I come here often so I cannot really compare it to others as much. However, it is a hit or miss if you they have space for you to toss larger appliances like fridges. It is also a hit or miss to have their metal bin there. There have been multiple instances where I would drive from Mililani and get there only to be turned around cause all there bins are either full or not there (metal). I'd have to bring back the load. Kind of irritating. Sometimes I'd make the drive out to Waipahu Refuse. They seem to be more open. I want to make note that the Wahiawa one may be busier than most only because it's by Schofield. read more

I've been taking much of my refuse to the Waipahu site for a few years now. While the wait may be pretty long on the weekends or if you have to wait for them to bring an empty bin in and take away a full bin, I've always been able to drop stuff off here. With the cameras available now, you can get a better sense of its a good time to go, but seems like weekdays, there are much shorter lines. With the addition of taking E-waste the Waipahu site goes from 4 stars to 5 stars. Though it does get full every so often then the E-waste gets dumped in the rubbish bin. They probably need to empty the E-waste more often. I've been to the Keehi location by Middle Street, while it is more convenient for me at Keehi, it is very pungent, I feel for the workers there. I prefer the Waipahu site. read more

Their metal bin is always full but thems the breaks. On camera I'm assuming the point the signs to let the public know if some bins are full. Imagine me driving my hatchback with a car full of cardboard. The man at the front of the gate probably had a laugh to see me in my "mini truck" among all the big trucks full of waste. Everyone is trying to clean for the new years. I was on Winter Break so I just needed to wait to get rid of the mounds of cardboard from our many deliveries (Christmas and from a recent renovation). You'll probably have better luck going in the middle of the week vs. going on the weekend. Probably not a good idea either to go right when they open because sometimes the dumpsters are full from the day prior and need to be picked up. Basically, you can just test your luck when you go to the dump. Will you be in and out in 30 minutes, or 1+ hours? Who knows? Will you be successful in dumping your trash? Went for the first time on a Saturday after doing yard work for my fiancé's grandparents. Had loads of trash bags filled with grass and vines. All was fine until we were greeted by the rude attendant. It was our first time, so we were unsure of the process. We had pulled up and didn't know we were supposed to stop for him cause he was just sitting there, arms crossed, no body language stating that we should stop. When we reversed he kept dogging on us saying that it's our second time here already (even though we literally told him it's our first time hence why we didn't know what we were doing??). At first we thought it was just banter like most of us do, so we just laughed it off and said sorry that it's our first time coming here and that we didn't know. We were very respectful and just wanted to dump our trash bags. But he kept going telling us we don't know how to listen, that it's our second time coming here already, very condescending telling us "what did I tell you the first time?" Like sir what do you mean? It's best to come here on the weekdays but if you're going weekends, come early! I got here at 7 am (opening) and already had a couple cars waiting to dump. The website provides a list of prohibited items (http://www.opala.org/solid_waste/Drop_off_Centers_for_Refuse.html) However, the list really doesn't cover EVERYTHING that is prohibited. So my advice to you is to call ahead of time. We drove 300+ lbs of bathroom tile (non-commercial) down to Waipahu and come to find out, they don't accept it. You gotta go to a landfill. Closest one is the by Koolina called Waimanalo (but it's not in Waimanalo). Anyways, they accept anything that can burn cause they take the trash to H-Power. Although it is out of the way for us townees, we happen to be in the area helping a friend move out of their place. We needed to get rid of a couch since Goodwill was not willing to accept it because there was a hole which was super minor. So we needed to find a trash dump somewhere and we stumbled upon this place on yelp and thought we would give it a try. I've never heard of this place before but we went ahead and found the place. It was on a Sunday afternoon and to our surprise there was no one there as stated from other yelpers that it may be busy on weekends. I guess we got there at good timing as we were able to dump the unwanted couch in less than 5 minutes. There's 4 dump trash containers and the attendant will tell you which one to dump it in. I'll be sure to keep this place in mind the next time I do a massive spring cleaning. You can literally dump almost anything here. read more

