A great sushi restaurant is always a welcome find and Hamachi Kia is a good find. We usually arrive in the afternoon so seating is easy as they are not to busy. A wide variety of sushi and sashimi all very well done. Hamichi Kita has become one of our go to for sushi when we get into Halifax. read more

So how has my favourite sushi place done during the COVID madness? Just fine as far as I can see. It opens half an hour later at lunch than before, now 1200, which may impact the trade from the Naval Base and Stadacona, but it still gets fairly busy very quickly. At least one of the sushi chefs has made it through the closures and restrictions and he's still producing top quality fare. Prices are a little up, which is to be expected thanks to the government induced inflation we are experiencing, but it's still very good value. Staffing out front is way down on its heyday before Boris blew it and had to sell, but I haven't noticed a huge effect on service. Now approaching 500 check-ins here, so I may be a little biased, but for me still the top sushi joint in town. read more

Hamachi Kita is definitely one of the best sushi spot in Halifax. I have been there 4 times now and every time I have been really happy with what I got. I always begin my sushi meal with some miso soup, theirs was good, not too salty but still very flavourful. The sushi is very fresh; there is just enough rice and plenty of fish. They're basic sushi are excellent. The fusion sushis are really original and they are AMAZING. It's always nice to have your basic spicy salmon but I love to add some special roll to my order and I find that Hamachi kita has the best variety. By the way, the hurricane roll is delicious. :) The décor is really nice although I tend to eat on the patio. As for the service, it is good, can be a little bit slow when its full but normally its quite fast. The waiters are nice and very courteous. All in all, Hamachi kita is an excellent sushi spot and I highly recommend you go check it out, you'll love it! read more

We are regular customers with the Hamachi restaurants from the days they had one in Dartmouth on Portland Street, and later on Morris Street and now on Young Street. Never disappointed! They make excellent sushi Rolls! Beautiful to the eyes and Scrumptious to the mouth! The Udon noodles soups are always yummy, great way to warm you up on those cold winter days! The tempuras are to die for! Tonight we ordered the Kings Roll, Deep fried California and Spicy Jalapeño rolls, shrimp and vegy tempuras, and Beef Udon soup. Definitely hit the spot!! I've come to Hamachi Kita before for lunch and usually stick with the bento box. Today however I've had to find a place to eat for supper and I decided to come here. The service was great, greeted at the door and offered any seat in the house. Largely due to the fact it was a quiet Monday night. I decided to keep it rather boring and went with thai spring rolls to start followed by phad thai gai. The spring rolls were crispy with lots of flavor. Stuffed just right, every bite offered a mix of everything in the roll. The phad thai was a generous portion of deliciousness. The just right balance of heat, can't go wrong. Any time I review a sushi restaurant, my thoughts need to be taken with a grain of salt. I'm not really much into sushi, but I am a major fan of sushi pizza. This was my second sushi pizza experience, and it wasn't my favorite. If I could describe it in only a couple words I'd say "too much". I got the basic sushi pizza, which comes covered in crab, scallop and smoked salmon. And I mean covered - it was overflowing to the point that I actually picked some of the toppings off and gave it to my fiancee to eat. It made it difficult to eat, and there was just too much going on. The other choices for sushi pizza were veggie, which sounded tasty if not a bit dull, and rainbow, which also sounded a bit overboard. Sometimes simplicity is a good thing, you know? The tempura was delicious, but I just would have liked the sushi pizza more if it had been a bit toned down. read more

I love sushi. Sometimes I love "authentic" sushi, all slimy and fishy. Other times I like sushi made with things like mango and coconut and deep-fried bits that are probably akin to deep-fried-battered Mars Bars to someone from Japan. Whatever I'm after, I have always had a great meal at Hamachi Kita. Located in the Hydrostone, it's a nice break from downtown but still centrally located. The food always tastes fresh. Best of all, the extensive menu means it's great for groups where one or more people may not be sushi lovers. There's a wide variety of curries, noodle dishes, and other entrees that provide generous portions and lots of flavour for even the biggest sushiphobes. My only gripes are the washrooms (down the hall, past a creepy doorway, turn right and still have to squint at the doors to make sure you're going in the right one) and the size - it gets pretty packed on weekend evenings so you might feel like you're sitting with the neighbouring table at times. One bonus - they are open for lunch on Sundays. It seems like many sushi places don't open until 4:30 or later on Sundays. Hamachi Kita is open from 12-11, which is great if you're looking for a midday meal. read more

