I had my doubts, but I highly recommend visiting. Their altars are very interesting, and the readings they offer are not just a throw-away tourist attraction. My friend and I decided to book $45 30-minute readings (we had to choose a day 3 days out because they book up, but you can call in advance of your trip to reserve your slot). I wasn't sure what to expect, but the voodoo priest was a great guy. He talked to us like real people, coached us the way a therapist does, and there were some tears. It really just felt like talking to a good friend who wants the best for you. He read tarot cards and spent the full time with us. Please tip them; this is their livelihood, and are much cheaper than others in New Orleans. One other thing to mention is that the appointment right before ours was actually a phone call appointment. Our ghost tour ended at Voodoo Authentica where we each got a chance to wander and purchase things as well. Luckily my guide warned me to be careful about what I was grabbing/touching since many of the items were actually a part of a shrine and not for sale. HIGHLY recommend getting the "Attract a Mate" voodoo potion. I am not kidding men were coming out of the woodwork a month into me wearing the love potion religiously. Authentica was our favorite Voodoo/witchery shop that we visited during our stay in New Orleans. They had ingredients that you could purchase that none of the other shops we visited had. You can tell that the shop is very popular because when we visited, it was pretty crowded, and rightfully so. The shop had 3 rooms, the first room where you enter had a few things such as candles, books, pendulums, etc. The room immediately to the left had a space for readings, shelves of jarred ingredients, and more. The back room I thought was the most interesting because they had all kinds of different dolls, altars, and other unique items with a little bit of a description. A lot of interesting artifacts in the store & I appreciate how they trace voodoo back to its African origins but a little more information on the items they're selling would have been nice. They have these really helpful signs around the store demystifying some of their more popular items (like voodoo dolls) but I wish they had something like this for all of their items. This review is from February 2017 I heard about this location during my tour guide while i was in NOLA last month, however when i went into it not what i was expecting. This is located in the French Quarter and a lot of tours take place around there I didnt do a reading however i did look around. There was a lot of people walking around and looking at stuff which made it hard to take your time and browse. Someone was having a reading done because the curtains were pulled and they had a sign up about it. Jamie W. and I never did take that cemetery tour we heard so much about when we were in New Orleans earlier this month, but we wanted a bit of exposure to the voodoo culture that appears alive and well in the French Quarter....at least for ignorant tourists like me. We saw the voodoo museum on the next block, but this one spoke to us a bit more. You enter a very thin doorway (our first punishment, I guess) and come upon a dark, heavily stocked store full of gris-gris bags and voodoo dolls of all shapes and sizes. The juju guardian dolls are the freakiest ones (see photos). I was kinda bummed to find out it's been a myth to stick pins in a voodoo doll and expect to cause pain for whomever the doll is supposed to represent. I immediately canceled my bulk order just after I finished itemizing my inventory of everyone I hated in high school. It was payback for unwanted Facebook invitations. But I did find out that to stop a voodoo spell being placed upon you, you need to acquire some bristles from a pig cooked at a voodoo ritual, tie the bristles into a bundle and carry them on you at all times. Had I known. Fun store. It's definitely worth a browse as you're strolling the quarter. read more

Located in The French Quarter. I came in here with my husband after we finished our Voodoo walking tour. Now I wouldn't normally walk into a place like this, but our tour guide did invite everyone to come in if they wanted to. So we thought it would be interesting to take a look at the different alters made to each of the Voodoo gods after learning about them. One thing that really was interesting about learning about Voodoo on our walking tour (Voodoo is the religion and Hoodoo is magic where potions is used) was that the gods are very similar to the Catholic saints. During the time of slavery, especially in NOLA, it was important that slaves converted to Catholicism. Being that those from Africa being brought over here were forced to change their religion (or would suffer very harsh consequences), they were rather sneaky and clever in hiding their dedication to preserve their religion by finding key differences in the Catholic saints. So in Voodoo Authentica, in the back room, you can see all of the alters dedicated to the many voodoo gods. And in each little area, you can also read about which saint that god is most similar to. From what we learned on our walking tour, aromatherapy is one way to help with certain ailments/ anxiety, etc. It was nice to smell the different herbs/ dried flowers while looking around the back room. I am rather surprised that this store is friendly for the most part. I did not feel awkward and am glad we ended up coming in here after our walking tour. read more

Great atmosphere. This little shop/ cultural center/ museum was awesome. The guy at the front answered all my annoying questions. He was very knowledgeable. He said he was a Voodoo priest and all the gris gris there were authentic because voodoo priests made them. He didn't try to sell anything to me, and seemed to answer things honestly to his knowledge/ beliefs. They have a lot of interesting displays from dolls to shrines and artwork. Voodoo Authentica is a lovely shop located on the 600 block of Dumaine St. in the french quarter. I make it a point to visit the shop every time I am in town. Last year I stopped in to pick up a few of my favorite items. Murray & Lanman Florida water and Triloka inscese. Egyptian Musk being my favorite. You will also find an assortment of other items that may interest you as well. From traditional Voodoo dolls, candles, potions, books or any spiritual products you may need. There are beautiful Haitian tapestries and African art pieces for sale as well. If you are interested in a Tour or Tarot reading this is the place for you. A variety of altars are set up in areas of the shop to honor each deity or what are know as Loas in the Voodoo religion. If you have an interest in learning more about the Voodoo religion, this is the perfect place to stop in. The Voodoo religion is often misunderstood. The practitioners at the shop will be happy to educate anyone who is truly interested in learning more about Voodoo. If the owner Mambo Brandi is in the shop, make sure to stop and chat with her. Went in there and saw a lot of cool and interesting things...lots of voodoo dolls to choose for various reasons and function. The staff was nice and allowed you to walk and take pictures. It's not like other establishments where people follow you around. The place has a steady line of people come in.
