About the only strange thing was the kids play area, it was filled with young guys - mid to late teens, and about 8-10 of them. They seemed to be hanging out in there, and when we came near, they made no attempt to move. I hadn't planned to use the play area unless it was amazing (with a good slide, etc), but since it wasn't I wasn't too disappointed, but it was strange and there was really no room for anyone to go in and play with their children.

There's a now shuttered restaurant where my Sister had her rehearsal dinner and I sometimes passed Ames Surplus, which as it turns out has been folded into the 2-building complex that is called Jax Outdoor gear. The military surplus part of this store is not much more than a couple short aisles. Past that, Jax has loads of outdoor gear, fishing and hunting inventory, clothing, footwear, and even a corner for Boy and Girl scout supplies. It's all very high quality merchandise and a good value. I came in looking for some Carhartt pants, which they don't currently stock. I left very impressed and with a cool and nicely priced little Gerber knife. I found store staff to be friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. I'll be back in Ames in a few months (or so), and I'm be sure to stop in again. I'm sure there will be new stuff to admire or goods that I missed during the last visit. Wow! Talk about great customer service and a wonderful and special experience! This summer, my…read morefiancé surprised me with a stop at Ames Silversmithing to pick out my engagement ring! He arranged with them to have a private viewing so we were the only ones there that was really special and kind of them to do. Kyle Youngberg made the experience so fun and exciting! He worked with us to create the ring of my dreams. I knew nothing about diamonds but my fiancé had done some research and could talk to Kyle in diamond terms. They then helped teach me about all the wonders of diamonds. We looked at different diamonds under the microscope and in the sunlight to pick the perfect one! I had to get my ring re-sized after the proposal and they were so helpful once again when we went in to drop it off and pick it up. It only took two days to get it back! We looked under the microscope again so we could see its beauty again and to see the special numbers engraved on the side so we can always make sure we have our diamond. There are employees constantly making sure everything stays that way. Unfortunately, because of the mass quantity of stock, the quality is sometimes overlooked; mainly in the produce section. The produce can be hit or miss whether or not it's gone bad and just hasn't been pulled or is good with a few "bad apples". The samples are definitely a nice touch while shopping and the employees handling them tend to know about the products, thankfully. Some employees seem to do everything they can to avoid being asked a question, while others go out of their way to help you, so service can be hit or miss as well. The food court is great! Lol. The low prices for the food are awesome and the food tastes great, so win-win there! Overall, this is a clean store with quite a bit to choose from, I just wish the fresh produce was better kept up with as well as the employee interactions.

It's located inside of North Grand Mall. If you're from a metropolitan city then a good comparison would be to call it a small town Spencer's Gifts or Hot Topic, but it does seem to have higher quality and fairer prices than similar shops I've been to.
