Five enthusiastic stars all around! I came in with very, very low expectations after hearing horror stories from all my friends but my whole visit here was one of the best examples of customer service I had in a very long time. Every single person I met from the security guard, to pre-processing, processing, and everyone else was absolutely kind, cheerful, and helpful. We had the first appointment slot of the day -- 8 am -- and they even opened up the doors early to get people started and on their way! I had booked three hours out of my day to go through the line but it took us less than an hour to go through. I brought books and toys to keep my children entertained but nothing was needed -- they even had PBS Kids playing in the background to keep kids entertained during wait times. The security guards made jokes with my babies and checked in us throughout the entire process. I could totally tell he was a girl dad at heart! We will receive our passports in two business days. Instructions were clear and easy to understand. Please note that because of COVID walk-in hours are no longer available and you must make appointments online. I needed an emergency passport so I was given an appointment here. I travel within 14 days. They are very clear about what you need for your appointment online and multiple times while there. I appreciate that as it can sometimes be confusing at the dmv. You walk in, they direct you to the correct area, they check your confirmation number to be sure you have an appointment, not once but twice. Then you go through the metal detector. Then you go to the back to get in line. This area looked like a cross between the dmv and the post office. Lots of kiosks, an area for forms, seating, and a long line. The people at the kiosks were behind glass like at the bank (is this bulletproof proof or something...times have changed). In the line, someone walks up and checks your documents and puts them in a specific order for handing to the person at the kiosk. I walked up and handed my pre-arranged packet of personal information like I would with the soup nazi (two steps forward, two steps to the right, hand out - slides packet into narrow window hole). They typed in some gibberish, asked my confirmation number, checked the documents again, and provide me with a waiting number. I then sit to wait to be called to another kiosk. The wait was not long though about 15 minutes or so. I get called up, asked a few questions, I slide my stuff through a narrow window again. She explains the timelines and the price, has me complete one more form. Takes my payment and my very sensitive documents, and sends me on my way. I left feeling as naked as could be without my documents but I was assured I'd have them and my passport within a few days. Parking was like standard DC parking, garage across the street, rare street parking, and the occasional lot parking. I parked across the street and it was $24 dollars and the garage was so confusing to navigate. It seemed to go one forever, and I almost got stuck in the stairwell. On one side the doors did not open up on every floor. Talk about scary. I ended up just walking up the ramps where the cars travel which can be dangerous with traffic. I came in with low expectations but this is probably the best government office I've ever been to. Yeah there was a bit of waiting, but they handled it as well as they could. The system itself should be improved, but the employees here can only work within the system that exists. Every single employee was friendly and helpful. I was shocked. Submitted passport renewal in April. They received it 4/26/23. I am traveling Aug 6. Called yesterday and paid to expedite. But I got a letter today saying they need a certified copy of my marriage certificate which I had already included. Locator 69 Why wouldn't they tell me there was a problem with my passport when I spoke to them yesterday? I called again today after the letter and she said I have to comply with the letter and submit that. I only had one certified copy and they already have it! Not sure what to do now. The five stars is solely for the experience at the Washington Passport Agency, /not/ the absurd scheduling process State is currently using for appointments. After I was told that the only available appointment for a passport was on the other side of the country the day before my travel, and then being offered a newly opened spot in Philly that filled up before I could reserve it, I wound up with an appointment here (which was close to me)... but only 45 minutes after I scheduled it. I figured I might as well give it a shot, but given the unexpectedly quick timeline, I showed up woefully underprepared. I didn't have my act together AT ALL, but the staff working here were very helpful and guided me to get through the process remarkably smoothly. I don't recommend going in unprepared. I was lucky and it turned out that I had the bare minimum they needed to help me, even though it wasn't everything I should have had. It could have worked out differently. But, the people working here could have easily gotten away with sending me home empty handed, but they cared enough to help where they could. read more

I actively see these passport centers replying to reviews on yelp. Why can't they just tell us what the hold up is instead of responding to reviews...? Or better yet figure out a better system to process all these applications? For anyone who is curious, three different agents told me it's a mad dash when and if an appointment becomes available in the system. It's one system for the entire country, for all locations. And appts usually get booked within seconds. First agent I spoke to saw one appt open up during her entire shift and it was in Arizona in the next 30min. Second agent said he saw one cancellation in the two hours he had been working but wasn't able to book it himself. And third agent didn't see anything all day but saw one the day before. So you just have to get really lucky and be on the phone at the right millisecond to get an appt... For us, our congressional representative has been super responsive but all they could do was send the processing agency a note. And all we can do is wait. So we're just hoping we get our passport in time before our 6/21 flight. We applied in February expedited. They sent a letter for an additional proof of name change because apparently a marriage certificate wasn't enough and they required an additional court order... what? Feels like they intentionally want to delay the process. I'm curious about the people who left reviews and it is now past their travel date. I wonder if anyone actually got their passport in time... Applied for a passport with expedited service for our 1 year old. The system never flagged our application as expedited so they made us pay for it a second time because that's the only way State employees can get an application to flag as expedited. They have no control of the process otherwise. It's now week 9 and no one can tell us where the application is, if the expedited request has been attached, or when we will receive it. On top of that there is no availability at any passport agency in the country where we can wait in line for an emergency request. I am willing to fly from Ohio to Detroit to do this but was told it's not possible. I understand Covid caused a backup but it seems to me like all channels and departments across the board are functioning at a low level of professionalism and not the standard the citizens of this country are sold. read more

