I discovered the Volo Auto Museum when I was up late one night watching an old rerun of Wild Travels with Will Clinger. After watching the show, I knew this was one of the stops where I planned on taking my husband out for his birthday. Ben is a huge car enthusiast. He's spent part of his earlier years as a mechanic and I've seen him spend whole afternoons on our couch watching the Mecum auctions. Without his knowing, I bookmarked the auto museum and a few weeks later, I whisked him away making the 90 minute trek west to Volo, Illinois. Halfway through our drive, he grows pissed saying, "Where the HELL are you taking me!" Patience my child. Patience. :) Volo has a huge selection of rare vintage vehicles. It's impressive to see what's on display. I won't give it all away because it's one of those places where you'll have to see it for yourself to truly appreciate what the museum has to offer. They have 5 separate showrooms of cars with a good number of them for sale. Other vehicles in their showrooms are simply priceless. They also have a replica display dedicated to movie cars. I was able to catch a glimpse of Christine, Mad Max, and Speed Racer! The only thing I wished they could've done was allow visitors to sit in their cars. They looked awesome on the inside! There were a lot of cars in Showroom 1 that I would've given my left ovary to sit in. Our time here was well spent. You could easily kill two hours in the museum. I'm sure during the summer the volume of visitors pick up so if you want to avoid long lines, come during the spring or fall on a weekday. There's plenty of parking in their huge lot. There's not much happening in and around the village of Volo so if you get a case of the hungries, visit their onsite restaurant called Betty's diner. It's pretty neat inside and it has a cool yet kitschy 50's diner feel. Their menu has the typical fare of hamburgers, hot dogs and fries. We didn't get a chance to eat at the diner because we ate prior to visiting. Had I known this diner existed, we would've ate here. On the weekends they open their vintage Disney Mold-a-Rama machine. It's located near the entrance. You'll have to pay $5 for a molded figurine but supposedly it's worth $15-30 on eBay? If you don't get the opportunity to visit the auto museum in person, -although you probably should- the History Channel has a series on it which is airing Spring of 2017. We had a great time here and it's definitely worth checking out. read more

We were blown away by all the amazing attractions. It's not just cars. Every time you turn a corner, there is something interesting to see. They have everything from stage coaches and cabooses to juke boxes and a merry go round! Everything was clean and directions were very well marked. It was cool on a hot day and the music blasting in each area added to the fun. Admission prices were reasonable and well worth the money. Volo is a really great attraction. read more

Everything from the entry fee to the food (which is very,very limited) costs way too much. If you are handicapped do not bother to go. We had to pay $45.00 to rent a scooter. All the aisles are way too small to get through. Every place is roped or fenced off, so that you had repeatedly to go thru main building. Which on a scooter is almost impossible. Not a good experience, sorry to have wasted my time. read more

Our son wanted to see some animatronic dinosaurs and the Volo Museum delivered. We each bought a platinum pass and enjoyed a full day of dinosaurs, and cars. Don't PURCHASE any vehicles from this company. We haven't had the vehicle 24 hours and we're stuck on the freeway! I recently purchased a vehicle for my husband! They don't do as they promise! I purchased a 1972 Buick Skykark vehicle from this dealership, excited to receive the vehicle and give it my husband because he's been sick with kidney disease! This was suppose to be a joyous surprise. Once the vehicle was purchased, it took almost a month for the vehicle to be sent to us in California. I asked them numerous of times what was the delay , with the lack of response , they stated it was the AC and that a part needed to be replaced. I complained and finally spoke with General manager and my sales rep Erik , the information. That I received was they were down in staff and and unfortunately that was the reasoning of the delay. When I spoke to the manger Brenda , she made it seem as if they were doing us a favor, by replacing the part , but we ran the AC and the part was never Replaced. We received our vehicle yesterday , and today we are on the side of the freeway because a vehicle is now broke down. Was it really the AC that was broke or was it more! When we received the service report, it showed everything was clear. We trusted this company to provide us with a running old school that my husband could enjoy and be excited about and experience has been the worse experience ever. And to top it off they didn't even fill the car up with gas. Please I promise you don't purchase anything from this company. read more

This is a great place to visit and bring kids to. Lots to see and fun for the whole family'.

My husband and I checked out this museum up in Volo. The admission price is about $14 per person, and they have a variety of collections, including: Hollywood, Bizarre, Vintage, Military, Cars of the Stars, and the Duesenberg. I especially loved the Ghostbusters Ecto 1 (!!!), the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Van, the Flinstones car, Pee Wee's Bicycle, the Scooby Doo Mystery Machine van, The Cat in the Hat, Herbie's bug car, the Delorean from Back to the Future, and all the different Batmobiles. So much beautiful cars to see and things to do with the kids! Went on spring break Thursday and wasn't to packed.

