Upon walking in after 8pm and I half empty restaurant I asked to sit away from a large crowd and my host said she couldn't. Then, when I asked for jalapeño to be omitted from one of the rolls she had to ask the chef and he said no. He makes the rolls in front of me. All he had to do was omit the item, but he decided it was easier to be difficult. Awful customer service at best. The lighting is bad, and every chair in the building is filthy. I wanted some good sushi in Roanoke and this place was suggested to me. I went with my family for dinner and ordered a Spider Roll and a Shrimp Tempura Roll. The sushi was delicious! Very good portion sizes and filled me up. Unfortunately, the waitress seemed less than thrilled to serve us. It's a shame because the food is so good I definitely recommend it for the food alone. This is by far my favorite sushi restaurant in the Roanoke area, and one of my favorites anywhere. And trust me, I've eaten a lot of sushi, including in many cities larger and closer to the ocean. Wasabis isn't as good as the top places in, say, southern California, but it's really good. The rolls are the best items on the menu. I like that they're large (whatever, I'm gluttonous about sushi) and there's a wide variety to chose from. I've eaten here probably about 100 times, and I've never had a bad piece of fish (nor have any of my dining companions). There is one roll that is covered in sauces, which I see a lot of complaints about. It's the Sumo Roll, and apparently it's the most popular roll on the menu. I personally don't like it because I don't like mayo. None of the other rolls I've ever tried here have been anywhere near as saucy as that one though. My personal favorite is the Lovers Roll, which is spicy tuna covered in avocado and drizzled with unagi sauce. Make a reservation if going on a weekend night or with a larger party, as it's pretty small inside. Also, bring a sweater because it's usually freezing. Back to add a few tips: You can get your rolls cut into smaller bites if you just ask. It's a fairly common request so they won't think you're crazy. Also, the Chirashi is excellent. read more

A hidden gem in SW Virginia, this hole in the wall was a delightful surprise that we discovered in 2014, and the quality of food hasn't declined over the four years that we've eaten there. Great customer service, fantastic atmosphere, and fresh fish make this a must visit destination. Highly recommend the salmon and the unagi! Lunch here is one of the best weekday deals in downtown Roanoke, and the crowd is proof. $9-10.50 gets you a bento box, sushi special (maki), Wasabi special, or sashimi special, which all include salad or miso soup. The service is always quick and helpful and the atmosphere is nice enough for a business lunch but casual enough to stop in after a pedicure next door or sweaty visit to the gym. read more

This is one of my all-time favorite sushi restaraunts! I go to school in Lexington, and it is always worth the one hour drive. I discovered Wasabi from high reviews on Google, and I was not disappointed with the selection! The menu is one of the only ones I have seen that explains the difference between sushi, sashimi, etc. to newcomers, and it has an extensive selection ranging from all the classic rolls to some very creative specialty rolls. There are also plenty of selections on the menu for people like myself who hate avocado, an ingredient which seems to be far too prevalent at other sushi restaurants. The service is always great when I go here, too, and the food usually comes out very quickly. A couple of warnings, though: not a ton of selection for non-sushi eaters. They have chicken teriyaki and a couple of other items, but for the most part don't plan to bring your non-sushi-loving friends here. The sushi pieces themselves are sometimes quite large, but the taste is incredible so it's worth the slight struggle. It's a really great restaurant, The owners are great, It has a nice intimate ambiance, and there are a wide variety of rolls (tempura/raw/mixed) and dishes to chose from. My favorite rolls are volcano, dynamite don, and the spicy saki hand roll. Also if you like fried rice order the Yakimeshi, I get it everytime I go. Wasabi's wins points for having a huge assortment of vegetarian sushi options for when my girlfriend has a craving for salmon. They have several veggie rolls, plus a number of vegetarian appetizers. The lose points, though, for employing sushi chefs who are absolutely incapable of sending out sushi rolls that don't have stray pieces of roe on them. Every time I went in for over a year, I reminded them that I was vegetarian and didn't eat roe, and every single time there were 10-20 pieces of roe in the sushi rice. The problem was that the chefs didn't clean their spaces or hands between rolls and they never cared to try. I get that this is a busy restaurant in the downtown market area of Roanoke, but if every other sushi place on earth can do it, so can you. The food itself was great, but I shouldn't have expected sushi perfection from a Japanese restaurant owned by white guys. It's not like the sushi chefs were trained in Japan or anything. Still, I'd like my requests to be met once in a while, especially when it involved a dietary restriction you supposedly cater to. I eventually just stopped ordering the sushi and got only appetizers for my meals. It meant no sushi, but also no masago and no mistakes. read more

Went to wasabi before Thanksgiving with my sister.we were reuniting for the first time in months! She loves sushi and we heard this was the best.WRONG. we ordered two rolls each. my sister did not like one of her rolls because it was drenched in sauce so she only ate one piece out of around 20. We informed the waitress and she asked what was wrong with the roll, we told her it was too much sauce and it did not taste good, she proceeded to tell us "well, its our most popular roll, everyone loves it"so we smiled and asked if we could "order another roll IN ITS PLACE" the waitress said yes, we ordered another roll that costs the same amount ($20) she brings it over but leaves the other sushi platter on the table. the whole time we were at the table that platter went untouched. when our check came, she cleared the table, and we noticed the check had the roll on there that she didn't like AND the roll that we ordered to REPLACE that roll. we got charged for both and she said that she would not take the roll off because "there was nothing wrong with it, we just didn't like it" but she had already thrown it away, so we couldn't even take it home for a family member if we wanted, so we asked to speak to the manager, HE SAID HE WOULD ONLY DO HALF OFF! like give me break. WHAT RESTAURANT MAKES YOU PAY FOR SOMETHING THAT YOU DON'T LIKE AFTER TASTING ONE BITE?!?!? so make sure you KNOW that you will like something before you eat it here. horrible customer service. i will never return. Everyone in the area claims that wasabi's is the BEST sushi in the area, but I would have to disagree with that. First off, they keep huge piles of raw fish right on the sushi bar. I don't know if other restaurants do this and you just don't see it, but it's really off-putting. I am a huge tuna fan because it usually has a really great texture, but I was not a fan of the spicy tuna roll that I got (I think it was the lover's roll and also had avocado on top). The tuna was bland and was a bit tough and chewy. The service is good, it's small but nice and clean inside. Overall I enjoyed eating there and was content with my order but there are much better places to get sushi in the area. read more

Our favorite sushi place around. Been from Atlanta to Chicago to New Orleans and have yet to have better. The spicy tuna roll mix is great and it's taste that isn't easily mimicked. The California rolls are a fantastic compliment to any of the other rolls you may choose. Sumo rolls are decadent and savory. Go for the volcano roll every time. Ordered teriyaki chicken with the rice and vegetables. The only vegetable I got was broccoli. When I asked about it, I was told that only broccoli came with it. The menu is very misleading. I gave this restaurant many chances. It is nice to go to during the week with one other person but I do not recommend ordering takeout, even if you call ahead of time. Their focus is on their in house clients and making that tip money. I ordered takeout one night, thirty minutes ahead of time and still had to wait in the restaurant for 25minutes! It is very solid, clean, fresh Japanese style sushi, rice and a few other classic dishes. Their miso soup is of the better I have found.
