This is a hidden gem. The food quality is very high. They cook food for the best way for us to eat. We love healthy choices in the menu. We always come here after walk at the park.

First time visit to Duke Farms, Hillsborough,NJ Close to I78 in western side on NJ and a true hidden treasure! Whether to walk, job or bicycle there is soooo much to take in. There is an Orientation Center (check for hours open) which was closed the Tuesday we explored but, no worries, we picked up a brochure and started walking. Bring water and snack and have a great day!

A beautiful park and gardens to wander! The grounds are extensive so you can take different paths each time you go and have a different experience. The orchid green house is a real highlight and so incredibly beautiful! They also have a cafe which serves breakfast and lunch. The menu is creative and food is very tasty.

My friend and I had a wonderful day at Duke Farms . The place is absolutely magnificent and we spent hours exploring the grounds. My only complaint is that there could be more signs. Even through the map was helpful, we were constantly confused as to where we were, what things were, and how to get to the next site.

    Cynthia A.

Such a beautiful and picturesque place. Went for the first time today and I was in awe at how large the place was. I didn't have a map but decided to just follow along the signs and it was pretty self explanatory to follow to the main areas. If you're looking for somewhere to just get a way to go for a walk, ride your bike or read then this is the perfect place. It's so large that you can easily feel like you're there by yourself. It was a bit hard to find the meditation garden as there wasn't a direct path leading up to it but the landmark is the red bridge. All in all I all I will definitely be back in the spring to explore more of the grounds. Bonus points for this place being Free and there's parking !!!

The words "hidden gem" must have been invented to describe the incredibleness of Duke Farms. Literally nestled and tucked away off of a highway, down a very long path and entirely out of the way. There is so much insane beauty here... and it is free to the public?! It just doesn't make sense in the best way. My tips for visiting Duke Farms: -Go during the week (if you can, of course) to avoid the crowds. And have hassle free parking. -Rent a bike unless you want a very leisurely experience and don't care about not seeing everything. -Don't worry about not seeing everything! It's a huge space and you'll want to just make a relaxing day of it. -Don't have all day? I recommend the orchid room. It's a magnificent greenhouse filled with so many different types of orchids (so many plants I never realized were categorized as orchids) as well as other beautiful plants. It's incredible and I could have spent all day there. -Get a map or download the app! It became crucial to finding my way in and out. -Wear comfy shoes because this is A BIG space and walk or bike you'll be moving quite a bit. They have a cafe if you need a bite or drink but I recommend bringing food for a little picnic somewhere on the grounds. It's 100% worth the trip if you aren't from the are. Definitely one of Jersey's hidden gems.

LOTS of level, paved walking. Enjoyed the Orchid Building. So many different, beautiful varieties. This is my second time here and I STILL haven't made it to the meditation garden. Next time, I'll probably rent one of your bikes to make it there. Well manicured grounds. Just beautiful place to take in.

    Claudia S.

VERY Beautiful grounds .. I suggest renting bikes so you really can see it all but you can walk it. We took our own and it's FREE to go in. If you go over to the the Great Falls check the times it only flows every 2 hours. The greenhouse with all the orchids was so pretty. We loved it !! They also do have a cafe if you want to grab a bite to eat. Go and enjoy the day

I was finally off on a Saturday, so we went to Duke farms for a morning walk. This is still considered off-season, so there is no bike rental and you don't need a parking permit until April 1. We were two of a handful of people there at 8:30 am so we enjoyed the calm and quiet surroundings, only the sounds of birds as we took various trails off the paved path. We didn't do the whole place, maybe we'll come back and see the arboretum later in the season when everything is blooming. The orchid range is a real highlight-better than longwood gardens' orchid display imo.

You better bring your walking shoes!

