The "Red Shirt" volunteers put in a great deal of care and effort and it shows. On Independence Day, I attended the parade and it is THE BEST parade that I have ever seen. The focus is on fun with a capital F. Before the band on the first night I saw them present scholarships. What a great way to give back to the community! Beyond the regular carnival activities are some very special and unique activities that make Frontier Days special. Among them are bingo, pony rides, pie eating contest, rib eating contest, cake decorating, dog frisbee, corn hole, water fights, soccer tournament, volleyball tournament, spikeball tournament, etc. The family fun stage is filled with lots of amazing entertainment such as the pet parade, magicians, reptile show, dancers, clowns, police demonstrations, and music acts. The best part of the festival for me is the Citizens with Disabilities day. This is a day where citizens with disabilities and their families can ride in the carnival without the big crowds and with accessibility considerations. This is followed by a great lunch and entertainment for the families. Frontier days is definitely a magical way to spend the Fourth of July weekend!

The 52,000 sq. ft Tudor style home has so many unique musical, one of a kind and ornate items that you really have to see to believe! We went on the tour yesterday and it was really enjoyable. They have so many historical Calliope's from Europe and US on the premises. Also many other items including Tiffany lamps, steam trains/engines, a perfume museum and a restored carousel in its own building that is really something to see! It's truly a fascinating tour and very tastefully done. They only collected the very best top of the line pieces for the collection. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. Pictures and reviews really don't do this place justice. You need to go and see everything for yourself! It's definitely worth it and you'll leave feeling dazzled!

Part baseball, part dance, part gymnastics. I went to the Wintrust stadium website to check if there was anything to know before the game. For boomers games, there is no charge for parking. However, we didn't know until we pulled up for our game it cost $20. They only inspect larger bags. Players wander the stadium to interact with fans. Merch and concessions are reasonable prices. They have a large selection of craft beer. Bathrooms were spacious, but I felt the women's bathroom smelled. The crowd was very pleasant and respectful.

This art festival takes place in Schaumburg on the grounds of the Al Larson Prairie Center for the…read moreArts. It's a festival that has vendors ranging from the more arts and crafts end of the spectrum to fine art. There were lots of different categories of art represented, including photography, painting, jewelry, and then of course different forms within each category of art such as oil, paintings, watercolor, etc. There were crafts, including handmade hats, knit and felted items and other textiles and fiber art. There were folks selling soaps, a booth was selling plants and moss art, and a couple booths selling fudge and another selling cookies and baked goods. They had quite a few food trucks as well, at least half a dozen of different types, so a little bit of something for everybody. It was pretty extensive. At first glance when you come through the main entrance, it seems it's just a few booths that they have use their parking lot to host, but it goes all the way towards the back of the building down by the little pond and the grassy area. There were well over 100 artists showcasing their works here. They had a local blacksmith here with an outdoor forge both selling and demoing, and per their booth they also host classes if you are interested in learning how to forge metal here in the suburbs. Inside the art center building, they had cocktails and wine and alcoholic beverages. I believe they also had children's activities, but I'm not sure where those may have been. They had at least two spots with musicians, as we passed by someone playing a steel drum and then in another area saw someone playing the hammered dulcimer as well. Parking--at least this year--was directly across the street at the school district building, though it's possible that's not typical (I thought I saw some reference to construction changing the parking situation). There were Schaumburg police officers directing traffic to allow people to safely cross the road at various intervals. We went early to avoid crowds and to have the easiest time with parking and were successful on both counts, and were here about an hour. I really liked that this art fair is a bit more of a home grown fair and not one of the ones from local production company, since I see some of the same artists at those ones and I like that none of the artists I saw today were familiar.

The stage can be rented out by local theater companies to be used for their production. Outside of the building is a bandshell where concerts are help during the summer. One the day that my husband and I were there, there were people taking wedding pictures and quincenera pictures on the grounds in front of the pond that is there. There are also sculptures and art on the ground to be seen and take pictures of. I highly recommend the Al Larson Prairie Center for the Arts.

