I love the concept of used bookstores and it's always great to get a bargain. The staff is nice and welcoming. The three stars is because this place is an utter mess of an massive amount of books. It sucks so much to have to write this because up until today, Wonder Book was one of my favorite spots in the DC area and my go-to for used books and physical media. I was coming back into town off a 3 day drive from Colorado and since my route took me through Hagerstown I figured I'd stop over at this location. My last stop was three hours prior so I desperately needed to use the bathroom when I arrived. Wonder Book doesn't have a public bathroom, so they directed me to Aldi. That's fine, I went over and came back to start browsing. My elderly mom was with me and didn't hear the note about no public restrooms, so she asked again and explained we'd been driving for hours from Colorado the man at the counter explained she'd need to go to Aldi. She walked out with some frustration while I continued browsing and as the door shut behind her another employee came up the aisle and said, "Your loss, go back there then." He apparently didn't realize we were together or didn't see me. I moved out of the aisle and said, "Excuse me?" asking him to repeat what he'd just said. He started backpedaling and said, "Oh no, no I meant I want to GO to Colorado! It's so pretty there, I want to go there!" I know what I heard. I've spent thousands over the years at Wonder Book in all three stores and online. I thought it was a great environment with chill staff but I saw its true colors today and I won't be back. S**talking an elderly person who literally just needed to use a bathroom is truly awful. From now on I'll be heading to Manassas which is just as close with a much cheaper, and much much friendlier, alternative. read more

Took the journey to the Hagerstown location today with the mindset to look through the postcard rack... what I got was more then that aka 2 hours of pleasant staff jokes and laughs and convo - Judah thanks - , a new hire coming on hi Haley. A pleasant Katie who indeed confirmed what she told me last week the cards would now be 50 cents each, instead of 3 for two dollars. If you want to buy stuff it will be okay. But beware if you bring them DVD's and books you will get ripped off. We brought 4 boxes of 400 plus ( from our private collection due to downsizing ) many new ones never checking even so when we called they told us depending what kind they pay $1 to $5 per item. I really want to write a good review for this place. I have been coming here for years and I found so many amazing books. However the people that they have employed are rude children. Whenever you ask them where anything is or have any kind of question they look at you like you just slapped them across the face. They act completely annoying to help you with anything it's absolutely ridiculous. Who's ever running this place needs to seriously consider hiring new people or at least teaching their employees about customer service. read more

I once encountered a man in Wonder Book & Video grumbling because he couldn't find the book he wanted. "It's like finding a needle in a haystack!" he complained. See, that's the thing with Wonder Book -- you can't go with a goal. It should be approached with an open mind, and give yourself a good time frame so you can browse to your heart's content. I've been to the store many times (including their other locations in Frederick) and sometimes I'll walk away with nothing, other times I'll find several random treasures. And while there's a great selection of a wide variety of books, don't expect them all to be in great quality - when they say used, they mean it, and some are batches of books that must have been damaged at some point. Other aspects: If you go to their website (www.wonderbk.com) you can order books from the warehouse, and they also have DVD & VHS rentals, as well as an assortment of CDs for sale. The only downside is that there's no bathroom, and their staff will redirect you to the chinese restaurant in the plaza. But otherwise, if you're a natural browser and are looking to expand your personal library with some really interesting finds, this is the place! read more

I love this store (and the one in Frederick too which is where I originally used to go to buy from them.) I have rarely failed to find exactly what I'm looking for and have found a lot of great gems at reasonable collectibles prices. I rarely get away without buying more than I intended and end up spending an hour or two just browsing thru the stacks. It's is SO restful. And they usually have good music playing as well. Yeh, it's a little 'messy'--in exactly the way I expect of a used book store. I'm on a hunt for personal treasure, not expecting a modern library setting. This is a treasure of a used bookstore. I was pleasantly surprised by how organized the shop is given the sheer volume of books. I like a particular American author who is no longer in print, so it's always a delight to find a book from the 30's or 40's by the author. They have loads of older craft books and brochures. I was looking for a manga for 8 yo and they were able to advise on which manga series might be appropriate for that age. read more

To me, Hagerstown has the Prime Outlets and the only Little Caesar's that I know of that's left in the world. That's it. Those two things pretty much round out my understanding of Hagerstown. And then I discovered this little gem in a strip mall that has a place called Super Shoes in it, which probably sells... shoes. Wonder Book & Video makes me happy just to think about my experience there. This ain't exactly Barnes and Noble, with its corporate polish, hot lattes and juggernaut-like delivery of books. What Wonder Book has are not-so popular books, video games, DVDs. Lots of books, though! Used, new books. A previous Yelper, Kate B. of Hanover, PA, suggested that you don't go with the goal of looking for one specific book--that's counter to the point of it all. Go to Wonder Book when you have a good two to three hours of your time to just lallygag and enjoy sitting down on the floor and looking through books almost a 100 years old, in some cases. I'm weird in that I actually like to buy books with someone's notes in the margins. And they have plenty like that here. Did I mention how cheap these books are? If you like Books and Books and more Books... then you will fall in love with Wonder Books. This place is like a maze with aisles and aisles of books. There are books on shelves, books stacked on the floor, Books on top of stands, Books inside Books... It's book insanity..and Its amazing! You could easily spend the better part of your entire day just browsing one section at a time. It's one of those places that you walk into and say... well where should I start, then 5 hours later you walk out with 20 books and you spent like 15 bucks and know more about the great depression and canning vegetables than you ever thought you would. I went there Saturday evening and was not impressed. There is no database, so finding things is difficult. The audio books are stacked on the floor, which makes it hard to browse. They wanted to charge me $28 for a used DVD that Walmart sells new for under $20. The man working there was not at all helpful and arrogant. The store is dirty and smells a bit musty. The prices are high for used books and are not priced based on condition. I will never go back there again. There are much better used bookstores in the Hagerstown area. read more

