Hey guys, I'm a type 1 diabetic and almost died while also not being being able to finish this "experience", let me tell you how bad it started and how bad it ended...... While visiting Boone, we made reservations the day before for like 16 people and they said that would work. Our time was for 1 pm and then we later found out it was moved to 1:30pm (fine, no promblemo). We then got there promptly at 1:20pm only to not find a parking spot. So we had to get creative and almost kill our car trying to park somewhere we thought was safe then BOOM there is a large hole unknown to the common eye. But hey we got a spot. So now we're checking in, and that's going okay, I guess. After we checked in, we had to wait so much that they gave us free unlimited tubbing, nice recovery. With other people getting in the water ahead of along with no reservation, we sat waiting for our turn. Our turn comes at almost 4 pm. We got our canoes, and set sail. Me and my uncle were in a canoe together have a decent time in the back of the pack. Of course paddling our canoe took a tool on me and my diabetes, had a low blood sugar. That's fine I had my materials took glucose tabs. Now in my mind and from what I heard this would take more that like 3 hours, so I packed according. ( also neither me or my uncle had a phone for this) the water had a lot of shallow spots where we might've had to go out and push or put more effort to paddle our way through and after about an hour or two my canoe and my moms and grandpas were in dead last, not really even close to half way point. Hope you're still reading my traumatic time. So me and my uncle would take turns on who got out an pushed, such a hassle, but it gave us time to think. Both me and him made the mistake of wearing flip flops (our fault here) so those broke fast. Coming up at like 3 or 4 hours ( idek, I lost track of all time at this point) I was feeling a low blood sugar coming on, woah now I'm about out and might not be able to treat another low. It was either getting dark or already dark, we were over it at the point. Coming up we see me mom and grandpa had capsized their canoe ( they obvi did this themselves) so we come to the rescue and help their canoe drain of water with our strong arms. Well actually I just watched and used this problem to steal my moms phone (smart on my part). I captured a few moments but sadly her phone was at like 20%. There canoe was back in action and they passed us again. More time passes, we want out. We lost the rest of our group. We're tired, done, and famished. Rut roo, I feel another low blood sugar and now I have to take half the normal amount Bc that's all that I had left and I also had to eat my sacred risekrispy, just so I would not pass out and DIE. At this point I am using my mothers phone to communicate with my dad who already finished somehow. Oh and there is awful connection out there ( not sure why it would be good) so he's telling me to look for these landmarks I have yet to see. Telling him my blood sugar is feeling like it's dropping. At this point I want to say it's ab 9pm, almost pitch black and a phone that has been alive and dead for a bit. Now me and my uncle make the executive decision to park our canoe and try to get a ride back from one of the houses ( we looked at a map and we were maybe a good hour from the half way point) we had to climb a hill that was muddy and gross, I wore the flip flops I stole from my mom and gave my uncle one of my good flops and we were off in the woods. Walked a bit and found a house with lights on and asked him to take us back. He did. And while taking us back telling us how it's happened before, more than once!!!! We got back to our spot at about 10:30pm ( we were at this joint for 9 hours ) and everyone was waiting. Incoming hug from mother, and her getting into her purse which had extra sugar for me. Very traumatizing. Never got any kind of refund. Sorry this was so long, just hope you never go here. read more

Also during the tubing trip we came up to a bridge that was nearly in the water and we had to get out If the water with help in then directed onto the other side of the river. We had so MUCH fun rafting the Nolichucky River. The day trip was Perfect amount of time. The river is a wonderful nature area.

