There were two ladies that the counter that were helpful in getting us the information we needed. They have a decent sized private parking lot and a free museum inside with artifacts from the area. There's also a gift shop with handmade items and books for sale. Would highly recommend stopping here first before touring Tennessee's oldest town!

We happened to be in town on a weekend when the museum was closed, which was a small letdown…read morebecause the building has that inviting, lived‑in look that makes you want to step inside and wander for a bit, but even from the sidewalk you can feel the weight of its long history and the marker out front fills in enough of the story to make the stop worthwhile in that quiet Jonesborough way where the past is always just under the surface. It reads, "Built in 1797 by Dr. William P. Chester of Lancaster, Pa., it has been continuously occupied as an Inn, a hotel and an apartment house. Among the guests here have been three presidents of the United States, Andrew Jackson, James K. Polk and Andrew Johnson, as well as John Sevier, Governor of Franklin and first Governor of Tennessee. President Andrew Jackson held a reception for his friends on the porch of the Inn in the summer of 1832." It is marker number 1A-90 and it was erected by the Tennessee Historical Commission. The Museum is a reminder that Jonesborough has always been a crossroads for travelers, politicians, and everyday residents, and even though we couldn't go inside this time, the marker gives you enough context to appreciate the building's long life and to look forward to a return visit when the doors are open again. Just outside the center of Jonesborough, this marker adds a welcome layer of depth to a site that…read moreis easy to miss if you happen to arrive on a quiet holiday morning, as I did. The house itself was closed, which was a small disappointment, but the marker does enough heavy lifting to make the stop worthwhile and to hint at how much early Tennessee history is tucked into this one structure. It stands in a calm corner of town, the kind of place where you can picture the eighteenth century without much effort, and it rewards a moment of unhurried reading. The marker gives some history. "About one mile southwest of this location, this log house was built in 1777 by this officer who was a veteran of the French and Indian War and a major in the American Revolutionary War. He is buried in the family cemetery nearby. Andrew Jackson live here in 1788-89 while practicing law in Jonesborough. The house was moved intact to this site in 1974 to preserve it from demolition." It is marker number 1A-6 and it was erected by the Tennessee Historical Commission. The marker offers a compact but evocative glimpse into Jonesborough's frontier years, and it left me looking forward to a return visit when the house is open again. This is a beautiful and very well-maintained courthouse. Jonesborough is the oldest town in the…read morestate and the history shows through the narrow streets here and the limited parking. Locals refer to the building as the "Taj Mahal of Washington County." Yes, the county is named for George Washington. The original log courthouse was built in 1779 and it was here that General John Sevier and other pioneers began organizing the "State of Franklin" that would have been independent of North Carolina. Although the State of Franklin ultimately failed to gain Congressional recognition, its legacy lives on in the courthouse's symbolic role as a cradle of Tennessee's frontier governance. The current courthouse was completed in 1913 and is in the Classical Revival Style with a red brick façade, four white Ionic columns, a balustrade, and a clock-topped cupola. It is built on the same site as the earlier structures. The original Brazilian mahogany doors have since been replaced. Bummer. Parking here is a challenge and I have no advice on that topic.