I was okay with the $20 admission fee. The place is clean and well maintained and I understand the value in the auto museum. However, the prices at the on-site restaurant are ridiculous: 2 hot dogs, tiny bag of chips and one soda was $25. I call that price gauging. I can't imagine a family of 4 paying almost $100 to go the Volo museum. I'd pass on this weekend activity. read more

Came back here for the second time since July and really enjoyed the afternoon. I brought my Dad this time (he lives out of state) to admire all of the awesome inventory Volo has to offer. I was happy to investigate the Military Museum during this trip, as well as the Pre-1950s automobiles building. We spent over 3 hours here and easily could have spent longer. It's a great way to spend the afternoon, especially on those cold, blustery days in Illinois. I was slightly bummed they didn't have "The Tumbler" from the Dark Knight movie on display yet, but maybe in 2017? We'll be back! read more

Worst Customer Service Ever!!! especially from the owner wife Brenda Grams! First of all we purchased our classic car from them on December and we didnt get it until February because their delivery people they use don't have a driver or cant find a driver that will deliver to California even then we were understanding about it. We paid for delivery and we waited for almost 2 months. Second our finance bank is asking for a proof of insurance from Volo or the delivery company they used as per our finance contract. When I called and spoke with Brenda Grams and told her the situation she was very rude and told me she never heard of a financial bank asking for this and that they are not responsible for it and will not give us their proof of insurance because she said we are responsible for our own insurance since we purchased it even if the car still in their lot. I had advised her that I was trying to purchased an insurance but Mercury/American Collector wont let me until I have possession of the car. Her respond after me telling her this "Hmm never heard of that and we have a bunch of clients in California. Must be a CHEAP INSURANCE . I find it so rude for her to say that when she didnt even know what insurance I was going through and when I told her its American Collectors Insurance she said Oh! I felt she was very rude and i felt offended. She could've just explained the whole process it was so unnecessary to assumed and put me down. I love how when we were purchasing the car she was so nice and now as soon as she got rid of the car and got her money she can careless and very rude. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER! Im still so speechless of how the owner wife will respond to this! One last thing technically they are still the owner till I got the car because we didnt even get the title till it was delivered and was transferred to us. Get your facts straight Brenda Grams! Very unique museum with more cars than you are probably expecting and a lot of other things too! There is a mixture of classic, restored cars (for purchase, none the less), military vehicles, movie/TV/otherwise famous cars, cars once owned by famous people, and all variety of other kinds of vehicles from motorcycles to snowmobiles to trains to RVs. It's really kind of incredible to see the variety and volume, even if you aren't really a car person. If you are an adult and have an interest in cars, you could spend hours here poring over all the details. For me, my husband and I went with our 5 and 7 yr old boys and we breezed through in under two hours due to their attention span. But it was still a worthwhile trip for the price, with an online coupon. We all really enjoyed it and had a good time. There are small portions of outside walking between buildings so it wouldn't be the best option on a truly wet and rainy day but even on the cool, misty day we went it wasn't bad at all. I will warn you the smell of turtle wax or whatever is SUPER strong. Holy Cow! You will long for the short walks between buildings to get some fresh air. It's intense. Also, they do have restored arcade and ride-on machines that "work" although the one we tried took my money but did not play, so that was a disappointment. Bring your quarters if you dare. Nice place to see in person. I love classic cars; I've always wanted one. The prices of some of the ones for sale are more reasonable than I thought so that may be a reality one day. Anyways, there are a lot of very nice classic cars here and other classic motorized vehicles like scooters, bikes and boats. They even got a lot of the movie and TV show cars here so it's a trip down memory lane. This is a place where if you've never been before, it's worth a visit. read more

My family and I really enjoy coming here. I'm not really a "car" person but I've never been bored here. Tip: buy the Groupon with an additional coupon on top of that to really save some money. This museum is best enjoyed over many hours. We typically spend two or three hours here. There's so many displays and rooms. They even have a section dedicated to the military, however it is scary for young children due to the loud gunfire and sirens they play when you first walk in. Through the museum, you get to see many different cars, like those used in films. You'll see famed vehicles like Christine, the DeLorean, and Drag-u-La. Most are for display only but some you can get into, like Michael Andretti's race car and the Flintstones Flintmobile. Some displays and cars have music or a scene attached to them. There is also a room filled with Disney displays. In that room is a collection of some of the first coin-operated kiddie rides. Interestingly, they decided to put a Jurassic Park Jeep right at the entrance, complete with animatronic dinosaur and loud roaring and stomping. You can also see old snow mobiles, campers, an 1895 caboose, and some of the first cabins and motor homes. There are parks for kids to play on outside when the weather is nice. There is also a Disney-themed shuttle bus that tours the grounds, also when the weather is nice. They also buy and sell automobiles. Lots of history and nostalgia to be found here. Overall a cool place, awesome cars and history. My only gripe was that when we were done, my lady and I were following the provided map to find our way out as it was our first time and we got a little confused as to where to go (probably our fault). But what wasn't our fault was that there were supposed to be ropes in place to prevent that from happening. Due to somebody not properly doing their job, we were confronted by one of the employees as if we did wrong. This left my lady and myself quite uncomfortable. I understand he was just doing his job, but we didn't like how he put the blame on us. The rope was placed AFTER the fact (we saw him do it...) he confronted us but didn't let us correct our mistake by going back over the rope he had just placed. And then he proceeded to tell us to continue going where we weren't supposed to be at, to go over a different rope. This made NO sense to us! I understand that nobody's perfect and people do make mistakes, and all is forgiven on our ends. My complaint/gripe comes from a place of empathy and respect for this museum and I felt it needed to be acknowledged. read more