Duke Farms is a sprawling site that I wanted to love, but I didn't. If you're looking for a place to accrue 10,000+ steps on your pedometer, come here. If you don't want to walk, and prefer to rent a bike, you can do that. There is no entrance fee and they have large maps, in order to guide you through the 1,000 acres.  Duke Farms does have a nice eatery, which you will see as soon as you enter the property. I ordered melon slices, and an Iced Cafe Latte, and they were good starters before trekking out into the wild. The farm has a nice structure called, the Hay Barn. It is nicely adorned with beautiful statues and landscaping. As you work your way through the farm, you'll come upon the Orchid Range. There, you will walk inside a green house that is full of orchids. It is very nice and a welcomed moment out of the sun. The Arboretum section of the farm is very nice, as well. You'll see a tranquil Meditation Garden, which you will traverse a beautiful Japanese bridge, in order to reach. Overall, Duke Farms is a nice place to check off your list and enjoy the long stroll through the many acres.

A beautiful and expensive property. Duke Farms is a wonderful place to walk, bike, hike or stroll. I'd love to return with my bike to cover more ground. The highlight of my last visit was definitely the greenhouse which had a ton of amazing plants and hanging greenery. Another highlight was the on-site cafe which had really high quality farm to table food. I enjoyed a BLT with fresh mozzarella. The sandwich had heirloom tomatoes which were so sweet. My dad had a cobb salad that also had a ton of fresh veggies and looked fantastic. There are lots of wide pathways so it was really easy to walk my baby around in her stroller. It was a bit buggy, so if you are doing the same definitely bring a bug net! A short review for a short and pleasant visit to Duke Farms. A great place for some fresh air and beautiful flowers, and especially to bike ride so you can see lots of the sites.

(This was a few months ago so the details could be a bit iffy.)…read more This was a very impromptu trip and everything at Edge of the Woods makes doing that easy. Head to the website, book the date & time you want and you're done. www.watergapadventure.com/river-trips A few things worth noting: They offer multiple trip lengths. The standard 4-, 6- and 10-mile trip (Smithfield to Portland) are all booked generically and then when you get there you tell them what you want to do. All pricing is the same which believe me compared to others companies, that's very different - in a good way. They do offer two other longer trips but those require calls to the main office I assume to assess river conditions; your own competency and shuttle availability. The main office in Delaware Water Gap is very easy to find and there was plenty of parking on a quiet post-Labor Day Monday. You check in, you're handed a laminated map, life jacket and given a brief route explanation and then you're off in the van. One problem arose and it was kind of a PIA but it was worked around. Most companies have different types/sizes/models of kayaks and quite often, will ask you what you prefer. Not here. When we left the office, the guy driving didn't say a word to me until we get to Smithfield Beach to unload. He had a few kayaks pre-loaded in the carrier but definitely did not look at them before we left. One of them had a broken foot pedal that he said couldn't be used, another was very much designed for a smaller individual (i.e. if you're taller and/or taller & larger it ain't happening safely) which only left two tandem models. Using a tandem as a single individual is not the end of the world but especially when the seats are still left in the two person configuration (i.e. one front and one back versus the rear one being placed more towards the middle), it's a PIA to maneuver the craft and you are paddling harder to get the job done compared to a single. The scenery along the route was decent. You could see a bit of the Shawnee Resort and Golf Course, an old stone bridge abutment in the middle of the river, under and along 80 and then when you get into the Water Gap itself with the high cliff sides. Very picturesque. Once you go under the old train viaduct in Portland, you give the office a call for the shuttle to meet you at the out point which is at the Portland Pedestrian Bridge. The whole experience was about four hours door to door to cover the ten miles on the water plus the shuttle to & from the pick up and drop off points. Lots of nice scenery, due to the low water level there wasn't much in the way of current except for the area around viaduqt in Portland and even that wasn't bad. I'm not a big fan of the equipment here but I wouldn't let that deter me from coming back in the future for one of their northern longer trips.

