This review is about the mall only and not any of the stores. This mall has a lot of potential, but has really fallen on hard times. There are more stores closed than open and the mall exterior needs some major TLC. There were very few patrons in the mall. It had a strange feel to it. There were more workers than shoppers. The mall does have some real hard workers that are very friendly in the stores, most of which are small and/or local business. I like to support local, but someone needs to take over management of the mall and put some money into it. I could not find a food court or bathroom while I was in there. The mall may have had them but I just could not find them. The mall has a reputation for being rough and unsafe. The area that it is in may not be the best, but I never felt in danger during my daytime visit. I don't think I would recommend going here just to shop around, but if you have a specific destination in the mall in mind, go for it. read more

I've been a resident of Indianapolis my entire life. I remember when Washington Square Mall was a Simon mall. I remember when it was a vibrant, busy mall with a unique design that made it a rather fun place to shop. While one could possibly argue it's always been one of the lesser malls in Indy, for many years it held its own and served Indy's Far-Eastside pretty well. I'd been to Washington Square maybe 3-4 years ago, partly because I wanted to visit the adjacent Target and partly because I was just a little bit curious about a mall that had a reputation for having gone way downhill. What did I find? It was clearly deteriorating, but it still had a little bit of charm to it. It was probably about half full with locally owned businesses, but you couldn't help but wonder if it had any hope of surviving. I was in the area today and wanted to do a little bit of wheeling for exercise. I figured "Why not check out the mall?" Oy vey. Washington Square Mall is officially a dump. I mean it. Seriously. There's officially no legit reason to ever go near it, despite the fact that a handful of national chains continue to keep their shops open including Target (though the entrance from the mall is now closed), Burlington Coat Factory (I'd check the coats for lice here), Bed, Bath & Beyond (It's more like Bed, Bath, & Be Careful), and Victoria's Secret (The Secret is shame and low self-esteem). I believe there may be a Dick's Sporting Goods in here, though it may have actually closed. Truthfully, it was hard to tell with the handful of customers who seemed to be more meandering about than actually shopping. The vast majority of the stores seem to either be variations of nail salons, hair styling, small gift shops, a handful of ethnic restaurants, and at least a couple churches including longtime mall establishment Movie Theater Church. There are at least a couple of entire wings that seem to be shut down, though in some cases it's simply true that the stores open for select hours such as evenings only or weekends only. Judging from the complete lack of customers, the notion of being open 40 hours a week here is kind of silly. While this mall has experienced crime, fairly regularly, the truth is I never actually felt unsafe except for one particularly unusual wing of the mall where almost everything was closed and people kept coming out of one particular spot. They didn't bother me. I didn't bother them. However, it's also worth noting that the lighting in the mall is haphazard at best, the automated doors are in disrepair, any notion of decor has gone way out the window (much worse than Eastgate before it finally closed), and, at the risk of coming off the wrong way, at least 2/3 of these stores gave off the kind of aura that made you think better than using a credit card because you weren't quite sure who would end up with the numbers. Unfair? Perhaps, but the vibe was undeniable. The truth is that I love dives. I live in a rough area. I'm not hesitant to go anywhere, but I truly can't fathom a reason I will now ever go back to this run down retail outlet that is in serious, and I'd dare say unsafe, disrepair from the parking lot to the hallways to a good majority of the stores. You know how you kind of laugh at the Segway riding, completely unarmed mall cops in other malls? At Washington Square, mall security is packin' (but actually rather friendly!). The Far Eastside seriously needs this mall to work or to give way to some sort of different retail outlet. As is? For the handful of stores you might like, it's worth driving out of your way to go to safer, cleaner, and more customer friendly locations in other parts of the city. read more

