The restaurant was quite spacious, and there were not many diners on the Tuesday night of our visit (later found out there was a big football match). The service was exceedingly professional, despite a very laid back look. Very friendly and also extremely knowledgeable, and our waiter helped a lot with dish selection and explanation. We all ordered the four course option. Looking at the menu I had my doubts about enjoying the meal, but I was wrong. Again, dishes are listed as the four or so main ingredients in the dish, with no other descriptors. I ordered the Yellowfin Tuna starter, Iberico Presa as the "Between", Gnocchi as my main course, and the cheese. Wow. The tuna was rare and cut into ceviche-sized pieces, paired with other ingredients and served on a sort of tomato broth base. It was fresh and delicious. Everything worked so well together (theme of all the dishes). Others in my group had either the cauliflower or duck confit, and all thought those were wonderful as well. The Iberico Presa was a slow cooked cut of pork, and it was maybe the slightly lower point in the meal, as the pork was not as tender as I would have preferred. The rich sauce and onion really complimented the pork, though. My main was the Gnocchi, and it looked unlike any I've ever seen. In fact, when the dish was set down I could not tell that it was Gnocchi, as the gnocchi itself was covered with a crunchy...something! Not sure what it was, but again everything was delicious! The Gnocchi were plated with red chicory, and also had garlic and puntarelle. A wonderful dish. A perfect cheese plate to finish our fabulous meal. We all talked about this place. A culinary gem in Amsterdam.

Jacobz is a top-knotch high service restaurant that brings more then decent cuisine at moderate prices. Staff was very attentative and flexible, budt most of all relaxed and non-intrusive. We had a three course meal with some quick bites upfront; all of which were of a very good quality (maybe not Michelin-star, but cutting it close). The wine list features a very broad combination of classics and new world surprises. Interior design is very spacious for Amsterdam standards (ambitious, one might say), but it certainly lives up to what it appeare to be. Will definetely be back; often. There's plenty of tables, with seats for 40+ people. I like the small, cozy café. It's light and they have a good coffee choice. I love the nice, modern restaurant. The daily pasta specials are so lekker, they must be cooked by an Italian chef with a lot of amore. Last but not least there's the cool bar with the living room in the back and the amazing mural illustrated by Rafaella Wang. This piece of art is a visual delight. The bar is always packed and I know why. Pure gezelligheid.

Some of the dishes a la carte are of great quality. My friends enjoyed a nice tuna carpacio as starter and seabass perfectly cooked with veggies. I managed to have few nice bites from their plates :)I have to say I was also impressed by their gratin dauphinois. Though a classic, this is really not such an easy French dish to prepare. Potatoes were thinly sliced, perfectly cooked with light and soft cream. - : Unfortunately for me I was in a foody mood and decided to try their "more elaborated dishes" a la carte. "Soupe de poisson a la Marseillaise" is a French cuisine classic. In their version of this dish, the fish and the shrimp did bring a nice note, but the quality was average. Way too liquid, no fine texture, the rouille sauce was like a basic mayonnaise... I am always a bit disappointed when those classics are not well executed :( Then I tried the "stuffed" coeur d'artichaud (artichoke). The artichoke was way too big and it felt like they tried to put as many things as possible in the filling (big pieces of mushrooms, other vegetables, cheese....). I was really expecting something lighter, fine and subtle. It's a great creative idea... too bad it did not deliver on my expectations. Luckily the sweet notes at the end were very nice. Try the meringue or the delicat au chocolate (cake). Though a bit filling the flavors are intense and I have had my great dose of chocolate for the week. In few words, a friendly table with a nice menu du jour. I would have given another star, if the service was a bit faster. We had to wait a lot to get the menus (and ended up looking at their website with our iphones) as well as inbetween dishes.

Nothing about the evening really made me think it warranted such a high star rating. The staff are very nice here and that was the saving grace to the evening. The food whilst sounded interesting and inventive was anything but. It was showmanship that lacked the wow factor. The best dishes of the night were the amuse bouche. I had almost all dishes prepared at the table and almost every dish had foam of some kind. I am sorry but foam is so last season, specially when almost every course comes with it. Wine list was ok but lacked decent priced wine options. The service was good but lacking the full attention to detail like specific instructions that were not followed or, failing to bring things without being asked or perhaps, asked twice. This is simply not the level one should expect in a place like this. The food was ok. I have never been to a Michelin restaurant where courses were sent back uneaten or staff failed to ask why we are sending something back. I found many of the courses too salty and the layout of the place did not easily facilitate table-side cooking. The vegetarian main of "cous cous" was bland and both of the people sent it back partly eaten. All three of us sent back the cabbage and my favourite dish of the evening was the sweetbread. The rest were unimaginative at best. At best I would give it 2.5 stars for the food and 4 for service. Value for money is a 2. I informed one of the waitresses when we arrived that it was my sons 30th. In any other place including my local Bavarian he would have got a small cake with a candle and here nothing. We did not even get offered the petit four as I had asked for the bill. In most such places we would have been sent away with a nice box of petit fours and so on and so forth. For what you pay for a meal here I just expect more. Pretty disappointed with the overall experience and we have been to tons of Michelin restaurants around the world.

From the wonderful view and attractive ambiance to the great service to the excellent wine pairing to the incredible food, it was the perfect experience. First, I'll start with the location. Without requesting a special seat, we had a nice booth for four with a wonderful view of the canal and a church. It started with some glare but the staff quickly noticed and lowered a shade, then raised the shade as the sunset so we could enjoy the view and the sunset. The restaurant itself was great, very bright and modern. The staff was also perfect. Our lead server (I'm awful at names) was incredible. She had recently moved to the Netherlands from Portugal (only here a month) but her English was great and her attitude better. She was friendly but not at all phones. She was quite attentive, whenever we needed anything she was there. She did a great job of describing each dish. Most importantly, she really cared that we enjoyed our meal, particularly my son (who is a little cautious in what he eats), doing everything she could to make the meal perfect. The food itself was great. Both my wife and I had the Inspiration Menu, the smaller of two tasting menus, my daughter had a vegetarian tasting menu and my son ordered a la carte. Everything on the inspiration menu was fantastic but I was particularly pleased with the multiple "surprises", small amuse bouche type dishes. It seemed we had a full meal before our tasting menu even started. I also loved the caviar with tuna and octopus, the turbot and pigeon, all were incredible. They tasted fantastic and beautiful presentation. The only problem with the restaurant is it will make future meals seem bleh, no matter how good they are. I will never forget this dinner.
