I was so over bathing Tyrone at home because it always turns into a whole mess. I searched for the closest self service dog wash near me and Wag A Lot came up. I checked their pricing and saw it was $15, plus it was only about a 7 minute drive, so I decided to try it out. As soon as we walked in, the staff immediately greeted Tyrone (he's a pug) and me, which I appreciated. They also let me know that since I brought my own shampoo, my total would be $13 instead of $15, which was a nice surprise. The place was really clean, and yes, it smells like dog, but that's kind of expected since it's a doggy daycare and boarding spot. The wash area was solid and did exactly what it needed to do. They had plenty of clean towels, plus shampoo and conditioner available if you need it, and a good assortment of grooming tools. To clean the dog yourself! I've been resisting paying to wash my own dog somewhere but the ease of it is worth it to not have to bend and clean up the tub. I've taken multiple pets here over the past 10 years and have usually had good experiences here until recently. I'm not sure if there is new staff or new management or something, but the service has become inept at best. We took our two dogs for grooming and they SCALPED them both. Instructions were for a mini-groom and for the groomer to call to speak with us. We never got a call. Even if we had asked for a buzz this is still a terrible grooming. When my wife picked the dogs up (after paying first and leaving a tip) the dogs were brought out. When my wife told them this was incorrect and she wasn't happy about our golden retriever being shaved against our wishes, the two boys at the counter simply looked at her with blank expressions and told her the manager would be in the next day. My wife was told it said mini groom on the paperwork. My wife had multiple calls with them and they continued to attempt blame her/us for the issue even bringing up that we shaved our dogs on a previous visit years ago. They eventually gave us a refund after too much haggling but no one ever even apologized for the mistake or the blatant rudeness or the complete lack of acceptable customer service levels. Much like other reviewers, my dogs were required to take a new temp test after too much time had passed since their previous one (the first they passed with flying colors). Today, they were failed within less than an hour for being aggressive. My younger dog was clearly feeling stressed being thrown into "gen pop" with dogs of all sizes and given no benefit of the doubt, nor consideration for any distress he might be feeling. For people who advertise their knowledge of dog behavior this illustrates having no understanding of it whatsoever. Today our old girl, Abby got to go and be pampered at the Decatur location. She and I walked in the other day from Dearborn animal hospital after a short boarding weekend. We were greeted quickly and given information on grooming. I talked about afternoon appointments and thought we were set for 12-12:30. Our confirmation didn't confirm the time so I asked. Glad I did!! Apparently, your dog has to be there before 10am. We were able to get her there- thanks hubby. She arrived at 7:30 but wasn't done until 2pm so I am a bit confused over the timing.. Upon pickup and she got the whole treatment from nose to tail. Suds, shed free, ears and nails. Total bill 65.00. It seemed pretty reasonable but this was a treat after losing her best friend a couple weeks ago. They did ask if I wanted to tip. Which is fine but I would suggest to the staff to let us see the dog first. So, I tipped blindly and it would have been higher had I seen her first. Bottom line, she looks great and smells better. I would take her back at least once a year as we bathe her ourselves. read more

