I travel a lot for work and have had various experiences being a "drop in", but I cannot say enough good things about the academy, the people who train here, and Professor Ken. Sensei Thompson's reputation among other martial artists in the country and the world is incredible. He is featured in martial arts books and I've even seen high-ranking martial artists ask for his autograph. When I mention that Sensei Thompson is my Sensei when visiting other dojos, I'm met with looks of admiration and am welcomed as an honored guest. The other instructors at the school are also highly-respected members of the martial arts community. I should note here, he is a humble man and this attention is not something he seeks (this humility is also a good indicator of a reputable martial arts instructor). One of the ways you call tell a good karate martial arts school is by the number of high-ranking adults at the school and how long they've trained there. At this school, there is the largest concentration of high-ranking adults that I've ever seen. And many of them have been training for over 20 years. This says a lot; they've also had the opportunity to travel and visit other dojos and yet they keep coming back here. Finally, as a petite female, I greatly appreciate the emphasis on real-life, applicable self-defense. So many dojos I've visited focus on competitions and getting promotions in rank as fast as possible and the students that go through these schools don't have actual self-defense skills. While I have progressed in rank at a steady pace here, the ability to confidently defend myself has been the true benefit. I've had friends and coworkers comment how calm and confident I am in a variety of very tense situations and I always say that it's because of the skills I've learned at this dojo.

My son has been…read moreattending since he was 5 years old (now 7), and he has benefitted from this instruction and discipline so much. He loves it too. He is proud of his progress (he has progressed to an Orange belt so far), and he likes to show what he knows and feels good at. Master Brown is a great instructor for him as well. My son needs a patient person, but also consistent high expectations with praise and consequences in the mix; he gets this every time from Master and Mrs Brown. As a parent, I like all the options for attending class, as well as the fact there are often teens and adults also in class that give my son additional role models. Additionally, they've continued to provide Zoom / FB Live classes during the COVID-19 closures which has been critical in our home to providing some normality for him. The male instructors ask to touch you before touching you and always approach from where you can see if possible. That may or may not change as they get to know you. Many Hours: Other things of note... Their website says they are only open M-W & Friday but they are basically there training 7 days a week so you should talk to Sifu Starling about the schedule. Classes so far have not started exactly on time. Sometimes they run a bit early and sometimes a bit late. Knowledgeable & Honors Culture: Sifu Starling honors King Fu by displaying his lineage (Ip Man) on the walls, using much Cantonese in his teaching, and teaching about his lineage from his own Sifu up to Ip Man himself. A Family Man: Sifu Starling is a family guy. He has children of his own who are grown and who used to compete and he does very well with the children he trains. I have seen him with a 5 year old (or so) and up to a 12 year old (or so) and with adults. He is quite friendly but also professional. As his the Tai Chi Instructor, Tomas. Clean & Safe: Everything is very clean though they are working on the room leading in from the student entrance. There are two bathrooms and they are large and are meant for 1 person. Non-Discriminatory: The business owners do not discriminate. You can be male, female, young, old, thin, fit, obese, an individual of color, white, or otherwise as you are and they seem to be happy to have you. Overall a wonderful feel to the environment and the staff members are amazing. I highly recommend.
