The shop itself though has just got better and better over the last few years and now is a really great general supermarket that has bargain prices and exotic products. There's more noodles than anyone could ever want to eat and rice, dried beans and condiments galore. The flavour pastes and fresh produce are my favourites here and there's also a smattering of foodstalls on one side that make Asian snacks; my favourite being the pancakes. I'm also partial to a bit of Plum Wine and this place has it, along with Asian beers etc. And I still just can't help but marvel over all the crazy dried funghi, fish innards and the like that are so foreign to me - I got to say it, these days Auckland has pretty much every curious food ingredient available which can only be a good thing.

I usually pop in to Fresh n Save to grab Chinese cooking ingredients such as rice cooking wine, soy sauce, noodles, rice, green veggies, tofu, and herbs. The price is very competitive with the large supermarkets close by, and you can be guaranteed saving a few pennies here for sure. Lots to see and find in terms of international flavour, and is always a delight to expand my Asian cooking skills with the products I discover at Fresh N Save. The two checkout counters are usually busy, but try to shop during off peak hours, and you shall find you won't have to wait long at all.

Unlike the small colony of Korean supermarkets on the North Shore, this Royal Save Mart packs a punch for the size of store and location. They have a very respectable selection of Korean (and some Japanese) imported dry goods, snacks, drinks and frozen foods. They offer a range of frozen Korean style meat cuts from a butcher on the Shore and also carry a range of Kimchi both imported from Korea as well as some locally made stuff. Now you may be thinking that the local stuff is fresher and should taste better. However, as Kimchi is fermented cabbage this is a bit irrelevant and the more important factor is the use of Korean chiles and fish sauce (which most NZ made Kimchi does not contain). Royal Save Mart's Kimchi selection is very reasonably priced especially when you buy the larger pack sizes. Above all the Royal Save Mart has a little food corner that is open until about 5 or 6pm. I haven't been able to sample the food myself as I never visit this store when it is open (I don't work in the city). However, the women that run the food corner also have a whole fridge of fresh made Korean side dishes (panchan) that are so reasonably priced and so damn delicious that I would imagine the mains are just as delectable. These women are from the deep south of Korea which is known to have the tastiest recipes in all of the land. Compared to the 3 other Auckland Korean supermarkets I've been to, this one has the best and varied selection of side dishes. If you want to impress your friends by cooking Korean food, you can buy the side dishes from these ladies and make 'cheats bibimibop' (pic uploaded). Only downside is a real lack of parking, but its in the CBD so get over it and enjoy!

In addition to the food there are other home things like cleaning supplies. My favourite aisle was the ceramics with all the tea and sake sets, so many cute bowls, plates and chop sticks. If you cook Asian food at home but the presentation is all wrong because you lack the leaf plates and little bowls used in the Asian restaurants then pay a visit to this place. While you're here stock up on nori, wasabi, pickled ginger and Kikkoman soy sauce, the prices are fantastic.

I have been a customer of the Browns Bay store since it opened in the new location , we have…read moremanaged to get most of the items we needed to feed a family of 5 , but on the most recent shop my 25 yr old step daughter armend with her ID was refused a bottle of wine , when I spoke to the supervisor she stated that because my 22 yr old step son who was with his sister and had no ID that was the reason for the refusal , as my daughter was doing the shopping for herself and also paying for it with her own card she is the purchaser not her brother . we have shopped at other supermarkets previously and they have only used her ID Card and been approved . according to the law the legal age is 19 to be able to purchase alcohol showing your ID card if requested or with an Adult . based on New World Browns Bay interpretation of the law who ever is with the purchaser must also have ID . if her Niece was with her who is not 19 yrs old and no ID we assume they would not serve her as well . I am sad of the outcome as we are now shopping elsewhere .

This place is well lit, modern on the interior, with a good selection of seafood. There's an area where you can grab your own clams! They had all kinds of different Kiwi products (2 kinds of kiwi too!) They had Golden kiwis, which I'd never seen before! The meat department looked fresh, with reasonably priced cuts of chicken, beef, but no possum. I browsed the candy department, and they had shelf after shelf of disgusting licorice. That stuff is awful, but kiwis seem to go gaga for it. They offered a dizzying array of licorice. They also offered a few different options for Vegemite. I don't quite get the difference between Marmite and Vegemite, but they have the choice between the two. I used the self checker and had no problems. They take a bit getting used to- I prefer a smiling checkout clerk, but you gotta get with the times, I guess. There's a nice floral area at the front, and they sell bread!

It can be cheap as, but the quality is not so good. The service is pretty good and even if it is quite busy check out never takes too long. Also of note here inside the actual supermarket building is a travel agent which can give some pretty good deals, a money exchange and a healthy living shop that sells all them supplements and body creams etc.

Just cant be beaten for freshness. Also has all the usual dead fish on the chiller slab. Wow the mussels taste so fresh, not smelling of ammonia like the ones at the usual supermarkets.

Beware!!! Bought a large bag of Maxi Cat cat kibble which cost $50 from memory. Can't see any BB…read moredate on it. Gave some to my cat, next thing he has a broken tooth and won't touch it. Tested it with a knife to see how hard it was and the pieces are like pebbles and need a meat cleaver to split them. Took cat to vet for extraction under general anaesthetic- cost $750. I'm fuming.
