I bought my first amp and guitar from Wally about 22 years ago. The guitar was a steal that still sounds great, and the amp is still kicking all these years later. Once another amp of mine stopped making sound, and I took it to him. He told me that it started up normally when he turned it on, and didn't charge me, which tells you a lot about his character. Most recently, I brought an amp that I'd bought overseas and asked him to swap out power transformers. He did it for me, and did an excellent job. I'm biased. I've been a customer of Wally's Guitar Garage since I was a kid. I'm 26 now and have never used another guitar shop for any work on my instruments. Incredible guy. Yeah he's got an attitude, but he's also a genius. Super cool intelligent dude with great information. He was my second ever guitar teacher and the man was all about making me into the musician I am today. Definitely one of the top authorities on understanding the eccentricities of guitar work, trade and musicianship in this area. I don't take any of my guitars to anyone else, and I love to check out the sweet gear that's in his salt-of-the-earth shop. Wally is one of the most honest people I know, and I appreciate both his opinion and knowledge. He's also instructed so many of the great players here in the music scene on tone and so many countless facets of guitar craft. It's a shame that people don't value his critiques however honest they are. When I purchase a new guitar, Wally is one of the first people to see it for one of his Lubbock famous set-ups (amongst the players at least). They are so legit, and they do not quit. I'm talking the most buttery-smooth action! The most valuable thing I learned from Wally was how to look at a guitar for purchase. Most guitars "are not worth putting strings on" because of their geometry - a phrase and buying advice he taught me. Even as a kid though, having been around him just a few times, he taught me how to properly examine the neck of a guitar to look for issues at 13. I'm of the opinion that if I can handle this man's attitude at 13, and learn from him, you can too. read more

Good repairs and setups, sure Wally is harsh, but he knows how to setup a guitar to get the best sound it is capable of producing.

So there's a couple guitar shops in this area and I saw some comments for them on yellow pages, but there's a lot of people who give perfectly good places bad reviews. I went here because it was the first one I saw and the owner was very pushy. I remembered one add that described the experience to a T, even the way he kept trying to get me to bring in my guitar so he could charge me for stringing and tuning it. Sure enough, it turns out this is the same place. With the variety of music stores around here, try somewhere else for your own sake. I'm definately not going back. read more

I had been playing for 40+ years when I met Wally. If you can get by his eccentricities, you'll find him quite knowledgeable and capable. The place is crummy and the owner is an ass. He talks down to his customers and thinks he is an authority on every instrument made. What really made me mad was how he said my disabilities should not dictate how I tuned or played my instrument. There are better choices in Lubbock for repairs and purchases. I can go around town and get abused for free. I can't think of a reason I should pay for it. The owner talks down to his customers, and in the space of about fifteen minutes he ridiculed my two favorite guitars, neither of which he had seen. i brought my amp in and asked for some help with a problem. BTW, this was an amp which had been recommended to my wife by the best guitar player in town. He told me it was cheap and basically worthless. Of course, he did try to sell me one of his guitars. i'm going to go down the street to the other guy. life is too short. read more

I had a great experience with Wally. He's an expert and know his S#*! He's always been cool to me. He set up and strung my guitar perfectly. Turn around time was a bit longer than I expected, but no big deal. He's been around the block a few times and is a walking guitar encyclopedia. He wasn't pushy with me. Highly recommended. I can't say that Wally's people skills are great, but as far as I've seen he's the best in town at what he does. Be prepared to hear that your guitar needs work, and maybe your technique as well. I don't care how much you think you know about music and guitars. Wally knows more and if he didn't you wouldn't be reading this review in the first place. In our area he's the only quality alternative to butt-kissing monopolies like Guitar Center so for goodness sake go make your guitar all it can be and learn something in the process. read more

Wally's the BEST. Case closed. No one else in Lubbock or even the of whole West Texas area knows their shit as good as he does. Eccentrics aside, don't go in to HIS business with an attitude thinking you know what you're doing, listen to his spiel and he will amaze will a scientific approach to proper guitar playing and music making. Well, I read the 2 reviews for Wally and want to stand up for the small independent professional. Wally is one of the most knowledgeable people I have ever been able to set down and visit with. What others perceive as arrogance is most likely related to their inability to communicate and understand at Wally's level. Wally has over 50 years experience at what he does. Looking at the 2 reviews, the combined ages of the reviewers barely covers his years of experience. Have you ever been able to talk to a doctor at his level and understand everything he says. And I don't mean to listen and nod your head, I mean to understand. Wally, if you will listen, seems to be quite willing to share his knowledge of instruments freely and explain it again if you struggle to understand. Personally, I'm thankful for the wisdom he has shared with me even if I have to go home and research what he says. If your looking for a beater guitar or amp, go to a box store. If your into understanding and growth in your music profession, you might give Wally a listen. Wally came across a little abrasive to me as well the first time I met him 5 years ago but I have come to realize, 50 plus years of experience at a minimum, bears listening to. read more
