In the Fort for a short time we picked W for lunch, and happy we did so. It's not a fancy place, but offers solid breakfast and lunch in an honest manner. With the amount of locals that were there, it must be good. A lot of the people that came in had their beverage of choice brought to their table before even sitting down. Our server was attentive, quick to fill our water again prior to our food arriving. I had the BLT with waffle fries, which was very good, lots of bacon, nice tomato and copious waffle fries piping hot! Spot on. The lovely K's Patty Melt wasn't as successful, but they allowed half fries, half onion rings which a lot of places won't do. The onion rings were so tasty, and K loves them. The space inside could use a little love, but it's not trying to be something it's not. A breakfast and lunch diner, and a pretty darn good one at that. We'd return for sure! read more

Food is always good and quick to your table. Service is great, the few issues I have had over the years were dealt with promptly and left me feeling more than satisfied. Even when the restaurant is packed you can still carry on a conversation without having to raise your voice or speak over others. read more

This place is amazing! Holy cow! The portion sizes are incredible and the flavour was out of this world. We will definitely be back again. If you haven't checked this place out make sure you do. Standard breakfast place offering big selections of both breakfast and lunch items. My server was lovely and paid attention my coffee; she never let me run out of it (thank goodness)! I ordered the fully loaded omelette with shredded hash browns. I thought the omelette itself was a bit oily, but that's to be expected when it had bacon and cheese. Underwhelming. I came for breakfast with some friends and a young child and I just felt this place was lacking in literally every area. The food had little to no spice, it seemed to have barely any salt. The time it took to get fairly basic breakfast items was lengthy. The bathroom (men's) had the only toilet out of order with no noted alternative (I would imagine the women's would've been fine to use but a sign for permission or something would've been ideal). The table had a major wobble to it. The pricing was priced as if it was some premium place but like I'm noting about, this place was far from premium. $10 for children's freezer microwave food is a bit wild. Not recommended, there's many better places in town. read more

I thought the W was quite good. I had the mini eggs Benedict with ham. Very tasty. The hollandaise was quite good. Very sparing on the actual dish however so I asked for some extra which came in a small ramekin, Stone cold. When I inquired about it, I was told that it is always served that way. I have never had cold hollandaise sauce on an Eggs Benedict. Plus they charged me three extra dollars! For a tiny ramekin Granted it was homemade and very tasty, plus the egg was cooked perfectly. I still enjoyed it slightly less because of the hollandaise being thick and cold. I chose the shredded potatoes with my breakfast entrée. They were also cold and abit greasy. I would try this place again if I ever were in town, because everything is homemade, and my server Glenda, was great. Definitely worth a second chance. read more

Breakfast diners in FSJ are almost always crowded, noisy and rushed. W is the newly renovated cafe side of Mama Panda's Chinese restaurant. Since opening in May it hasn't quite caught on with the morning crowd. This allows patrons to enjoy fresh home style cooking in relative quiet. The kitchen does the little things really well. The right amount of runny yolk in a soft poached egg without leaving an uncooked white. The use of fresh, rather than processed frozen hashed browns. A tasty mix of grilled ham and chopped veggie hash on the house egg bennie. Most of the dishes have real eye appeal. Check out the posted photos. W loves early risers and offers discount meal specials before 9 am. Sort of a happy hour for early birds and excellent value. I strongly suggest visiting before word gets out and crowds start filling up this great little diner. read more

This place is currently closed...and it's not hard to see why. From talking to many people, the service and food quality was WILDLY inconsistent, with the owner/chef then crying that people just weren't willing to pay the prices for "real food". Trust me, Jamie...that's not it. We had high hopes when we visited, as we absolutely respect quality food, made from real ingredients. The atmosphere was very cool, kind of a retro-diner feel. The bench/table we were seated at was very comfortable, and I thought to myself that it would be a great brunch place to visit with friends or family. However, my opinion soon changed. Our waitress seemed to be working alone, and while she wasn't extremely busy, she was busy enough that she had to hustle a bit. She did a good job making sure that all tables were touched frequently and taken care of. (I later learned that she was fired. Apparently the chef would receive complaints, blame the staff, fire everyone, start over with new/inexperienced staff with inadequate training, would inevitably receive complaints, and the cycle would begin again...) After placing our order, we noticed an acrid burnt smell in the air like burning plastic. At first, it was just a mild distraction. When our waitress came to refill our drinks, I joked "is the chef burning the place down?" and was told (with an exasperated sigh like she'd been asked that question FREQUENTLY) that it was their toaster, and that it "just makes that smell...all the time" and they didn't know why, but had told the owner. It didn't smell like burnt toast though. It seriously smelled like burning plastic. We received our food, after a reasonable wait. Visually, things were presented well...but the portions were quite small for the price. Fort St. John is used to huge portions for breakfast. Still, you DO pay more for quality, so we figured the food would be worth it. My French toast was raw in the middle. Extremely raw in the middle. The only syrup I was offered was a bottle of sugar-free store-bought syrup for diabetics. I asked about the Bourbon Maple Syrup that was pimped all over Facebook, with people raving about it, and was told that this was the only syrup they had. It was FOUL. If I was a diabetic and it was my only option, I would have sworn off pancakes/French toast, it was so bad. I can't handle artificial sweeteners, and this was LOADED with them. I decided to just eat my eggs instead...but they were undercooked and runny on top. Not the yolk...the white. It was like snot, and inedible. My husband's burger was ok, but certainly nothing phenomenal. It was at the time I found most of my meal to be inedible that the second wave of burnt plastic smell permeated through the diningroom. At that point, I got nauseaous and told my husband that we had to go. We tipped our waitress, as her service was great...but I really didn't want to think that she maybe had to tip out the cook from that. He did nothing to deserve a tip that day. Later at home, I noticed a Facebook post reviewing the restaurant and complaining about all the other experiences people had had, some much like my own. Posters encouraged us to message the chef, Jamie. I did, and was written back excuse after excuse. Real food costs more, they can't afford to have bigger portions as a result, the burning smell was just the toaster, the waitress was fired for her incompetence, Jamie wasn't sure WHY I was given the sugar-free syrup, which was apparently only meant for diabetic patrons....etc. Jamie invited me to bring my husband back, and said that they would buy us breakfast if we would give them another try. At the time, my husband had just left for a camp job, as he works in the oil patch. By the time he came back, W was closed. We never did get a chance to try them again or use our "free breakfast". Rumor and screenshots going around Facebook, supposedly from chef Jamie, places the blame on the owners, explaining that Jamie left when the people who own the building (as well as Mama Panda next door) wanted to reduce food cost by going with less fresh foods and more pre-prepared, frozen, instant, etc. cheaper options. W now sits empty, and it's future is unclear. I'm not sure what will happen now, but it COULD be such a great place. You DO have to manage food costs, as a chef. It's great to want to do everything fresh but if you can't make money at it and end up going under...then you're not successful at your job. It was such a cute, neat little place. I really hope someone else takes up the reins and gives us a great, casual diner with good food and excellent service. What a great place to go for breakfast. Service was quick and efficient. As far as the food goes I was very impressed. Ordered the eggs benny with a side of fruit. The eggs were hot and cooked perfectly, hollandaise was homemade and delish, and the fruit in the fruit salad was fresh and not overripe which I find is a common issue. Was also fairly priced. Very impressed and will return if I am ever in FSJ for breakfast. read more
