Although its been open for about ten years, I'd only recently learned of Wildflower from an acquaintance. Its confines are currently dressed in soft, breathable garments and assuring color palates. (Periwinkle, charcoal, rose pink, nude, and flecks of colour amongst it all!) Its actually a breath of fresh air, and a different variety from other independent boutiques in the area. I was elated to discover the accumulation of Free People frocks, which is probably my favorite [semi] affordable brand of all time. The owner mentioned that they would be getting more in soon-- whoo hoo! The overall stock seems romantic, flowing, and of excellent taste. Cute tops, rich fabrics and cuts are here for the taking. I think its safe to say that Wildflower has Bohemian Romantic down. The owner of the shop offered me genuine conversation and an easy shopping experience. I was the only patron at the time, so we chatted as I browsed. There was no pressure, no facade-- just good conversation and a shop full of wonders. After much swooning and chit-chat, I know this is a boutique I can dig. Besides the clothes, there were also some pretty neat accessories. I'd say the owner of Wildflower has a great eye. The Long Version: Elsie's used to be in one of those colourful row homes along Queen St (it was at 1530 Queen St). That location was on multiple levels and was incredibly cramped. It had a bohemian feel and reminded me of all the vintage shops in Kensington Market (in Toronto) circa 1990s. I would go to that location every time I visited Halifax. On my most recent visit in September 2024, I went there to see the store was closed and all the colourful row homes along there had signs in the window warning of asbestos and only authorized personnel were allowed to enter. It looked like they were going to tear the buildings down for redevelopment. I was so disappointed, and took out my trusted phone to see when they closed. To my delight, I discovered they reopened on Grafton St and I immediately headed over. Their new location is inside the building that used to be St. Mary's School for Boys. It's much larger so the shop is actually spacious now and not cramped at all. The feel now is more contemporary consignment shop, similar to the ones in Westboro (in Ottawa) of the 2010s to present day. They have luxury brands now. I saw a Chanel purse for close to 10K. They had Gucci too. However, they have more accessible brands in the $40 range as well. I spoke with staff there and they told me they moved to this new location in April 2024. Upon stepping into Elsie's was like going into another world...brilliant silk scarves billowing in the breeze, a gorgeous array of colors, eye catching shoes including John Fluevog and Louboutin, and an eclectic mix of jewelry. Vintage mixed with modern, many clothes new with tags and lots of designer pieces including Hermès. Incredibly soft cashmere sweaters. Elsie's has something for everyone and is a treasure in Halifax. When you first enter the store you'll find yourself faced with tables and tables of adorable nick nacks and homewares to browse though - so many cute mugs and beautiful candles! One day I dream that my home will be filled with them. They've also got journals, books, even a kids gift section. Further back you'll find clothing - men's is on the upper level and women's on the lower. They've also got a killer jewellery section (which is where I've found myself most often drooling over the rings and earrings). I never look closely at the clothing because I don't want to tempt myself (out of my price range), but just glancing at the racks I and tell there are a lot of cute things that I hear are really great quality. From the little bit of browsing I've done the sizes are all pretty small...whomp whomp. In the men's section you'll find wallets, shave kits and some really fun socks in addition to the standard clothing fare. Don't miss out on the back section behind the men's clothing where the sale stuff is! They've always got a good selection of sale things. I really love the idea of shopping at Biscuit General, but unless it's some of the smaller items I just don't have the budget for it. It can get very pricey very quickly. Andrew and I perused the wracks, only to discover that inflation has taken hold of even the tiniest of thrift shops. Long sleeve cotton tees that once went for an irresistible $2.99 now wear tags demanding $4.99. I shall not participate! Okay, I probably will, but I don't want the Value Village fate of sky rocketing prices to be the new norm in used clothes shopping. I found a couple of pieces I so desired, but wasn't willing to cough up half a tenner for a simple shirt - call me cheap, but that's where I'm standing. The book / cassette / VHS area was pretty fun, with carts loaded with random junk and the odd treasure. In the end, no purchases were made, but a fun jaunt was had. I do like this location and endorse it as a reasonable place to shop. Just doesn't expect ample, libidinous deals from the days of yore.

It might just be the neat freak in me, but it really bugs me that there is ALWAYS at least one cart full of items to be shelved just hanging out outside their sorting doors, against a rack of clothing, blocking it all. Drives me crazy. I always think this place should have a larger selection of frames and paintings/ prints, but alas, they don't. All that to say, I don't usually venture to this little location unless I'm in the area.