We submitted passport applications in March for me and my son. We paid expedited to be safe given the demand. We were quoted 7-9 weeks which would have been May 24th. It is now June 7th. I received my passport in April, but we have not received our son's. His has shown processing since March 22nd. We leave for vacation on June 17th. Please help us. We are in contact with Senator Van Hollen and Cardin's offices, and Congressman Hoyer. This is a very expensive trip for our family to see grandparents that live abroad and don't have US visas. We live in MD and his application is in DC. I also want to say that making people who applied wait 5 days to request an appointment seems absurd. Someone who didn't apply is able to request 14 days out. It's almost like they're being rewarded for not planning in advance. Please help! read more

The passport agency is downtown. There is a circulator bus stop several blocks away. There are also garages in the area. I renewed my passport here. You can also apply for a passport. Any form you need is available on the web site. If you don't have passport pictures, there is a photo service located on the same block (genius). Costco and Walmart have passport photo services. We had an appointment, which helped speed up the process. You can also walk in without an appointment. When you enter the building, there is a table with employees who will let you know what items you are missing or what forms you need. Renewing a passport is easier than applying for one. If you need a passport in a hurry, there is an expedited fee of $60. Depending on your circumstances, it is possible to get a passport the next day. I didn't see the need to purchase a passport ID card since it had limited use. The larger passport (more pages) for frequent travelers cost the same as a regular passport. It is easier to get through security with less items. Hubby had to take his belt off. I didn't want anything sent in the mail. Our circumstances allowed us to pick up our passports the next day (by paying the rush fee). I was happy I was able to keep my expired passport. There are strict rules to enter the office. If you follow them, you won't have any issues while in the building. read more

If you're reading this with fear, anger, and anxiety first take a deep breath, chill out -- you're going to get your passport. You probably ended up here in the review section scanning frantically for some reassurance because you didn't follow the rules, were too cheap to pay the expedited fee, or something similar. (If not, just go ahead and pay the $60 fee because if not in the long run you'll be paying more anyways). I submitted my passport back in early November due to a name change and received a letter 1/9 that my photo was invalid. I was due to fly to Belize for a rescheduled honeymoon on 1/20 and was immediately freaking out. I did have to continue calling the passport office appointment line for several days before obtaining an appointment at this location. Arrive early, make sure you have EVERY document and ensure it is completed. Leave yourself ample time to park and enter through security. I had a 9:00 appointment and got there at 8:20 and was able to start the process. Paula was super helpful and had my information processed and ready for pickup within 3 hours. I paid $95 ($60 expedite, $35 reprocessing fee to void original passport application) and top of the $130 renewal. I was also given the option to wait for the passport or come back the next day for pick up. read more

These people were amazing! I realized in the middle of the night that I didn't have my passport with me in DC, and I was supposed to fly to Germany that evening. I was able to get an 8am appointment in the DC passport center, and they had my passport ready before noon. And they were nice about it! I have been waiting for my passport for weeks. I am terrified that I will not have my passport in time and my trip is scheduled for 06/23. I completely understand being short staffed with an large work load, but my passport application was received on 03/17 so I should have my passport by now. My trip has been paid for, and I don't even have insurance for it. I've emailed twice to have it expedited, and they never even charge my card. Now I simply cannot afford the expedited fee. It's infuriating to even request my application be expedited since I've been waiting patiently for this to be approved. Today was my second time at this location. The first time I went, I had to expedite a passport for myself. This time around, I had to bring my two minor children to get their passports expedited because we were traveling in less than three days. The last time I was here, every person that assisted me was professional and courteous. Somehow, today was just the opposite of that experience. The female worker that checks the application and paperwork before you stand in line was rude and impatient. She was talking down to other customers including myself. If you had a bad day, do not take it out on other people. She needs to get some training because she lacks professionalism and good customer service. read more

