Pre parade New Orleans is a zoo. Tourists roam around with frozen grenades like it's a competitive sport, neon sugar and grain alcohol sloshing through the streets. The Apothecary was the cure. We grabbed seats mid bar and before we even finished settling in, there were waters waiting on the bar. That simple move already separated this place from the chaos outside. It's hospitality in its cleanest form: welcome in, take a breath, we got you. Inside is low light and old time apothecary mood, menus like a spellbook, but it's not gimmicky. The bartenders move like they've done the reps. Calm. Precise. No frantic showboating, no syrupy cover ups, no sloppy pours even with the parade energy banging on the door. We ordered two and they were both dead on. Alchemist Elixir: pea flower gin, elderflower liqueur, fresh lemon. It shows up pale violet with an orchid on the rim and yes it's pretty, but it's also disciplined. Floral without tasting like perfume. Bright without being sour. A drink that makes you slow down. Plus a magic chemists surprise. Corpse Reviver #2: local gin, Lillet Blanc, Grand Marnier, absinthe, fresh lemon. Cold, crisp, citrus first, then the herbal edge and just enough absinthe to remind you what city you're in. Served in a textured coupe with a cherry skewer, details handled like they actually matter. It was fairly early and it appeared we were the only table- we ordered a charcuterie board because it came in a birdcage- these are things you must do :) however, it took a very long time to come out; longer than 15-20 minutes. The vibes here are great, and the staff was friendly. I really wanted to love this place, but unfortunately it fell short. The restaurant was pretty empty, and we were seated directly next to the air conditioning, so we were freezing halfway through our meal. The oysters were very large, so we didn't end up finishing them. I did enjoy the Pickled Egg Duo, and the goat cheese dip was tasty, though it only came with four pieces of pita bread. We are back in NOLA for a long weekend. The Vampire Apothecary was our first dinner stop. Dark, gothic, brick walls. Great spot. We started with oysters on the half shell for me. Can't go wrong there. Wife got the roasted bone marrow. That was accompanied by steak tartare, caviar and a vinaigrette. That was really good, but could've used another crostini with it. Entrees were the tea brined chicken thighs with mushrooms and sweet potato mash. So very tasty! I got the boudin stuffed quail. Perfectly cooked. And on a quail, that's hard to do! Both meals were served hot, too! Now, there was a hiccup. Our entrees were sent to the wrong table. We did not ask for what happened next. Two newly made entrees. The Apothecary is a really fun place to visit in NOLA. They match the them to the bar and drink menu and our whole party had a good time. One odd thing was when we came in, the first person to approach us was a tarot reader. This is something new to NOLA--they are on almost every corner and even here. We were not interested, but I guess could be fun for others. We started with drinks. They have a good set of beers on draft, I had something called Purple Haze which was good. My nephew got something called a "blood bag" that came in an actual blood bag. Kind of gimmicky, but he really enjoyed it. The food was good as well. We had a charcuterie board. This came in a tower and had some nice cheeses and meats. We also had the brie that was very good. Then the popcorn was nice as well. A bloody good time! So the wife and I were walking down St. Peter and we saw a sign out in front of this non-descript little restaurant that read "Happy hour 4 - 7 oysters 12 dollars a dozen." Holy smokes I love oysters and that deal is too good to pass up so we turned around and went in for a bite. First let's talk about the ambience. This place is vampire themed. It's not really my thing but they do it pretty well. I could totally see myself coming back here in my best Lestat outfit and taking it all in. They had some tarot readers in house which is pretty neat if you're into that kinda thing and overall I gotta say it did get me into the mindset. I was really vibing with it. The food was pretty good. The oysters were fine, my sazerac was tasty, but the star of the show was the hazelnut dome. It was fabulous! It was kind of a flourless chocolate cake with a hazelnut filling and a dark chocolate shell with caramel sauce. If you like chocolate I definitely think you should try it out. All of the food and drink items have themed names and they were pretty good. Our server was super nice and she recommended the hazelnut dome to us and it was hit. In fact, everyone was super nice, alluring, pleasant, maybe a little too pleasant. Why does the sun seem so bright today? One of the coolest themed restaurants I've ever been to, Vampire Apothecary brought their theme to life. The atmosphere was unmatched, hard to describe but definitely unique and one I loved the experience. The food and drinks were also a big hit. I had the chicken thighs, which was very juicy, flavorful and well cooked. A great plate of food that I would highly recommend ordering. The drinks were also very strong and packed a strong punch, good notes for someone who wants to get the most out of their drinks. Overall, this was a great bar to visit. The Apothecary is one of the amazing bars to check out in the French Quarter that has wickedly good craft cocktails and cool vampire vibes. Located in St. Peter about half a block of Bourbon Street, is an excellent cocktail bar with a tarot card reader and a great food menu if you are looking to eat. The interior has a very aged decor that is not quite goth but definitely elicit certain elements a la Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles. It has certain haunted rustic charm while music by Depeche Mode, Bauhaus, and other bands contribute to the energy. Cocktail-wise, they deliver a bastion of exquisite versions of the Corpse Reviver #2, the Alchemist Elixir, Barber Surgeon's Penicillin, Vampire Sazerac, and servings of the Atelier Vie absinthe. Probably my favorite at the bar is the Corpse Reviver #2 with McQueen and the Violet Fog gin, Grand Marnier, Atelier Vie Absinthe, and fresh lemon juice. The spicy oyster shooter is also excellent with New Orleans Finest Bloody Mary Mix, Vampyre Vodka, and (you guessed it) a fresh oyster. Also the Alchemist Elixir is quite magical especially when the bartender adds the Elderflower liqueur to the peaflower-infused Euphorisine local gin and fresh lime juice mixture, changing the color to purple. The vibes are always grand at the Apothecary. A bar that always serves as a lovely hangout if you enjoy strong cocktails. read more