Hamachi Kita is consistently consistent. Great spot to grab a sushi lunch, though it's a wee bit difficult to get in and out within my allotted hour lunch break. The Bento Box lunch special is a crazy good deal, and there are lots of options for non-sushi aficionados - teriyaki, thai, tempura, etc. It's become our go-to "Farewell Lunch" spot at work, and groups have never been a problem. My office is located in the Hydrostone Market, so needless to say, there's no shortage of great restaurants nearby. I usually 'forget' to pack a lunch about once a week, and when I do, Hamachi Kita's Bento Box #5 never fails to satisfy. What I love about the Hamachi Group of Restaurants is that each venue has its own head chef (rather than opting for a single F&B Director as some restauranteurs choose to do). Each Hamachi chef brings his/her own unique asian flair to the menu, and Hamachi Kita has more Thai dishes than its sister eateries. While the service can be spotty and not everything on the menu is swoon-worthy, the Bento Box #5 lures me in every time. It's not often I give out 2-Star ratings but after a few trips to Hamachi Kita, I'm confident the "Meh, I've had better" rating applies. Let's talk about where it loses it: the food. I'm usually just looking for a few veggie maki rolls. I'm pretty easy to please but I find the selection here to be lacking and far less imaginative than several other sushi places in the city. And when it comes? Meh. I've had better. And at better prices. And that's really where it loses almost all its points because practically everything else is great. Every time I've gone the servers have been very friendly, courteous and attentive; whether it was with a large group or just by myself. The decor is good if a bit dark. Upon arriving, on the wall you see a bunch of "awards" hamachi kita has received. These must be awards from years ago because there's no way they could win any type of award lately. First of all the restaurant, smelled old and honestly... like wet cat. Also, we were the only people in there, not a good sign. We placed our order and it came slowly. The tempura tasted purely of grease. And the waitress, unknowingly (wishful thinking) spilt soup all over my brother and father's jackets. And to top it off there was a hair in the agedashi tofu. Andddd to top that off I had to remind the waitress to bring my sake. I get it, sometimes there's a lot going on but considering we were the only people I find this unacceptable. The sushi took so long they end up giving us free edamame, great, free food! It was probably the least fresh thing we ate, and completely over-salted. The sushi was okay. Let's say, eatable? Not the most innovative or fresh sushi in halifax that's for sure. With the boom of sushi restaurants in Halifax I wouldn't bother spending time or money here (fairly pricy for what you get). Hamachi Kita is a teeterer for me. Two stars? Three stars? It's a tough one to pinpoint. Overall, I find their sushi just fine. In fact, I can even put it in the 'I'm a fan' territory when I go a while without having sushi elsewhere. But the second I munch on some maki from one of my sushi favourites, Hamachi Kita's just don't measure up. Will I ever turn down a sweet potato tempura roll with spicy mayo? Nope! But this spot won't be my first pick for it, especially since it's the most exciting vegetarian roll on the menu with the exception of maybe some of their fruit-laden ones that just don't float my sushi boat. Staff has usually been great although they tend to miss some special requests. A few times I've had to get spicy mayo on the side after they forgot to get it in the rolls. Still, all friendly, helpful, and attentive boxes are checked. The space is pretty lovely upon arrival with big bold murals but having to walk down a deserted hallway past the receiving entrance to get to the washroom is a bit of a buzz kill. read more

My experiences at Hamachi Kita have overall been in the mid-range. Although I have had some great experiences at the restaurant, their prices are more expensive than others that focus primarily on sushi or Thai food in the Halifax area. The atmosphere of the place is really unique, with fish paintings/murals on the walls and some chalkboards that feature the daily specials/drinks. The seating is comfortable and not too close together. The food is of quality, however, the last time I ate there, I discovered a sticker on my pepper. (I had a stir-fry.) When I complained to the waiter, he offered me 10% off my dish - for a total savings of under $2! While not entirely impressed, I was surprised to find that my friends also had similar experiences with finding stickers in their meals! read more