I was very disappointed with my experience. I called the day before went and asked about getting in and out of the water on the tubing trip because of my mother who has a bad hip and was told it was very easy to get in and out of the river. That much was true however, they failed to mention that you have to traverse a bridge that has no way of getting on or off the bridge without climbing or jumping. I asked about cancelling the trip because it was supposed to be bad weather the next day but I wanted to at least have a reservation and was told when I booked the trip if the weather was bad I could call back the next day and cancel for a refund. I called the next morning to cancel because the weather was calling for a 60% chance of thunderstorms at 1pm and was the percentage progressively got worse as the day got laterand our trip was at 2pm.When I called I was told that they do not give refunds only credits towards future trips. I was also told that normally the tube trip is about 2.5-3 hours but because the water level was higher than normal it would be closer to a 2 hour trip. Our trip only took 75 minutes and that was after 20 minutes of me and my brother helping our mother, wives and kids trying to make it over a really bad obstacle ( the bridge). When we got back to Wahoos and I asked why we weren't informed about the bridge when I called the day before and explained my mothers condition all I got was: I will make sure we let other customers know. I didn't even receive a: Hey sorry about that, someone should've let you know. Best experience ever!!! First we were greeted by the kindest check-in lady, Lilly. She was very sweet and caring to me and my families. So we decided to go on kayaking and tubing after. It was a beautiful day on sunday and we couldn't be much happier to go on the river. The worker there are also nice and friendly. I flipped over twice on the kayak and ended up breaking my phone. It was a lesson learned for me, thought that my phone was a water resistant. I wasn't feel upset because we had a lot of fun and laughter. The rapid wasn't bad for kids and it wasn't deep. We booked a last minute tubing trip for a 3pm slot. The receptionist was very friendly and so was the staff. We arrived to the area and unfortunately it was drizzling so just a heads up they can credit you to visit another time or you can still tube-- as long as there is not lighting. We went ahead with the light rain and tubed down the river for approximately 1.5 hours (they say 2.5 hours) and enjoyed the scenery. There were several times the water was very shallow and our tubes got stuck on the rocks but overall it was decent. read more

We prefer River Girl-much friendlier & a longer trip. Lady at check-in was extremely rude to our party & others, often shouting, acting as though we were making things difficult when she didn't seem to have paperwork in order, understand who had reservations & had prepaid, etc. When we arrived at launch, there weren't enough tubes, so we had to wait for the next van to arrive..which didn't have tubes..so we waited for another van to arrive & clamored for tubes along with the people on that van. The guides were helpful & apologetic. We even saw a guide offer to give a lady a tube since her personal tube had been stolen & they were using Wahoo..but the rude office lady told the guide "it isn't our problem ". Not sure what happened but heard several staff members complaining that the rude check-in lady "needs to stay in the office"! My husband and I did white water rafting with our 4 boys, ages 5, 5, 8, and 9. Sam was our guide and we had a blast. It was a pretty easy level 3 ride down the Watauga River, but perfect for our first time rafters. Sam was funny, informative, and great with the boys. The ride to the ramp was short, the restrooms/showers were nice enough, and the equipment was good quality. We would definitely recommend them and we'll use them again for a different adventure if we're in the area again! read more

The river staff are amazing and make this place what it is. Kris and Matt are exceptional and run an excellent show and you can tell the employees love to work for/with/beside them. I have to take away 2 stars because of the owners wife who I despise dealing with. She's honestly enough to keep me away from this place but we had to come because they were the only ones with camping in the area. To begin with she has a snotty attitude every time I've dealt with her on the phone and now apparently they charge your card without asking?!?!?!?! I would assume that has to be illegal on some level I'll check with my bank Monday and see. We booked 2 tubes and a camping spot and I did not realize that it is per person for camping not per site so I get a call from the owners wife saying she tried to charge my card for another person camping but it didn't go through. She never once called and asked me to charge it or if this was OK or if even 2 people we're camping she just attempted charging my card with no permission. My suggestion for Wahoo's is to keep her off the phones and away from the customers and let Kris and Matt do what they do best! In all the years we've been I've never seen it run as smooth as yesterday and I've never seen that many people there. The river staff are the back bone of this place and if Wahoo's wants to do good the owners need to realize this and let their stars shine! They answer the phone with "How can we make you wet? ". Not very classy, in my humble opinion. We were deeply disappointed that the Watauga River had such low water levels, that it really could be called a creek, yet no one informed us of that before setting us loose. Everyone, except the small children, got stuck on the rocks constantly that we had to get up and carry our tube to keep up with the kids. After falling several times on the wet rocks and then being struck by a kayak, I climbed out and walked back. The greeting should have been enough to deter us from going, but lesson is learned. read more