We had been taking our dog here for a couple of months for boarding and grooming. The boarding has been okay and our dog seemed to enjoy it. However, the grooming service was so bad that it has prompted me to write a review. Our dog was groomed 3 times at the Decatur location. The first time my husband picked him up and wanted to ask some questions of the groomer. He found the groomer to be very dismissive and rude. The next time he was groomed we had no interaction with the groomer, as it happened while he was boarded. No complaints that time, the cut was good. As recommended, we scheduled his next cut 5 weeks out. The tropical storm hit and we had to move the appointment one more week, so he'd be going 6 weeks with no grooming. Didn't see a problem there, as the recommendation was 5 weeks and we were only extending by one. We opted to have him stay for the day as we were both working that day. When we pick him up things seemed fine at first. His cut was shorter than we would have wanted, but overall good. However, our dog's behavior was off. His normally jumpy self was more subdued. When we got at home we noticed he was hiding a lot and whimpering. When I checked on him he was bleeding and raw by the testicles. We did our best to comfort him and treat with neosporin. The next morning I called Wag-a-lot to speak to the groomer. Obviously I wanted to know what happened and how we can help treat our dog. The groomer got on the phone and was dismissive and defensive immediately. He basically blamed us saying that he should go in every 3-5 weeks (again it was rescheduled due to the storm and we got him from a shelter in terrible shape with tons of mats and he never came back bleeding from a groomer) and that this is why he doesn't recommend the dogs play after the grooming session. Which if that was a recommendation it should be communicated at booking. He never communicated any concern for our dog or ideas to care for him. I had to push him on that and he just said to put neosporin on it. To be honest, I wouldn't even be writing a bad review if he had better customer service. I'm assuming nicks happen. If he had apologized and offered even a bit of care I would not be writing. I still would not have taken our dog back to him, as having my dog in pain for a week was unacceptable. But the poor customer service put me over the edge. Overall, I would not recommend taking your dog to be groomed there. We had to work with our vet and put him in a cone to heal. We have a French bull dog who loves every human and dog he has ever played with and has never been aggressive before in his life. He apparently failed the "temperament test" because he wanted to play with every other dog and they said the other dogs might attack him for annoying them. As others have mentioned in previous reviews, they seem to fail dogs within an hour of arriving who have no aggressive qualities just because they are excitable or happy to be at a new location and visiting other dogs. On top of this we have boarded him here like 8 months ago and they said we needed to pay for a new temperament test because it had been too long. (He passed the first one but apparently he has just become aggressive?) I will also add that when we did board him here he came back with quite a few scratches and scabs so they clearly do not pay attention to the dogs well enough. I would strongly discourage anyone from coming here because the staff lack professionalism and any sort of knowledge about dogs and their breeds and personalities. People seem to really like this place. I thought we would too. Everyone who works there was super nice. I tried doing my research and thought this would be a great place for our pup to learn to interact with other dogs. My dog had her first experience there (and first time at any daycare) and I was called within an hour or so and the second call. Are 3 hours later. My "socially awkward" dog is not a good fit here. I'm not sure exactly what that means really as she is a puppy and she never experienced being with that many dogs in an open area before. It's all good through as we found someplace else that works with dogs as no one is comfortable on their first day of school. PS- my dog is not socially awkward. So I usually never post about my bad experiences with places, but I couldn't let this one go without talking about. Lola has been going to the same doggy daycare/boarding/grooming place since she was a puppy. She has NEVER had any issues, and the staff always told me how great she was, and how she loved being their little lap dog while she was there. Unfortunately, a few months ago they had to close their doors. I was so excited to see there was another doggy daycare/boarding place right down the road. I called to see about grooming and such, and then they said if I wanted to board her there I had to bring her in for a temperament test. No big deal, she's such a sweet and loving dog. I drop her off at 7:20 this morning, and at 8:00 they are calling me to inform me that Lola would not be able to pass their temperament test. They claimed she was "too anxious" and barked/growled if another dog got close. Then they proceeded to say it was because she was in a new place. I had peaked at the cameras a few times before the call, and I saw them pointing their fingers at her, and couldn't tell if they were yelling, but it looked like it. I'm all for correcting a dog if they are in the wrong, but if my dog is obviously anxious, and you can tell she is not adjusting well to her new space, please don't just yell at her. Hold her, comfort her, make her feel loved, and try and calm her anxiety. How can you do that within the 40 minutes you actually watched her?? They did not try and comfort her and help her adjust to her new environment once, and within an hour they had come to the conclusion she was unfit for their facility. Anyone that has ever met Lola knows how much of a sweet love bug she is, and how she doesn't have one malicious bone in her 12 lb body. I told them that she has never acted that way, or bitten anyone/animal in her life, and that maybe she just needed time to adjust, and maybe a little love. Their answer to that was, "We can't risk your dog putting a hole in another dog here." Lola. My 12 lb maltipoo who is the most loveable dog on this planet. I'm not saying they should not take her reactions seriously, but the fact that they did not even give her an hour to adjust, did not try and help her through a process she could not fully grasp, did not try and pet her or comfort her, upsets me in so many ways. They didn't listen to me when I told them how she was a good dog, and how she had never had any prior incidents. They just wrote her off, and then locked her away from all the other dogs. In all honesty, I'm just disappointed. I'm sad they have people working there that don't give dogs the chance to truly get use to their environment, or work with them to become comfortable. All she needed was a little love, and they could have learned that with one phone call to me to ask about why she was acting the way she was. But they didn't call me until 40 minutes after she arrived to let me know how she was not fit for their facility. read more

