardwired with battery backups, interconnected, and tested regularly." The system was not hardwired and obviously hadn't been tested. There were significant issues with room cleanliness/condition. My daughter's unit had a half eaten/half melted ice cream treat in the refrigerator when we arrived. Our room (called Papa) had unfinished plywood floors and walls except for the bath area, which was finished. The innkeeper said the owners "preferred it that way". On each side of the bed, there was a small carpet remnant that was dirty and stained. In our bath area, vanity lighting consisted on a single low wattage pendant light that was inadequate for shaving, make-up, etc. I raised all these issues with the innkeeper on the day of our departure and suggested that an adjustment on our room fees would be reasonable. The property manager responded promptly with an adjustment of about $100. I then suggested that a single night refund of one room fee would be more reasonable, but she said that the property owners would have to approve that, and I could expect a response in 2 days. Not receiving any response, I have since texted the innkeeper multiple times and was assured on each occasion that the owners would respond. Nothing has happened in three weeks. I write this review as an experienced traveler (over 50 countries) and as a vacation rental property owner. There are a multitude of problems with Volcano Village Estates compounded by the owner's indifference in addressing legitimate concerns. I would not recommend staying here. read more

I really wanted to like this place as much as the other reviewers, but call it dumb luck that we had a few not-so-good discoveries during our stay. PROS *Modern bathrooms with heated floors and a heated towel rack. *Clean sheets and a comfortable mattress. *Dehumidifier. *In-room breakfast and coffee. CONS *Found a used pair of men's underwear under the bed. *Two of the six legs of the bed were broken. *Low-drain toilet that is easy to clog, also evidenced by the next point. *Broken plunger, which made unclogging the toilet take longer than it should. Then, it wasn't replaced after our reporting it, so we had no choice but to use the broken plunger the second night as well. Protip: flush multiple times while you're using the toilet instead of once after you're finished like you would normally do. *The bathroom window is large and faces the front walkway, and although there is a blur effect on it, people can still easily make out your naked body if they decided to look in. *Saw at least three bugs (including one in the electrical outlet that we couldn't do anything about). The bungalow is charming and as modern as it can be, but you are essentially staying in a rural area with lots of nature. While the staff were friendly and apologetic about the underwear and plunger, I feel like they could have temporarily replaced the plunger with one from another room that wasn't being used, especially if clogged toilets are a known issue. The Volcano Village Estates is not a bad place to stay, is close to Volcano National Park, is better priced than other accommodations in the area, and I can easily see how one could have a better experience then we did. read more