A few weeks ago, I was walking through the neighborhood and noticed the Roselle Historical Museum,…read moreacross the street from the village hall and police station. I almost missed it since it looks like every other house on the street, with the exception of the sign out front. I noted the hours (only open on Sunday afternoons from 2p-4p) and made a point to come here the next free Sunday afternoon my husband and I had -- which was a week ago. We anticipated being there for about twenty minutes, not an hour and a half! The museum is actually two houses -- the Sumner House and the Richter House. The smaller one in the back looked closed so we walked up a path to the back door of the larger house and were greeted by a man that seemed very happy to see us. He offered to unlock the small house and give us a tour. I love walking through older houses, so I was excited about this. The small house, which belonged to the Richter family, is pleasantly small with a parlor, sunny kitchen, pantry, and a second floor with two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a children's play area. It reminded me of my grandmother's house (the smell of... mothballs? age? what is it?). Family photos and relics were everywhere. The children's play area was littered with many vintage toys and dolls, almost giving off a creepy aura. I could just imagine a doll's head turning around slowly or the scooter rolling across the floor on its own. ANYWAY. The man gave us a very informative tour with different stories and random bits of information. An interesting tidbit about the Richter house: it was built in 1878 and relocated to the museum campus in 1996. Mrs. Richter remained in her home, even after its relocation, until her death in November 1999, when she was 105 years of age. With Mrs. Richter's blessing, the house was restored to represent a Roselle working man's home during the 1920s. Approximately 85 percent of the artifacts in the house belonged to Mrs. Richter. Cool, huh? (And a little bit creepy?) After the man locked up the doors, we headed back to the Sumner House and proceeded to explore on our own. The house, which belonged to several families over the years, was eventually turned into a historical museum. It has various exhibits of different businesses and organizations from every decade since Roselle was established. Downstairs, there is a general store, a barber shop, a room devoted to a 1950's diner that was popular in Roselle but doesn't exist anymore (sad!), a HUGE map of Roselle decorated with old photos of different sites, and a timeline room, which has artifacts, news, and information from Roselle as time progressed. Upstairs, each little room was devoted to different things: farms, military, boy scouts & girl scouts, police & fire departments, and schools & churches. All the rooms had many pictures and artifacts with so much information! If you live in town, you need to make this place a Sunday afternoon destination. You'll leave with a different view of this town and a nostalgia for things that don't exist anymore. Oh, and watch out for the mannequins! They pop up everywhere. Who knew that Roselle had so much history!? Now I do.

It's not very big, but they've packed a bunch of information and displays in. Dale asked if we wanted to wander about ourselves or have a guided tour and we chose guided tour. Between Dale and James I don't think there's anything in the museum they can't tell you about. Everything you ever wanted to know about the history of fighting fires in Elgin. The displays are all very well done and everything is very well taken care of. If you're in the area and looking for an interesting place to spend an hour or two definitely stop by the Fire Barn Museum. If you're not in the area but interested in fire fighting the trip will be worth it.

I'd recommend parking at the covered lot vs paying if you get there early enough to find spots Admission: there is a $5 admission fee this year (2023), which is new compared to previous years. I'd recommend purchasing it online so you can avoid any extra lines. Washrooms: They don't have nice indoor bathrooms here but do have porter potties available throughout the Ribfest. They also have water and soap outside of the porter potty to wash your hands. Food: Blazin Bronco BBQ - not recommended 3 Bone Sampler: the ribs tasted okay and was cold, not a favorite and the ribs weren't fully off the bone. Coleslaw: the worst coleslaw I've had...not sure if it went bad or something but definitely didn't taste right. Wouldn't recommend. -- Armadillo's BBQ - it's okay 1/3 slab: the ribs were cooked more off the bone but not as warm but off the bone Baked beans: tasty and came out hot -- Texas Outlaw BBQ - good 1/4 rack ($15) - good amount of ribs for sharing..ribs came out warm Coleslaw ($3) - It tasted like normal coleslaw, nothing too special but refreshing to eating with ribs. Not sure if I'll be back next year. It was underwhelming this year and seemed like there were less vendors maybe?