We honestly cannot say enough great things about Wag-A-Lot. I recently started bringing my dog Cam here (decatur location) at the recommendation of a family friend. We couldn't be more pleased with the service we receive each time, the friendliness and dependability of the staff and the happiness it brings to our dog and us. I feel great knowing that when I need to, I can bring my dog to a place that he LOVES, with great people and lots of furry friends to play with. It so nice not to have to worry about anything when he's in Wag-a-Lot's care.I was nervous at first, being that i'm an overprotective dog-mom, but its very clear that my dog has a blast here and the staff and behavioral specialist bode work hard at their jobs and genuinely love what they do. They take great care of my dog. Cam almost looks annoyed when he sees Ive come to pick him up. ;) One of my favorite things about wag-a-lot is the fact that Cam gets a lot of socialization and exercise time in a safe environment. He doesn't just sit in a crate all day like many other places. I also love that we can watch the wag-cams online while he's there and see pictures of his visit. I cant imagine switching to a different boarder, and plan to travel to Wag-a-Lot when i eventually move out of Decatur. In my opinion, its worth every penny and very affordable. I took my 2 year old Corgi there roughly 6 months ago and have absolutely loved the comfort and level of care that she has received during her many stays there. I travel frequently for work and like most people, my dog is like another child to me. I was concerned about leaving her there 2-3 times a month but any concerns I had have now been alleviated. The staff is always incredibly friendly and they maintain an extremely clean environment. There is something special about being able to travel without constantly worrying about the safety and well-being of my dog. We brought our two dogs into here to try daycare. Our one was too scared to leave the cage the put her in, which was so sad to hear. She currently goes to a different daycare and loves it. To me this means that the staff here didn't take the time to get to know her or make her feel comfortable, which is what she needed. Each dog is different and needs to be treated as such. I wish they would have taken the extra step to make her comfortable. The place looked clean enough but they both came home smelling and needed baths (regardless if they were in play group or the cage). Wag-A-Lot is the only place I ever leave my dog. While I haven't been to any other locations, the Decatur location is great! The staff is always very friendly, and the facility is always clean. My pupster, Cricket, always seems very happy when I pick her up, instead of anxious like she is at other boarding facilities. In addition, the groomers at Wag-A-Lot are loads better than any of the other 'board/groom' places I've been too. For some reason, other places don't seem to know how to cut a Cairn Terrier, but Wag-A-Lot does a fantastic job with breed-specific hair cuts. read more

I've never actually boarded my dog here but I did take him in for a day of doggie daycare which is required before boarding in order to test the dogs compatibility with the facility. I like that they test for compatibility because it shows that they really care about the animals happiness and aren't just trying to get your money. My dog was completely nervous and the staff was SO NICE. They really seemed like they were taking the time to get to know him and were very sweet when his nerves caused him to have a little accident in the waiting area. The part that completely blew me away was when I arrived to pick him up and they handed me a "behavior assessment". They had about twenty little boxes of personality traits and checked off each one that applied to my dog. Although that could be a little gimmicky, they took the time to add an additional handwritten note about his experience in doggie daycare and how he behaved. I have had my share of working with this company.This review is a mix from a few years back until current. At first glance everyone seems to be nice and sweet. The animal behaviorist Bodie is his name I think is pretty cool he reminds me of Travis Barker. He was very nice and has always been informative of my pups old and new every time I bring them. The company must love their employees because over the years I have seen the same people with a few newbies. I will say when I first started bringing my dog back in 2015 there was two young ladies that stood out one was an light skinned African American lady I cannot remember her name for the life of me but I know it started with a T because everyone there kept calling her something different than the name she told me, but anyway off subject. She always remembered my dog and I and showed her love for my baby boy she would hug him and be like ready to go play pup. He loved coming because of her and it made me so happy to know that he was giving the best love at daycare. Sadly she is no longer there. Then there was a manager name Kiera I think that's her name she was always nice and informative on anything I asked of her, the two ladies worked together a lot as to how I remember them the most. The old groomer I think her name was Amanda was awesome and now she is gone as well. The people there are nice but they will carry conversations about inappropriate topics that should not be discussed at work, and they will keep talking even when customers are in the lobby. One night my husband had to pick our dog up and called me after he left and said that two employees walked in from the back and they smelled like weed. He also said that everyone that night all looked high. I just think that's so not cool. All in all the place is nice and my dogs loved it there. But they will not let you know ahead if your dog has an issue until the day they let you know your pup can not come back to them until they have had some type of training. Training for what is the question. Its freaking day camp dogs play, they never said he was aggressive because he is a sweetie pie. They said he didn't listen and did not understand simple commands. I did argue with them and went and got training and he was welcomed back but I felt as though the people had an attitude with me and really didn't like my dog. He never came home the same as he did before the break and he went to training I don't know if they hated him or what so I just stopped bringing him. Sink or swim I spoke to team members here three times via email, instagram, and phone before bringing my puppy in for her trial day, and it was still a disaster. Despite their assurances that my dog would be placed with other dogs that were her size and temperment, they apparently gave her less than ten minutes to acclimate to one or two dogs, then just threw her in with the entire pack of dogs that was there that day (according to a staffer, over 80 dogs). Then they called me and told me my puppy was traumatized and "not suitable for daycare". Well, no kidding. Who in their right mind would just turn a puppy loose with 80+ dogs and expect her to fend for herself? I didn't even make it home before they called me telling me I needed to come pick her up, so instead of the "up to 5 hours" of assessment, they must have given her less than 10 minutes and then just thrown her into the general group. Unbelievable, not to mention possibly dangerous - my pup could never have defended herself against some of the dogs they had her in with, if something had gone drastically wrong. read more

