Billed as a huge antique mall with 7 miles (not quite). Part of a lager Volo complex that offers many things for families from dinosaurs to titanic exhibits. The antique part runs along side of the main attractions. There are many small booths that run through 4 buildings. Lots to look through. The one building is a maze over several floors including a barn attic. They are connected by a covered walkway. I wouldn't think they are handicapped accessible. I found some albums with decent prices. I wouldn't make it a destination, but I'd stop if I was in the area. read more

My wife and I came here for a day of antiquing (one of our hobbies) and we were pleasantly surprised by both the size and selection of things for sale. The antique mall is part of a larger group which includes museums (great for a day trip with the kids). We only made it through the first whole building before closing, but it was well worth it. There was a large selection of vintage clothes, artwork, glassware, clothes, Mancave signage, games, vinyl albums, CDs, you name it! For the most part, the items were well curated and fairly priced. Toe only downside is some consigners packed their spaces so full that it was a little crowded (even walking single file) Overall, if looking through consignment spaces of others' collectibles/memorabilia is your thing, you will NOT be disappointed. You can easily spend an entire day covering this place. read more

I guess it ain't for me. Maybe I'm at a particular age; too old to buy random bits and baubles that'll just collect dust on my shelf, and too young to feel compelled to FILL MY SHELVES with secondhand memories. That, or I value my time, my money, and myself a healthy amount. With multiple buildings and many aisles, you WILL find something that interests you. Some form of memorabilia will resonate and align with your personal history (for me, it was video games), but the price may make you balk. That, or the chaos may disarm you. In some places, it is very organized and well tended to. In others, it feels more like a garage sale, where someone thought "don't throw that out, some fool could buy it!" There was enough here rubbing me the wrong way that a return visit isn't likely. One woman asked if we wanted her to bring our plastic figure (from the Auto Museum across the parking lot) up to the front to pay. We said "it's from the museum." She said "Oh, no, are you sure, I can take it up if you're ready to pay." Again, we said "it's from the museum." I get that there are a lot of trinkets among the antiques, but if the staff can't recognize one of the sparing few souvenirs available at the Auto Museum, they could at least work on listening. Then there was the stall with framed "patent prints." These immediately looked suspect, as one featured both the Gameboy and the N64, Nintendo consoles released years apart. So why would these appear on the same vellum paper patent? Because it's just something someone threw together to sell to dopes who don't know any better. There may be great finds here, and if you love antiquing, you could spend the whole day doing so. I'm glad time was all I spent (and far less than a day). read more

I can't believe we had no idea this place existed because it's HUGE! Like several interconnected buildings with multiple levels huge. They advertise that they have 7 miles of corridors - not sure about the veracity of that, but rest assured you'll find plenty to occupy you. We explored the main 3 buildings - I think #4 is mostly cars? Not sure. It's a maze for sure so it's very possible we missed things. That said it's like 95% smaller items vs. larger furniture pieces. Tons of collectibles - if you like vintage toys, glassware, etc you will find a lot here. It's subjective for sure - we skipped past a good amount of booths full of Bears ephemera or Hot Wheels. We personally found the "best" stuff in building 1, including a perfect vintage German Christmas smoker and an official Oktoberfest Stein from 1984 at a very good price. I thought prices were good for the most part - some booths were high, others very affordable. Thumbs up for a very friendly and helpful staff and for enforcing mask compliance. Been there to the car exhibit and the dinosaur exhibit. Impressive both. Went (and paid extra - a LOT extra) to see the Titanic exhibit. It is one room filled with cars of the day (what does that have to do with the Titanic!?) and clothes of the day (same question) and pictures/stories on the wall. There's nothing here about Titanic that one couldn't find on Wikipedia. VERY disappointed as we've seen Titanic exhibits every time they've come near us. THEY had actual pieces of the ship, actual items recovered from the ship, etc. Volo display had NOTHING. read more

