Wasabi House is our go to for sushi when we are in Halifax. A nice find was the Boston Roll with piled high crab and Mango slices. This place has the best Chirachi I have had as it is my go to dish. It comes with a side salad and hot miso soup. Every time we go we are given complementary rolls when our orders arrive. A nice extra treat that I have never seen done in any other sushi restaurant as we have lived in 4 provinces and have been to a lot of sushi restaurants across the country. We ordered... and when we got our food, we thought we got somebody elses order... Some of the items looked like what we ordered, but others didn't...and we are "Sushi Addicts"... The rolls and everything else had way too much Rice packed into everything. It was a good thing we didn't over order...we would STILL be there, haha... The staff was nice, efficient, and attentive... Yes I get it, they give you 'free rolls or soup'. But I have seen this kitchen and it could be a scene in a horror movie. It is filthy. Rats chew through their wiring so often they constantly need repairs (which is what brought be there for a repair and how I saw the kitchen/back area). Sealed garbage bags were piled on the floor and when bumped would jostle as they had live rats crawling inside them. Raw fish was being prepared on a slab of unfinished plywood that covered the access hole to the unfinished basement. I was offered food for free for my services and kindly refused. Check the health inspector site. They have been shut down numerous times for failing to meet Nova Scotia food safety regulations. read more

I hadn't been here in ages, I don't eat sushi myself but it's usually where I take anyone who visits who say they want sushi because his place at least used to have a good reputation. Never again. The smell of urine was so strong it was nauseating, there was mould on ceiling, everything was grimy. We should have trusted our instinct and left at that. Service was terrible, we weren't even sure who our server was at first. Never checked on us during the meal. We had to ask them to clear the table that was right next to us because they just left it for so long flies were crawling all over the dirty dishes. There were three or four other tables covered in piles of dirty dishes that were never cleared the entire time we were there. And it was not busy, there were at least two servers who were either on their phones or sitting looking bored, while food sat attracting flies all over the place. The food itself was bad too. My friend said her sushi was barely edible, the rice had turned into a congealed paste. They sent over a free roll, but it was the same thing, so she couldn't even eat it. I ordered a noodle dish that was also mushy and over cooked. We had to go up and ask to pay so we could leave because our server just disappeared for so long. As we were leaving we also noticed the entryway smelled like urine. I was shocked how bad this experience was, I think this place is resting on the laurels of their old reputation. When you walk in, there isn't an obvious menu. There are people available to take your order, but it seems like you're expected to know what you want. If not, you can ask questions and they'll recommend stuff. It may be a good idea to look at the menu before coming, and come in prepared to order or with questions. I usually do this anyway, so I asked my question and ordered quickly, which they seemed to appreciate. They said it'd be ready in 15 minutes, it was out in 3 minutes. They are very fast paced and efficient. I ordered a tuna roll which should be 6 pieces, they gave me 12 pieces plus 3 nigiri. I've been told they always give extra sushi, but I was not expecting that much. The sushi I got was slightly mediocre but I still enjoyed it. Today I had their combo A lunch special and it was a great deal at $8.99 and I got to choose two sides - veggie and shrimp tempura and fried scallops. We also received an interesting sushi combination on the house of sweet potato and banana. Overall, the lunch special was a bit plain and I would stick to their regular menu next time. Oh Wasabi House, you are just my favourite. Yes you are a little on the small side and your waits can be long if I forget to make reservations. But your amazing staff and delectable food make it all worth it. I like coming to a restaurant where the staff makes you feel more like old friends than customers. I usually try to eat at least one thing new each time I visit Wasabi, last time I went I had the maki crystal. It comes with miso soup,( which I opted for spicy) and house salad. My old faithful the spicy miso, was the perfect amount of warm and spicy. I had the tempura for my appetizer it was crisp, hot and fresh, the shrimp was juicy and the sweet potato was perfect. Maki crystal comes with three small rolls, the spicy tuna, spicy salmon and dynamite roll. All three were quite generous with their fillings, the fish was cold and fresh, and just the right amount to spicy tempura bits, that were still nice and crispy.Though I didn`t have dessert this time, their simple banana tempura is always done to perfection, and the black sesame ice cream is a almost indescribable cold, yet toasty flavour. I like the atmosphere of this place late in the evening, its the perfect place to catch up with friends at the end of a work day or week. The walls of Wasabi House know so much of my history. I'm feeling overwhelmed trying to review this place as it is now, because it isn't what it once was. It is now an excellent (by Halifax standards) sushi joint, when it used to be the Spartan. I sat at the counter and drank milkshakes with my dad before my feet could touch the ground. I brainstormed with best friends over egg lunches and coke cans about weekend mischief. I fell in and out of devastating (puppy) love a few of times here. But most importantly, I never spent more than $5. I can still hear Maria and other Maria and really old Maria's voices in my head. What a grimy, perfect little place this was to me. Alright. I'm finished. Wasabi House has really cleaned up this Quinpool corner and is serving up some of the freshest sushi I've ever had in Halifax. It unfortunately did cost more than $4, but you know what? It wasn't as pricy as I feared! Two of us dined like queens for $30, and the chef sent over a bonus roll! Apparently this is the norm, and what a fantastic norm this is! Free sushi is the best sushi! Confession: I read a lot of yelp reviews. I often let my opinion be swayed by the number of stars and what other people have said before even stepping into an