We moved to Wag A Lot and our dog literally pirouette into the building. She is so happy going to daycare and has never gotten sick. On the web-cam, I watched my dog sit alone in a room with nothing but concrete floors for over 10 minutes. This was while a dozen dogs played and interacted with people in a different room and several more played outside with more humans. Eventually my dog started nervously yelping, barking and pacing around with his tail tucked between his legs. When I called and asked why he was alone in the room I was put on hold and then told "he just did not want to come outside and wanted to be alone" which was the opposite of what I was witnessing happen in real time. When I said as such I was greeted with a horribly condescending and disrespectful tone. I had to worry for the rest of the day that something else was going to happen or leave work early to go get him. We will NEVER bring him back. read more

Horrible customer service. Jennifer was extremely rude, she took one look at me and assumed I didn't have an appointment. When I explained that I did, they were reluctant to even check the computer. They obviously were too full and didn't want any more dogs for the day. When they realized that we had in fact an appointment, scheduled weeks in advance. She pointed at my small Lab and said " THAT'S NOT GOING TO WORK". They have both of our dogs full medical and psych history. This dog is extremely sweet and loving, when he is threatened he can get scared like most animals. I just assumed that Wag A Lot employees had a very basic understanding of proper canine interaction but this is clearly not the case. I obviously would not recommend leaving your dog here. read more

We've taken our dogs to Wag-A-Lot in Decatur for daycare when we were moving, and for boarding on several occasions. The staff is always really nice and accommodating and our dogs are always happy to be dropped off there, which we take as a sign that they enjoy it. Yes, after a few days of boarding they come home smelling like dogs and we have to bathe them. Honestly I don't think that's as much the fault of the facility as it is the fact that they are, in fact, dogs. They play and slobber and sweat and get stinky, which we also take as a sign that they have fun. Overall, we love the place. read more

After coming to Wag-A-Lot for over 5 years, I have to say that my husband and I are extremely disappointed. He went to drop off the dogs this morning and the staff was extremely rude to him because she thought that he was a walk-in. Once they realized that we already had a reservation and a reservation for the holidays, they agreed to do the behavioral assessment but were extremely busy. Milo barked, and they immediately made my husband leave and said that our dogs are not allowed at the facility. I'm extremely disappointed as Milo is a great dog, he's just scared of strangers and needs a 5 minute introduction. My husband is shocked by the behavior of your staff and their immediate response to turning away Milo after he barked. I understand that you guys are busy, but please know that I will never again refer this facility nor will I spend my money here. This isn't just about Milo. You previously banned my foster dog Otis, but we respected your decision and we still came back to you, because you are the best. I'm angry because you didn't give Milo a CHANCE and you kicked my husband out after I had holiday reservations for over 2 weeks. read more

I take my 7 year old springer spaniel, Beau, to this location for daycare & boarding. Beau hyperventilates (not really, but you get the point) as soon as we get in their parking lot. If I know I have a 10 hour day at the office, their hours are so convenient-6:30 am to 7:30 pm. I refer to my dog as my angel even though I know he is mischievous and sloppy to a fault, BUT- the staff there treats Beau like family! She has several buddies that she plays with and has even made human friends as well. I love the days I take her in for daycare and she comes home pooped out. I really wanted to like Wag-A-Lot, nice showroom and the staff up front is very nice. My dog thoroughly enjoyed going there, but I've found he's thriving in a different daycare environment. Save yourself the time and money - don't go here. Learn from my mistake. Over the course of occasional visits over a few months, my dog caught hookworm at this facility, resulting in $400 in vet bills for my dog to recover. I felt scammed by them, as a "trainer" who I had never seen before, who identifies behavioral issues in your pet and recommends additional training. They tried this with me, unaware that I am taking my dog through very highly accredited dog training. His "diagnosis" of my dog's behavior was 180 degrees different than a true professional dog trainer. We all love our animals and want the very best for them, so don't let the "trainer" prey on those feelings by telling you your dog has suddenly changed behavior. I found it incredibly ironic as we went to training 1 hour after leaving the Wag-A-Lot, and none of the behavior my dog supposedly exhibited occurred - even when I stepped out to see if it would be different without me there.