The jury is out on this place. It's a fairly well-oiled machine for how busy it is. Most people here are here for some desperate reason or other with last-minute travel plans requiring a passport in just a few days (or hours in some cases). Be prepared to wait. And wait. And wait. The line to check in for appointments was like 45 people long and took about 25 minutes to navigate. The ladies at the desk checking documents and materials swere friendly and efficient. Once past that you clear a TSA-type security to get to the other side where an expanse of glass-walled window/booths (think DMV) await. There, you'll stand in line again to have your paperwork reviewed again and be issued the correct waiting ticket number to be called to a window for help. Plenty of seats as you wait for your window to call you and decent bathrooms are located around the corner. In my particular case I have three weeks before I travel but need a visa for the country I'm going to - which can usually take 2-3 weeks. This trip is last-minute for me and the 6 month left on passport got me this time. Not all countries require that. Otherwise I'd be fine. Bummer. The staff are mostly friendly but not especially reassuring. After paying the heavy $60 expedite fee ($200 total) I was told it "might" be ready this afternoon between 2-5pm but I have to be back inside through security by 3pm to sit and wait for my name to be called by 5pm. No one will know. I'll just have to wait. They said I can check online and I specifically asked if that's up to date and updated often and was told yes - but online it says "not found" and SIA passport info is not shown there and you have to call and sit on hold. So she straight up lied to me. It's not there. You can't really check before you go to wait. You just show up and hope. I'm not from here at all so coming back for several days in a row isn't possible. Sigh. Hoping for the best!!! This is in the heart of downtown so there are some metered spots from 10am-3pm and other times and a parking lot directly across with valet parking for $12 for one hour of $21 max for the day. I chose that But it's steep. Bonus - lots of coffee shops and food nearby if you're in for an all day thing like me. read more

The facility and all of us employees were absolutely fabulous. They were quick and efficient. Very kind and patient as people under a lot of stress try to produce documents and turn in the appropriate items. The manager was walking the floor, announcing guidance and working calm stressed visitors. When they realize that many of these appointments, where do you to the failure of the online renewal system, they started redirecting Manny of the applicants in line straight to a specialist since an application was already in progress. You could tell the manager and his team had a great work environment. He was clearly focused on efficiency in the moment, not executing established but outdated processes. This would be most efficient government facility I have ever visited. This is not a review supporting appointment system currently in place. That was absolutely terrible. I spoke with one person who was flipping disrespectful. And told me they were no appointment across all three locations without even checking. I called back the same system a minute later, and spoke with someone else. they informed me that there were many appointments. So if you need an appointment call back multiple times. In regards to the response in comment below, I did just that... I went to the site and printed out all of my documents and presented it in a folder. Unfortunately, one of the workers didn't feel the document was necessary. I was then later called back to drop it off, and that's where the chaos began for me. I understand that the office is busy during this time. However, had that person taken all of my forms, I would have been out within an hour (which I was perfectly okay with). Being that this was a mistake on your end, I should have not had to wait that ridiculous amount of time that I did when I went back to bring the document that the worker felt wasn't needed, and I should not have been given poor customer service on top of it. This was not a mistake on my behalf! A simple apology would have been enough. read more

I submitted the expedited passport applications for my family in March. We received all but but my sons passport. We got a letter in the mail that there was an issue but it didn't say what the problem was!! We sent back all documents again to make sure we had our bases covered. It's been 4 weeks since we sent that back with no word. We have spent hours on hold on the phone and can never get an answer. We are now within 7 days of our travel with no passport. We are being told there are no available appointments in the country even if we fly to a different state! I made an appointment on February 27 at my local USPS to renew my five-year-old daughter's passport. Her application was accepted at the facility (USPS Engleside/Alexandria) at the appointment. At that time I did not request it be expedited because I thought 8-11 weeks to receive a passport would be plenty of time since we were traveling in June. in May I received in the mail a letter from the State Department that says my "application was not properly executed by the passport acceptance agent." The letter also said the state department was holding on to my daughter's old passport, original SSN card, and original birth certificate. I returned to the USPS Engleside the next day and showed them the letter. They were aware of the error they made and said it happened to a few other folks' applications. I had to retake my daughter's photo, and resubmit her application. USPS sent her application overnight to the passport agency in Sterling, Virginia. I called the Statement Department the day after it was delivered to confirm that they received it and they were not able to give me any relevant information. I requested that they expedite her application since we were traveling in a month and the error on her application was made by the passport acceptance agent and not by us. They said I could put in a "request" to expedite, but that doesn't mean that it would be accepted. I submitted the request to expedite via email per their instruction the Same day. To this date, my credit card has not been charged for the expedited application and shipping, and when I check the status of her application on the website it says "in process" It takes three days to get ahold of anyone at the passport agency after many attempts calling and waiting on hold. I engaged my Senator's office, but have not received any relevant update on my case. We are traveling in two weeks I asked for an in person appintmebt and they said I. Red to call back 5 days before departure to see if I can get an appointment , but how am I suppose to do that if it takes three days to get ahold of anyone on the phone!? read more

I Have applied and expedited my application June 26th and its been 4 weeks now. I leave on August 6th out the country for school and need to be there. One time i called and the lady was really rude and just hang up on me and couldn't even ask questions.The agency has been really confusing , they told me i need a ticket and proof so i bought the ticket and told me to call back 14 days prior to my flight and called them back to get an appointment and all they said was they will send a letter to the agency for urgency travel and that to call back 5 days before the flight and called them again and now they cant get me any appointments and theres nothing they can so . I made a passport appointment for my infant as soon as I had his birth certificate. His appointment was on 5/15/21. At that time the website said it could take up to 12 weeks. It has now been over 9 weeks and the status still says "not available". We are traveling to Northern Ireland on 8/10/21. What can I do?
