We were traveling Austin to Las Cruces and figured Ozona for a good lunch stop. Wagon Wheel BBQ was top-rated on Yelp. When you exit I-10 (Exit 365) find Ave E (Hwy 163) and follow it south about 1/2 mile. The business has no sign. It is in a remodeled 60s gas station directly across from a Pilot commercial fueling station. The place is unpretentious and very clean. While we ate we talked with the couple who own the business. They are very nice and hella friendly. They have 40 years experience in the bbq and restaurant business. We had the brisket sandwich and a pulled chicken sandwich. They were both amazing. Exceeded our expectations. The meat was cooked over a direct heat bbq pit on the property carefully occupying the hot or cooler sides. The potato salad was made from her Grandmother's recipe and was great. Our recommendation is that you get off the freeway and seek out Wagon Wheel BBQ for a great meal. For westbound travelers, Ozona is the last gas for 100 miles. read more

Deceiving, yes everything about it is deceiving. From the previous undisguised use as an old time gas station to all the clutter around the place to barely a sign to call attention to the joint. Don't be put off by all that and miss a really tremendous meal of super BBQ or meeting such nice people as the owners. If you miss the sign, you probably won't miss the smell of Q as you drive by, which we did, twice. Friday, just about 1:15, turned out to be a great time to be there. The inside isn't much different. No one is trying to fool you with charades. Just order, sit down, and let your nostrils fill your mind until the food is served. It's relatively small inside, maybe 15/18 seats max. Noticed some people walking in for take-out. We know why they stop. Two big, hungry eaters shared a 2 meat plate, brisket and ribs, both directly off the smoke, with pinto beans and cole slaw. We stopped here on a road trip based on the reviews here on Yelp. We were tired of the usual highway exit fare. As the other reviewers have said, this place is very unassuming, there were 3 tables that I could see and the restroom is entered from a door on the outside of the building. But despite its humble appearance, the food and service were great. My son got a BBQ wrap and the other 4 of us got 1-meat plates -- 3 brisket and 1 ribs. All of us agreed the meat was tender and delicious. I couldn't decide between the ribs and the sausage, so they threw in a couple bites of sausage with my ribs, and also brought over a few complimentary pieces of cherry cobbler, which was amazing. The pastry was obviously homemade and was flaky and delicious. Even my daughter, who usually doesn't like cherries, devoured a whole piece. :) We will definitely eat here if/when we're in Ozona again. read more

Wow . Don't typically write enough reviews, but this place is all around disappointing. From the restroom to the meat. My biggest frustration was the reviews of the place. We stopped on those alone. Not sure where they are coming from, but this is the beginning of Texas bbq country and this place and it's food we're sad.. way to much warming in crockpots. The "wrap" was a cold flower tortilla with a sausage link.. that's it. No bueno. The rib meat was fall off the bone over crocked and flavorless, the brisket uneatable. No idea about the food here. It may be great. When we arrived at 7:40pm we were rudely informed that they close at 8:00pm and if we want anything to eat, we need to get it to go!! I'd love to give this place a four as the family running it seemed awfully nice and friendly. The food was good but not outstanding. The meat in particular was kinda questionable. I had the ribs, and although they were seasoned and smoked well, the meat itself was somewhat grisly with more connective tissue than I am accustomed to with TX bbq. Peach cobbler was disappointing but not bad. Atmosphere was kinda weird. Not used to the owners sitting one table over the whole time in a very intimate setting. The drive along I-10 between Austin and El Paso is a lonely, unforgiving stretch of road offering few places to grab a late lunch. I was relieved, therefore, to find the Wagon Wheel BBQ just minutes off the highway. The smell of sweet smoke was pleasant upon entering the roadside cafe and my first impression was that I'd stepped into my grandmothers kitchen. My true test of good BBQ is the brisket, of which I ordered a half pound along with a link of sausage. To begin, the BBQ sauce, which is store bought, was tangy, lightly sweet, and went well with the barbecue. The sausage, smoked perfectly, had that signature "pop" when bitten into and was nicely spiced. The brisket, on the other hand, was over-smoked, over-done, and very dry. Look for the gray/blue building with yellow trim. Don't be scared. The owner out back cooking the barbecue, his wife inside scooping up the food out of several crock pots in the counter. Brisket was as tender as slow cooked pot roast, great flavor. Meat fell off the ribs, homemade potato salad, homemade bread and beans were all delicious. Wanted the banana pudding but they were out. Tucked into the long stretch of Texas between Ft. Stockton and Fredericksburg, this unassuming gas-station-like restaurant is easy to miss, even if you *do* have the Yelp directions. But missing it would be *huge* mistake! Kirby and his family at the Wagon Wheel not only serve some of the best brisket, sausage and turkey barbeque I've ever had, but they are also about the most genuinely friendly human beings I've ever met. Walking into the place feels like walking into someone's living room, and sitting down for dinner feels like being one of the family. On top of all that, their sides are delicious, super-fresh, and a perfect compliment to their meat dishes. We were passing through Ozona on our way home from my grandson's graduation and chose the Wagon Wheel for lunch based on the other Yelp reviews. As indicated, this is an old gas station and looks to be closed until you look inside. I didn't notice that there was more than a table or two for dining but we were getting ours to go, so no problem. At first, we were a bit apprehensive to find that everything is served from large electric roasters that are sitting in a row on a table. No discernible kitchen area, almost like the food is prepared somewhere else and brought in to sell. But, we are adventurous and the aroma was tantalizing to say the least. We both got the sandwich special which is a sandwich, chips and a drink for slightly more than $6 bucks. Took our food and hit the road. First, I'll say the sweet tea is really good and I wished I had upgraded to a large. Now, about the chopped beef sandwich. That thick, dripping, messy, absolutely delectable chopped beef sandwich! It was wrapped in aluminum foil and it was a good thing since there is no way a standard paper hamburger wrapper would have held in all that yummy BBQ messiness. The beef was finally chopped and smoky without being overpowering and drenched in a slightly sweet, spicy BBQ sauce. Needless to say we got it all over us but found ourselves completely stuffed and totally happy with our choice. If we lived closer, I would definitely be a regular at this place. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars was because it was kind of dingy and you had to ask for a key and go outside and around back to find the restroom (which was, BTW, clean). Don't be put off by the exterior (or interior) of this place. The BBQ is worth it! read more