I reserved two tubes for my girlfriend and I on 9/9/17. We drove nearly 2 hours which would normally be worth it for this kind of experience. When we got there we we only had to wait about 15 minutes before they drove us 2 miles up the mountain to the drop off spot on the river. When we got out Jimmy suggested we didn't wear our shoes we had on and kindly offered to take them back. After being in the expectedly cold water for about 20minutes of the 1-3 hour float, my girlfriend realized that her tube was not inflated anymore. We climbed out of the river and called Wahoo Adventures (luckily we brought our phones). We notified them that we noticed a small hole in the tube. They told us they would have someone come pick us up on the side of the road. Barefoot on the side of the road I carried both of our tubes while waiting to spot a van. After about 1/4-1/2 miles walked, we were getting frustrated. Finally, a van pulled up asking if we wanted them to take us back to Wahoo Adventures. (This wasn't even the ride they claimed they sent out). After a 5 minute drive back, we pulled up and noticed THEY HAVENT EVEN LEFT TO COME PICK US UP. One of the gentlemen looked at us and said "Hey I was about to come get you guys". Nearly 30 minutes later? They did offer to take us back to the top however I was very frustrated with the service. We kindly passed on the offer. I went upstairs to speak with the women who checked us in to talk about possibly getting a refund or talking to an owner but the door was locked, lights were off, and no one was in there (during operating hours). I figured I'd wait and just call once I got home. When I called, Jeff the OWNER of the company answered. When I kindly explained what happened he got defensive. He told me that the tube deflating was a "fluke" because the tubes were newer (The men that helped me saw the tube and apologized earlier). He accused me of lying about it deflating because the water was cold. I expect the water to be cold so that had nothing to do with why I was upset. Every time I tried talking Jeff would raise his voice and cut me off from talking, RUDE. When I said I did not feel like I had a good experience he replied "We drove you up to the drop off spot, let you go out on the river, and came to pick you up when your tube deflated. You got your $40 worth." Refused to give me a refund. After yelling at me over the phone he offered to let me come back and go down on the "premium tubes" without charging me the extra $5. Wow thanks. I said I did not want to come back after that and only wanted a refund. His response was"F*ck you!" Then he hung up. At this point I was shaking from being so mad. About an hour later he called me again. This time he was a bit more calm, at least in the beginning. When I refused to come back he repeated he would not refund me because he thinks I got my money's worth. I told him that I would have came back another time if the customer service was not so bad. They got my money and treated me like crap after that. On top of everything, he claimed he sent me an email with a free pass for next time. Never got it. I work in customer service. I have never seen an owner treat a customer so poorly in my life. I do not like complaining and honestly, if I got a refund I would not be on here right now. However, I would like to prevent this from happening to any of you who may be looking for an experience like this. I highly suggest that you search elsewhere. Jeff's customer service was completely unacceptable and to me, shows a lot about him and his company. Stay away from them! read more

Wahoo's Adventures - Rafting/Kayaking Near Me - Todd, North Carolina

Whaoo's provides a solid canoeing/tubing experience (did not go white water rafting). The younger folks who staff the counter and provide the shuttle service are exceptional and committed to providing great service. The older folks (who appear to be in charge) seem like money grubbers. Sorry, I hate to say that, but a two-year-old sitting in a canoe between paying adults should ride free of charge. Stay away from company! Just they way the idiot answers the phone....I'm assuming the owner, "thank you for calling Wahoo's how can we get your pants wet?" Ummm....okay? Weird. Then I try to inquire about a reservation I made and they cannot even find it yet I gave them my credit card info to hold the res! I do not trust these unprofessional people. To make matters even worse, they want $70 just for myself, my husband and my daughter to rent ONE canoe!! Unbelievable! They do not even have fire pits and the lady says "you can eat at our restaurant" of course you would say that lady but that defeats the purpose of camping, DUH. I'll take my business else were. Staff are either not honest or misinformed. They told me inaccurate information on multiple occassions, especially the owner Jeff. And they are NOT following their own covid 19 safety policies as outlined on their website, and as told to me by staff. They are not transporting parties separately, we were all transported on 1 bus to go to the river. And river guides don't wear masks on the river. Also, be aware the trip length. We arrived at 3:30pm and stepped out of the river at 5:10pm. 1 hour 40 minutes including all their instructions and transportation to the river. Less than an hour on the river, not the 2-3 hours they tell you. They no longer let you jump off the rock into the river, as pictured on their website. Also beware the advertised Blue Hole Falls, just down the road according to owner Jeff. Its actually 8 miles down the road, a good 15 minutes drive. Pretty, but crowded. And don't believe what he tells you about the distance from where you are to his outpost on the river. He was wrong by half an hour. Honestly, the raft trip was a nice quiet float trip. Rapids very small. Our own guide said the class 3 rapid was really class 2. Fun to jump in the river, but very cold. If you want a short, quiet float down the river, this is it. Just don't believe anything the staff tells you about any part of the trip. I would rate the trip itself a 2 or 3, but gave the over all experience a 1 because of the number of times I was lied to. read more