We booked online for a Kama'aina rate for two nights at the Rainbow Falls Cottage and it was a magical experience: no TV, no wi-fi (there is, but you have to be in the main building for it to work), no phones. Instead, you will hear chirping birds, maybe the meow of the resident cat Pumpkin, the purring and cooing from the group of domesticated pheasants that roam the property, and the coqui frogs at night. Ownership changed from Hale Ohia Cottages to the current Volcano Village Estates after COVID. RAINBOW FALLS COTTAGE: Rainbow falls was larger in person than what it looked like on their website to me, at least. The cottage has small two-person porch, a bedroom, a kitchenette area and bathroom. The porch was small but just right for 2 persons. The chair cushions were kind of worn down but who cares, you're outside! The table had an uneven surface so we put our wine glasses on the porch rails. The main room had a queen sized bed which was rather soft and gave us backaches, but some people may prefer a softer bed. I ended up sleeping on the chaise lounge one night, mostly due to husband's snoring, but I did like the firmness of the lounge chair. Lighting in the room was very well thought-out. You can tell the owners have traveled to hotels and places with poor lighting and made sure this didn't happen on any of their properties (read my review for the Royal Kona Resort); there were many lamps and side-lights which you could use for mood as well as reading/packing. There's a gas fireplace you turn on with a remote, and it kept the room comfortable at night at the end of April, when temps went down into the upper 50s. There's no air conditioner as the temps up by volcanos are cooler. KITCHENETTE: Very well thought out, with small ceramic dishes, bowls, coffee cups, glass drinking glasses and wine glasses and silverware. I packed disposable paper plates because most places I've been to don't supply dishes/utensils, so this was a classy and nice surprise. There's a coffee maker with the inn's signature coffee blend enough for two cups; a mini-fridge with a freezer and a microwave. Breakfast is placed in the fridge daily for you so you can eat it whenever you want. First day it was 4 banana pancakes and a fruit platter. Second day was my favorite with "Volcano Blossoms"; eggs in a tortilla cup (vegetarian) or ham cup, which was very well thought-out and separated with waxed paper. My husband loved the egg in the ham cup. It was super tasty, wish I had the recipe! It also came with a fresh fruit plate. BATHROOM: The shower was a bit dark and small, but it's an old cottage and this was it's charm. There's a flexible shower hose that sometimes started making dripping noises at night, so I'd put the shower hose head down toward the floor and that took care of the problem. Shampoo/conditioner in dispensers on the wall. Mini bar soaps and fluffy, clean, amazing towels provided daily. Very comfy bathrobes also provided and we used those for the hot tub. Hot water plentiful. Toilet has dual-flush system. Seats are cold in the morning, but hey, you're in a rainforest! OTHER: Parking, free, no ridiculous "parking fees" like at other resorts. There is a carport with 3 covered spots but we just parked outdoors on the property. Hot tub near the cottage for use, large towels in a bin. Very relaxing in the early evening hours with a glass of wine, listening to the coqui frogs. The cottages provides you with a flash light so you can walk a few feet back to your cottage without a problem. Most of the cottage lights are already on at night on the porches, so it's not a big problem. We didn't get to see any stars in the night sky when we went as it was overcast, as a treat for us is to see the sky without city light pollution, but if you're able, go out into the evening and see the bright stars and maybe some shooting stars as well. A full moon night would be an extra bonus for ambience. We had a housekeeper named Valerie who kept our cottage spanking-clean. I actually had never seen a cottage or inn-type place that clean before. SPOTLESS. Even the mirrors, every corner, clean. Of course the carpet was a bit worn, but that's due to time, and you're supposed to take your shoes off, Hawaii-style, but I am sure some guest trudge in with shoes, a big no no in Hawaii. Valerie was super friendly and answered all of our questions regarding places to eat, things to see, etc. The lady that checked us in and who was there daily was also very nice. We got texts daily asking us if everything was OK, now that is FIVE STAR!! Although there were other guests, we didn't hear any noise. It was very quiet, serene and calm. At times we found ourselves whispering for no reason at all to preserve the quiet of the place. No mosquitos that we encountered here, as we were prepared with repellant but didn't need to use it. RETURN FACTOR - 100% YES, next time in the Pineapple Ohana Cottage as it has it's own private hot tub. read more

My husband and I stayed at the Pineapple Ohana cottage. It is a cozy cottage surrounded by lush ohia trees and beautiful flowers. No need for technology or a tv when you can sit in the chairs on the porch and listen to the variety of birds, relax in the hot tub outside in the cool breeze, or go on a hike in Volcano National Park a few minutes away. They give you 100% Kona coffee for two and a nice breakfast of pancakes and fresh fruit. You can also order packages that have wine from Volcano winery, chocolate dipped strawberries and pineapple, or get a massage added to make your getaway more special. Right across the street is eateries and a brewery so it really is the perfect retreat from the city. read more

I could not recommend this place enough!! I'm used to staying in your typical hotel properties--Hilton, Marriott, etc, this is a much more home-y feel, while still being romantic, beautiful, clean, and just everything good. The staff (especially Shivanne!! HUGE shoutout to her!) are extremely helpful, caring, and just wonderful people. The hotel provides breakfast for you, which on our particular days were French toast and egg bites, along with fresh fruit both days. Easy to tell they were both homemade, fresh and scrumptious. There's a hot tub outside which we enjoyed both of our nights. I miss this place so much already. It is surrounded by everything green and pretty. I'd highly recommend staying here if you're looking to spend some time in Volcano. read more