Went for lunch with my work spouse. I have had good experiences with Hamachi downtown in the past. Service: Service was good, Total time for lunch was 1 full hour which could be a bit better and was a delayed by the kitchen. Server was great. Decor: Outdoor tables were tempting but weather was looking very Nova Scotian. We were seated by the bathroom which for me is hateful because I can smell urinal pucks when I first arrived. Anyway, next time I will speak up and tell them I don't want to sit next to the bathrooms and that they shouldn't even have a table there! Food: Bento boxes are a great package for lunch. I ordered a #6 with 6 sushi rolls (Cali and Salmon), a salad, crispy roll, and red curry w/noodle. I also got a salad roll. My companion ordered a similar box with spicy salmon rolls and tempura fried veggies and thai bbq chicken. Everything was great and done well. The salad roll was refreshing while the red curry had a perfect kick for a spicy food lover. Value: I find the prices are set well. I think at some Chinese places you can get lunch for $10-12. Oh. My. Goodness. I LOVE this place. There are a million good sushi places in Halifax and I order from this one exclusively. Can you believe they deliver anywhere in Halifax without a charge? They have a spicy mayo sauce that will add the perfect flavour to any roll you order. The service is always done with a smile. Hamachi Kita is a good, reliable place to grab a bite of sushi, or to settle in for a long pan-Asian meal. The food is good, solid, and what you expect, but probably nothing to write home about. They do creative special rolls, which I've never tried, because I'm just not sure tropical fruit sushi is where it's at for me. Even in the expanded space it can be hard to get a table, so you need to plan your trips for a weeknight, or even better, get your food to go and eat it on the couch. The decor is very nice, and it's really cozy if you can snag yourself a booth. The bathrooms are pretty darned inaccessible, in a typical Halifax down the stairs and along a hallway fashion. Still, their sashimi plate was the first thing I craved when I knew I was getting induced the next morning and was ready to brave raw fish after nine months' abstinence. read more

Thai cuisine LOL we sent back my wifes dish to the kitchen. It was drowning in oil so much so I have never seen anything like it. My food was good maki rolls but is that not what they are a sushi house at Hamachi house. Stick to the sushi. This place is venturing off to try to be everything to everyone. This time it failed. While we ate our apps the server dropped our main course plates down? This is a stupid way to serve food as it makes people feel rushed. It is the kitchens fault for firing the food to soon and letting it sit on the line. The server felt pressed to get it out. We could tell from the skin from the heat lamps and the thick separation between the red paste and oil most of which was oil. No taste other then oil I had to try it. It was a gross bastardization of Thai food. I would return to this location for the sushi as they always have done a great job at that but this experience was a total disappointment. A sitdown dinner here is out of the question. I would only ever treat the place as a take out for sushi. Also I have to say a dam fly black fly landed on the rim of my wife's plate and I am not even joking it could not escape as it got oil on its wings and started downing. My wife took her fork and tried to push it away but it was like trying to rescue a bird caught up in the Exxon Valdez. It was getting worse and now the fly was on her plate and it stopped moving well it was covered in oil sinking in it so it made sense that the fly was dead and that the server compted the food. read more

I always overlooked this restaurant because I assumed they only had sushi, which I do not like. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that they have a decent selection of other dishes, so a coworker was able to convince me to go. I've probably been back 6 times in the past two months, thanks to the curries. I've enjoyed each curry that I've had here, so far. I ventured away from them and tried a barbecue dish one time, noted my error in cheating on my beloved curries, and haven't strayed since. I've tried mixed drinks a couple of times and haven't been impressed--they were very watery and tasted weak, even though I ordered the 2 oz versions. As always, parking around here can be a challenge. We tend to eat on the patio and have seen 2 accidents in my 6 visits. The lunch specials are reasonably priced (my lunch mates are big fans of the sizable lunch bento offerings). Wait staff really seems to be a mixed bag, but the serving time is usually decent during lunch. If you're looking for dine-in during lunch, I'd recommend planning for at least one hour. read more

