The library in Logansport is part of the Cass County Public Library system. The building is…read morerelatively modern. The staff is remarkably helpful. I came to the library to learn details about the local courthouse. Scott, in the Reference section of the library, spent a great deal of time helping look up information in files and older local history books. He found most of the information that I needed. We also talked about the history of the library. He pointed me to a timeline on their Web site. Logansport has had a library since 1890. They've had several structures, including a limestone Carnegie funded structure. After a fire destroyed that structure in 1941, a newer structure was built. Renovations and additions over the years have led to the current library. The library has a nice reading room with a fireplace and lovely paintings by Hoosier artists. On the first floor is a children's area with a reading room that was filled with kids. There was a very small play area, but for the most part, books are the primary stars in this library. Lots of natural light enters the building. The reference area, pubic computers, and study areas are upstairs. The staff is friendly, helpful and dedicated. I left with maps and I formation and old photographs. There is dedicated parking lot on the east side on the building.

While I've occasionally had some mail delivery issues, most of the time I have been able to call…read morethis post office directly to get assistance, and they're friendly more often than not. I used to have new carriers all the time but have some fairly regular ones now. They even deliver packages on Sunday on occasion. One perk for sure of a small town post office such as this one is that there usually isn't a line. Even when there is, it often moves semi quickly. I have also been able to just drop large outgoing packages which already have postage on them printed online to an empty counter to the left instead of waiting in line. However, even in that case, if you're able to give them a couple minutes, they will gladly give you a receipt for your drop-off if you wait for one of the open counters. It's always clean in here. They have greeting cards, gift cards, padded envelopes, and mailing supplies available for sale. The always ask what type of stamps you prefer if you are purchasing books or sheets. While the counter area closes at 5 during the week, and I believe noon on Saturdays, the lobby is open 24/7 so that you can drop letters and smaller parcels in the indoor slots anytime or check your PO BOX if you happen to have one. My one real complaint is that the blue box outside around the corner of the building hasn't been reliable for me thus far. Everything I have dropped in that box either never made it to its destination or took a month. I just take everything inside now to be on the safe side. Tina is the best. It's always a pleasure when she's working the front counter or happens to be the one answering the phone. She's made pickup of my missed deliveries, etc. easy for me by having my mail waiting for me in a bundle at the front. This is definitely one of the better post offices I have ever used.

I was sent to their Historical Society which was fun but didn't have a very good resource for historical buildings in the area. SO they sent me to Central Library in Indpls. which was where I came from to begin with. They sent me back to Indpls and the Historical Society there opened my world up with Sanborn maps. They in turn sent me to the State Library and then found the name of the company I was looking for through addresses from the maps. After that Google had what I needed. I basically bought the state wide library card for no reason that year....

A pair of bronze statues portraying the pioneering auto builders, the Apperson Brothers, can be…read morefound near the spot of their former factory at the south entrance to Kokomo Municipal Stadium. Added in 2018, artist DJ Bawden created the pieces to commemorate the pairs contribution to Kokomo's history and commerce. Just before the beginning of the 20th Century, the brothers had started their own shop and were approached by Elwood Haynes to build his first car back in 1894 which is considered to be the first working car in America! They went on to form the Haynes-Apperson Company which continued making cars until the brothers left to pursue making a more upscale and powerful type vehicle in 1902. They were known for producing a car called the Jackrabbit. In 1911, the brothers entered a car in the 1st Indy 500. The auto manufacturers continued in Kokomo until 1926. Review #2476