My husband and I decided to stay one night in volcano since we had driven over from Kona and wanted to see Kilauea eruption at sunrise. We booked Hale Ohia at the last minute. Communication was fast and professional. We were an hour late checking in and called to let the Innkeeper know. He was incredibly cheerful, greeted as as we got out of the car, offered umbrellas because it was raining and we were "those tourists" who dressed for Kona without preparing for the mountains. He went absolutely above and beyond to make us feel welcome by giving us tips on volcano viewing, directions to shops and suggestions on restaurants. The room is charming, the bed very comfy and because central heating is not really a thing in the Islands, they even thought to include electric blankets on the beds. There was breakfast in the fridge, a very well appointed coffee and tea bar and soft fluffy robes for lounging. My only complaint...It was such a coY room that it made it hard to get up so early to head to head to the volcano:) But we did and it was worth it. In a nutshell if you like excellenet guest service and cozy rooms on a beautifully landscaped property this is the place for you! read more

We've just returned from an outstanding excursion to the Big Island where we stayed in the most beautiful and charming  bungalows located at Volcano Village Estates. We truly could not have picked a better location to act as our point of departure as we explored the volcanic region of Hilo, Big Island. The team at Volcano Village Estates could not have been more accommodating, and a special thanks must go out to John who went above and beyond to make sure that our stay was both comfortable and well-spent. John and his team were so responsive and remained in communication with texts which made it quite easy to coordinate our arrival, departure, and several other important areas when communication was necessary or beneficial. The breakfast each morning was delicious too (I'm still reminiscing about the yummy French toast), the view was tropical at its best, and the rooms were perfect for our group of 6. We are already excited about future return visits and we would not dream of staying anywhere else in Hilo. We could not recommend this remarkable bread and breakfast styled place to stay in a tropical rainforest paradise. read more

If you plan to explore Volcanoes National Park, this is a great base! From here you're less than 10 minutes away from the entrance. Because we were so close we felt happy to hike in the morning, leave as started to rain and then return later (a seven-day permit to the park is $10). That's definitely not something you'd have the flexibility for if you're accommodation is on another part of the island. We loved the charming Ihilani cottage with its leaded skylight and cozy fireplace. The updated interior made it such an inviting place to lounge around and read in. And with the equipped kitchen, we were able to make tea and store perishable items in the fridge. The estate is very quiet and dark at night so sleep should come easy. There's wifi but no television or phones. If volcanoes are on your Big Island itinerary, I'd highly recommend two nights at Hale Ohia! read more

We stayed in the Pineapple Ohana, an amazing honeymoon bungalow in Volcano Village Estate. The property is just minutes drive from the Volcano National park and everything essential to experience in Volcano. The Bungalow is located towards the end of the property which makes it the most private, with a beautiful terrace and a lounging table and chair, best for star-gazing and enjoying breakfast! Entering the room, we were pleasantly surprised by a cozy see-through fireplace on the left, and a lounging area and an indoor breakfast area. This makes a perfect set-up for work (if you must) or just to sit around at nighttime and enjoy a cup of tea. moving forward to the bathroom, there is a big shower area, vanity and a bathtub with a private views of the surrounding lush greenery. I can confidently say, the bath I took here was -the best- bath I've taken in my life! The Cottage is a split level layout, a few steps down you enter a round bedroom with sky light and the see-through fire place opens to the bedroom for a magical stay. We visited in Feb, which means we had the fireplace on during night time, with listening to the rain drops hitting the sky light. The only regret we have was not to stay here longer. We really are hoping to be back soon! PS. We spent each morning walking around the property and continued to discover new plants and flowers in this tropical paradise! read more

