I took the glass lovers weekend course and it did not disappoint! The class was well organized and fun! Our instructors, Patricia and Irwin were a fountain of knowledge and answered any question in depth. All of us newbies were treated patiently and with lots of encouragement. I took the intro to MiG welding with Erwin and it was one of the best things I've done for myself in years! There are only four people in a class due to Covid restrictions so great hands on instruction and no waiting for equipment! They have all the toys- MiG, Tig, flux core, plasma cutters, saws, grinders, sanders, you name it. They provide welding masks and gloves (and you use the same one each class). They also provide material to practice on and you wrap up the class with a project of your own design. It is a very hands on class- so dress appropriately! This is certainly for people new to welding (or returning after being away for a long time). read more

I took the Welding for Dummies class along with 3 friends which was fantastic. Three sessions. Well thought out progression including a didactic portion (the different types of welding, etc), learning and practising basic welding skills and overcoming the initial daunting nature of this art to the uninitiated. Second class was somewhat more advanced techniques, comparative use of different machines. For the 3rd session, we were given free reign to use any of the various available metals to design and create a welding project that could be completed within the 2 hour time frame Erwin is extremely knowledgeable and experienced and very approachable and affable. His course provided a good balance of instruction and observation of our efforts with periods where we were given free range to experiment with the many (fun) gadgets in the shop. He was there for advice and encouragement but not helicopter-like oversight. It is a great introductory course that will help you decide if you have the passion to invest in it as a hobby. Even if you don't, it is time and money well spent for an interesting, fun and creative experience. read more

I was looking for inspiration, something new to excite my soul. At the Adam's Morgan Day Festival I saw a stand on glass making, with beautiful glass bowls and vases to buy and a list of their classes. I signed up for the Glass Lover's Weekend glass. Please note that this review is for the school when they were located at the Navy Yard in SE DC. I won't comment on that neighborhood, and I can't comment on the current one in Mt. Rainer, but I can say a thing or two about the school. The teachers and assistants are awesome. There was no wasted time. We were taught about glass and why certain practices work and others dont for certain types of glass. We made bowl, molds, and plates. It was a great experience. Watching how your ideas can be changed due to heat in the kiln and other substances is really exciting. I made some (IMHO) beautiful pieces. I also went back for another class where I made some curved plates (three in total). It was a very creative experience. One of may plates ended up getting two holes in it (i didn't layer enough) so it now hangs on my wall in glory. Another plate of mine cracked while cooking (what can i say, I was a beginner) and they let me create a new one. The classes are pricey, but well worth it. read more

I took the Glass Table class with Erwin in January 2017. It was great! I've taken several classes over the years here and each has been very good. In the Table Class, Erwin and the TA's provided instruction and guidance on design, metal cutting, welding, glass preparation. Even so, they leave you open to be creative without being heavy handed through the process. I highly recommend going here to learn the art of using glass in Art! read more

saw alot of the schools artists and student work at artomatic and loved all of it. they had some good classes listed online, but was still unsure if i could do it myself. went to one of the open houses, mt rainier is closer than i thought. took the sculpture class, and am hooked on glass. i have gotten my little piece into an art show, am very excited. love it read more

I took the MIG welding class led by Erwin in August 2018, and couldn't have had a better experience. The glass school itself is a fantastic building full of artists work and projects, whilst the course instruction from Erwin is thorough and insightful. You get stuck in handling the equipment and welding from the start, and end the three sessions having created a full project using the many tools and machines available (not only welders). I'd recommend this to anyone thinking about learning to weld either to have fun or take it up as a serious hobby. read more

After the first of the Welding Workshop's three sessions, my teenage son got in the car and said, "THAT WAS WITHOUT QUESTION THE COOLEST THING I'VE EVER DONE." We took the workshop together, and I and absolutely loved it, as well. The space is fabulous, the equipment amazing, and the instruction excellent. There are plenty of materials to play with, and I had a great time during the last session, making a sculpture. I highly recommend this class for other artists as well as anyone interested in just learning to weld. read more

I took the class this weekend. The school has very well equipped studios. It was a great class - our instructor Audrey was extremely helpful, knowledgeable, patient and kind. You don't get usually all these characteristics in one person. The class was small and we got a lot of individual advice and plenty of time to have our questions answered. Definitely got swindled by this "glass school" :( I wanted to do something fun for my boyfriend's bday, so I paid for the glass lovers weekend - $300 per person! For the price, and according to the description on the website, I fully expected to pick him up from his first 4 hr day overjoyed and exhausted from having so much damn fun. That, ladies and gents, did not happen. Apparently this "school"'s teaching methods consist largely of giving you broken pieces of colored glass to arrange over a flat slab of glass and then they put it in a kiln for you at some point during the following week. Now, I wasn't the one who took the class, but it sounds like a horribly expensive children's level art get-together. So a total of 8 hrs sitting around a table playing with small pieces of glass costs $300. Basically I paid for extremely expensive babysitting. There's no way a kiln costs that much to fire! I'm so mad I didn't just spend the extra hundred bucks and buy him 5-6 glassblowing classes. Seriously, seriously disappointed. Not to mention embarrassed- what a lame gift I gave him :/ read more