I was obsessing over the vibes of this establishment. Very witchy in my opinion and for somebody who grew up loving Practical Magic, I'm all for this. We were lucky enough to get a spot at the bar and ordered some cocktails and was in desperate need of carbs. The menu has pretty decent variety of food options. I saw the option of grilled cheese with truffle and that won me over instantly. My excitement over this meal was a little too high, but considering that I spent the entire day drinking...Can you really blame me? Crazy enough, we got the disappointed news from the bartender that the cook is unable to make it due to the ingredients being unavailable. I'm still waiting for somebody to please explain to me how the cook at the back was not able to make a grilled cheese sandwich. The bartender was definitely flabbergasted and could not explain to us either and look terrified to even have to go back and find that answer out directly from the cook. How do you run out of bread and cheese? So we ended up ordering the Cuban sandwich. It was OK but was still very disappointed about the grilled cheese sandwich. I love the fact that the side was hummus, which I'm not upset about. You could tell it was definitely from a container and not homemade. When we got the bill which I didn't notice until my husband pointed out, that the grilled cheese sandwich was not removed. So that was a double hitter of not getting a grilled cheese sandwich and then getting charged for it. We did have it removed from our bill, which should've been done before receiving the actual bill. The bar is packed with different types of alcohol and they have specialty drinks that fit the theme of this vampire Mecca. The dining area is just as delightful, packed with ambience. This was one of the spots affiliated with the vampire themed restuarants/bars in the area. I stopped in to try their oyster happy hour. However, I didn't realize that the deals were applicable to only raw oysters (which aren't my jam). Still, I got a fanastic cocktail and enjoyed the space! I went with the corpse reviver #2, which was strong and had just a hint of citrus. The ingredients were- Hangover Cure-McQueen and the Violet Fog gin, Grand Marnier, Atelier Vie Absinthe, fresh lemon juice. Oddly, I was most impressed with the glassware. The weight (heavy) and design of the cup ticked all the sensory boxes! The detractors on the visit were that we were seated at a table that had a bookshelf jutting out into my space, which made almost impossible to sit opposite my dining companion. Also, the space was pretty small and we were seated close to a large group who were dominating the space, so we didn't decide to linger very long. This space does have the viral blood bag drinks (as do all the other vampire-themed New Orleans bars). So, def worth checking it out for that or to simply enjoy a lovely craft cocktail! read more

The outside of this place is unassuming. Run down even. But inside is beautiful. My little black heart squeed at the vampire tarot reader (that we saw the next night at the speakeasy.) I got the absinthe, they have 3 kinds depending on how much you like the taste of black licorice. Green (normal, strong), red (hibiscuss, medium), and blue (elderberry and peaflower, weakest). It was okay. My wife enjoyed her lavendar lemonade. I got the chicken thighs. I could taste the tea in them, but they were just okay. The mushrooms that they came with were amazing and well seasoned and the sweet potatoes were good too. My wife loved her short rib sandwich. Let me wax a little more on the atmoshere because upstairs there is a lounge with a vampire side and a witchy side, it's small and cozy, but a great place to hang for a group of 4 or less. We also got a pass for the Potions vampire speakeasy. OH! And the music. If you love The Cramps, Siouxie and the banshees, Sisters of Mercy, or The Cure, then you'll love the plalist here. This place was very cute, but struggled with the execution of service. It was understandably busy on a Saturday. I sat at the bar for a while but couldn't place an order and decided to come back later. The staff was very kind but it just didn't seem like there were enough. even when we came back later in the afternoon and were seated in the courtyard with nobody else, the service was excruciatingly slow. If you want to go here, I'd plan for 2 hours for anything and maybe 2 and a half to 3 if everyone wants to order food and drinks. And it wasn't because they were trying to make them all come out at once... they trickled in fairly randomly. The drinks were hit or miss and so was the food. The blood bags were cute and everyone thought they were tasty. One of the mocktails ordered was very very good. My drink was decent. A couple of our drinks were downright gross and almost undrinkable. The food on the menu was pretty pricey but decent. Some kind of grilled cheese with hummus was totally delicious. The bat truffles were pretty good. The blood orange sorbet was cute looking but it was too sour for any one of our party to eat more than a couple bites. This is such a cool place with a really unique atmosphere and decor. I found myself there more than once when I was only in town for three days. They have a very robust cocktail list with a variety of interesting selections. It is just off Bourbon Street to be well-located but not overly noisy. The interior has a lot of unique "dark" decor to appreciate, and there is a lovely courtyard in the back, although we usually bellied up to the bar and enjoyed chatting with the bartender. This place is a gem. Just half a block off Burbon street, it's a more sophisticated sister restaurant to the vampire Café. Walking in, they had a really nice bar, open doors yet air conditioned, and it wasn't crazy loud like lots of the other clubs and restaurants on the main drag. We had an interesting cocktail that can also just be served straight up as a refreshing berry juice for just four dollars. We then came back for the happy hour dollar oysters and that was what Rose sent but if you look at the menu, it is stunning, and there are so many amazing choices. The pork wings were delicious and taste like they have been braised for hours. The seafood nachos I would skip next time not worth it, I wanted to buy the roasted marrow bone, but they did not have any that day, which is a shame because it sounded really good. Interesting cute place to dine. Located near Pat O'Briens. We opted for a more quiet and laid back place than Pat's and this definitely met the bill. Good selection of items though getting some of ingredients omitted proved to be a challenge which was difficult for me given some of my dietary issues. Service was good and wait staff was attentive and food was good. They even had a Tarot card reader if you wanted a reading while waiting for your meal.