THIS REVIEW IS FOR SELLING BOOKS TO WONDER. I always look forward to my once a month trips to Hagerstown. Even though I go to visit family, I have never missed a trip to Wonder Book. I have spent literally THOUSANDS of dollars in that store over the years. Many high priced books behind glass, and hundreds more off the regular racks. Since my book collection had a number of duplicates, I decided to get a box together to take there to sell. My better half is a collector of rare and antique books. He took 5 to sell. We didn't expect to get a fortune. Not even what we paid. Just something fair. We realize they are in business to make money, not to lose it or break even. I had a copy paper box filled almost to the top with mainly NEW hardcover books. The website says they determine price to pay by condition of book, rarity of the book, and how many they had in stock. That is fair. My better half decided to keep his books separate just to see what he would get and what I would get for mine. The man to came out to the parking lot, ran his thumb up the spines of the books I had in the box, not even looking at them, I suppose to just see if they were all books and not a "filler", and said he would give me $1.00 for the entire box. I was floored. I didn't bicker, it would have been useless, so I just said no. There were maybe 35 books in the box, that's less than 3 cents each. The one book, a Sotheby's collector book was selling used on Amazon for $35., that was the cheapest. And I checked, Wonder Book had NONE in stock, either in the store, or on their computer and it was brand new. So, my other half shows his five books, Again, the man offered $1.00 for all of them. At that point, he realized we were together, said he didn't realize we were together and that all the books would fit into 1 box, which he would then give us $1.00 for. We explained the one book was an 1893 First Edition of a rare book, and the man's reply was "We don't price books individually". Like I said before, we did not expect a fortune. I thought maybe $15-$20. for my box and maybe $25. for his. The man went on to say they only pay $1.00 per box, regardless. Ridiculous. Although I used to love and browse here, this business practice has soured me and I doubt I will return. The books they sell aren't cheap. They are fair, but not cheap. My suggestion to management would be to put a sign in the parking lot that you only pay $1.00 per box, regardless of content and save people some time and aggravation. read more

We visited again last weekend. We drive an hour and a half to go used book shopping and to one of our favorite restaurants. They don't have a bathroom, so we got only as far as the "this just in" shelves. I filled up a handbasket just with those, so if I had been able to pee after the long drive I probably would have filled up two carts' worth. Just sayin'. read more

Also they called about a television series we returned and told us they'd "look into it" when we told them we had already returned it. We didn't hear back and thought they must have found it. This is an excellent used book store, with just about every kind of book you can imagine. I have consistently been impressed with its foreign language section. To the reviewer who only knows the outlets and Little Caesar's, I will thank you to stay in northern VA, where keeping your nose permanently in the air is acceptable. To the customer I saw berating the staff member who couldn't look up titles on the computer and immediately determine whether certain books were in stock, I will thank you to stay at home, too. The entire point of going to a used book store is to search and to discover. Worst Wonderbook EVER. My husband and I have shopped/rented at Wonderbook for years. When they moved to their new location on the other end of town, we slowly reduced our visits since it was out of the way. I went in 2 weeks ago in search of a book. I asked the Manager Nichole how to locate the book. She was very snarky with me and said there was no real way because they used absolutely no shelf method. So I would have to search for hours to find the book. I gave up after 45 mins with No assistance from anyone. Today I went i to rent a DVD and as I went to check out, I was denied by the same snarky manager. Nichole said, I assume you are not a man. I said, you assume correct. Why? She got quiet and said you cannot rent these movies. I asked why? She said that there was a notation to the account that said only my husband could use it. And unless I was (My husbands name here) that she would not rent to me. I asked who placed the notation on the account and that's when everything went down hill, She replied "How should I know, I was not here in 2007" Prob because she was still in grade school in 2007! I called my husband and started to explain the situation and Nichole started to whisper smart remarks to me. I said "Enough already" and she kicked me out of the store. Said She did not have to deal with me and I was never allowed back. I got the managers phone number and I am waiting to here back from her now. Even if we were allowed, we would NEVER rent or buy from Wonderbook again. How dare you talk down to me when you cannot even buy beer!!! read more

I've been going to Wonder Book for as long as i can remember. I spent hours upon hours there with my dad and just wandered around, finding a lot of great books that i still own today. This place is just great. The ability to take your time without feeling crowded or rushed to get out. You can take your time and just enjoy what each book has to offer. I can only hope to bring my kids there in the future and let them enjoy the experience as much as i did. read more

Wonderful store with many treasures to be discovered amongst the shelves. The staff are helpful and aware of trends, authors, etc. There was even a film buff on staff who helped me remember titles that I wanted based on the fews scenes I could remember. Had to call the warehouse once and would rather not have that experience again( Caroline seemed less than happy that she had to take my call). The store is worth your time . read more

the selection of books was great.however my great grandmother who is 86 and on oxygen was denied the restroom and was forced to walk up the hill to aldi's cause that is where the store staff recommended. they were closed and then back to the dollar general where she was finally able to use the restroom. i can understand not letting the general public use the restroom. but an old woman who has trouble getting around anyway. i have spent hundreds of dollars with wonder book and video but they wont be getting any more of my money. read more