The staff is warm and welcoming, the cottage was very clean and tidy, and the location is right outside the national park and the village. The most tranquil and serene cottage I've ever stayed in. Loved everything about this property, including Michael - the host, baker and care taker! We stayed in Cottage 44 which Michael had originally built for himself. It was well designed and cozy, full of character and charm. The gas fireplace kept us warm throughout the evenings. The bedroom is an old recycled water barrel - really cool. It's super private, the bath looks out in to the rainforest and feels like a luxurious spa! For breakfast, Michael stocks our kitchenette with fresh baked banana bread (he bakes them every morning), passion fruit juice, ripe papaya and apple bananas. We don't like to stuff ourselves silly in the mornings so this was the perfect amount for my husband and I. This was our favourite lodging throughout our trip - and there are some serious contenders, including the Fairmont Orchid and Hapuna Prince on the gold coast. read more

I absolutely loved staying here. I stayed in the Ihilani Cottage, and it was both well-maintained and cozy. The cottage was perfectly furnished and decorated. I wish we could have stayed longer. The location is also perfect if you want to catch the orange glow of the lava from the caldera at night. The location is a little remote, so there aren't too many dining options around. We ended up eating at the Kilauea Lodge, which was also just really perfect for the weekend. The only drawback is that if you check in past 5 pm, it's a self check in. For us, that meant we couldn't figure out how to turn on the fireplace (huge shame) and we couldn't find the iron (in the dish cabinet). Oh well, I hope that just means that there'll be a next time. read more

These cottages are located on beautifully landscaped grounds near Kilauea Volcano. When you arrive you will be graciously greeted by Ashley and taken to your special cottage. She will take all the time needed to explain the amenities and also the history of the area. Coffee and fresh banana bread await you as well as fresh papaya in the refrigerator. Everything is clean and tidy and reflects the love and care the owners have for this lovely place. Our only complaint has to do with the heating system. There is no built-in heater and we had to use a small floor space heater with the worrisome habit of cord overheating. We elected to NOT leave it running during the night for safety reasons. I think if they installed a wall unit this would be a perfect little cottage. read more

We were looking for a place to stay near the Volcano National Park without paying a fortune to stay in the park and happened to stumble upon these cottages. Located approximately 1 mile from the park, it is conveniently right off of Hwy 11. Let me preface by saying that overall we were very pleased with Hale Ohia, as it carries a quaint, cozy, historic feel, but with modern accommodations (internet, electricity). The staff is extremely friendly. Functioning more like a bed and breakfast, we were given home made banana/coconut bread, papaya, juice, bananas for breakfast. The linens were clean, the cabinets filled with dishes and silverware, and bathrooms filled with clean towels. Since it serves more like a cottage/cabin, there is no TV. However, there is internet, a refrigerator, and a microwave. Additionally, there are plenty of novels, and board games to entertain. A point of needed improvement: there's no central heating unit. The main heat comes from the electric fireplace. It does get cold at times (it was a bit cold and rainy when we visited), so having a centralized heating system would have been nice. My MAIN reason for deducting 3 stars: as I was brushing my teeth, a roach crawled out of he sink. That just killed it for me. read more

We had a wonderful time staying at Volcano village estates in the Umauma Falls cottage. The property is located off the highway on a private driveway and is surrounded by rainforest, which was full of blooming ginger and other flowering plants, the grounds were luxuriously landscaped and well maintained. Our cottage was spotlessly clean (not a single dust bunny under the bed) and we were welcomed with a nice note and breakfast for the next day. Breakfasts were great, so nice having fresh food to start the morning and get out into the park. Our windows looked out onto a private lanai/deck and it felt extremely private. The staff were incredibly friendly (while always allowing privacy) and chatting with them really made our experience - they shared the aloha spirit and were incredibly welcoming. I mentioned how incredible the ginger was and to my surprise when we returned home after a day of hiking in the park, a gorgeous bouquet of flowers from the property awaited us - the fragrance in the cottage lasted for the 4 days we were there. Can not recommend more, hope we make it back another time and can enjoy another cottage or bugalow! Mahalo Pua, Cesar, and the lady who's name I can't remember but who was so thoughtful and sweet. I should also mention that the property had recently changed owners, they were making improvements on various parts of property, so bad review over a year ago is likely no longer relevant. read more