Went on a busy Saturday, had 1:30 reservations for 4 premium tubes plus tubes for coolers. Didn't get on the river until 3 after having to check in with the guides several times, had to wait in a hot van for 20 min, there weren't enough cooler tubes when we got there, pathetic pieces of string to tie the tubes together, two of our tubes were almost out of air by the end. Beautiful spot on the river, one very low bridge with deep water under everyone had to walk under or around. Would pick High Mountain Expeditions next time...looks more organized, nicer tubes, decent plastic rope. read more

I never experienced the "experience" of WWR with these guys, but the customer service is kind of inconsistant. My family wanted to book a WWR tour with them, we went, but my father was getting sick-and we told them ahead of time-he may not be able to go, and we couldn't leave him in the cabin by himself. They told us they have a 24 hour cancellation policy, but because of him being sick, they would make an exception. We booked the event, because we all-including him wanted to go. Later that evening (around 7pm or so) we called them to tell them we unfortunately wouldn't be able to make it because he was feeling worse. I spoke to a different person than who we spoke to in person, and they said there is absolutely no exceptions for the cancellation policy and they would still charge our card. It was annoying as 4 hours prior they told us it wouldn't be a problem. He pretty much said the lady was wrong to say that "IF" she said that.. I remembered the female's name at the time and told him she said it wouldn't be a problem, he said they have a policy they stick to and they'd have to call back. Well, she did call back about 20 minutes later saying it was cancelled and not to worry about being charged. I understand if they have a policy they have to adhere by, but if they are going to make exceptions for X or Y reason, make sure the employee s know about it, or notate the customers file. read more

I've been rafting a dozen of times and this by far was the worst rafting company I've ever encountered. When you call to book the reservation, do not believe a word Jeff says. He makes up prices, information, and expectations from the trip. They over-booked and crammed us onto a school bus like sardines, extremely unsafe as a lot of people had to stand in the walkway during the bus ride to the launch site. The life-jackets are extremely old and falling apart. Not only would I not go on this rafting trip again even if it was free, Wahoo Adventures is extremely unsafe and should be shut down by the state of North Carolina for the actions I witnessed and experienced. read more

We went to Wahoo's yesterday for the fourth year. We have always had a pleasurable experience even with hiccups such as waiting and floats not working properly (common issues with tubing companies). However, yesterday was a complete different scenario and we will not be going back and I would recommend anyone going to do your research before you go. We arrived at the location and there was no where to park. The man in the parking lot told us to park on the side of the road with the other cars. I felt uncomfortable doing this so I went in and talked to the girls upstairs. I asked if they always overbooked and she said it just depends on the times people arrive. They assured me it was okay to park the car on the side of the road as one of them had parked her car there also. I should have gone with my gut and not gone down the river but they say absolutely no refunds. We enjoyed our float down the river. However when we returned our car had been towed. My husband was very upset and a couple of the workers were not helpful. I tried to talk to a worker and she tried to say we should have followed the signs that said your car has to be off the road. I didn't see one sign that said that. Plus there isn't enough space to park on the side of the road and have all 4 tires off the road. I am very disappointed in the new ownership of this company and will not be going back. The employees SHOULD NOT tell people to park on the side of the road. They should NOT book so many people that they do not have enough parking. Sadly, I am out $277 for listening to their workers. read more