It feels so uplifting to throw away unwanted things. And it even feels better when you get to throw it in the bins yourself. Just be careful to not fall in because it's not very safe. My bf and I did a mass clean up at my mom's house and we had a ton of things to throw away. These things included chairs, a bathtub, large piles of wood, broken tiles, hardened cement, etc. I've only visited this place twice and on our first visit, there was a long line. We waited about half an hour to dump our things. From what I remember, there were only four bins; one for tires, one for branches, and two for miscellaneous things. What, no reviews for the Waipahu Dump?! Whaaat?! I can't believe it. Seems like such a popular place, especially on the weekends. Am I the only yelper who comes here to dump rubbish?! Can't be... can it? We come here every few months or so when we're doing some serious, get down 'n dirty cleaning. It's free and sure, there are some restrictions -- like don't be bringing your paint here, okay? Don't want that going into our landfills and such. You can come up to 2x to dump your stuff in the same day. They stay open until about 6pm on the weekends, but if the trash bins fill up early, they'll close. There's always a line of about 5-6 cars, sometimes more. Expect a wait, no matter what. Hopefully your car's air conditioning is working well -- you're gonna want to keep your windows rolled up while you're waiting because the smell ain't so pleasant. Hey Ashley O....Im with you on this dump! DO NOT...I repeat DO NOT go on the weekends. If you go on the weekends, you'll probably be in a line of at least 15 trucks! Its not supposed to be for commercial companies dumping, but we all know they do! Its open daily but closes at 6pm. The limit is 2 loads per household. They will accept all your garbage, but obviously they wont take "common sense" items such as dead animals, poisons, rocks, chemicals, flammables, etc. I would give them more stars for being so convenient but some trucks go overboard and load up their trucks with so much stuff that it takes more than 10 minutes to unload. That is ridiculous to me cause they hold up the line like crazy! read more

It is what it is...a dump. It's very convenient for larger items or if you happen to forget to put your trash bin out. They'll also recycle your green waste as well. The attendant can be rude from time to time, but I chalk it up to the fact that he works at a dump. Just pay attention and listen to him and it'll be fine. On rare occasion the dumpsters will fill up and they'll close early, but that's very rare. Normally trucks pick up and replace the dumpsters throughout the day. read more

My work replaced a metal door and it's metal jam. I went to Reuse Hawaii and donated the door and keys but they wouldn't take the scrap metal from the Jam, so I went to a metal recycling place and they wouldn't take it! Strike two! So then I went to Kiehee transfer station in Mapunapuna and they wouldn't take it! So I had to go all the way to Waipahu Refuse Convenience Center and it was no problem! They are the only ones that take scrap metal! Another cool thing is that they are open on Saturdays till 6pm! If you have scrap metal anisette aluminum or copper don't waste your time just go straight to Waipahu Refuse Convenience Center! They also take broken appliances and green clippings. read more

We needed to get rid of a fire extinguisher and found out there's not many places that accept them. After looking on the internet and asking around, we found out on Opala.org, that they allow disposal of fire extinguishers at any of the refuse centers on island, thus we go to the Waipahu one and sit in the line to drop it off. Finally after maybe 20 mins we reached the attendant and informed uncle that we just wanted to dispose of our old fire extinguisher. He just said "we don't except those..." ok, well it says otherwise on the internet. I know that one should trust the internet and maybe uncle knew better than me. Well turns out we tried again at the Wahiawa refuse center and there was no line and the uncle there said "shoots, just put em by the propane tanks and have a great day!" From now on, we'll go straight to the Wahiawa one to #1 avoid the line and #2 deal with a more informative attendant. The state really needs to get new attendants, these guys don't know how to manage the place, only one to two cars at a time! Wth! People don't need to wait in a half mile line just to throw away trash, might as well bring a picnic table and some food while you wait! People always driving on the left lane.