I've been on the island for two months and was looking for a 1 night getaway and figured we would come see the Volcano. Location is super easy and very close to the volcano entrance and just few minutes walk to Thai Thai for dinner. We were upgraded to a king size bed and different room which was much appreciated. We were met in the parking lot and walked to our room. Upon entering our room we could smell how clean it was and even more excited about the actual room. It is very nice, very well stocked and the bathroom could be in a spa. Blown away by how nice this place is. Bed is super comfy and I already don't want to leave. If you are looking at this .... We looked for a place close to the National Park. We paid over $200 for one night. We stayed at one of rooms in the main building. I wouldn't recommend this hotel for anyone to stay. Pros: Very close to the National park friendly staff. Nicely decorated garden and outlook for taking nice looking photos. Cons: very strong mold smell (We arrived in day after several days of rain and this is an old wood house) we left the door and window open and still can smell it. We chose to stay here after reading the review on Yelp, and it was beautiful. We arrived after dark (um, don't take the interior road from Kona), so there was not someone to greet us; however there was a note left for us and our cabin was ready. The breakfast consisted of POG (pineapple-orange-guava juice), the amazing fresh bread, fresh fruit and coffee/tea. We had a fireplace and it warmed the room right up. The town of Volcano is a short drive to the National Park and we really enjoyed staying in the sleepy town. If you're looking for RnR in a lush tropical paradise off the beaten Hawaii path, try Hale Ohia. read more

We loved our 4 nights stay at this beautiful well maintained property. Upon arrival Michael was there to check us in. He made us feel very welcomed and at home. The cottages are minutes from Hawaii Volcano National Park and Volcano Village. This is our third time staying there with my husband and I. The first time we were with a group of six, and we were surprised at all the room in the one cottage. We had three sleeping areas for family members with a bathroom, and a kitchen. One of us loved to cook, so we had some home cooked food while staying there. I felt like I had stepped back in time and we relaxed with family. Everywhere it was so peaceful. Mike gave my partner and I a very warm welcome to Hale Ohia Cottages. It was about a 40 minute drive from Hilo and a 5 minute drive to Volcanoes National Park. This is the best possible place to stay when going to the park! We stayed in the Camelia Suite and you really get the sense of where you are- in wilderness, and we loved it! Such a nice retreat from O'ahu. Breakfast is in the room- fruit, amazing coffee, and delicious homemade zucchini bread made by Mike. I LOVED the cat Nixon, he was so cute and sweet. He was meowing at my door step to say hi. Bed was comfy, room had no bugs, clean, and was a pleasure! I would definitely stay there again! read more

It was a nice stay at Hale ohia cottages, the property is so beautifull, green and clean exactly as shown in the pictures ,I and my husband loved the place , it was so beautiful ,quiet and peacefull , rooms are nice and clean it was a great place to relax ,there are lots of local restaurant nearby and we love the Thai Thai restaurant which is nearly 5min drive from the cottage, if you are planning to visit Volcano National Park, so this cottage is very near to it hardly 3 min drive to Volcano National Park. The only thing I did not like that they did not kept the drinking water in the room, we also arrived late in evening so we did not asked for it as we did not get a chance to meet the staff, they kept my keys and cottage maps with necessary information at the office and informed us over call but luckily we have the water bottles with us. Only for this reason I am giving it a 4 star otherwise everything is good. read more

