If you like to stay in quirky and historical hotels, check this one out for sure. Will it have…read moreluxury accommodations? Far from it. In fact, there's a good chance you'll have to deal with certain inconveniences. Still, it's an experience and if you appreciate that sort of thing, I recommend it. This particular hotel is based on the novel "The Virginian," by Owen Wister. It was published in 1902 and is hailed as the first Western. It takes place just outside of Medicine Bow. WEBSITE: https://historicvirginianhotel.vpweb.com/default.html. Their website has some information (including a couple photos of a few of the rooms) but is missing a lot of details so I'll do my best to fill you in. ROOM OPTIONS/RESERVATIONS: You have to call to reserve a room. They have several options. They are listed on their website but I'll do my best to elaborate. In the main hotel building, you've got sixteen antique rooms which includes four suites. This means they are decorated in a historical fashion and contain artifacts from a bygone era. They didn't have any suites available when we called but if I had my pick, I'd definitely stay in the suite. They were big and full of neat stuff (definitely felt like the most authentic/interesting experience the hotel had to offer). You won't find a TV or a fridge or a microwave in these rooms, FYI. The reason I'm familiar with these rooms is because we walked around and explored - they keep the doors open until the guests arrive so the rooms can be viewed. Also, not every room had an en suite bathroom. The suites definitely did. Some of the larger rooms may have, I don't recall. But from what I can remember, most rooms did not. There were several shared bathrooms in the hallway. Just be aware of that when you call to make your reservation. In addition to the antique rooms, there's a separate motel building. From what I understand, these are just basic motel rooms (probably best for someone who just wants a bed for the night and doesn't care about the history part of it). There is also a renovated bank building next door that has four rooms. This is where I stayed and I recommend it if you want a somewhat authentic experience but also want some conveniences. We could have gone with one of the antique sleeping rooms in the main building that shared a bathroom but we decided we'd prefer a private bathroom. The bank building rooms aren't as antique, but they have antique elements along with conveniences like a private bathroom, a fridge, and a microwave. Our room had an amazingly creepy altar on a wall shelf - an antique bassinet, a mirror, a suitcase. While I wish I stayed in a suite for a more authentic experience, it was a nice compromise. Either way, no matter where you stay, make sure you go into the main hotel building and check out the sleeping rooms as well as the sitting rooms (very cool, see my photo). ACCOMMODATIONS: I wasn't expecting anything fancy. Since we stayed in the bank annex, it was nice to have a fridge and a microwave. The bathroom was great - spacious and clean. No AC but we survived. There was one major problem with our room - our door didn't lock. I can deal with everything else but this is really important. You have to have a locking door. We tried multiple times and even asked for another key. At night, we posted a chair against the door for peace of mind. So just make sure your room locks when you check in. DINING: There's a dining room but you're also welcome to eat at the bar. As expected, the food was pretty mediocre. Also as expected, the menu had very little to accommodate a vegan diet. I had fries and a salad. I knew all this going in so I'm not complaining. ENTERTAINMENT: Behind the bar, there's a back area with a pool table and some slot machines. LOCATION: While not quite a ghost town, Medicine Bow doesn't have much going on. I'd recommend walking around the back of the hotel as there is an old jail building that you can explore. STAFF: Friendly.

I booked a room at The Virginian Hotel in Medicine Bow for my partner, who is in the process of…read moremoving to Wyoming. Before arriving, my partner called the hotel, spoke with the front desk, and made specific arrangements for a late check-in. Based on that conversation, we reasonably believed there would be someone available or a process in place when they arrived. That did not happen. When my partner arrived, they called the contact/person associated with the late check-in multiple times. Every call went to voicemail, and no one responded. There was no one available to help, no follow-up, and no way to access the room that had been booked. As a result, my partner was forced to sleep in their car. I then contacted Expedia to try to resolve the issue, and Expedia was also unable to reach the hotel or hotel staff. That makes the situation even more concerning. This was not a minor inconvenience or a simple miscommunication. The hotel took a reservation, confirmed late-arrival arrangements, and then completely failed to provide access to the room or respond when help was needed. I do not know what is going on with the management or staffing at this property, but this was unacceptable. Leaving a guest stranded overnight after prior arrangements were made is a serious failure of basic hospitality and customer service. At this point, because neither we nor Expedia have been able to get a response from the hotel, I will be pursuing a refund through Expedia and, if necessary, disputing the charge with my bank. I would strongly caution anyone considering staying here, especially if you need a late check-in or are traveling through a rural area where backup lodging options may be limited.

The hotel is nice inside with a dining area, seating area, and small market. Of course, the hotel practices social distance and follows other Covid-19 safeguards. Masks are required at all times when on property. This hotel is conveniently located near many restaurants and shops. There's a car dealership across the street and on days that I was too tired to drive anywhere for a meal, I found so many cool places to eat in the neighboring parking lot within walking distance. I had a standard room and it was clean and modern-looking. I had no complaints about it. Due to Covid, they don't offer daily housekeeping. If you want service, you have to request it. There is a restaurant inside the hotel and it serves breakfast and dinner. Everything is cook-to-order now due to Covid of course. I like to get the omelettes. They were very tasty and the hash browns were crispy and not soggy like some restaurants. Dinner here is really, really good. I had dinner 3 times this week because of the snowy weather. I ordered the steak on one night, and the shrimp pasta twice. If you happen to be here during the week that they serve beef minestrone soup, do yourself a favor and order it. OMG, it was so yummy. The Creme brûlée and flourless chocolate cake were awesome. If you are in town, stay here.
