The statues are all identical; however, all have different text on the sides of them. They were all sculpted by St. Louis sculptor August Leimbach. This is one of five that are placed on the Historic National Road. All twelve of the MOTT statues are on the Old Trails Road, which technically doesn't exist. The one complaint that I have about this one are the "No Parking" signs. This is clearly on a roadside pullout that invites people to check this statue as well as the historical markers next to it. But check it out anyway!

Doing a search of the man this is named for doesn't pull up much. But here is what I got from what I could find. Charles A Lewis was a dedicated firefighter and union activist. He loved what he did and was good at it and rose through the ranks at Pittsburgh Fire Department and eventually served as Chief. During his tenure he also served as President of Firefighters Local #1 before becoming Chief. Charles was instrumental is starting the Fill the Boot fundraising campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. It was a big success and went nationwide with other Locals. As far as the land that this parklet sits on, it was once a police station. Closed long ago and sitting there in disrepair. Charles suggested that the use the land to create this parklet for the people of Mt. Washington to enjoy. I will say, he was right. This little parklet has a grotto feel. The brick arch, the mural on the wall, seating and tons of plants everywhere. It's a nice little spot to tank break during a busy day. You almost forget you are at the corner of a busy intersection.

Charles Lewis was the Pittsburgh fire fighter who founded the fill the boot drive, that today, Pittsburgh Fire-fighters still do today. Beautiful architecture makes this a great and idea spot for picnics, killing some time on a warm summer day, or spending time with someone special. There's a beautiful spring house, a blacksmith shop, and a colonial home. The admission is quite reasonable, this is a great way to spend an afternoon. Also of note are the programs, which take place on Sundays, such as Wool Day, Summer Flax Festival, Revolutionary War Encampment, and more.

An ancestor named John Henry built the stone house between 1817 and 1823 on what was then called a plantation. An old will also refers to the dwelling as "the mansion house." They've since put a deck on the back of the place and redid the inside of the house. It's incredible and nicely snuggled inside of Mingo Creek Park and worth a visit.

The Brooke Pioneer Trail connects at its northern end. Using the combination of trails, my husband Rick and I did a 32 mile round trip between Wellsburg and Wheeling. Although the address shown is the parking lot at the southern end of the trail, we connected from the Brooke Pioneer Trail and made our way south. Picking up from where we connected, we continued our way south along the Ohio River. Like the Brooke Pioneer Trail, this path is sandwiched between WV #2 and the river. We continued to enjoy the great river views as we pedaled along. Approaching the north end of Wheeling, we saw a lock and dam. From this point south, the trail became much more urban-like, however it was very well marked and maintained. At this point, Wheeling is very long an narrow because of the topography. We curved a little to the west, temporarily losing the urban feel of the trail as we were in the narrows between the cliffs and the river. Curving again to the south we regained the city atmosphere and had a great view of Wheeling Island. We noticed the tail wasn't as well-marked south of I-70/US-250,but it was still easy to follow. We eventually made our way to the southern terminus & parking lot at 48th Street. We retraced our path north to and we picked up the Wheeling Creek Trail. This trail was built on an old Baltimore & Ohio line and whereas the Ohio River Trail had a city feel to it, the Wheeling Creek Trail was in a park-like setting. The trail didn't parallel the creek in some places--indeed it was adjacent to the interstate in places, but it was still a pleasant, meandering ride towards the eastern edge of the city. The scenic high point was the tunnel near Rock Point Road. After reaching the east end of the trail, we turn around and headed back to Wellsburg. We did every inch of the 32 mile combined trail systems. These trails were an easy ride, paved all the way, and made for a pleaseant day cycling.

Ah, the Liberty Tunnels...aka Liberty Tubes: Connects to…read moredowntown at the base of Mount Washington to and from the South Hills. It's about a mile long and did you know this? One of the world's first tunnels of its kind. Pretty cool. As Pittsburgh grows so does its traffic. These tunnels can be a nightmare to get through with backed up traffic with cars waiting their turn to enter.

When they opened in 1924, they enabled the development of the southern suburbs of the city as it used to be quite the hassle to get over the steep mountainside. The 5,889 foot long tunnels connect with the Liberty Bridge that crosses the Monongahela River and allows direct traffic into downtown Pittsburgh. The tunnels were started in 1919 and completed in 1924 though the ventilation systems were not added until 1928. The tunnels are easy to navigate with two lanes in each direction and a very slight grade. There is no toll to use the tunnel. This place is a great resource for anyone looking to learn more about Carnegie, do research on the…read morearea or even find out about ancestors who lived there. Sure, the place may look like a crazy relative's attic. And it may not be all that organized. But that's part of the charm. One of the highlights is the miniature Main Street circa 1950 that was created by one of the local residents in his later years. There are some great details behind those small windows. They also have a small room of Honus Wagner memorabilia. It's free of charge, but they do ask for donations. If you're lucky enough to be greeted by Bob and Jeff, I recommend spending as much time with them as you can. It's worth just stopping by to meet these two guys with a passion for this town. They are eager to share all their knowledge and stories with you. Jeff even drew me a caricature while Bob gave me the tour. The Historical Society of Carnegie can be a place of nostalgia for the locals or a place of wonder for someone new to the area and exploring it for the first time. Carnegie is lucky to have such a place.

Great for local history…read more We were in Pittsburgh for a school project on Andrew Carnegie so we passed through Carnegie, PA hoping for dinner. Instead we saw the light on after hours and the lone volunteer welcomed us in. The model of the town is fun and it's an Aladdin's Cave for local history. The main attraction is baseball and hometown legend, The Flying Dutchman. All the big sports stations stop by to film some local color for big Pirates games. The volunteers are so generous with their time and enthusiasm. The kids got to hold vintage bats and gloves and wear props for photos. A memorable visit.