We stayed in one of the small cottages (whichever one used to be the gardener's quarters way back when - I can't remember the name though...) and it was perfect for the five of us! Three bedrooms with comfy beds. It was clean and well done for sure. I guess a big thing for me at places like this is that the bathrooms always seem a little shifty to me... but this bathroom was modern and well done. The shower felt GREAT after hiking all over volcanoes all day!!! We enjoyed the random games and books left out - it gave it kind of a campy feel that is a huge 180 from the resort that we stayed at for the rest of our time on the other side of the island, but a welcome one. We had a great time! The fresh juice, homemade bread, coffee, tea, and fresh papaya was a great breakfast and just a nice touch! The cat is deaf, so please be careful when driving through the parking lot - and it should be noted that although the cat is super adorable it has a creepy meow that scares the pants off you in the middle of the night until you know what it is!!! Super cute though and just wonders around the grounds. Definitely stay here when experiencing Volcanoes National Park - Super convenient location, fun experience, and great owners! read more

We slept under the shadow of a volcano for 2 nights in October at Hale Ohia Cottages, a quiet, charming inn just off the main highway and a mile from the park entrance. It makes for a great jumping off point to explore Volcano National Park and the south side of Big Island. The staff is friendly, helpful and unobtrusive. The beautiful and lush tropical setting is definitely something you won't find back on the mainland. The gardens around the cottages are pretty - a relaxing place. The convenient location is a plus since you can easily come back to your room after a morning in the park, take a break and head back out in the afternoon. We stayed in the main house, which actually just has one guest room. The hallway connecting the bedroom and bathroom is just off the main office, but the hall door is kept closed so you have privacy. The office also closes up around 5pm, so the building is very quiet. The room is a good value and comfortable, though it lacks a fireplace and hot tub that some of the cottages have. We did notice we could hear cars go by on the highway late at night, but it was more of a hushed whisper of tires on rain-soaked pavement in the distance. Breakfast is left in your room - fresh papaya or mango with coconut, mango or banana bread, and fruit juice. There's a coffee maker and small refrigerator. The coffee is very good. I think we were expecting a regular B&B with breakfast, which it isn't at all - no forced awkward conversations with the people next to you, but no freshly-made omelets either. The charm and quiet, convenient location wins the day. We could have stayed in Hilo, but this was a much better choice. And the volcano was quiet, too. read more

I've stayed at Hale Ohia about 5 times. It is my go to place in Volcanoe. I've also stayed at Kilauea Lodge, and I did like it, but it just doesn't compare to Hale Ohia in my opinion. Hale Ohia is magical. The rooms couldn't be cuter. They are usually individual cabins with fireplaces, though I've stayed in a big room in the main house and that was super cool too. The grounds at Hale Ohia are as gorgeous as can be. We took a day off from trekking once and just sat in the ferns on their chairs and vegged for half a day. It was amazing. The rooms are clean and well done. They smell good too and the beds are comfy. I recently booked a room (the water cooler tower room) and was so looking forward to visitIng Volcano with my Fiance. This past sunday my best friend fell terribly Ill. He ended up in the ICU and is on life support. It is a really long story, but the point is this: I explained my situation to the folks at Hale Ohia and they allowed me to cancel. To me, this is above and beyond. Yes. I'm a repeat customer so I'm sure that helped. But folks...in this world of slash and burn economics, in this world of get the money now and run, this kind of service and HUMANITY is unheard of. They had zero obligation to let me out of the booking. They could have told me to fly a kite, and I even let them know in my email canceling to them that I expected them to. BUT THEY DIDN'T. I've had the worst week of my life. This lifted my spirit. Hale Ohia is the nicest place you can stay on all of the Big Island IMO. We chose between staying here and Mauna Kea Beach Hotel (which we also love), but the people at Hale Ohia, the cabins, and the surrounding grounds will always keep me coming back. Hale Ohia is run by a man who moved from Kentucky (where I'm from) decades ago and now lives out a lovely Hawaiian existence just outside the national park. He was very helpful and rather thrilled to have us. We stayed in Cottage 44 which is a charming little one bedroom home built from the remnants of an old water tank. The circular bedroom is comprised by the body of the tank. A galley kitchen, small living room with fireplace, and well-appointed bathroom (stall shower and bathtub, copious Ralph Lauren towels), are just up the stairs from the tank. There is an L-shaped window seat in the living room that can accomodate a 3rd guest for sleeping. A delightful covered porch with two chairs and a covered car parking hut are just outside. Everything is a bit miniature but wonderfully adequate. Fresh fruit, bread, and juice are replaced each afternoon so that breakfast is at the ready. The bulding is situated on wonderfully landscaped grounds so that the view outside every window is natural and rainforesty. Flowers, trees, and plenty of shade. The interior of the cottage is thoughtfully decorated with small pieces of art, a well-loved collection of books, and some even more well-loved board games. It's truly like staying in someone's home. Overall, we had a great experience here and would return. The proximity to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park really can't be beat without staying physically inside the park. read more

