This is a beautiful library that is located in a convenient part of Hagerstown, MD. Parking is ample and mostly free. The interior of this library is amazing. I really enjoyed exploring here. The local history room has a chair that was used by FDR once-- there is a lot of history to explore here. The Washington County Free Library has quiet study rooms, large meeting rooms, and even a dedicated teen space. I recommend this as one of the best libraries in Maryland. read more

I visited the library for a couple of hours between appts on 3/1/23. Unfortunately, I encountered extreme difficulty upon trying to leave. I started the departure process at 4:40 PM to get to my next appt in Funkstown at 5:00 PM. I went directly to the parking ticket machine to pay for my parking. I inserted my parking ticket and then inserted my credit card for payment. The screen froze for 5 minutes and would not take my payment before I went to the customer service desk. The customer service representative said it would be no problem, security would let me out. I had informed them that I had an appt at 5:00 PM and needed to leave quickly in order to get there in time. The customer service representative spoke with "Daniel" security for approximately 5 minutes before "Daniel" came out. I thought we would go directly to the parking lot so he could let me out, but no. We stood in front of the parking ticket machine for approximately 7 minutes before he went to get someone from administration. The person from administration came out and suggested that "Daniel" go ahead and let me out of the parking lot. 3 minutes later, we were finally leaving the library. "Daniel" was walking slowly behind me visiting with another library patron who was leaving. I yelled back that I needed him to let me out of the parking lot. He did not alter his pace. I was finally let out of the parking lot at 5:05 PM making me 15 minutes late for my appt in Funkstown where I arrived at 5:15 PM. I don't live in Washington County but am in the area frequently. This was a very poor experience, and I will not be visiting this location ever again. It should not take 25 minutes to leave the parking lot. Here are my recommendations for improvement. 1. Get a technician to come look at your parking ticket machine and fix it. Security and administration have no idea how the machine works and how to trouble shoot. Representatives from both departments were standing at the machine for several minutes scratching their heads not knowing what was wrong rather than providing customer service first and letting me out of the parking lot so I wouldn't be late for my appt. This will inevitably happen again to someone else and they may not be as nice as I was. 2. Set up training for customer service for all your employees, not just the customer service representatives. I received very poor customer service on my visit and was unnecessarily late for my appt. Do better! This was a very poor representation of free libraries across the State of Maryland. I guess it's true. You get what you pay for. But then again, I am a taxpayer and I expect better services from my tax dollars. read more

One of my favorite libraries in Maryland! Beautiful building with lots of spaces to sit and read. Study rooms are well appointed, clean, and easy to reserve/use. Love the fact that there are separate children's, teens, and study sections. Staff were extremely helpful, kind, and competent. Obviously a very good selection of books as well! read more

Last week I decided to try out this library for the first time. This is a beautiful library with a large selection, I thought I was in heaven. I picked out some books and then went to the front and asked if I could get a library card. The lady said, "I'm sorry, since your ID doesn't have your updated address you have to bring in a piece of mail with your current address to receive a library card." So i left without my books. Today I went in again. I picked out my books and brought them and a piece of mail to the front to get a library card and the lady said, "I'm sorry, you need to bring in two pieces of mail to get a library card." So I had to leave without my books. Next time I'm expecting her to say, "I'm sorry, we need 4 pieces of mail and the blood of a unicorn." I'm just a citizen who wants some books to read!!! I understand the neighborhood around this library is bad and they can't give temporary cards or anything, but when a nice, clean person comes in with their piece of mail for the second time... just cut them some slack. Seriously ridiculous. read more
