We drove on our road trip to Johnson City, Tennessee from our home near Winston-Salem. It was getting late so we noted the location and decided to stop on our return trip home when we anticipated we would have more time. We arrived in the early afternoon of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and after following the line of cars to the back parking lot, we were amazed to see how many people were there! The small front parking area was full and the much larger rear parking lot was almost full. We did not think it was possible that everyone was visiting the general store, partly because it looks much smaller from the outside. As we walked toward the rear porch entrance, there was a Boy Scout Troop making kettle corn with a large kettle, butter, sugar, salt and corn and stirring it with a big paddle. It smelled delicious and we knew we needed to buy some on our way back to the car. After entering the building, we could see the entire parking lot contained all those people inside the general store, it was very busy but it appeared they had an adequate amount of employees. Mast features outdoor gear, home decor, knives, shoes, clothing, gift related items and food. They also have a large barrel candy area. We picked up a few things we felt we could not live without. On our way out, we purchased a bag of the kettle corn from the Boy Scouts and enjoyed munching on it while also supporting a good cause. It was so delicious with the combination of butter and sugar. A definite treat that we hadn't eaten in a long time. The original store is a must stop if you are driving through the area. We also recommend stopping at any of their other locations as well. They have many items you may not find elsewhere.

Lots of old time kitchen utensils, ceramic cookware, kid's toys, hunting and outdoor wear. Then to the main hiking and hiking shoes for men where they had some which were 25% off. Jim, a clerk, came up as I was looking around and politely asked if he could help me find something in the Keen shoes I was poking through. Told that I was looking for an 11 1/2 size, but there were no half sizes. As sometimes shoes can run a bit large he asked if I wanted to try on an 11 and he would go look for an 11 1/2 if the 11 would not fit. I had just determined that the 11 wasn't for me, and Jim came back. Now you know how I came to purchase my Keen Targee IV WP MEN, size 11.5 at 25% off. Checking us out was another friendly, chatty and efficient employee (as all of their folks are) named Rhonda. Like I said, you "just gotta" visit, and maybe spend a few bucks. We did!

The biggest problem I saw is that the selection of beer sucks! I mean sucks. If you like your typical American golden pee beer like Bud and Coors, you're in luck. If you like a good flavorful dark beer, sorry, slim pickens. They also have a small selection of wines. The clothing in this store is typical for Walmart and again, not a bad selection. I am not a Walmart shopper when it comes to clothes but hey, they have them. If you are a Walmart shopper this store is pretty good. There are other grocery stores in the area that might have some items Walmart doesn't carry but this is the best place when looking at bang for your buck.

***100th Review***…read more Over the last week, I've been thinking long and hard about which establishment I want to dedicate my 100th review to. It's a meaningful milestone for me in the Yelp world and I want to choose wisely. I remember reading about the CEO of Yelp, Jeremy Stoppelman, who had the idea for Yelp, Inc initially when he had trouble finding a local doctor in 2004. It comes back to the idea of community, service and sharing and I decided to dedicate my review for this Target store in Bristol, VA. Now I've actually never been to this Target store and my dealing with them is purely by phone. However, they really touched my heart in an above and beyond way and here's how. Last week, the 3.1 Phillip Lim for Target line launched and I had totally forgotten since I was celebrating my best friend's birthday that day. 2 days later, when I realized that I had forgotten to place the orders for the items I wanted, the online inventory and stores were sparse and it was especially hard to find the one item I really wanted, their large black tote bag with gusset. I called around and went to the local Target stores all around me, none had it and I was quite bummed. I decided to branch out and check inventory elsewhere and came across this store. From the moment I spoke with a store employee I felt the lovely Southern hospitality. Christine, the store manager, was kind and helpful. She had a bag in stock but they were unable to take payment over the phone and I live thousands of miles away. I asked if they could ship it to my local store and she said that it isn't company policy but she can check and get back to me. 2 days later, Christine called me and said she'd be happy to ship the bag to my local store. She said she also emailed all the store managers in that store to make sure they will call me when they receive the bag so it's not accidentally put out on the floor. I was amazed! This level of customer service is really a step above the rest and I am thankful they went to so much trouble to make a customer happy. Thank you, Christine and the crew at Target Bristol! Hopefully one day, I'll be out there for a visit.

However, the customer service extends beyond wearing a piece of cloth that prohibits normal breathing. All of the employees are courteous, friendly, and professional. The manager of the store personally carries out items that are heavy. The kindness of this manager cannot be overstated. I was stung by a wasp outside the store and needed assistance. The manager kindly gave me first aid without thought of my face cover. I am so glad these type of businesses exist. I am always grateful for kindness and common sense.

The shelves are often 1/4 empty, the store often looks as if it just finished renovations when none have been done, the meat is the most expensive in town without higher quality and prepackaged snacks for my kids for school or camp lunches, are astronomically priced and very often crushed or shaken half-to-crumbles when I open them which hasn't been the case elsewhere. I have encountered a manager- she had trouble with Single Digit math and behaved in a hostile way when realizing she was incorrect. There are many other grocery options for such a small town thankfully, Food City being my favorite for helpful employees and great sales and daily prices!

I have been purchasing cigarettes from Ingles for several years, because they were cheaper. When I ask, they say they are on order. I have heard this remark for the last 5 times, once a week. This was really the one thing, that determined me to do my grocery shopping there. If they can't supply me with my cigarettes, I have no reason to go there and will need to shop somewhere else, for better prices.