establishment. That being said, I put off going to Wasabi house because many other yelpers found it very busy and the wait time almost unbearable. I would walk by and peer in and wonder what it would be like to go in but then my little yelper voice in the back of my head (we all have one of those don't we?) would chime in... "long wait times"... "service isn't very good" "wait staff seem unorganized" Finally I let curiosity get the best of me because dammit I love sushi. We picked a perfect time to go: early afternoon. Just after the "lunch time" hour on a Saturday afternoon we walked in and found the place almost to ourselves. No wait time what so ever. Just a few minutes after settling in we ordered: Miso soup, edamame, dragon roll and veggie tempura roll with sweet potato... Our service: Very Good and Very Organized. The food: So good and just because this is my review let me spend a few lines talking about the dragon roll. Fresh avocado/ cucumber topped with sweet slices of mango with a mango reduction...It was amazing. (hmmmmmm, now I'm thinking about dragon rolls; another early afternoon lunch perhaps?). My one complaint? Too warm inside. I think that crosses out the complaint that the bathrooms are too cold by another yelper (maybe next time I'll just go back and forth so my temperature stays regulated) Extra Bonus: 10% discount with cash payment. Their sushi are good. My first time to taste fried or crispy crust on sushi. Maybe it's a type of Korean sushi because I never taste that in a Japanese restaurant. Also, I went there after 9pm, it was still crowded, and you can have happy hours menu, which are much more cheaper. That is, you can combine 2 or 3 rolls. This review is just for the sushi pizza at Wasabi House, as that's pretty much all I ever order when going out for sushi. I had a great takeout experience at this place over the holidays. I ordered on a busy weeknight, and I appreciated that they let me know over the phone that it was pretty busy and gave an accurate estimate of how long the order would take to be ready. When I went in to pick it up, there were a few people ahead of me in line. I didn't mind waiting a few minutes - I enjoyed seeing a locally owned spot in my neighborhood so packed! The lady who rang in my order couldn't have been nicer, and they had even thrown a few extra pieces of sushi into the box because of the wait. Totally unnecessary, but delicious. The pizza itself was tasty, but massive. I rarely eat a whole one alone anyway, but in fact this pizza lasted me two meals and then some. The crispy rice bottom is covered in fish, with more rice on top and other toppings like avacado and roe. It was way too much food for me, but at about $14 I felt like I'd gotten an amazing deal. I'm not going to lie, when I first heard there was a sushi place opening on Quinpool I was beyond skeptical. I for some reason just always associate Quinpool eateries as being cheap and cheerful and mostly just for breakfast. Then, that dreaded awkward moment happened, there was no sign indicating to wait to be seated, or just find a table and hope for the best. So I spotted a friend, and made my way over to sit at a table next to him. Yeah, turns out, this is a wait to be seated kind of place. Oops. Nothing more awkward than sitting down, and then standing awkwardly, and then being reseated in a busy restaurant. Luckily, we were seated in a little private nook so we could avoid the scrutinizing looks (real or imagined....) from the other diners. Service was a bit shaky starting off, one server gave us menus, and took a drink order and then forgot about us. Another server stepped in to take our order saying that the other server was really busy, she then became our server. It happens, and the place was quite busy. Our new server was great- friendly, but not overbearing. Due to some sketchy food allergies, my selection for sushi is shrinking, so I was stoked to see some different and unique rolls on the menu that I could actually eat. The fact that everything was incredibly delicious was a great added bonus. I'm a big fan of a place that offers a discount for paying with cash, which they do. PLUS! I think a real Japanese sushi chef would faint at the sight of this place. I was so disgusted by the cleanliness of the restaurant when I walked in and while waiting for my lunch take-out order. I probably would've been happier if I got it delivered, but am thankful that I went in. Ignorance is a bliss in this case. The cramped fridge display where all the sashimi(raw fish) cozied up in plastic wraps, the chefs that talked non-stop in Mandarin(notice: not Japanese) while making rolls, the sagging shelves, the dirty floor and chairs, a sour smell in the air...How has everyone missed all these? Are we all giddy about the few free tiny prawns that they throw in and ignoring the fact that this place is worse than a hole in the wall? And the waiters/waitresses all handle money from a purse in their apron...did they wash their hands afterward? Who knows. Comparatively speaking the rolls here are cheaper, but not by much, because they're also smaller. I purposely ordered the Monster roll because I wanted something big...but sadly it was small, and where is the BBQ eel and sauce? The spicy salmon roll is a joke, tiny pieces of salmon with Panko crumbs stuffed in a tiny roll? PANKO CRUMB!? You must be joking. We've ordered the dynamite rolls and some other fancy chef's specials, the batter is tired and the prawns are as skinny as my pinkies. I was surprised to find a 20 minute line-up at the Wasabi House on a Thursday evening but was also a tiny bit happy. You see, I don't treat myself to sushi too too often so I was a bit hesitant to stray away from my go-to sushi spots in the city. The Wasabi House has happily been added to said list! To start off, the atmosphere was super fun and inviting. It's a small space so the crowd provided a great energy to the dinning room without feeling over crowded. Our server was fantastic - throughout the whole meal he was cracking jokes and making great recommendations while also being very attentive. Although I'm usually not a fan, my dinner guest and I ended up splitting a combo. It provided us with our choice of a soup or salad, 3 maki rolls and 1 specialty roll. I'm not usually a combo fan because I find them limiting in variety but the menu had a few varieties to choose from. Another plus to combos are the prices - for about $20 (including tax and tip), I basically rolled out of the restaurant chocked full of sushi. That's my kind of way to end a day!! read more