Wow - where do I begin? I'll preface by saying - I am not an antiques person by far. I can't tell you the difference between Fiesta ware and carnival glass. My better half knows antiques like the back of his hand. So can you take a non antiques, antique clueless chick and toss her in the Volo Antique Mall? Yes you can. :) Prepare to spend hours - plenty of cool and fascinating stuff that kept me interested while he shopped. I also really appreciated the numerous exits with seating outside - I was able to go outside, check emails and keep up with my work flow (I own an ad agency) while he shopped. The place is huge. That is an understatement. Aisles turn into the next room and the next room into the next building. Pleasant staff, very clean washrooms. Plenty to look at every step of the way. There is also an auto museum and a dinosaur attraction (we didn't visit either but they looked cool). Nice playground area for kids. I didn't see dining but I think a speakeasy or 50's diner theme would rock that place to a whole new level. Volo Antiques - if you see my review - keep this idea in mind please :) Even a few quality hot dog stands in summer would probably see steady business :) All in all - from antique pro to clueless about antiques - we loved it and had a great time. read more

Last December, my sister and I were almost late for our sister's wedding b/c we were perusing the aisles of this huge antique mall in the middle of nowhere. You actually need a map to navigate your way around this place. There are several sections connected by walkways. Many, many vendors abound. You can probably find what you are looking for if you have all day. We didn't have time to see it all. The prices are good; much better than towns closer into the city. Thankfully, we made it to the wedding with time to spare and I love the little ceramic birds I snagged! read more

This is my absolute FAVORITE place to visit! I go at least once a year. Volo Antique Mall has numerous shops with all kinds of wonderful items! There's certainly something for everyone. From antique toys, furniture, vintage clothing, gardening items, statues, jewelry, unique items, and treasures! We love taking pics and making memories, trying on hats, or jackets for fun...or for purchase! Definitely bring some $ because you wont leave empty handed! =D I've taken friends and family members. I've even brought a picnic basket and we've ate at one of the picnic tables, we also had a quick bite at their little restaurant (though items are select, pizza, hot dogs, nacho, soda and water); however, the décor is awesome! They now have the Dinosaur Park for the kiddos and of course the Auto Museum with all kinds of neat automobiles. They've had hauntings recorded there; though I haven't seen any ghosts yet but I still search every time! The staff is amazing and helpful! This is a great day trip! I spend hours scouring every nook and cranny because it's never the same. And if you see something you "love" buy it because chances are it wont be there next time. Though I managed to find a very old stamp holder I loved, didn't buy and found again years later. I don't even know how that happened because I looked for it every year after! Perhaps it was a ghost guiding me to find it? Definitely put this place on your bucket list! I have to say, even the husband enjoys going with me. I'll have to post some pics later. If you like antiquing, this is the place for you! I spent well over an hour looking at everything from books that are well over a hundred years old, to trinkets and tools from yesteryear, and I only made it through the first building. They have, I believe, four full buildings of antiques and a classic car museum. I didn't make it to the museum so I can't report back on what that's like. I'm currently decorating a room in my house with an older industrial antique design to it, so I have been looking for old tools and items that would fit. I found an old hand drill along with a 1930's Popular Mechanics that had an advertisement for the same drill. How cool is that? read more

