This spot was pretty good overall. The idea of Mac and cheese soup was probably one of the most unique approaches I've seen in a while. This family business is in a former Piiggly Wiggly. Cute and cozy run by three sisters, thus the name. Cloth napkins and eclectic tables welcome you. What an eclectic interesting place! Different tables &chairs, coffee ordering area, fun items for sale. I had the quiche of the day, ham&swiss, that came with a tiny fruit salad. The quiche was light and fluffy; my latte perfectly strong and very hot. They have amazing looking desserts, so I had the pecan pie...to die for! Hubby had the Lincoln sandwich on sourdough and said it was very good. We went out of our way to try this place because another reviewer said "it would be your loss" if you didn't. He was right. And BTW, it wasn't far off of 81 and was easy to get back on the highway. read more

Sisters Cafe & Gifts is a cute little cafe within a store. Mixed in with that deli/cafe is a store where there's clothes and small knick knacks. For this visit though, we came here to catch a quick brunch as we were driving up to Virginia for a wedding. The verdict? If it wasn't for the down to earth hospitality, and that this place and town is a small town restaurant, it was 3 stars for me. The hospitality and just kindness that was shown to us kind of put them into 3 star territory. But to be honest, the food was mediocre at best. Why? Well, I got the chipotle panini and the ingredients itself just didn't cut it. It reminded me of literally going to a grocery deli and buying the deli from bagged meats and then assembling it was just put it all together. I wouldn't say that they created it, but rather just assembled it. The panini was also drenched in the chipotle sauce, that I think came through from a store-bought sauce that came in a bottle. So yeah, let's say that the food is not Sister's forte. I think they take more pride in their desserts and coffee, which I only had a normal coffee and since it was Pi day, they kindly gave us samples of mini pies. The generosity and just the overall kindness was what got me. I recommend those who live nearby to definitely support this business, but at the same time I think Sister's can improve upon their cafe/sandwiches. If you come here for a brunch/sandwiches, don't expect the a hole in the wall gem. read more

What a gem in a small, remote part of southern Virginia. We stopped in here for lunch and you are immediately greeted by an eclectic array of wares: jewelry, pottery, local jams, and even a framing section. The menu has enough of a variety to suit any type of eater with sandwiches, wraps, paninis, and salads. The service is very friendly and pretty fast. I love that they have paper straws (not that I like paper straws but that they do not use plastic!). I ordered the caprese panini on multigrain bread which was excellent (you can also choose from sourdough or rye). It had lots of pesto, fresh tomatoes, and gooey mozzarella; the flavor was perfect and was the optimal level of crisp without being burnt or pressed too thinly. I opted for the pasta salad as a side and it was delicious and perfectly seasoned. We didn't have dessert but the case looked great. This is an awesome spot for a breakfast or lunch, and you can snag a gift or two, as well! I want to come back for the biscuit bar at breakfast (they have Nutella!). Be sure to check out the daily specials, too, which tend to sell out quickly. read more

But, perhaps we enjoyed the hospitality and quiet most. The sisters had plenty of other diners late on a Thursday afternoon, but took time to visit with us. If this was in a larger town/city, I would have given this place a 2 star. This place is large. It's both an eatery and a gift/clothes shop. It's a cute small town business. The paninis are pretty much deli meat on store bought bread and pressed. You can see in the kitchen if you sit in back. It looks like a home kitchen, which is pretty cool, but you also see all the grocery bread that is being used to make the paninis. The bread isn't even fresh!! The Chipotle chicken was just deli chicken doused in Chipotle sauce that came from a bottle. read more

What a hidden gem in the small town of Marion! I was convinced that there is no reason I'd want to visit here except to see my parents' workplaces...but Sister's has changed that for me! When you first walk in, the enormity of the cafe (with such a small storefront) is overwhelming; it just keeps going and going. On the right, the first display is a huge map allowing all guests to pin where they're from. People came from all over to pin on this map! They also were selling tons of local crafts along the sides and middle of the room, and really seemed to support small businesses. I love seeing a place like that. Now for the drinks- I ordered a pumpkin spice latte, because Starbucks isn't the only one who knows how to make one! And wow it was good. The relaxed atmosphere made it even better, with some of the workers casually coming up to us and asking us what we want to order. They even made a huge effort to find us in the store after they were finished making it, I really appreciated their time and work put into just a couple drinks. And the prices are not bad at all! I also bought a card that was on a 1$ sale rack, speaking of good prices. They have some more expensive items, but also do provide good deals. I was very impressed! I also picked up a cup of coffee and grabbed a bag of beans since they brew coffee from a local roaster. Oh, my! Where do I begin? I'm not usually a fan of biscuits, but these were so buttery, tender, and flaky. The eggs were fluffy, and the combination of the cheese and meat made it one of the best breakfast sandwiches I've ever had. The fresh brewed coffee was delicious, and the beans I brought home were even better: Dark Hollow Roasters Ethiopian Yirgachefe. Oh my goodness. I am so glad I was ravishing hungry and decided to eat what we could find in the next town that sounded like it might have a non-chain quality eatery. What a find. A small well kept town and a restaurant in the former Piggly Wiggly. It has been around for years, has new owners, but the quality is being maintained from my perspective. This downtown Marion mainstay is a restaurant, cafe, and gift shop in one. I can't speak for the food, but the coffee and service are top notch. My wife and I really enjoyed the cappuccino while perusing all the crafts and knickknacks they have for sale. It's also a good place to read a book in one of the comfortable couches that they have, although it does get loud at lunchtime. On an environmental note, I'm glad that they use paper straws. I really hope they stop using styrofoam and plastic at some point. read more