We had an awesome time here today! There's so much to do and see- little boy ( and probably grown man) heaven! From dinosaurs to cars , to trucks ,trains, planes, boats- anything on wheels! We were glad there was food and treats available and a fun playground for kids to get their energy out. However I was pushing a double stroller with a 3 year old and one year old and my best friend had a 3 year old in her stroller and NONE of the doors were automatic even though there was a button to push. It was very frustrating and made it very difficult going in and out of buildings and show rooms- we were grateful there was two of us to help hold the door open for each other but it was extremely hard to maneuver and the doors practically slammed in our kids faces. It seems like children would be a main demographic and it's mind boggling that it was not easily accessible for strollers and more importantly for those in wheel chairs. We will definitely come again but hoping the doors work this time read more

The Volo Auto Museum is now a $15 admission ticket. The museum is spread across several buildings very full of cars, snowmobiles, military displays, outboards, jukeboxes and more. I'd guess about four hours to really see everything. I brought a camera and went kind of slow. Most of the display sale vehicles are crammed together very close to each other. It can be tough to get the shots you want. I didn't realize ahead of time that Volo is not so much a museum but a dealer of of these collector cars. Most of the cars there are for sale. In addition to the muscle cars and hot rods there are plenty of other displays. Volo Auto Museum is definitely A-OK. read more

Enjoyed our day there on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Nice mix of cars, family also liked the antique stalls. The snacks were ok as well. People were very nice. I tried not to drool on the cars that I liked, I would love to buy some of them. If you plan to buy though, plan on doing a lot of negotiation, they had all the cars priced TOO DAMN HIGH. But they were fun to look at. The one thing I would not recommend spending any money on is the $2 ticket for the horror and pain, crime part of the museum. Had about 2 minutes worth of interest, was not worth the extra couple bucks to walk through. Have to commend this family owned, multi-generational business, very happy to see a place like this still around in our corporate run world. What the what? Holy crap, it was the best day...ever! I don't remember having such an amazing fun time with my kiddos than today. If you like cars, have kids who like cars, or want to disappear into a place that will make you wonder what the...what...the entire time, get to the Volo Auto Museum. Just do it. I had absolutely no idea that this place existed. I mean, I literally thought it was a tiny building or something. Nope, it is 35 acres with five buildings filled with cars, scooters, motorized bikes...anything you can think of with a motor. The oldest and first snowmobile, etc. From vintage pre-war autos, to cars from Hollywood movies, you will no doubt be guaranteed to walk around like I did with my mouth wide open in awe of it all. From a showroom of chandeliers and Duesenberg autos, to the car from Back To The Future, Beverly Hillbillies, to the Cat In The Hat, to Batman, The movie Christine, and just so many more movies like Ghostbusters, etc. Think of a movie with a memorable car in it, and they might just have it. The WWII military museum section with war vehicles was a bit too creepy for me, but I couldn't get enough of the random vintage station wagons--perfect for a kooky mom like me. Plopped in the middle of nowhere, you'll discover this completely bizarre and random Hollywood movie stop/auto show/antique show. It's too much to explain in a review, but it's 100% worth the drive and the price. Also, on their website they have a 1/2 price off admission coupon. Go...go...go! read more

I purchased a 1986 Johnson Phantom with 28k miles from Volo and had it shipped to California. I had assumed as a reputable seller and AUTO MUSEUM they would inspect or take care of minor things. The car I received had no working air conditioner (I was never informed of this - didn't realize I would have to ask if anything was broken - I assumed they would list that), a damaged radiator, a stuck thermostat that was damaged upon opening (the thermostat housing lines), a non-functional radio, a fan that makes tons of noise, non-functioning temperature gauge, questionable transmission. Sure, the car looks great (though the interior was MUCH nicer in their pictures), but I feel scammed. I wouldn't buy another car from them. I expected more from them than a snake-oil, fly-by-night used car salesman experience. Have a mechanic look at any vehicle they have INSIDE AND OUT. I expected more from this shop based on reputation but would never, ever purchase another vehicle from them. There were also some shipping issues that were clearly their fault and they actually snapped at me over the phone when I had nothing to do with it. read more

This place made for a fun trip with my family. I didn't give it 5 stars for a couple reasons. Mainly the price gouging. It was $65 for a 2 adults 2 kids to do the main museum. All the arcade ride ons were $1ea for tokens. The park you have to walk your kids by to get in/out is part of the Jurassic tour and extra$$$ so I of course left with a crying 6 year old who didn't understand why he couldn't climb on the equipment right in front of him even though he'd behaved throughout the long museum tour ( because mom isn't forking up $16/ea to go to a park). read more