Utterly charming and a fantastic place to base yourself for exploring Volcanoes National Park. It's right off of Highway 11, but you'd never know it given how quiet the grounds are. My husband and I stayed in the Iiwi room which shares walls with two other rooms and is below a room, so you do get a bit of noise from your neighbors since everyone has hardwood floors and fairly thin walls. Our first night was very quiet as no one was in any of the other rooms, and our second night was less quiet given that people were upstairs and walking around at 5:20AM. To Hale Ohia's credit, they do mention that this room is noisier than others and they do caution people to be respectful of the other rooms. The rooms are all decorated nicely and are spotless - much more so than any other places we stayed on Maui, the Big Island, or Oahu. There are mini-refrigerators in every room, and a tasty (and filling!) breakfast of fresh bread (seriously AMAZING coconut bread one morning!), juice, coffee, tea, and cocoa, and fresh fruit is provided. The staff were all very friendly and helpful in providing maps and details on the town of Volcano. Additionally, Hale Ohia has flashlights for viewing the lava in the park, but they don't guarantee the batteries. Books abound in the main house and our room even had a couple of shelves of books and current magazines. The resident cat, Dixon, is very sociable and politely came to visit our room each morning. He sleeps in the gravel driveway during the day - so do be careful when driving in and out of the property. The gardens around the house are carefully tended and provided great places to lounge with a good book and glass of wine at the end of the day. All in all, a lovely place to be with the added bonus of being minutes away from the national park and right across the highway from the town of Volcano. read more

We stayed here 2 years ago for our honeymoon and just loved it. We stayed in the Ihilani suite. Really close to the park which was great for the nerdy science types like us! The grounds were so green and peaceful. The fireplace was warm and cozy and the bed was actually comfortable. Every morning we had homemade bread and the most delicious papaya and star fruit. I curled up in to the reading nook and enjoyed the ambiance. Rustic, unique and charming! read more

We had a really good two night stay here in late February. We loved our cozy bungalow (#44) with jetted tub and a gas fireplace open to the bedroom and 'parlor'. Breakfast, which is prepped the day before and taken in ones cottage, consisted of tropical fruit, sweet breakfast bread and plenty of self brewed coffee. Mike, our host, was gracious and accommodating. The location is slightly off what passes for the 'beaten path' hereabouts, but only a few minutes drive to the National Park or "downtown" Volcano (don't blink). The seclusion was refreshing for we urban dwellers. read more

This is a beautiful property that is located within (long) walking distance to Volcanoes National Park. We opted for Cottage 44, which is a really cute craftsman built around an abandoned water catchment tank. Wonderful decor, a fireplace, jetted tub, and small kitchen area. The Queen bed was on a platform, which was a little disconcerting (we chose the detached cottage because we were traveling with our 6 month old, and didn't want to disturb the neighbors in one of the adjoining rooms in the main house), but it was a really comfortable bed. They stock your fridge with breakfast items the night before (fresh homemade bread, papaya, juice) which was all excellent. The cottage was really clean, the linens top rate. They had extra blankets for laying out on their beautiful lawn. The staff was friendly and didn't bother us at all. Check in was a breeze. It was the perfect location for a short (3 night) exploration of Hilo and Volcano areas of the Big Island. We would definitely stay here again. Note: no tv/cable, and our cell phones didn't work very well up there so make arrangements if you need to be in contact with the outside world. read more