If you're ever near Erwin, TN, you need to plan a rafting trip with Wahoo's Adventures, Nolichucky Outpost. We had a blast on our 4-5 hour trip, complete with exciting class 3 & 4 rapids and a picnic lunch provided by Wahoo. A group of 7 of us ranging in ages from 6 - 37 went tubing with Wahoo. We had so much fun. It was relaxing and fun all at the same time. The staff took very good care of us and the main office is nice and clean. It even has a shower that you can rinse off in after tubing. We brought our own grill but they also have some on the property. I would do it again and I highly recommend it!!! read more

Worst customer service I've ever experienced. Tried to cancel a week before the trip due to weather, but was told to give it another week to check the weather. I did as requested, but a week later it was still to cold for us. I tried to cancel and was threatened with being charged half of the trip cost. The owner became threatening on the phone and completely disrespectful. I've never been spoken to in the manner I was by the owner of this company. I've never written a review, but felt compelled to warn others about the unprofessional of this vendor. I would NEVER use this company!!! After reading my review the owner called me and said "either remove your yelp review or I'll charge your card for the rafting trip" "Call me back today or I'll charge you again". The nice facilities and the convenience of being able to take out and leave once your trip is done is the only reason this is a two star and not one star review. We arrived on Tuesday morning, 7/5, at 09:45 for our 10:00 "reservation" for four of us to do the 4 hour kayak trip. At 10:15, the shuttle left with the first group of the day and we were informed that we'd have to wait for the next shuttle, even though there were no earlier "reservations" available, clearly someone else with a 10:00 reservation that arrives first has more of a reservation than I do. So when I politely asked the guy (around 10:25) how long it would be before we'd be able to set off, without skipping a beat he said "should be about 10 - 15 more minutes, we appreciate your patience, we only have one driver this morning." Clearly this guy has had to say this dozens and dozens of times, he never even hesitated. So my question is, why not SCHEDULE MORE DRIVERS??? So we finally hit the water and started paddling at 11:10, unacceptable considering our 10:00 "reservation." If you're looking for an amazing river, really nice facilities, and the convenience of being able to just hop in the car and roll out when the trip is over, but don't care at ALL about punctuality or the true meaning of a reservation, then this is the place for you. read more

Pros and cons. My husband and I rented a canoe for 12pm...the check in woman was very nice and so are the young men that do the shuttle vans. However, we didn't get picked up until we waited over 40 minutes...I think you need to be prepared to wait and it wouldn't be as irritating. The short river trip was very enjoyable and I would do the longer version in the future. They do need to get the timing down better for how they manage getting people to the starting points. We randomly chose Wahoos and had a great rafting trip. Our checkin was quick, we quickly geared up and got on the bus. Patrick was the leader and got us moving and to our adventure without a lot of wait time. Our rafting guides -Patrick and Burt-were very friendly, knowledgeable, care about our well being. The difficulty of the river was ok. The rapids were rated 1-4. Even the level 4 Rapids seemed mild. The overall trip was exciting but never challenging, the water temperatures were awesome and the lunch was filling. They even had PBJ for my child (wasn't sure when they listed deli lunch) I would have given 5 stars but there was a discussion as to whether or not my nephew age 6 should go due to safety reasons. The guides were really elusive as to whether or not there was a true danger. My sister decided he would go and the whole trip was mild he was never in danger. It would have been totally disappointing if he had not gone. They should really make a better judgment call for customers who have never experienced their trip and this would have eased the anxiety. The most unprofessional place! I was told over the phone a day before my reservation that the tubing was Located in Elizabethton TN. We drove 30 minutes to get there and when we got there they gentlemen who were there were extremely rude and then proceeded to tell me we were in the wrong place! That tubing is in NC and hour and 45 minutes from where we were. The guy in Elizabethton TN said this happens all the time and to call to get our refund! Called and the gentleman Cole or Colton on the phone was very professional and I was extremely upset I asked for the manager and he said he would call back! Jeff the director called and he was rude right off the bat! 1st told me they CANT refund the money because it was my fault that I was given the wrong information of location! Then he kept talking over me would not let me speak and kept calling me the WRONG name after correcting him 4x. Proceeded to tell me I could get a credit and go another time, that would work if I wasn't on Vacation and from FLORIDA! Then his other option was to let us go rafting in Elizabethton for an extra $41 per person after I had already paid the $125 in tubing - no thank you! He then got aggravated and aggressive over the phone towards me to the point I had to hang up.. Not 10 minutes later their scheduler called to confirm if we were still coming for our 12pm reservation and it's 2 pm! I would never and will never book anything with this company in the future and neither will my family! Up here on vacation to have a beautiful relaxing day ruined by a rude director of this company who continued to be passively aggressive over the phone and has horrible customer service! Just went rafting yesterday with my wife and 2 daughters. It was my 7 year old daughters first time and I was a little bit uneasy to say the least. Our guide was Bert and he was fantastic!! He interacted with her and really made the trip awesome! I highly recommend him and the company. read more

