In November 2025, I prepaid several thousand dollars for PRP injections, but after surgery the plan changed and the doctor agreed a refund was owed for injections not received. This was never disputed. Despite that, it took about six months of repeated calls, emails, and office visits to receive the refund. I was told multiple times that the refund had been processed or mailed when it had not. I am sharing this so patients can be aware of the refund process before paying large amounts upfront. Although the Dr. blamed a bad billing company, I was always interacting with his office staff who were clearly communicating with him.

Here's the timeline. Wednesday: Foot fractured. Foot is dangling. It's bedtime and I'm old. Cut to 2:00am ER visit: I'm told to elevate for 24 hours, take Tylenol (not Advil...apparently Advil doesn't help bones heal, who knew. ) Then I was told to "call ortho." And they gave me Dr. Black as a referral. But, who doesn't love lying around with their foot dangling while their toes slowly transform into Vienna sausages? All the little piggies were absolutely not going to market tho...not on my watch. And there's nothing better than having your feet above your head ...so elevated rest and panic I did. What they don't mention is that even doctors have a work-life balance (as they should). So I spent the rest of the week and weekend marinating in swelling, fear, and Google searches until Monday, when calls were finally returned to schedule consults. Tuesday: I meet Dr. Black. Within minutes, she calmly confirmed all the things the ER didn't tell me (slash I didn't ask because it was 2am, I was in shock, and I just wanted to go home). Reality hit. Hard. I'll be honest--I was shopping around. Some doctors looked exhausted. Some looked like they were 12. Some couldn't or wouldn't take me. Some offices failed the receptionist vibe check (details matter). Dr. Black (and team) passed all of it. She was sharp, present, and human. I respected her immediately. By the end of the consult--a full week after my nephew chose chaos and my ankle doubled down--she confirmed I needed surgery. And then... I pulled out my list. Twenty-three questions. Yes, I counted. Yes, I gathered them from ChatGPT after I put everything in my Patient Portal from the ER and asked Chat to give me a list of questions I wouldn't know to ask about and questions their peers would ask too. No, she did not flinch. She answered every single one--clearly, patiently, without rushing me, without talking down to me, and without that tired, quota-driven energy you sometimes get in medical offices (no shade, it is a business). I cried during the Q&A. Not a full sob--but definitely more than a single dignified tear. (Also, shoutout to the movie Boys Don't Cry... respectfully, they're wrong.) It had been a full week of "hurry up and wait," and it finally caught up to me. Then she scheduled surgery for the very next day. Wednesday: Surgery day at Castle. I'm sitting there waiting for my knifing (jk), and Dr. Black comes in to check on me. Even then--even then--she made time to ask if I had any last-minute questions. I did. Of course I did. But it was more for post surgery. I asked about PEMF mats ( ChatGPT again asked me to look into it and ask her)...She gave me an honest answer: it couldn't hurt, there are studies, but she didn't have a fully formed opinion yet. That kind of grounded honesty matters to me. The surgery itself? About an hour long, yet somehow felt like a one-night stand where I woke up disoriented and immediately had to do the walk of shame. Shout-out to the whole surgical team: * the cute doctor who gave me a nerve block (while my ass was fully out because he asked me to flip over--sir, have you been watching Heated Rivalry because I'm obedient and blushing, call me Shane Hollander. * the nurses who asked me the same questions approximately 97 times...ONLY THE LEFT FOOT ANKLE (nurses were a little less impressed with me but I digress) * the moment I woke up to liquids being forced down my throat before being gently but firmly kicked out like, "Okay, you're alive, a hui ho. Malama your mama." All jokes aside: I trusted Dr. Black with a complicated foot with multiple issues surgery, and I'm a patient with a very anxious attachment style. She earned my trust completely. Skilled, direct, compassionate, and present when it counted--before surgery, during surgery, and in the moments where fear sneaks in. She's delightful and non fussy - not much of a hand holder...all things that spoke to me. Truly. If you need an orthopedic surgeon who listens, answers your questions (even the long list ones), respects your intelligence, and still has a soul--Dr. Brandee Black is it. 10/10. Today I went in for an electrodialysis test. Dr. Hsieh(pronounced shay) is very personable, genuinely cares for you as his patient. He is patient and a good, kind doctor. I drove him to the west ER where he was recommended to see Dr Morris Mitsunaga. We were told he was one of the best MD in town. We made an appointment for Tuesday (2 days after seen at the ER which was huge plus..Doctors these days are hard to get an appt with) and he was straight forward. As he reviewed CT/Xrays we were told my husband case was severe, and if surgery does not happen soon then he could be paralyzed especially because my husband was losing feeling on all his left side on body (hands down to his leg). We immediately scheduled for a procedure and was given a date/time of surgery a few days after. My husband was was explained that he was to do a C4-5, C5-6, C6-7 Decompression & Anterior Cervical Discectomy & Fusion. His staff had told us that authorization frm his insurance was approved and everything was ready to go. His surgery was moved up a week earlier (another huge plus). Dr Morris always was straight to the point and said he may or not get feelings back which crushed our world. We could only pray and hope for the best. Day of procedure: We checked in Kinau surgery center. My son and I was able to come in back with him while he was getting prepped for surgery up until it was time. He was in the operating room for about 4-5 hrs (as Dr Mitsunaga explained). Once it was done, he came out and looked for us in the waiting room. He came out and shook my hand and updated us with how things went. When i heard him say "everything went successful" it was a huge relief. We were able to see him shortly after in the recovering room. Dr Mitsunaga said he may or may not have appetite and hoarseness due to approach of surgery (anterior), but it all depends on the patient. To my surprise, he was up, making jokes with the nurses, and asking to eat. He was alittle groggy but i could tell Dr Mitsunaga did a great job! We stayed IP for about 2 days and had to do f/up, PT, etc. Fast foward to 3 months later... My husband is walking and ALL feelings came back to normal. He is back to work FT and more happy than ever. He is pain relief and we owe it to Dr Mitsunaga. My family and I could not be more thankful for what he has done. If you watch him looking over a MRI image or something like that, you feel you're looking at a fish in water. He just feels it. It's like watching a really good pro athlete making something extremely challenging look easy. He is also a truly kind person with a unique sense of humor that makes you feel human. It's always fun to see him and I would trust him with my life.