Super close to the park and clean comfortable rooms. The staff are friendly courteous and helpful they make you feel like you are home. The warm fresh toasted coconut, banana cranberry and zucchini bread is delicious as well as the papaya and apple banana. The beds are comfortable and the rooms are clean. read more

The best place and the best experience I've ever had traveling around the globe. The cottage and the landscape around this area are the best, surrounded by all sorts of beautiful plants, healthy living giant trees, and well maintained cottages. You will definitely feel peace and joy just look around this area. We arrived late at 7ish pm. and didn't get to check in with the cottage staff, but they prepared a letter with everything we need to know and pin it on the Office gate, which makes it easy for those who arrive late but still get well informed. The garage is big enough for big cars, and the breakfast was just delicious. Everything you need are in the room, shampoo, toilet paper, towels plenty, heater, dryer, coffee, coffee brewer. The Office Manager, Alex, she is a very friendly, helpful, generous, and informative lady. I was so lucky to have her help me contact roadside assistance when my car broke. Thank you Alex! The gift shop in the Office Cottage has all kinds of beautiful souvenirs and great clothes with Hale Ohia's logo on it. I would definitely choose this cottage to stay again if I have a chance to go back and travel Hawaii again. read more

Cozy. It served its purpose. We needed a place to stay for one night so that we could visit Volcano National Park and Hale Ohia Cottages was perfect. It's 5 minutes away from the park and conveniently located next to restaurants, yet was still secluded and peaceful. It's not fancy by any means, that's why I would describe it as cozy. My bf walked in and asked where the TV was (there's no TV). The vent above the shower was loud and there's no door separating that from the bedroom. But it is what you imagine a cottage to be. Bonus is the delicious bread, fruit and juice they provide in your room for breakfast. I would recommend staying here. read more

we lived in Hilo and were looking to get away for new years last year. instead of going to one of the big resorts on the waikoloa side we opted for a quite time in volcano. we were very glade we did, as we always love the volcano area and our know residents . of all the b&bs in volcano hale ohia and kilauea lodge are tops. we stayed in cottage #44 , it was perfect ! small kitchen, bathroom, fireplace . if your from Honolulu and looking for a place that will make you feel like being in the mountains on the mainland this is it, or if you want the cool volcano air over the hot Kona coast a few days here is is will recommended. you are 1/4 mile away from all the restaurants and the park entrance. the grounds and main house are beautifully kept. read more

We absolutely loved and adored this place! We stayed in the Ihilani Cottage, which has to be about the cutest and most adorable little cottage ever! It was just perfect...comfy bed, cozy firepace, little kitchen, a reading nook...it felt completely private and special. If I ever come back to Hawaii, I'd be tempted to stay here the whole time! The breakfast was really yummy, and Mike, the proprietor, is one of the nicest and most genuine people I've ever met. On top of all this, there is Dixon, the wonderful B&B cat! We miss him and this little cottage and hope to come back soon! read more

Overall, a very pleasant and wonderful experience. We stayed 2 nights in the main bldg- Master Suite. The location to the park was super convenient. We entered and exited the park several times just to go back to our room to relax. Since it was so close, it wasn't a hassle. The room was very clean and comfortable. We did have to check in with work so having a desk and wi-fi access was nice. We could hear the other guests that were staying adjacent to our room but it wasn't too bad and they went to bed quickly after we did. My only complaint is the simple breakfast (cofee, juice, small loaf of banana bread, fruit) is served in the room and it's a bit cramp. I guess I'd prefer to sit out in the dining area and have some room to spread out vs. having to put the coffee maker on the floor to make coffee and juggling dishes in the room. Dixon the house cat was so sweet and made us feel like we were home w/ our cats. read more