Not even worth 1 star., I typically only go out of my way to leave great reviews, but this place was exceptionally horrible. Inadequate parking, had to park a few of our cars on the street (on a very curvy road) Rude to us from the moment we stepped through the doorway. First, we were a group of 15; had reservations for 11:30, prepaid for all but two (and we didn't pay for the 3 year old or the 18 month old- since on our prior trip the young ones sat in a lap since they wouldn't sit still in their own float obviously.. And they didn't cost anything last time) So- first a lady tells us we MUST put my 18 month old child in her own float, which we all told her wasn't going to happen since there's no way she would be able to sit in her own float for 2 hours down without falling out. She first didn't charge the 3 year old to have a float then demanded we pay for the younger. First she said it would mess up the floats to have a kid in my lap because of weight or something ???? I weigh 115 and my kid weighs 20, please tell me 135 lbs won't ruin the float.. Then she said it was a liability to have her in my lap, but they sure didn't tell any kids to put on a life jacket? So, then she says of anyone doesn't have a wristband, they don't float.. So we paid for the 2 girls.. Whatever. I make a private joke to my aunt that when we go to Disney the kids are free and we laughed about it and the girl comes back and says "well go to Disney next time because my 4 year old doesn't get in free or discounted here" Sorry you have a job that doesn't value you. Then they couldn't find my aunt's reservation and were going to charge her card again, due to their piss-poor system they have going on. Again our appointment time was at 11:30 and we didn't get loaded on the bus until 1:30ish. The bus guide was great, the only nice person we actually encountered. We got in the river and I didn't get a raft for my kid and he didn't care. River was great until that dang bridge that's so low you have to get out of your float and maneuver your way through. As we're getting out of the river, there are about 30 floats right at the water way and that's where we dumped ours. Then someone ran down asking us to help pull them all up.. Uh no. You have tip jars EVERYWHERE. Like what do you want a tip for anyway.. Because of I'm carrying out floats all the way up when apparently no one else did then you obviously don't get tipped. And don't even get me started on the shower and bathroom situation. 2 toilets and 1 shower room that had nasty floors. When I got out the line was 15 people deep and had been waiting 30+ minutes. Long story short, next time we decide to go tubing, we have already found another place with 100x better reviews. read more

Had a great experience in the Wahoo Adventures. A total family must do. Kids had a blast jumping from the side of the rock.

We purchased Groupon for Todd, NC location and went tubing a week ago. The reservation process was easy and I received a follow up call to confirm my reservation. The check in was an easy process with Lily. Lily checked on us during our wait to see if there was anything she could help us with...very pleasant. We did have to wait about 30 minutes past our reservation time (12noon-busiest time) to be "put in" but the facility is nice and lots to do while waiting. Our driver, Bryson, was entertaining and insightful on our ride up. Wahoo's did charge my credit card for the trip but upon check in, they processed a credit for the difference since I upgraded my tubes. We went twice and the 2nd time the wait was less than 10 minutes. The "trip" down the river was about 1.5 hours on the day we went. We had a pleasant experience and will be visiting again soon! read more