I was seeing another neurologist, but I was not happy with his treatment to say the least his personality. A good dr will welcome you into the exam room, sit down with you and ask you questions about your health, concerns, exam you, discuss the best possible treatment option and spend time with the patient. Dr Liu does just that. He has a very calm demeanor and doesn't get excited. He is very thorough with his exam and explanation unlike my previous dr. The wait is long sometimes, but it's always worth my time.

My first appointment started with professional, empathetic, and helpful front desk staff. What followed was a doctor that spoke to me with minimal eye contact or concern. He spoke to me while staring at his computer screen while dismissing my description of my pain and inability perform simple activities of daily living. My follow up appointment following an MRI was worse. He stated that the MRI does not show tears or damage so his conclusion was 1. I have no "real" pain and it's made up in my head. 2. I just have low tolerance for pain. 3. I am seeking pain medications. I did not ask for, nor do I want any medications that will alter my ability to improve my everyday life. I do not want narcotic medications. All I was seeking was relief for an issue that is disrupting my life. I asked him what could be causing my pain and how I can improve the issue. He said "I don't know, there is nothing else to do". I asked him about PT and he said "You'll just waste their time". He told me "some people can get stabbed with a knife and feel no pain and some people can get a scratch and it's the worst pain they ever felt". He wrote me a prescription for steroids and gave no other advice for relief. I asked "What happens if the steroids do not work?" He said "I don't know" and walked out of the room. Needless to say, I left the office feeling worse than when I walked in.