I visited on a weekday and perhaps that made all the difference in the world. My experience form beginning to end was fantastic. I think one thing that seems to bother most people is the BBQ lunch. The BBQ lunch was apart of my package and when I arrived they were just loading the buns to be taken out on the river. I'm getting a little ahead of myself here but you'll understand in a minute. When I arrived, there were already several eager adventurous folks checking in, buying waterproof items for sale, collecting their water rafts and some even already on the water. I checked in with my Groupon and as directed, I left my keys - collected my Kayak and proceeded to the bus. Please note, the rule is, everyone must wear a mask until you're actually on the water; great rule as it gets crowded in the shop as well as on the bus. It keeps everyone safe. I chose the kayak experience which was awesome but the real fun is in a tube. After my journey down the river, I immediately purchase another Groupon just so that I could come back and have a tubing experience. So, back to the BBQ lunch. By the time I paddles my way down (a few signs for the waters edge for direction) to the BBQ shack on the water, they were still setting up. I guess I paddle too fast. I decided to keep moseying down the river as I had already packed a lunch just in case after reading the reviews about the BBQ shack not being up and running. Oh well, next time I'll enjoy a burger. Again, this is the perfect mid week escape. The ride outside of NY is quick and there's plenty of parking. Although it says Delaware tubing it's actually located in New Jersey; well at least the border between the two. I would recommend going early and taking as much time as you like in a tube with family and friends. I would also recommend bringing children as they will develop a lifelong love of being on the water. I'm a big fan now and I can't wait to return in a few weeks. P.S. I was told by my bus driver, they offer a fall foliage experience where they only allow kayaks on the river.

Nothing notable to report but not overwhelmingly great either. The last time I went with the Boy Scouts was one of the worst weekends of my life. There was some river guide who named himself "zombie". He has the worst chip on this shoulder ever. First, he got nearly naked on the bus clearly wanting to show off all his tattoos. Inappropriate in front of a bunch of kids. If he was discreet then fine. He was showboating and it was gross. Then while on the river, I splashed with a paddle. It is indeed against the rules and I was wrong for that. However I knew I messed up the second I did it. A reminder would have been sufficient. Oh no. Zombie came over immediately and berated me loudly in front of everyone (including the kids). Yikes. I said "understood, I'm sorry". He then continued saying he was "gonna hike me out of 'his' trip" if he saw it again. What? He was going to evict me from the boat in the middle of nowhere and walk me home? Alone? What the hell is wrong with this guy? I don't care how capable or good of a river guide he is. If he's going to talk to customers who paid for the trip like garbage, then he doesn't belong there (especially around kids). Major jerk. Then we camped there overnight. Some camp site decided to have a rager party. Like thumping music turned up to full volume that could be heard for miles. No one came to quiet them down. At midnight I had to walk over myself and ask if they could please let us sleep. They said no and it kept going. I called the campsite phone # and got a voicemail. No one was there to help. Needless to say we didn't sleep at all. Just a generally unpleasant experience. You need to get rid of this zombie person. You can't call yourself "zombie" then demand to be taken seriously. So when I found out there was a 5.7-mile hike in the immediate vicinity of Bridgewater/Somerville, I was pretty skeptical. This is a pretty chaotic section of the state, with a lot of major highways interconnecting and a mall and heinous traffic circle thrown in for good measure - it's not the first or 100th place I'd think of for a hike. That remains the case. You can't force the design of a hike, and this is a clear example of a situation where you should have had, say, a mile's worth of trails and left it at that. My chum and I came here on Saturday to take advantage of the unseasonably warm early December weather. It was mostly cloudy throughout the hike, but the temperature steadily rose and the sun was largely out by the end. It had been raining pretty steadily the prior day so we were expecting and encountered a lot of mud and some mild rock hopping, but nothing egregious. Both of us opted for running shoes over hiking/trail shoes; it was a LITTLE rockier than I expected and in hindsight I would have gone with the latter for better support, but I didn't suffer any consequences for the decision. Our trek started at the entrance/parking lot off of Newmans Road (spacious, easy to spot with a pretty clean port-a-potty; there were drops on the seat but that's people being animals and not a reflection on the park) following the red trail running roughly parallel to the Washington Valley Reservoir before crossing Chimney Rock Road and heading up and down the orange trail in a quasi loop that runs alongside the East Branch Reservoir before another brief foray on a road (this one Gilbride Rd) and then doing another loop on the yellow trail that goes up to the Chimney Rock Outlook before circling back to Gilbride, at which point you basically complete the prior orange loop and then head back on the other side of the Washington Valley Reservoir to the parking lot. If that sounds overly complicated, you're right. There are two huge issues that mar this hike for me. One is that whoever designed the trails/blazes for this place had no idea what they were doing. Literally every possible trail and offshoot is painted with a blaze, always the same color as the "main" trail. As such, it's incredibly difficult to follow an official hiking itinerary because every fork in the trail has two choices with the same color blaze. Incredibly foolish and short-sighted. We had to VERY carefully stop each time, look at the map in our book AND double-check the GPS/map on the AllTrails app (which I hate doing) just to make sure we were on the right path. There's no reason to put a blaze on literally any walkable route like that; no idea what they were thinking. The other problem is what I alluded to earlier - this is a populated area with minimal room to hike so you end up by definition having to cross and briefly walk alongside busy roads. Chimney Rock was incredibly busy midday on Saturday, and cars were whizzing by us the entire time (the first section was probably about two minutes long, while the second was five minutes - believe me, it felt longer). I'm stunned people don't get hit there, especially since there's not a lot of room off to the side for pedestrians. If you're at the point where you're brainstorming a hiking trail and you can't avoid having the hikers come into contact with moving vehicles, that's probably a clue to scrap the plans. The big selling point of this hike is Chimney Rock, which was apparently a lookout point for George Washington during the Revolutionary War. That's all well and good, but for the money they spent to put up a protective fence and pave the trail here, they couldn't be bothered to maintain the actual rock, which is covered by broken beer bottle glass. And I'm sure General Washington had a much prettier view back in the day than we did; we were treated to the gorgeous scenery of the Stavola Bound Brook Quarry - crushed stones as far as the eye can see! The best part of the hike by far was the last section on the northern side of the Washington Valley Reservoir, and this is the part I'd actually preserve for walking, etc. It definitely helped that the sun was out at this point, but there was a cute bridge and a lot of bird activity. My chum is an avid birdwatcher and will likely be returning to this part with her camera. We also encountered a fallen tree (picture attached) that was taken down by a beaver. Very cool sighting. Head over to Watchung Reservation if you're in the area and want to commune with nature. You may hear the sounds of Route 78 but at least you won't be crossing that highway as part of your hike.

