All of those purchases where I am too lazy to zig zag back and forth at a bigger store, I can get here in a quarter of the time. My time matters. I can buy milk and snacks and beverages and bandaids. I can go in sick and not infest the world. These are all good things.

However, I'm sure that CVS keeps the student and staff population well prescribed and toiletried. Actually, maybe a should up the rating as they carry the Sunday New York Times! Starbucks stopped selling papers and I've come up empty at both big Hyvees in recent times, so seeing "All the News that's Fit to Print" smiling at me here was a real bonus. I've come in for other stuff too, mainly related to pain relief, allergy, shaving, dental, etc. You know, the usual that one would expect at CVS, Walgreen's, Rite Aid, etc. There also a nice small parking lot on the Welch Avenue side if you don't want to fight it on the street on Lincoln Way.

They stay open pretty late and have their own parking lot (for customers only, otherwise get ready to be towed!) so that's always a plus! The staff is nice and always willing to assist. Sometimes it seems like they're a bit understaffed, especially in the evenings. Nevertheless, a good store for your basic everyday needs.

They don't have the med, do you want a partial? So you have to come back in another 15 minutes and wait in another 15 minute line. So you've waited in 3 lines for 15 minutes each time. So you come back in a month to get the rest of your partial, its not ready, come back tomorrow. It takes 3 trips for 1 prescription. PLUS! They average between 5-7 minutes per customer at the window! Forget calling them, you can't get them on the phone.

You know, it's tough to appreciate a Super WalMart of the scale that it is in Ames when you are…read moreactually from the Midwest. Why? Well, in the Midwest, I have found, there is one on every corner. For that reason you have about another 10 locations (literally) within a 20 mile driving distance to compare it to. The fact that a small city like Ames (yes people, Ames is pretty small lol) can support two of these beasts is amazing. Coming originally from CA which, to my knowledge, have no Super WalMarts, this place was a godsend. Everything available in one place. Produce is usually pretty decent, and shelves are pretty well stocked. Do you get those special Wal Mart employees? You bet, but you get those at every Wal Mart. Cheap labor means cheaper prices, and the latter is why people come here. Having recently moved to MA, while there are super WalMarts, they don't hold a candle to this Ames (or really any other central IA) location. Dirty, poorly stocked, almost no employees around to help you. Honestly, you Ames folk don't know how stinking good you have it, and I mean that. The simple fact that you have a 24-hour store is awesome! Thank your lucky stars. You have one of the better Wal-Marts in the nation, even though you may not think it is one of the better locations in your area.

There's also this Drug Store, which looks to be part of a yet-to-be realized development initiative at and around the old Train Station. Gayle was at a Salon at the Train Station getting her nails done. After all, my fabulous wife must mind the beauty details! However, with the Iowa humidity, she would probably go for shorter hair if we actually lived here. Since this takes time, I decided to walk down Main Street and look around. After walking around the Train Station and admiring the architecture (and the safety fence near the tracks), I first wandered into Hy-Vee Drugstore and for some air conditioned relief. This place is a lot larger than it looks from the outside. They have a nice selection of the usual stuff, plus gifts and wine/beer. I ended up buying a padded wine holder to later (and successfully) take back a bottle of Templeton Rye Whiskey back to Iowa. I'll probably be back the next time I'm in town for any travel-related supplies or to just kill a little time.

There are employees constantly making sure everything stays that way. Unfortunately, because of the mass quantity of stock, the quality is sometimes overlooked; mainly in the produce section. The produce can be hit or miss whether or not it's gone bad and just hasn't been pulled or is good with a few "bad apples". The samples are definitely a nice touch while shopping and the employees handling them tend to know about the products, thankfully. Some employees seem to do everything they can to avoid being asked a question, while others go out of their way to help you, so service can be hit or miss as well. The food court is great! Lol. The low prices for the food are awesome and the food tastes great, so win-win there! Overall, this is a clean store with quite a bit to choose from, I just wish the fresh produce was better kept up with as well as the employee interactions.

Historically, their competitive gas prices were one of the primary factors that made recommending a membership to friends and family an easy decision. This shift became more noticeable when they transitioned from offering U87 to U88, yet pricing comparisons are often still made against U87 rates elsewhere in town. As a result, the perceived savings are less compelling. In fact, the gas station near my home is currently offering fuel at nearly the same price without requiring a membership, which further diminishes the value proposition.