Tried the Hydrostone location recently when visiting Halifax. Had been to the original Hamachi House downtown back in the day. Extensive menu with some other Asian options other than Japanese. At lunch they have some interesting bento box combinations not just limited to Japanese. Went for a bento box with some sushi, salad rolls, salad and Thai grilled chicken. Sushi was good and fresh. Salad rolls decent. Thai grilled chicken was just ok - some chicken with a sauce poured on top - not what I envisioned. The salad however, was pretty sad. Some stale iceberg lettuce with some dressing on top. I'm not sure why iceberg lettuce is served anywhere - tasteless and has no nutritional value. If you must serve it, make sure it's fresh and not just filler. My friend's sushi combo looked quite good. I say stick with the sushi at this place. Halifax sushi spots should have no excuse but to serve the freshest seafood. Nice interior and location in a trendy area. These guys seem to be branching out as a chain of sorts. Traditional, delicious Thai spring rolls (two cut into halves) with glass noodles & vegetables, served with sweet chili dipping sauce. (6.99). Perfect to get the mouth watering. Very good char-grilled chicken Thai Barbeque entrée served with rice and choice of vegetables or basic salad. Large portion. Lots of flavor in the bbq sauce made with coconut milk, lemongrass, ginger & honey. Worth upgrading to Japanese rice also, versus the automatic steamed rice. (15.99) Excellent Deluxe Vegetable Maki. 5 pieces each of green pepper tempura, enoki mushroom tempura and sweet potato tempura. The pieces were a good size where I was very full, but not choking on them being sliced too big (as often the case at many sushi restaurants 14.99) Standard edamame (4.99) and good prego roll (Mushroom, avocado, cucumber & cream cheese withspicy or regular sauce. 6.99). The menu notes that "this is enjoyed by pregnant woman" - LOL! I understand, since sushi isn't recommended at the time, so this is great, but still cracked me up for some reason. My partner really liked the Thai Grilled Beef Salad (grilled marinated beef, tomato, cucumber, onion, red pepper with chili lemon sauce. 9.99), and found it quite spicy. The veggie Pad Thai (stir-fried rice noodles with egg, bean sprout and chili pad Thai sauce, sprinkled with ground peanut.) was good and very filling, although not my favorite in the city. I tend to prefer a bit less sauce and more of a savoury flavor than sweet. Friendly service. 1st visit: around 5:30 on a sunny Friday evening and were the only people sitting on the patio for the first few minutes. By the time we finished at 7, the patio of about 8-10 tables was mostly full. Considering this is right on Young St, it was surprisingly quiet to sit and have a relaxing dinner. 2nd visit: 4pm-ish on a freezing winter Saturday. Obviously sat inside this time. Cute, casual environment with the black wall painted blue with an underwater sea theme. Sushi bar off to your right with the usual cooks doing their prep. Maybe a dozen to 15 tables in total? I'd definitely call this place casual though, not fine dining. Being it was early, I was the only customer there, so naturally received immediate and very friendly service. By the time I left, two parties had arrived to order take-out and another for table service. 3rd visit: sunny, chilly Sunday in May for lunch. We were the first customers of the day and after about 45 minutes, a second table outside was taken, but didn't notice anyone going inside. 4th visit: hot Monday in July around 5pm...very friendly waitor. Tried the Harbour Highlight martini (Crème de banane, coconut rum, touch of vodka and pineapple juice. 9.75) which is like drinking a glass of summer. The patio of maybe 10 tables was half occupied. Ordered the same food as last visit and was satisfied, plus gave in to try the banana tempura dessert with three scoops of ice cream (we opted for one mango and two black sesame). They ran out of chocolate sauce and it wasn't the most artsy dessert presentation I've ever seen, but it was quick and delicious, so no complaints. My only 'concern' with this visit was that the washroom in the basement had a lot of fruit flies or black flies, at least five or six harassed me while I was in there for a minute or two. The Hamachi Kita is like the smallest sibling in the Hamachi family: not quite in the downtown thick of it, a little smaller, and a little less flashy. I've been to this location on a few occasions, and have enjoyed my visits. The service isn't always quick, but it is friendly. As a veggie, I go for items like the avocado roll, yam tempura roll, agedashi tofu, miso soup and ginger salad. It's hard for these dishes to get messed up, as they're pretty easy to prepare and don't require many ingredients. The Hamachi Kita succeeds at whipping up these plates, making sure to use ripe avocados for the rolls. It's a pet-peeve of mine when the avocados are served up hard and not quite ready for consumption, so it's the first thing I judge when out for Japanese food. The Hamachi Kita is good news. It's in the Hydrostone Market, which is a bonus, plus they have the weight of the other Hamachi restaurants behind them, automatically giving them credibility as a good place to dine. read more

Hamachi Kita is a tough call. As much as we enjoyed the meal, HK almost pulled three stars for having a fairly limited selection of vegetarian fare, most of which prominently featured the humble sweet potato. Why am I pushing it to four stars? We thoroughly enjoyed our order. The miso soup was cool enough to enjoy right away and not too salty; the vegetable tempura (sweet potato, zucchini, eggplant and possibly red pepper) was literally mouth-watering, although again, the majority of it was sweet potato. Our server brought the rolls as soon as she finished clearing away our appetizers and they didn't disappoint. The cool and creamy Prego (mushroom, avocado, cream cheese, cucumber, sauce) was a smooth counter to the crunch of the Golden California (battered and fried avocado, surimi, cucumber, masago) and Soft Shell Crab (battered Chesapeake Bay soft shell crab, avocado, cucumber, lettuce, masago) and the heat of the Fire Kamakachi (avocado, spicy mayo, tempura, smoked salmon). My favourite sushi place in Halifax - looking fabulous following its renovation and the food is as amazing as ever. The sushi pizza, tempura, Duterte Roll, brooksie roll are all can't-miss, or if you prefer to keep it simple, the sashimi is always top-grade, the beef teriyaki is delicious, and the lunchtime bento boxes are great. People tell me the Thai food is also very good but you'd have to ask someone who can ignore the amazing sushi on the menu. read more