The Washington Valley State Park parking lot is basically a hidden driveway with a small,…read moreinconspicuous sign that suddenly pops up out of nowhere after you've been driving for a while on Newmans Lane. Recommend using GPS to navigate lest you miss the entrance. The park is also accessible from Vosseller Avenue at Millers Lane, though Google Maps will default to Newmans Lane when you chart a route to "Washington Valley State Park". The Newmans Lane entrance seems to be popular with mountain bicyclists and dog walkers. The highlights of this park are the Washington Valley Reservoir and raptor watching in autumn. Otherwise, the trails are pretty low-key (boring even) which make for some relatively quiet walks, which are only interrupted occasionally by the sound of scurrying chipmunks and teenagers jumping into the reservoir in the summer. As another reviewer noted, some of the more remote parts of the trails are not thoroughly blazed, but you should be able find your way even without trail markers. Be sure to grab a park brochure from the wooden bulletin board at the trailhead if you need help navigating. The brochures are also great for swatting away gnats. The red trail has a lot of rocks/gravel and multiple changes in elevation, so you might want to wear shoes with sturdy soles and firm grip. The reservoir does not have a boat ramp but has various trails and rock formations for shoreline fishing (license required, of course). Random trivia: back in 2015, a convicted sex-offender was sighted here fishing before being arrested. With that being said, remember to curb your dog and be sure to leave before the park officially closes 1/2 an hour after sunset.