Woo Hoo! This place is really great! A unique combination of new and old. Sales galore. A variety of things to look at and price points to fit anyone's needs. I wandered through one of the buildings here not too long ago and realized that I need more time. You could pop in and quickly pop out like I did, but you will feel like you missed the bargains. And you probably did. I know that I should have found a way to stay longer, but my planning isn't that good and I only had an hour or so before closing time. I saw all sorts of things. Scrapbooking materials, vintage toys, movie paraphernalia, various gift baskets, dolls, decorative plates, books, jewelry, etc. The list goes on... I want to go back sooner rather than later. It was worth the drive and it was much quicker than I thought it would be. Volo really isn't as far as I thought and it was a pretty drive, so that was a plus too. They have a bit of everything and the prices are reasonable. It is free, doesn't charge parking, and is open almost every day of the year. I'm in. My feet, omg my feet! If you plan to really try to hunt down some great finds, wear sensible shoes. I'm old and should have known better, but oh well. There are 4, FOUR!, different "malls" to this place. And each mall is full of furniture, memorabilia, vintage items, antiques in all forms--just way too much to list in a review. I came here only looking for vintage drawer pulls/knobs (none found) and vintage picture frames (some interesting finds but priced too high) but came away with a Vintage PlaySkool toy circa 1970 for my son (just needs a coat of chalkboard paint) and a set of vintage pyrex in close to perfect condition (thanks to Osi V for her expert eye and Pyrex knowledge). There was a lot more I wanted but the prices were more than i wanted to spend. There are tons of vendors that have their products for sale here and they set the prices. So if you see one item and it's priced too high, you might find the same item in a different area/different mall for a lower price. But then, do you risk someone else picking up the original item? Ahhh, treasure hunting at its finest. The last mall we visited was more like a flea market. And beware the mall that is above the vintage car museum (it smelled like rubber fumes). All staff I interacted with were super friendly and fun to talk to. But all in all, it was a great time visiting. There is a snack bar (we didn't visit) and soda machines. My tip: Have breakfast/brunch at Brunch Cafe (about 10 minutes away) beforehand and then stop at Copper Fiddle Distillery (thanks to Erick A for the suggestion) afterward for some post shopping drinks! read more

This is my favorite place to escape to when I need some serious procrastination distraction. Three separate building at this location, one is much bigger than the other two, with several floors and wings. Eclectic mix of just about anything you could imagine. Prices are fair to a little overpriced, there isn't very much high end product but when they have sales off entire booths that is when you may find your deal. I don't generally buy much here unless they have sales. Bathrooms are in the middle of the first floor of the largest building, plan ahead it's a long walk. A lot of regular dealers have been in the same locations for years here and you can get in touch with them or just catch them in their booth with a little luck or planning. Not much to eat around here, go to Wauconda or Fox Lake. read more

My Husband and I go to Volo all the time. There are many missing dealers and there are not as many Antiques and it is moving to more of a flea market feel. We did buy in 3 of the buildings the problem is they don't know how to use their credit card machines and by the time they swiped my Husbands card 3-4 times the card gets declined for fraud and we have to ok the transaction then the checkout lady is condescending stating our card is no good. NO OUR CARD IS FINE YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW TO USE YOUR OWN SYSTEM!!! We did not need to be belittled and talked snotty to from someone who doesn't know how to do their job. The employees have gotten ruder over the years. If they are not customer friendly or do not like to deal with the public get a behind the scenes job. read more

The management is great - they've put together a wonderful group of vendors that there is a lot to see. A word of warning. There is a vendor, All Around Classic Toys, that specializes matchbox cars. He is NOT an honest man, and will rip you off if you do not know what you are doing. He'll sell you cheap Chinese knockoffs if he can get away with it. This antique mall consists of four buildings. Mall 1 was more like a flea market mixed with a little bit of antiques. The staff were rude women that would follow and watch us everywhere we went. This is the main reason I gave them only 3 stars. Malls 2,3, and 4(Mercantile Mall) were the best with better and friendlier staff members. While the cars at the museum are pretty damn cool and the food is ok... well... let's just say we prefer to bring our own lunch... the real attraction here for us is the Antique Mall. This mall is epic in size spanning 4 impressive buildings. There is a bit of confusion about this place and I think most of it stems from its name... Antique Mall... this paints a rather specific image, which isn't exactly accurate... allow me to clear the air, so to speak. From what I understand, according to the cashier I spoke to... each building has very specific rules as to what can be sold there. Forgive me for doing it this way, but I can't remember which building is which. One building is supposed to be specifically for Antiques. One is for items that are almost Antiques, but not quite old enough to retire. One building is for older to more modern, but discontinued items. For example a VHS tape, which is no longer in production can be sold there. The last building is more for handmade and folk-art kinds of items. That being said, people don't always follow the rules and as a customer it isn't my place to point out discrepancies... so to speak. I know that many people, myself included gripe about some of the prices and I have a good idea why, not that I'm not saying that some vendors aren't using it as an excuse to overcharge, there is a fine line and many cross it at will. The cost of rent on each "shop" be it a display cabinet to a stall, ranges from $50 - $300 something a month, add to that a 5 percent commission and having to "volunteer" 1 or 2 days a month... well... they need to recoup all that expense and still turn a little profit, after all no one does this just to break even or worse, lose money. That being said... I still manage to find some pretty amazing deals... I just have to work harder at digging them out. The only real downside is the staff... most are not exactly the most pleasant people to deal with and I suspect it has to do with "volunteering" since they act like they don't want to be there in the first place. And then there are the ones that follow everyone around making you feel like you are being stalked by a commission salesman... creepy. This Mall does require a lot of walking and negotiating stairs, thankfully there are chairs available for you to stop and catch your breath. So wear comfortable shoes and use the chairs if you need to... I do. Oh, and if you know someone who is into the paranormal in any way shape or form, but doesn't like to go "shopping" with you... just tell them the truth... one of the buildings is supposedly haunted. You can shop for treasures and they can look for ghosts, sounds like a win-win trip for one and all. read more

