Man, coming here made me SO hangry. On an afternoon where the restaurant wasn't even busy, it took them over 45 minutes to bring us our food. And it didn't even all come at once, it was just our first dish. I'm not sure why it took them that ridiculously long considering they're an all you can eat restaurant and they should be making dishes prepared for queuing. As for the food quality, I would say everything tasted fine but I don't go to restaurants to wait THAT long for simple orders and the cost wasn't even cheap. Because of that bad experience, I'm not a fan of this place now. I agree there's no good sushi anywhere else in Thunder Bay but I just absolutely cannot tolerate that wait time. read more

Meh! That's it, just a Meh.... The Pad Thai was nothing special, and certainly not spicy as requested. The Tuna on the salad was good but bland and I had a TNT roll which was anything but. It was mushy and the rice texture not right. I was there for 90 mins to get these three items. The serving staff running around working hard and I can only surmise that the kitchen is really the problem from the taste to the slow service. I wouldn't avoid this place I just wouldn't go again on purpose. read more

The food here is good. The servers have usually been good. But the owner/manager? Definitely needs an attitude adjustment before I ever willingly set foot in here again. (3.5 stars if I could) So, we came with our children late getting into town. They have two ways to order...all you can eat as well as eating off the menu. Based on the reviews here, we didn't think our kids could sit for an extended amount of time in the restaurant for the all you can eat option. So we decided to order some things a la carte and if they kids got irritable we would leave. I have to say that this wasn't our first pick but it was one of the few ones open after 8 PM (we are from Alberta where most places are open to at least 10 PM). All in all, it was a pretty decent meal for a reasonable price. Pretty slow service, I would say that. We tried a number of things. ...some were hits and some were misses. Don't bother with the spring rolls (no photo but my kids were so hungry they gobbled them up) and the veggie tempura. For both of these the oil that the items was not hot enough and the result was oily limp items. However, the Agadashi Tofu was excellent...beautifully presented and the fried skin of the tofu complemented the savory sauce and the crisp green onions. The Sushi/Maki platter was beautiful too. I loved looking at it and it was fresh, flavourful and an excellent variety. The Yaki Udon noodles were cooked perfectly and had a nice mild flavour. And the gyoza were plump, well cooked and nicely wrapped. read more

The all you can eat is definitely great value. Definitely disappointed to find out they don't put wontons in the wonton soup because it cost them too much. At least the waitress told us up front. Went for the udon noodle soup instead. There were udon noodles! I liked all the rolls we ordered but have had better rice. We had to ask for wasabi and ginger. Got one tiny dish for the 3 of us. I suppose we could have asked for more. Probably go back to sit in one of the private rooms. We always have fun eating out and I think sitting behind one of those curtains will ratchet it up even more. read more

I'll sum up the real quick - The glasses were empty most of the night - The portions were on the small side - The orders were never completed fully - The sushi was flavorless and the selection was meagre at best - It took almost 2 hours to get only 75% of our order - And they still had the audacity to ask for ~$45 per person for the meal. Honestly it's in the opinion of this customer if you are specifically looking for sushi, there are other and better places to get it from, like The Superstore. read more

My dinner was fair, I was going out w/ a few friends for a nice meetup but ended up waiting for a good 2 hours. We ate one thing, waited 15 minutes ate another and so on. The food was slightly above average and you should try it sometime, but prepare to be there for a good bit. read more

A very relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Service was great! You can't beat the All You Can Eat special they have. Decent size maki rolls too.

Wasabi is the second Japanese restaurant to open up in Thunder Bay. I've been impressed with the service every time I've come here; the wait staff are very friendly and service is very prompt. The atmosphere is also very nice and relaxing. Wasabi offers the same sort of "novelty" that Sushi Bowl, the other Japanese restaurant in the city, offers; tables that allow customers to sit on the floor like they do in Japan, but with a "cut-away" center so that people can dangle their legs if they can't sit with folded legs for long. They have normal tables with chairs too. Wasabi also has a very nice selection of appetizers, sushi and entrees. Whenever I come here, I've only had the appetizers and sushi so I can't say much about the entrees. However, the sushi has been really delicious and fresh. The maki are cut in very generous proportions, but not so much that it makes it impossible to eat. They have a large selection to chose from, and every roll that I've had has been absolutely delicious. My favourite by far is the crunch roll, which is essentially a dynamite roll with tempura flakes and unagi sauce drizzled on top. Delicious! The other appetizers like the miso soup, gyoza and tempura have all been really delicious too. I've always been very impressed with the quality and freshness, and was surprised to learn that the sushi chef goes through over 100 lbs of salmon and tuna a week. The owners seem to pride themselves on being a place to eat authentic Japanese food, rather than being an expensive, high-concept sushi bar. All of their prices are very reasonable; it seems expensive at a glance but after seeing the portions for the rolls, the price seems pretty damn reasonable. Also, they get points for having a web site where you can view their menu and even more points for delivering. Though I'm not sure just how far they're willing to deliver in the city since that specific info seems to be missing from their web site. read more

The guys in the CP rail yard recommended Wasabi to me and I'm glad they did. My waistline might not be so glad, since I indulged in the $23 "all-you-can-eat" deal... it was just such a good deal, since I knew I wanted at least one roll, sashimi AND a salad roll. I love how the all-you-can-eat deal allows you to order sashimi and nigri by the piece and has smaller versions of the appies so you can try a bit of everything. The only bit of disappointment that I had was that there wasn't a salmon-based roll that didn't include tempura or cream cheese. Something to trick myself into thinking I was being healthy. Oh well! Craving sushi in Thunder Bay. Thought that could be a dangerous proposition so I checked out the reviews in Yelp. They were positive enough to make me stray from the hotel and not have to suffer the fare in the hotel lounge another night. I decided to try the $24 all you can eat menu and you what, it was decent, service was good, the food was prompt, sushi was fairly decent. I would come back. It's unfortunate that I have to give 1star to write a review. In my opinion it is a star too many. I found a band aid in one of my dishes. Which is concerning to say the least. When I pointed this out to my server she said it did not come from the restaurant. I explained that I did not have any band aids on when I arrived. I asked to speak with a manager. I was told to leave. I was forced to pay my bill for all you can eat after only 2 dishes. By far the worst customer service and I have ever encountered. Do not consider this restaurant!! read more

I stopped by Wasabi tonight to grab a quick dinner. Since I was eating by myself I chose to sit at the bar where Wasabi's very kind owner, David, introduced himself to me. I ordered salmon nigiri and sashimi as well as a Philadelphia roll, and all three items tasted excellent. Quite possibly the worst Japanese food I've ever had. The rice was mushy, the tempura was greasy and even their signature condiment - the wasabi - was watery. I had three rolls and all of them were the same, rather bland with mushy, over boiled rice and the shrimp tempura in one of the rolls was really greasy.