The only reason why I say yes because if you fix this dang mall up it will be a nice place to shop but right now it looks like crap . I would love someone to fix this mall because this mall in my opinion is 100% to pretty to just let sit there and do nothing with and rot . Please fix this mall and I liked the style of the Christmas lights hanging up . But add those re-model the mall to a simple modern style and add decent stores and a parking garage and this is a perfect recipe for the malls success Also bring back the giant carousel in the middle of the mall and Christmas lights and maybe add some haunted houses for Halloween in abounded buildings around the mall and or welcome center / convention center , Indiana , Eastside , , Indianapolis , Cumberland , greenfield , Irvington , e Washington street souvenir shops . Hey also you should make advertisements saying that this mall is the best in the world and why people should come to it and how it beats other malls in the us and rest of the world. There has been so much bad press and negative things beings said about Washington Square Mall that I decided as a lifelong Eastside resident to go to the mall today to see for myself exactly what is going on. I met Keith Lee Jr. He is a fine young man with a good head old his shoulders. There are many lights out in the parking lot. I also saw and talked to a couple of the new security guards. Keith was busy making sure that everyone had their hoodie pulled up.There were a few people walking. The times are changing and the way we live and shop is changing too. So many people talk about shopping local, there are many locally owned mom and pop stores. You will still find those big name shoe stores too. I will post pictures of as many of the different stores as I am allowed. Please check them out. Notice how clean and neat the mall and the stores are. I'm glad to see this mall stayed open after this crazy pandemic hit. However, if you want people to hang out and shop you need to cool it down. We went Sunday to get out for a bit and see what stores were still open and the temperature was miserable. We literally left because it was so warm. You can't enjoy shopping, especially in a mask if it's 80* inside. Plus it isn't fair for your tenants. It was nice to see Carnaval Popcorn, Bath & Bodyworks and a few others still in business. The marijuana smell by Kids Footlocker was pretty overpowering as well. The least they could do is smoke outside. I really hope this mall gets revived because it truly has a lot of potential and used to be the spot to hang out years ago. read more

I went to Washington Square Mall in search of two items, one of which I had been looking high and low for. Found both and enjoyed browsing other stores. It's not what it used to be, but it's still a decent place to shop. Lifelong shopper, still going. read more

Washington Square has become quite depressing... We shop at the Target next door a few times a year and every once in a while, stop by the mall to see how that's looking. Nowadays, there are mostly obscure little pawn shops and empty stores. Many of the lights are out in the walkways and parts of the mall look flat out abandoned. The once quite thriving Washington mall is gone, leaving a perfect example of how many malls are unable to compete with online stores and therefore dying off. The one store I saw that I really liked was the bath and body works. We walked in there and were pleasantly surprised to see an old friend we had lost touch with. She recently got a job at B&BW and she's loving it. I also quite enjoyed the pop-up lego sale that was being hosted in the center of the mall. There were buckets and buckets of legos and you could buy them buy the bag/box, specifically selecting each and every piece if you wanted to. If not for the signs outside advertising the sale, I doubt we would've came in the mall today. We may be back if there's another sale or just to see our old friend, but probably not otherwise.. read more

I am visiting and on every trip I buy a pair of shoes. The foot action and finish line have some up to date sneakers and great sales on some of them, but I went to Grails Inc and was blown away with some of the vintage DS sneakers they have its 3 of them one in Washington square one in Castleton square and one in greenwood park mall. I haven't been to the other two but if their anything like the one in Washington square. I might regret cutting my trip short read more

The anchor stores at this mall are Burlington Coat Factory, Target, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Sears. There's a BW-3's in the mall and there are a few other smaller food court type options for food too. The place is absolutely crawling with security, including real police officers. Simon has worked really hard with the community to bring this area back from the brink. A few short years ago, the mall was almost totally vacant. Now there are a variety of small shops like Bath and Body Works, Finish Line, and Claire's, a movie theater, several churches which call the mall home, and even a "shop" that is dedicated to rehoming animals: ReTails. These animals are strays and owner surrenders which come in on Friday night and stay until Sunday night, hoping for new homes. The adoption fees are very affordable and ReTails is run entirely by volunteers. How cool is that? This is a lower income area. Shoppers don't need to be sucked into financing puppy mill pups by typical mall pet stores. Check ReTails out next time you're looking for a dog. The weekend I found a home for Rags (the FIV+ stray cat I had been feeding), there were many purebred dogs: chihuahua, dachshund, shih-tzu, as well as an adorable black and brindle tripod (3 legs) who was wagging his tail and playing with a ball. Kittens are $40, cats $25, and a 2nd friend is only $20. Would I go hang out here? No. But I used to do all my Target shopping here when I lived in Irvington. And ReTails is awesome! read more

This is a really depressing mall. The only real anchor stores are Target, Burlington, and Dicks. Over half of the stores are closed, and you can really feel the effects of the economic downturn here. read more