The Volo Antique mall is a very good place to lose a weekend or two. The malls vary from interesting collections of stuff, to a good place to find history, to booths of overpriced crap. Not that that is a bad thing, mind you.... it just makes the excursion all that more fun. Seriously, this is the place where you can find a special something. The Auto museum side is excellent. They feature quite a number of cars from Hollywood. The military museum features one of the first jet engines. Overall, I can't recommend this place enough! read more

Me, and my husband came here Sunday about 11am, and didn't leave until 3:30! Love how staff was walking around, and if they seen you carrying items they would ask "can I put those upfront for you?" Wow, what a fun place! This antique mall has multiple buildings PACKED with great finds! I came here with my younger brother and we spent hours looking through each place. We probably could have spent even longer looking if we had more time. It had everything you could think of from old coins, vintage jewelry, unique furniture to old toys, as well as everything in between. I will admit that there was one employee that seemed to be watching my brother and I like a hawk as we are much younger than many of the typical customers (teenage brother). However once we showed interest in purchasing items she warmed up to us. I understand that they were just being careful, but it was a little off putting. The whole operation closes at 5pm, and by that they start the announcements at 4:30! I was all the way up in the rafters, God only knows where, it's a maze trying to get back. I'm not complaining about that because there was SO much to look at, it was wonderful!! My biggest pet peeve is being rushed. I finally make it down to the 1st level with 15 minutes to spare! I thought I still had time to browse. NOPE! At 4:45 I was I was told I could come back to tomorrow or any day after that. Now that I think about it, I've never been kicked out of a store before closing. I think only one lady had a sour puss, the other staff I encountered were pleasant but the prices were on high side. I agree with John P. about rent and commission paid to the mall. I also want to add my thoughts on location, location, location; there's really something for everyone there mom, dad, kids. All in all, I have experienced better antique malls. There were so many interesting booths! However, there were booths that looked like no one had looked in on inventory for several months. I'm not a big time Antique seeker, but on occasion I do like checking out antique places to find a unique item which would work well in the house or as a gift. The Volo Antique Mall is actually made up of several buildings joined together and thus it is fairly large. If you were to go in every building, onto every floor and walk in every booth, this place would take you hours to go through. On a typical visit, my wife and I can easily spend two hours here. This place is kind of like a walk through time as there are many items from the late 1800's and a good deal from the 50, 60 and early 70... so in some booths it really is a blast from the past and we can be heard saying, "oh, look at that, my mom had a set just like that when I was a kid." as a rush of memories comes flooding in. I've also found that you can generally haggle the price. Maybe not directly with the owner, but on a number of occasions I've brought the item to the front desk, made the offer and they look in a book and say, "Okay." Other times they'll reach out to the owner who will then call us and we negotiate from there. So, doing this we've gotten some good deals. Personally, my preference is to come here during the winter time on one of those bitter, freezing Sundays. It does not seem to be as busy and in the summer time the upper floors can get a little stuffy. So, if your into antiques or you're looking for a unique gift or knickknack, give this place a try. read more

I can't believe that I am within driving distance and have not visited until now. There are three different "malls" that are all close by buildings. most of the booth owners were not there, but generally prices seemed pretty good and I liked that fact that I could look around without being bothered.