The Carroll County Courthouse sits on a square in Delphi, which is the county seat. I like the simplicity of the Courthouse Square. At the southeast corner of the Square is a huge memorial honoring those that fought in the Civil War with the Courthouse behind. Small local businesses and restaurants surround the Square with most architecture original. This is the second courthouse in Delphi. The first courthouse (Victorian Style) was built in 1841 and served the community until 1917. A photo of the original courthouse hangs in the current courthouse. The current Neoclassical Courthouse was designed by the architects of Elmer E. Dunlap Co., Indianapolis. A. E. Kenner completed construction for the opening. The interior of the building is breathtaking. The center atrium is crowned by a magnificent stained glass dome. A beautiful mosaic tiled floor sits beneath the dome. Spiral marble staircases with decorative iron bannisters ascend to the second and third floors. Blue trim sets off the interior. Elmer did a fabulous job. Most of the building is original, including offices and the Circuit Courtroom. The bell from the first courthouse is on display in the lobby. A war honor roll is on the wall. Staff and people I met in the Courthouse were friendly and knowledgeable about the building. The Courthouse is fully operational. The local heath department was handing out free medical supplies. Court was in session. Clerks were available to take various payments. I think there is a museum in the basement, but I missed going down. There's plenty of free parking around the Square. This is a fabulous Courthouse, well worth the drive to Delphi.

I've visited numerous Veteran's Memorials around central Indiana and this is one of the most…read morebeautiful and reverential spots I have found. The site is well maintained and landscaped. There are numerous bricks with names on them and even a "station" that will help you find a specific name's location in the plaza. There are two main areas here. One features a single bronze statue called "The Clasping Hand" cast from John Chalk's original and dedicated at the park's opening in year 2000. The second and larger plaza has a standing soldier reaching out across the plaza to where a family reaches back towards him. It emphasizes the connection between loved ones separated by war/service. Overall, it is a beautiful plaza to celebrate the sacrifice of our veterans. Review #2321

The Howard County Courthouse sits on Courthouse Square in Kokomo, Indiana. The art deco building…read morewas designed by local architect, Oscar Cook, and retains most of its original grandeur. The building was dedicated October 20, 1937 after a fire destroyed the first courthouse during 1927. The building is constructed of limestone. Bronze relief likenesses of the founder of Kokomo, David Foster and inventor, Elwood Hayes cover the doors on the main entrance. Grand art deco light fixtures stand at the entrances to the building. Local Sheriff Deputies screen visitors prior to entry into the building. The deputies are friendly. This is very much a working courthouse, bustling with activity. The building is not really set up for tourists. But you can walk around. Photography is not allowed in certain rooms and areas. Art deco style war memorials holding the names of those that served stand directly inside the entry and around the foyer. Above the foyer is a beautiful rectangular stained glass window that runs the length of the building. There are three floors plus a basement that house county offices and courtrooms. The County Clerk, Circuit Court, Public Defender and Prosecutor Offices were among the offices. Offices are simple and functional without adornment. Incredible art deco features adorn the staircases and halls throughout the building. Being in the building was like stepping back in time. I loved it. The building was put on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. There are public restrooms in the basement. Parking is free around the square. The building is ADA accessible and has elevators inside. The square around the courthouse is interesting, too. There are few businesses, but the mix of architecture is beautiful. There are also several memorials surrounding the courthouse building including a Civil War memorial.

The Indiana Women's Legacy Memorial is the largest memorial in the state of Indiana that honors…read morewomen. The statue stands on the northeast corner of the courthouse square in Howard's County. Three bronze sculptures depicting women soldiers and a "Rosie Riveter-type" figure stand on pedestals. The words Honor, Duty and Faith are carved on the pedestals. A placard on the State of Indiana says "This memorial is dedicated to Hoosier Daughters for their time in service to our state and nation during war and peace. May their deeds not be forgotten." The memorial was designed by Jerry Paul, President of the Howard County Veteran's Memorial Corporation. The bronze sculptures were created by artist, Benjamin Matthew Victor. The memorial was dedicated on August 6, 2021. This memorial speaks to me because my mother served as an Air Force nurse. During my visit a number of other visitors took photos, posing with the figures. A nice park benches sit adjacent to the memorial and a lovely flower garden surrounds the area. There is plenty of free parking on the square and the memorial is ADA accessible.
